As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, this movie is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 WarGames. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous clichés. ("By the time they realize the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic Backbeat, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness. It doesn't hurt that the two stars, Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy Williamson in Trainspotting) and Angelina Jolie (Gia), are just about equally gorgeous and charismatic; their longing glances steam up the screen. --David Chute

Oh! Do I have your attention now!?? Buy this and watch three of the most talented actresses alive and two of the most beautiful (sorry Huffman, but you do frumpy like no ones business). A good look at Jolie tosee her roots. and a puzzle movie where allt he piece's fit!

This movie is very underrated. For how much great acting as well as the great story line this movie needs to be appreciated more as those two fat guys, ebert and roper (however you spell his name), say. "I give this movie 2 thumbs way, way up." On top of all this I think Penn Jillete, although a small part was AWESOME. Thank you and I take my leave.

This movie has always been a fav. of mine! Angelina Jolie never looks(ed) better then she does in this movie!! I love the special effects!! I bought this along with Hackers 2 (Track Down), and Hackers 3 (Antitrust) All a Must have for any geek!!

This movie is a good fun time, with interesting characters and an intriguing story line. Although the technology is somewhat outdated it is easy to suspend belief and to become involved in the story. For me, Matthew Lillard was a standout character and his performance really made the movie for me.

If you like Johnny Miller then you have to have Hackers. It is a great movie with good acting and lots of funny moments.

This half-hour program features conversations with: Steve Wozniak, designer of the Apple II; Andy Hertzfeld and Bill Atkinson, designers of the Macintosh; Homebrew Computer Club leader Lee Felsenstein; MIT hackers Richard Stallman and Richard Greenblatt; and many more.

Hackers was produced over a decade before the advent of the Internet. All interviews were shot over a long week-end in 1984, at the first Hackers Conference, hosted by Whole Earth Catalog editors Stewart Brand and Kevin Kelley, in Sausalito, California. This event was inspired by Steven Levy's classic book Hackers - Heroes of the Computer Revolution.

Mildly interesting video. I had expected a bit more, but this is 30 minutes of a couple of people talking about how cool computers were - in 1980. Nice to see a very young Richard Stallman, and other notorious hackers (Steve Wozniak, Andy Hertzfeld), but all in all a low value video...

Being a geek history buff I really enjoyed this DVD.

If you've read Robert X. Cringely's "Accidental Empires", or watched his "Triumph of the Nerds" or "Nerds 2.0.1" videos, or read any of the other good geek history books like "Fire in the Valley" or "Silicon Boys", you will probably enjoy this video.

It's not a comprehensive history (it's only 26 minutes), but offers some cool interviews and other stuff from the pioneers of the modern "PC" era.

You can also watch one of my heroes, Steve Wozniak (Apple co-founder), state how (at the time, in 1985) there were "too many" computer people creating too much software and other stuff, and how the market didn't need that much stuff. These days the number of geeks and computer products has increased exponentially though.. This is his equivalent of the Bill Gates "640k" statement around that same time I think. =)

It's a good video, I only wish it was longer.

I like the viideo, hearing woz and the old school hackers, what did they think, how did they live their lifes, but I think it could be better if you put some mmm... I don't know... subtitles? and some pics or something about making the movie, or maybe actual interviews with the people of this video, cuase, it's a little long... (26 Mins.) I know this could be better, but it's up to you guys....

Talk about a walk down Memory Lane! This is absolutely priceless footage of the ORIGINAL hackers in all their glorious youth talking about sneaking into the Stanford mainframe computer after hours in order to "hack," staying up all night trying to make code work, Wozniak talking about the first Apple, or talking about "someday you'll be able to send messages," and all of them playing with the brand new Macintosh. This is like looking at an old photo album and sighing over the good old days. I'm sorry the previous reviewer didn't take the time to actually view the tape. It's well worth seeing and savoring.

chances are, if you own a psp and use it for more than just games (i.e.-mp3s, movies, pictures, rss feeds) then you would definitely love this movie. the main character dade is a person we could all relate to on some level, and of course angelina jolie is just hot, from her personality, to her unique style. this movie is a pretty safe gift for anybody that has a psp, i would consider it a must-own myself.

If anyone is new to this movie, expect a fun, light fare, not to deep, but plenty of flash and style. People criticize "Hackers" for being technically inacurate, but honestly, its irrelevant here - you'll enjoy the crazy ride. As a side note: the soundtrack is amazing and should have permanent residence on your Memory Stick.

As for the UMD conversion, I haven't really noticed any edits/changes from my 1998 dvd release, though this disk is devoid of any extras (unless you count other language tracks and subtitles). Visually, this version suffers from the downsampling a bit - fast motions (arms swinging, fast camera angles, car chases) are blurred/discolored somewhat, though not enough to be annoying. If you want clarity, buy a real DVD.

Pick up this UMD if you're looking for a good timewaster - you won't regret it.

(PS - Someone needs to release a 10th anniversary edition of this movie - too much was cut out)

This Documentary explains that while the internet is an amazing technology, it was not built to keep people out but to just share information making it vulnerable to hackers, terrorists and thieves. This film is a great wake up call to everyone in the tech industry and for the general public.

    Oh! Do I have your attention now!?? Buy this and watch three of the most talented actresses alive and two of the most beautiful (sorry Huffman, but you do frumpy like no ones business). A good look at Jolie tosee her roots. and a puzzle movie where allt he piece's fit!

    This movie is very underrated. For how much great acting as well as the great story line this movie needs to be appreciated more as those two fat guys, ebert and roper (however you spell his name), say. "I give this movie 2 thumbs way, way up." On top of all this I think Penn Jillete, although a small part was AWESOME. Thank you and I take my leave.

    This movie has always been a fav. of mine! Angelina Jolie never looks(ed) better then she does in this movie!! I love the special effects!! I bought this along with Hackers 2 (Track Down), and Hackers 3 (Antitrust) All a Must have for any geek!!

    This movie is a good fun time, with interesting characters and an intriguing story line. Although the technology is somewhat outdated it is easy to suspend belief and to become involved in the story. For me, Matthew Lillard was a standout character and his performance really made the movie for me.

    If you like Johnny Miller then you have to have Hackers. It is a great movie with good acting and lots of funny moments.

        As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, this movie is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 WarGames. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous clichés. ("By the time they realize the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic Backbeat, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness.
