Looking for a movie in which the "good guy" gets away with murder? Then Paparazzi is just for you -- a critically maligned, morally repugnant yet primitively satisfying thriller in which a rising action star (Cole Hauser) gets revenge on the tabloid photographers who stalk him every day, ruining his private life and nearly killing his wife (Robin Tunney) and young son. Coproduced by Mel Gibson (who makes a cameo appearance, along with Vince Vaughn, Chris Rock, and Matthew McConaughey), this is precisely the kind of pulp that Gibson starred in during the '80s and '90s, and you can bet he relished the premise, in which the most ruthless celebrity shutterbug (Tom Sizemore, at his most despicable) becomes the victim of his own corrupted ethics. Hauser's father, the great B-movie villain Wings Hauser, made a career out of crap like this, and his son brings a kind of foul integrity to his leading-man role while Dennis Farina channels Columbo as a detective on the prowl. As exploitative potboilers go, Paparazzi may be sick, but at least it's entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Helen Mirren reigns supreme in The Queen, a witty and ingenious look at a moment that rocked the house of Windsor: the week that followed the sudden death of Princess Diana in 1997. Diana's death came at just the same time that Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by the bright Michael Sheen) was settling into his new government--and trying to figure out the delicate relationship between 10 Downing Street and Queen Elizabeth II (Mirren). A large portion of the British population was trying to figure out the Windsors that week, as Elizabeth remained stiff-upper-lip and largely mum about the death of the beloved princess. In Peter Morgan's skillful script, we watch as Blair grows increasingly impatient with the Royals, who are sequestered in their Scottish estate while the public demands some show of grief. Prince Philip (James Cromwell, in good form) clumsily decides to take Diana's sons hunting, while a sympathetically-treated Prince Charles (Alex Jennings) displays some frustration with his mother's eerie calm.

None of this conveys how funny the film is, or how deftly it flows from one scene to the next. Director Stephen Frears (Dirty Pretty Things) deserves great credit for that, and for the performances, and for the movie's marvelous sense of well-roundedness; you could see this movie and groan at the cluelessness of the Royals and their outmoded existence, or you might just sympathize with showing reserve in a world that values gross public displays of emotion. But either way, you'll marvel at Mirren, who makes the Queen far more alert and human than one might ever have imagined. --Robert Horton

    Description

Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Actress, Dame Helen Mirren gives a spellbinding performance in THE QUEEN, the provocative story behind one of the most public tragedies of our time — the sudden death of Princess Diana. In the wake of Diana's death, the very private and tradition-bound Queen Elizabeth II (Mirren) finds herself in conflict with the new Prime Minister, the slickly modern and image-conscious Tony Blair. THE QUEEN, also starring Academy Award® Nominee James Cromwell (Best Supporting Actor, BABE, 1995), takes you inside the private chambers of the Royal Family and the British government for a captivating look at a vulnerable human being in her darkest hour, as a nation grieving for its People's Princess waits to see what its leaders will do. Suspenseful, heartfelt and riveting, it's a fascinating story you won't soon forget.

    5 out of 5 stars Must See.......2007-07-04

What can I say that hasn't been said about this wonderful film? I was surprised at how narrow it was in it's scope; no Fergie or Andrew, not much else but the immediate royal family and the Blairs. That's what makes it great--it's a glimpse into the tiny world that they live in every day. Even the princes were more "background" than characters. Loved the whole "hunting" metaphor and the emotional reaction of the Queen to the stag. Ironic. All performances are spectacular; I personally thought Blair's wife was hysterical. The real footage that was interdispersed throughout the film was wonderful and brought back so many memories. Sniff. You'll love this film.

    2 out of 5 stars Boring - not what I expected.......2007-07-03

Everyone seems to truly love this movie - I was bored to tears. Although it gave a nice overview of the events of the week of Diana's death and was very informative, I found the acting to be dreadfully boring and the direction was lacking. James Cromwell is one of my favorite actors and even his performance was abrupt and overall did not flow well. This movie could have been a million times better if it had a better director.

5 out of 5 stars The Royals Side of the Death of Diana Saga.......2007-07-03

I think the movie is fair and reasonably balanced. with the exception of Helen Mirren and James Cromwell the rest of the film is horribly mi-cast. I remember in 1997 during " that week " wondering how the British people could turn on the Queen given Diana's antics from 1993-1997. My heart really went out for her when she had to come back to Buckingham Palace and read the silly notes left on flowers by people. After all her years of service from the age of 15 fixing British army trucks during the blitz during WWII to the hard resconstruction years after the war, devoting herself 24 hrs a day to the British people , what was going through her mind as she faced those crowds that day and had to hear their applause for making her come down from Balmoral I can only guess. I think what Tony Blair says about Diana & the Queen in this film was awesome, How could The Queen lead the world in mourning of a woman who threw everything she offered to her back in her face and in recent years has spent 24/7 trying to destroy all those things she holds dear ?. I think Christopher Hitchens documentary "Princess Diana: The Mourning After", hit the nail on the head. One thing I did not like about this movie was the way the Queen Mother was portrayed. Every Royal book written about her portrays her as 100% opposite the way this movie showed her. The producers of The Queen need to read some WWII history.

5 out of 5 stars Great film, good performances, but not fully true to history.......2007-06-29

Love Helen Mirren, (and loved her as a younger Elizabeth I in the HBO 2-part series as well, look for it!)and all the cast is excellent as well. But after reading Tina Brown's Chronicles of Diana and YES I know its' a rehash of what we all "know" of those years and that particular soap opera, but the last chapters of the book after Diana's death, are fascinating in that they are the same time period shown in "the Queen". According to people who were there, servants, officials and the like, the emotional sense of how the family reacted toward the young princes, William and Harry, has none of the coldness and emotional "lets just get on with life" attitude implied in the film and in the review, top, which says "Prince Phillip clumsily tried to help by taking the boys hunting." (paraphrased). Well, these boys had spent their summer vacations riding and hunting at Balmoral all their lives, and this is what they thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't something their stuffy old grandfather forced them to do. The book describes the entire Royal family rallying around the boys---Princess Anne, Charles' sister, brought her 20 yr old son and 16 yr old daughter, to help entertain their cousins, and she herself made a project of taking the very emotionally fragile Harry under her wing, and taking him riding and hiking out in the Balmoral hills alone. Charles pulled out family albums and spent time going over the past good times the family had had. Prince Phillip their grandfather, in particular, was very protective, showed "gruff tenderness" and did make sure they hunted, rode and kept active, as opposed to brooding and staying glued to the maudlin TV coverage. Actually, for the benefit of the boys, the Queen ordered all TVs and radios removed in the castle. The outdoors life is one the family is used to and enjoys. Those who criticised the Royals for having the boys there in Balmoral instead of exposing them to the hysterical crowds in London...well, I don't know which would give them more nightmares in years to come but I can guess. Also, other little tidbits in the book of that week were once when Prince Phillip came on the intercom when the decisions about the State funeral were being made and broke in, shouting, "those boys have just lost their mother...they are not a commodity..." Brown, the author quotes her source as saying "you could hear the voice of a real grandfather." Later, it was Prince Phillip, not Charles who talked the princes into walking in the moving spectacle of the royal men behind the cortege. He told the sobbing William, "If I walk, will you walk with me?" And during the long walk to the Cathedral, spoke quietly to the two boys of the famous sights they were passing, speaking softly the whole way there. All these vignettes, which would have made all the Royal more human, were left out of the film, good as it was, there was an agenda, that doesn't have to be spelled out. The Queen could admire a royal appearing stag, later shown beheaded...but her love and her husband's love for the grandsons was never shown, nor was the love of the whole family for the boys or for each other, despite all Diana had done to blacken the reputation of that family in the press. Not that they're perfect, just human.

    4 out of 5 stars good flick--wonder if it's true.......2007-06-29

Helen Mirren walks like the queen, talks like the queen, and ultimately quacks like her as well. Good performances.

2 out of 5 stars Cole Hauser, Cardboard, Can't Act.......2007-02-06

This movie is beyond bad. It could have been a little better but the script and direction and, oh yes, the star Cole Hauser are pretty poor. There are a few good action sequences and a few unintentional laughs (hence 2 stars) but that's it! Bottom line: Cole Hauser just can't act.

      5 out of 5 stars 5 star performance.......2007-01-28

Coming from Director Mel Gibson, who knows a thing or two about the Paparazzi, this is an entrawling thriller.. which while taking you into the seedier side of the 'Celeb headlines' also demonstrates the pressures celebrities have to endure.

In this story, the central character has his daughter killed in a car crash he blames on a particular carnviorous group of pap.. and decides to exact his revenge..

Its a tense thriller, that takes you into the insanity the movie star suffers as he vents his frustrations in a lethal way..

i love this movie. its scared me much but not too scary for the kids, haha!! bo laramy is a great acter.

      4 out of 5 stars A true story.......2006-07-10

Okay, not a true story but with all the news about poor Lindsay Lohan being harassed by the paparazzi and the Simpson girls being chased and stalked and all the pictures of cheating celebrities and newborn babies popping up everywhere a movie like `Paparazzi' was just bound to happen sooner or later, I mean if anything screams `ripped from the headlines' it's a film like this, right. This movie does, in a weird way, tackle that subject properly...at first. It shows us the disturbing way the paparazzi stop at nothing to get their next paycheck. The fact that celebrities really have to understand this kind of crap comes with the turf is skirted around in pursuit to make them appear to be heroes who put up with hardship everyday. It attempts to paint them as the same as us. Sure they have more money, nicer houses, beautiful wives and perfect lives but they have to deal with people in their business 24/7 and we don't. No one cares about us so we're lucky. We are lucky, lucky that we don't have to deal with Tom Sizemore and Daniel Baldwin busting our car almost killing our wife and child just to get our picture. That's exactly what they do too, putting our hero's son in a coma and causing his darling wife to slip into depression. That and the fact that they don't stop but continue to harass and ruin the life of this man make it impossible not to react...right? The film does a good job, maybe an overly good job; of making the paparazzi look like complete and utter jerks, like evil heartless men, when I'm sure they aren't all that way. I mean they are doing their jobs but that's not the point so forget I said that. The movie starts to fall apart after the fateful car wreck and Bo starts to take matters into his own hands. It's very improbable but it's also the macho thing to do and probably what anyone in his situation would be `wanting' to do. I will say that Tom Sizemore is really annoying here, overacting tremendously, and I normally really like him. Cole Hauser, Bo the action star, does a better job with his role but it's Robin Tunney who plays Cole's wife that really does the best, carrying the movie on her shoulders with her concern and dread all wrapped up in her delicate face. You just want to weep for her. The story is exciting and engrossing even though it's quite unbelievable...it's still a fun film to watch despite a few flaws throughout.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Premise Based on Celebrities' Secret Fantasy, But Still Needs More Thrills and Actions.......2006-04-16

`Paparazzi,' produced by 20th Century Fox and Mel Gibson's Icon Productions, looks exactly like any celebrity's secret fantasy. But making someone's secret fantasy into a film is not a bad thing at all. What I disliked about `Paparazzi' is not the lack of wit or insight into the `jobs' of paparazzi - oh, that's so easy to guess - but the lack of storytelling skill, or its payoff as entertainment. In other words, the story about the rising Hollywood star Bo Laramie who is badly treated by the paparazzi and his secret payback plans is neither thrilling nor intense as revenge fantasy.

Yes, I understand. Some paparazzi (if not all) deserve to suffer such a bitter fate as those persistent cameramen who stalk and harass the new Hollywood action star Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser) and his family. I know some cameramen really do annoying things, and provoke celebrities on purpose in the same way as the mean and sleazy `journalist' Rex Harper (Tom Sizemore) does to Bo and his son. And suppose his beloved son and wife are hospitalized because of those paparazzi, what should he do?

[CLUMSY PACE AND UNDERWHELMING PAYOFFS] `Paparazzi' is a revenge fantasy that is part based on the reality in Hollywood, and the tragic death of Princess Diana. You just cannot discuss this kind of exploitation film from a moral perspective because these films are purely entertainment in which we see the good guys rewarded and bad guys punished. And I like these films from the days of Charles `Death Wish' Bronson.

`Paparazzi,' however, does not let us wallow in this guilty pleasure fantasy enough. In other words, the actions (or Bo's revenge) are not thrilling enough and neither are the payoffs. Trashy or not, any revenge story must have good amount of thrills in it in order to really taste sweet. But the taste of `Paparazzi' is only mild at best. It does not give us enough taste of honey because several ruses Bo uses to trap these paparazzi are too far-fetched and even tame, and those paparazzi are also too easy a target for him.

Bo oversteps the mark because they overstepped it. This questionable formula works only when it does not give enough time for us to think. In spite of its short running time (that barely exceeds 80 minutes), however, `Paparazzi' kills its potentially interesting story by its slow and clumsy pace, heavy-handed direction that does not know the right way to tell an intriguing story, and disappointing acting from Hauser and Sizemore.

The only thing I find interesting is the cameos from Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, Chris Rock, and Matthew McConaughey. Otherwise, `Paparazzi' lacks power and action that those revenge fantasy should have.

The great Pedro Infante takes a back seat to Carmen Sevilla in this "film within a film," as the plot revolves around a producer who contracts a Spanish movie star to make a film in Mexico, and as her "love interest," hires an unknown charro singer who is performing in the "Aqui es Jalisco" cantina. Their initial meeting is a disaster, and goes from bad to worse, as in their pride and many insecurities they deny their love for each other. Directed by Rafael Baledon, "Gitana Tenias Que Ser" has 9 songs, most of them sung solo or in part by Sevilla, who was a mega-star in the 50's in her native Spain, and also well known internationally. Her beauty, graceful dancing and lovely voice show why she achieved so much success at such an early age (she was 23 at the time of this film).

There are many scenes with marvelous flamenco singing and dancing, as well as some mariachi numbers, in this blend of cultures and musical styles. There are some notable duets between Infante and Sevilla: "Cielito Lindo," "Piel Canela," and "Guadalajara," and among Infante's solos are "Que Me Toquen Las Golondrinas." "Gitana Tenias Que Ser" alternates between broad slapstick comedy and romantic melodrama, and just squeaks into the 5 star category because of its 2 superb leads, and a solid supporting cast, which includes Estrellita Castro as Tia Paquita.

Pedro Infante (1917-1957), was Mexico's most loved singer/actor, and 50 years after his untimely passing when he crashed his plane in the Yucatan, he reigns supreme, and his many films and recordings are national treasures.

5 out of 5 stars STELLA STREET, not Della Street..........2006-03-08

John Sessions' STELLA STREET is one of the funniest films I've seen, and I've watched it several times; it's good for bad days. Master impersonator Sessions manages to play a multitude of parts in this gem, perfect for the ageing boomer or anyone who wants to imagine the domestic side of life for our celebs and rock-and-rollers. Imagine if Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and other greats moved into YOUR neighborhood! There's also the pyro-next-door, the housekeeper, Mick and Keith's little deli;Mick's parents, somehow done in faux vintage footage, are a scream. There's so much good material here, it's hard to keep up with all the puns and laughs. The British accents are sometimes a challenge - my strategy is to turn the volume way up; it seems to help. The film is a good copy. I was fortunate enough to first see this on the big screen in my hometown Cleveland Cinematheque (long may it live). I highly reccommend STELLA STREET.

              3 out of 5 stars Diana's death - truth or fiction.......2006-12-22

I saw this originally on tv and wasn't sure why Dodie's dad really believed that the Royals were out to kill Diana. I added this to my collection only to have a record of what people were thinking at the time of her death. It's an ok piece to have but there are more documentaries out there that cover it better.
