Some pundits called it a flawed, exploitative action film that glamorized drug dealing and the luxury of a lucrative criminal lifestyle, spawning a trend of films that attracted youth gangs and provoked violence in theaters. Others hailed it as a breakthrough movie that depicted drug dealers as ruthless, corrupt, and evil, leading dead-end lives that no rational youth would want to emulate. However you interpret it, New Jack City is still one of the first and best films of the 1990s to crack open the underworld of cocaine and peer inside with its eyes wide open. It's also the film that established Wesley Snipes as an actor to watch, with enough charisma to bring an insidious quality of seduction to his role as coke-lord Nino Brown, and enough intelligence to portray a character deluded by his own sense of indestructible power. Director Mario Van Peebles stretched his otherwise-limited talent to bring vivid authenticity and urgency to this crime story, and subplots involving a pair of tenacious cops (Ice-T, Judd Nelson) and a recovering coke addict (Chris Rock) provide additional dramatic tension. Although some critics may hesitate to admit it, New Jack City deserves mention in any serious discussion about African American filmmakers and influential films. --Jeff Shannon

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen play good girl/bad girl sisters who suddenly find themselves on a high-speed chase escaping crooks, attracting hunks, and wreaking havoc in this lightweight comedy set in the Big Apple. Ashley plays high school scholar Jane Ryan, an overachiever with her sights set on winning a college scholarship competition. Mary-Kate plays her sister, Roxy, a rebellious teen truant who would rather be a rock star than a student. Since their mother's death, the sisters' relationship has been strained. Now their worlds collide when a day in Manhattan forces Jane and Roxy to join forces, overcoming their differences to battle an international smuggling ring while trying to make it in time for Jane's competition. While the script is predictably bland, viewers will enjoy the comedic strengths of Eugene Levy (Serendipity, American Pie) as Roxy's ubiquitous truant officer. Though the twins manage some decent slapstick, their sensuality, sexual innuendo, and suggestive disrobing is disappointing. DVD bonus features include some hilarious bloopers and alternate endings. (Ages 10 and older) --Lynn Gibson

great movie.......2006-07-16
After Jane (Ashley) and Roxy's (Mary-Kate) mother dies, they drift apart. Jane is a perfectionist focusing on her future and Roxy is a drummer in a band and could care less about school.
On the same day, they both need to go to NYC: Jane to make a very important speech for college and Roxy to attend a Simple Plan video shoot and give her CD to people who could make them famous.
Everything goes wrong: They get kicked off their train, they get a limo ride from a Chinese man who boot-legs movies and cds and is after them, they sneak into the senator's hotel room to get cleaned up and have to leave fast while they're in towels and bath-robes, a truancy officer is after Roxy, and of course: 2 cute boys they keep "bumping" into and begin dating at the end.
This movie is a crazy, fun, and enteraining film! Fun for the entire family to watch!
best.......2006-06-12
me natalie again loved the movie all you haters can screw off I liked this movie.
Mary-Kate and Ashley fail. Again........2006-06-03
Think of everything that you would despise in a movie. Throw that all in to one, and you get New York Minute. In addition to an excruciatingly terrible plot line, 3rd grade acting, and horrific accents, you also get incessantly annoying 'actors' ripping an hour and a half of your life. An hour and a half that you can never get back, and that may end in some need for cleansing as a human being and the reassurance that, by the way, the world isn't completely full of morons.
Admittedly, I approached the film warily, and I didn't expect much, but I was hoping for a slightly enjoyable film at least, for I am easily pleased. But I was not even granted that relief, and so I sat through the film...hoping against hope that maybe, just maybe there would be a redeeming factor near the end.
There wasn't.
I could not help myself from enjoying this movie - a total surprise.......2006-05-21
Something must have appealed to me about NEW YORK MINUTE for me to add it to my TiVo list. As someone who managed to miss all of the previous efforts by the twins it wasn't an attempt to capture any nostaligic feeling. It wasn't also based on anything related to the story - teens get mixed up in series of mishaps in big city has been done many times before, such as Elizabeth Shue's ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING. You know what I think it was, most possibly a clip of two totally hot looking blonde actresses (let's face it they are) and the chemistry and comic timing they seem to have together.
No, high-class art NEW YORK MINUTE is not. It's not the funniest movie out either. But what is lacks in what some perceive as it flaws it makes up for with good natured fun. Yes, this is a fun movie. It's fun to see the two go from one misadventure to another initially with a mutual contempt that becomes a realization on the importance of family and family ties.
The movie features Jane Ryan (Ashley Olsen), a straight-A uptight Long island high school student who organizes her entire life around her day planner. She's driven and ambitious and determined to win a scholarship to go study at Oxford in England. She has her speech/pitch ready to be delivered in New York and seems as preapred as anyone could be. But fate has a cruel twist in store for her. Enter her sister Roxy (played by Mary-Kate Olsen), she's about as different from Jane as possible. Roxy is with a rock-band and acts with spontaneity that Jane would find scary. She also has made a habit of playing truant, something that has brought her to the attantion of Nassau Co. truancy officer Max Lomax (played by comic genius Eugene Levy.)
Roxy is tasked with getting her sister to the train station, but she has her own plans for the big city, determined to deliver some demo tapes to record producers on hand for the videotaping of a new rock video. So, the two head for the big city with the bumbling Lomax in hot pursuit. Through some crazy machinations they become entangled up with some music and video pirates (including the hilarious Andy Richter as a goon who thinks he is Chinese) and the son of a U.S. Senator (and her dog) and are soon running through the streets of New York City in little more than bath towels.
I've read a lot of reviewers on her dissing the acting of Ashley and Mary-Kate. Well, it's true that they are not going to be winning any Oscars for their roles here, but they deliver their performances with an infectious enthusiasm that had be lapping up every minute of the movie. I enjoyed it, I simply could not help myself.
This movie comes recommended, and I really didn't think it would be. I surprised myself by enjoying every zany moment of it. And those girls are too cute!
New York Minute.......2006-04-09
Mary-Kate and Ashley are two of the richest teenagers in the world. New York Minute shows the different personalities they can both act out. It has a series of unfortunate events which causes them to turn on each other, but they soon have to realise that they need each other to make things right. As Mary-Kate plays rebel and truant Roxy it's great to see her twin Ashley play the opposite- a germaphobic brainbox with a goal to get in to Oxford University. I totally recommend this dvd for anyone. It even has a little romance for the girls. So what are you waiting for? Get it! lol
Yours Sincerely Sophie Chandler xxx

A true cinema classic.......2007-06-22
When I first saw this movie, I can honestly say that it delivered on all aspects of the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. Mario Van Peebles did a wonderful job, and Wesley Snipes was outstanding. Ice T, phenomenal. Two other great actors in this film would have to be Christopher Williams, and Vanessa Williams. I personally recommend this film to all.
Excellent Inner City Crime Flick.......2005-12-21
This motion picture is about the crack cocaine epidemic and the devastating impact that it had on life in the inner city. This is a tough and uncompromising movie.
The main character in New Jack City is Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes), the leader of the Cash Money Brothers (CMB) gang that is one of the biggest crack cocaine trafficking outfits in New York City (NYC). Together with his partner Gee Money (Allen Payne), Brown lives a glamorous life of luxury, fast cars and hot chicks. To put it mildly, Brown is a poor role model for inner city youth.
As Brown's CMB empire grows, he becomes ever more arrogant. The CMB takes over an apartment building and evicts the inhabitants, including an elderly World War II veteran. The CMB is becoming big, fat and out of control. The CMB is hell bent on contaminating the NYC inner city scene. Brown even dreams of taking down the Mafia so that the CMB can become the dominant organized crime gang in NYC. Brown initiates action against the Mafia and scores some success. The shootouts between the CMB and the Mafia are very well done.
Eventually, the top brass at the New York Police Department (NYPD) wake up to the CMB menace and resolve to do something about it. Two of its best detectives, Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Nick Peretti (Judd Nelson) are assigned to the case. The detecting duo get a big break when they come in contact with a druggie named Pookie (Chris Rock). The detectives put Pookie on the road to recovery and Pookie agrees to infiltrate the CMB for the NYPD.
New Jack City is a most interesting movie. On the surface, it is just another cops and drug dealers movie, but it is really more than that. It is a tough, realistic portrayal of the damage wrought to the inner city by the crack cocaine epidemic. It presents an involving story with a strong anti-drug message. This movie really makes clear just how bad the drug problem is in the inner city and how illegal drugs have ravaged the community.
New Jack City is a well executed movie. It features strong performances by such actors as Ice-T and Wesley Snipes, who have generally not made strong performances on other movies. It has a strong script and an involving plot. It probably should have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, yet it was not even nominated for an Oscar in any category. This was because, for all its great points, New Jack City was generally regarded by both the critics and the Hollywood elite as a "black" movie and as such unworthy of being considered as legitimate cinema irregardless of how much money it earned for its releasing studio.
This movie was both entertaining and educational in that it taught this country's youth the dangers of drugs and how it
leads to a person's downfall. The message of this film was plain and simple: Crack cocaine can destroy a person's life and damage the lives of others. If we do not continue to fight the war on drugs, then drugs will continue to destroy our country.
We will own this f****n city!.......2005-12-20
No disrespect to those who say this movie is unrealistic but.....it was supposed to take place in a time when crack had first blown up. People were wearing big ass gold chains and all the dealers with this "new" product were blowing up. maybe not a rapidly as shown but, be for real, how much can you show in a 2 hour movie? A rip off of scarface? come on.....80% of the movies made had taken some aspect of another movie and tried to expand on it. New Jack did a pretty good job at that. Solid cast, good action, and brutality that really wasn't shown too much in movies back then. And don't even front.......Half of you who gunned down this movie probably went out and bought that same blue suit that Nino was rockin. And leave Ice T alone. True, he's not the best actor, but this was his breakthrough role and the man did okay. And as for the reviewer who made the statement about "cop killer now playing a cop", boy please.......I could only imagine what you would do on film if the money was right. But this all is just my opinion. See the flick and form your own. 4 stars.
Bad Ass...Nuff Said..........2005-10-20
Gotta love this one, enough Violence, Drugs, & "F" bombs to saticfy almost anyone! No, seriously, it really is a good movie. But i'm not gonna ramble on for 50 paragraphs like some [...] on why you should rent this. Just do it, and if not...it's your loss! now f*** off!

NEW JACK CITY.......2007-05-13
The DVD's were shipped promptly, was packaged very well, watched the movie the same night I received it. No complaints here.
seen it all before..........2007-04-30
Very little that's original here. I just don't see it as being some kind of classic.
There is a scene at the beginning where the main lead and his cohorts decide to put all the crack activity in one building: the making, the selling, etc. and one of the honcho's people says: "That's ingenius."
Huh? What's ingenius about it? If the cops assaulted the place you'd lose everything, the whole shebang, all at once. Why make it easier for the authorities? I doubt that drug lords are that dumb in real life. Certainly, some are--the proof is there, but someone as the character portrayed by Wesley Snipes? I doubt it.. I mean the film lost me right there, not to mention the fact that we have seen so many of the scenes in other films that came before it.
The flick just didn't grab me. Also, Judd Nelson, usually very good, seemed lost in the shuffle here--due to lack of focus by the director.
Not to mention: it's truly annoying when filmmakers go around praising their film and telling you how GREAT they think it is.
You know what? That's for the audiance to decide. A little modesty goes a long way. This director doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word.
If you've seen the 1932 Scarface, the 1983 Scarface, and remember the 90's well then you have a good grip on the film.......2007-02-08
I've only seen this movie quite recently after hearing about it for years and being told that it's a must see. While actually viewing the movie my opinions were mixed but afterwards everything slid into focus. On the technical side of the movie the directing and editing were nothing new or original, Mario Van Peebles played everything straight out of a textbook and the pacing didn't create any great flow. Most of the acting was far from award winning but not so bad as to distract from the movie itself, for any real length of time at least. Everything about the quality and look of the film screams early 90's, but in an endearing manner. As far as the films influences go, the 1983 version of "Scarface" is the most acknowledged and the one film that this movie will probably be compared to for the rest of its rememberance. However I began to notice something very quickly at the heart of the movie and with the blurb about drugs and drug dealers in America at the end, it became clear that the 1932 "Scarface: Shame of the Nation" had just as large of a part in the shaping of this movie, it serves basically as a PSA to America. This also may account for why everything technically seemed very plain and stereotypical (mind you with very high production value). Take these two movies, throw in a dash of "Cops", a very pop show at the time, add in a lot of the earliest mainstream MC's and you have New Jack City. A movie that still holds appeal after more than 15 years and an eclectic piece of 90's cinema that makes a decent viewing.
Mario Van Peebles found a great criminal in Wesley Snipes!.......2007-01-25
"Drugs ain't a black thing, or a white thing. It's a death thing. Death don't give a s*** about color."-Nick Perrti
I first saw this in 1993 and was totally blown away by the directing, cinematography, script and acting and so I was really looking forward to seeing it again after an absence of almost thirteen years. But after seeing this a second time, I could scarcely believe I was watching a film I had remembered very well. In 1994 I would have given this film 5 out of 5 but instead I've given it a 4 due to its frail ending.
New Jack City (1991) is an interesting movie that aims to please. This film marks the first time Mario Van Peebles directed a theatrical released film (that his father helped co-write) and he co-stars in the film as well. The movie follows a small time hood Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) who builds up a vast criminal empire by flooding the streets with crack cocaine. Ice-T and Judd Nelson co-stars as well as two unorthodox cops who want to lock up Nino Brown. Allen Payne (Gee Money) and Mario van Peebles himself (Stone) has also giving some approved performances in here.
The acting is not the strongest part of this film but to me, three men made this film worthy of attention which is Wesley, Ice-T, and Rock. Chris Rock is unforgettable in this movie and he shines in his role as the "crack-head" Pookie. He has so many one-liners that are hysterical funny. The real winner is truly Wesley Snipes, who plays a role we don't usually identify with him, and does so with considerable spirit. He is utterly believable; the scene where he describes first killing someone while high on drugs scared the crap out of me - this is not someone I want as a friend! - Which happens to be a central theme of this film.
There are flaws in it to be sure, primarily of continuity - there are moments for which we are unprepared, and loose ends that don't get tied. The "Cash Money" drug cartel never gets its act together as a criminal organization - which may be the point, but in which case this needs greater exploration on the street level - without soldiers, you have no army, a lesson the Mafia could still teach the younger gangs. But taken all-in-all, "New Jack City" is a tough crime thriller, well-presented, with a great cast at their strongest. Despite it flaws, it holds a lot of strong and impressive moments which makes this worth a watch.
Black Scarface.......2006-11-17
One movie that I will probably remember from the 1990s the best is "New Jack City." It tells the story of how Nino Brown (played by Wesely Snipes) and his crew, CMB (Cash Money Brothers) rose to power as crack kingpins by running their operation out of a apartment complex that they take over. I was 2 when I first saw this movie, so I thought that New Jack City was a real place. When I got older I realized that it was New York City when I saw the Statue of Liberty in the opening sequence. People can argue that is movie is another Scarface for many reasons:
1. The dude starts to sell drugs after his homeboy puts him up on game
2. He blows up and becomes sucessful
3. Everything starts to go downhill
4. He kills his best friend
5. He himself gets killed
Those are some of the ways that New Jack City compares but this is how they contrast:
1. Nino is black while Tony is Cuban
2. It shows the devestation that crack did to people who used it and the communities while Scarface just shows the glitz and glamor of Miami
3. It shows the cops struggle to get crack off the streets. While Scarface barely shows Tony making any coke deals at all.
4. It deals with betrayal.
The music also makes the movie good too. It contains songs from co-stars Ice T and Chris Williams. A hip-hop classic in every since of the word

Customer Reviews:
Very Enjoyable!.......2003-10-15
A neat documentary about life among the bohemian types of New York City in the 1950s and very early 60s. Lots of fantastic archival footage and recently-filmed reminiscences of some of those concerned. My only complaint is that it mainly concerns itself with the writers of this period. It would have been great had the program run an additional 45 minutes (on top of the 75 minute running time we have here) and included more about the jazz, art and theatre scene that is merely glossed over. Very enjoyable but a little unbalanced. The dvd includes an "interview" with director Betsy Blackenbaker which is actually a half hour girlie chat from MetroTV's "Unblinking Eye" program. In it the director laments the times gone by and also not having enough money to have done a more comprehensive overview of the New York scene. She ends up, somewhat surprisingly, agonizing over the burning question:"What can we do to create something like this again?" ABOLISHING POLITICAL CORRECTNESS would be a positive start but (sigh) that was another place, another time, another world. It wont happen again, Betsy... It can't! The disc has really cool coverart.

Customer Reviews:
4 stars.
