First screened on BBC in 2001, The Way We Live Now will surprise those who know Anthony Trollope through the subtleties of his Barsetshire novels. This story of ambition centers around Augustus Melmotte, an Austrian Jewish financier who takes the London money markets and social scene by storm in his efforts to become an "English country gentleman." His rise and fall is followed with remorseless logic by Trollope, and David Yates's direction keeps this in focus against a wealth of subplots and character interaction.

The cast is a strong one, with David Suchet's Melmotte gripping in his recklessness, climaxing in the theatrical magnificence of his departure in disgrace from the House of Commons. Shirley Henderson is magnetic as his put-upon daughter Marie, courted by the cream-of-society bachelors for her dowry rather than her person. Cheryl Campbell gives a good account of the feckless Lady Carbury, writing vacuous novels to support her family, with Matthew MacFadyen relishing the part of her rakish son, Felix. Paloma Baeza is sympathetic as her daughter, Hetta, whose on-off relationship with entrepreneur Paul Montague, ably taken by Cillian Murphy, provides the main love interest. Douglas Hodge impresses as the loyal and sincere but insipid Roger Carbury.

The series consists of four generous episodes, each lasting 75 minutes. This is an absorbing production of what isn't the most subtle of Victorian novels, but which surely remains among the most relevant. --Richard Whitehouse

Based on the novel by Anthony Trollope, this satire of Victorian society contains all the dynamic elements that made him one of the most celebrated and popular novelists of his day--the trials and tribulations of young love, the pettiness of the upper class life, the raw energy and excitement of the most powerful city the world had ever seen, and the greed and corruption that lay just below its glittering surface.

Episode 1: When infamous financier Augustus Melmotte (David Suchet) mysteriously appears in London, the city's impoverished aristocrats greedily court his favor. Felix Carbury, a charming but lazy young baronet, is one of the many gentlemen swarming around Melmotte's rich heiress daughter, Marie. Meanwhile, Felix's independently minded sister, Hetta, falls in love with a bright young engineer, Paul Montague, who is in town to approach Melmotte with an ambitious business propostion. Complications soon arise in business and love.

Episode 2: While Paul Montague throws himself into the booming railway business with Melmotte, the presence of his mysterious American friend in London threatens to jeopardize his chances with Hetta. Felix is forced to desperate measures to secure his future with Marie when he learns that her father is planning her marriage to a rival suitor.

Episode 3: Paul visits Mexico to have his worst fears about the railway construction confirmed. Returning to London he decides to confront Melmotte and resolve his romantic situation. Melmotte involves himself in increasingly ambitious business schemes while Felix gets himself into further trouble and Hetta recieves some devastating news.

Episode 4: Melmotte reaches the highest echelons of London society but the wolves are beginning to gather at his door. Paul takes his chance to act and Felix comes face to face with some tough opposition, while Hetta contemplates settling for second best. Climaxing in love lost, love gained, a death and some just desserts.

Good not great........2007-03-17

I love British period films. And am a huge fan of Matthew Macfadyen. But this film did not satisfy the hype. Every bit of detail was paid -- unfortunately making the entire film drag and leaving me wanting something... Although the story is strong, the cinematography beautiful and much of the dialogue clever, some weaknesses were hard to overcome. For example: Paul Montague's ex-fiance from America... Her southern accent is ridiculous and making her an utterly unbelievable character. Augustus Melmotte, although he reminded me of the Danny Devito's Penguine from Batman, was effectively dark and menacing. But because he is in much of the scenes, his character became strangely redundant, predictable. However, the rest of the cast was excellent. Matthew Macfadyen, as Sir Felix, was hilarious and charming as a cad. As good as this movie was, it could have been so much better had the director been more liberal with the editing... as is, it is extremely long and somewhat repetitive. But fans of period films will be forgiving and enjoy it nonetheless.

A period piece delight.......2007-01-01

Set in England in the late 1800's, this delightful series intertwines the lives of the Carbury family and the Melmonts. Mrs. Carbury is on the brink of ruin because her deceased husband did not leave her enough to thrive and her only hope is for her scoundrel of a son to marry a wealthy woman or alternatively for her beautiful daughter to marry her cousin. The Melmont's have just arrived in London from Vienna and purportedly have wealth. The Melmont daughter is attracted to the worthless Carbury son and the story begins to spin its web. The acting in this series is exceptional and the screenplay is tightly woven so that each episode ends on a cliff hanger. It is an enjoyable dvd for light hearted entertainment.

The Way We Live Now is a feast for those loving a good story beautifully acted and filmed in BBC Color!.......2006-09-11

How We Live Now is the 1870s novel written by Anthony Trollope (1815-1882, While Trollope is best known for his Barchester series dealing with the clergy and the Palliser series focusing on Victorian political life this novel of business and family life is considered one of his best novels (and he wrote 47!)
Mr. Melmotte is a European schemer who fleeces several prominent men to invest in a bogus railroad company. David Suchet stars in this role (best known for his Hercule Poirot
portrayal), The stout and middle aged Suchet plays Melmotte with genius and his presence is strong and memorable.
Shirley Henderson playing his abused and lovelorn daugher Marie is very well acted. Her love affair with the cad Felix
Carbury is drawn with superb depth in fine acting.
The love affair between Hettie Carbury and the engineer Paul
Montague (who has an American girfriend Winifred Hurtle who shows up to fight for her man) is very interesting as the triangle love affair is worked out during the course of the 6 hour Masterpiece miniseries.
The BBC production is sumptuous! Beautiful period costumes
and music add to the sheer enjoyment of this series!
Americans are sometimes bored because British programming
moves at a sloweer pace than many of our tv programs. They forget that these novels fulfilled the function of a soap opera as their stories were issued in monthly parts. Trollope is not as well known as George Eliot or the inimitable Dickens but any
of his novels portrayed on the screen is well worth the time to
view it.

fine film!

Matthew Macfadyen and David Suchet are great in this series! They are over-the-top in a wonderful, engrossing way. Definitely NOT a boring, period piece.

I greatly enjoyed watching this on Masterpiece Theatre and I knew that when it came out on DVD, I would have to purchase it. It is a fantastic adaptation of Trollope's tale of the world in the 1870's where greed and corruption as well as nonsense was rampant. It was a delightful comedy that any adult, no matter the age can enjoy.

The original Get Carter (1971), directed by Croupier's Mike Hodges, stars Michael Caine as Jack Carter, a mob enforcer who returns to his hometown after the suspicious death of his brother. The plot has a breezy, improvised feel and Caine is fantastic, an amoral man who would sleep with any girl or torture any guy to get what he wants. In the American remake, Sylvester Stallone plays a sanitized version of Jack Carter, a guy who is violent but ultimately moral. It doesn't work nearly as well. The whole movie seems like it's been crafted around the Stallone persona, which gives it a manufactured rather than spontaneous feel. Admittedly, that is not helped by the film-school pyrotechnics of director Stephen Kay, who fills the frame with so much unnecessary camera movement that it really feels like he spent more time setting up the camera shots than he did on the script. Moving the story from a small town north of London to Seattle works better because of the subplot concerning Internet porn, of which Seattle is a virtual hotbed. The downside is that it allows for Alan Cumming's portrayal of a Bill Gates-like billionaire as a near-retarded boy-child. Other actors fare better with their roles, particularly Rachel Leigh Cook and Mickey Rourke, though Michael Caine's presence only serves to draw unfair comparisons to the original. That said, if you buy both versions you will learn more about the state of Hollywood at the turn of the millennium than with a year's subscription to Variety. --Andy Spletzer

I LOVE Sly Stallone. Love the man dearly, but wow, is this movie bad. I really couldn't even make it all the way through, it was so bad. As heralded as Stallone is as an actor, he really only made a few good movies. The Rocky movies, Rambo movies, and Cliffhanger was pretty good. Get Carter was an abomination.

Easily one of Sylvester Stallone's best movies (and best performances), this remake of "Get Carter" was relentlessly bashed upon its release but seems to be gaining more of a following in the subsequent years. It's a good thing too, because if you pass this one up you're actually missing out on one of the most intense and just plain best action movies of the last several years. Carter (Stallone) is basically a bad guy who doesn't want to be a bad guy, a midlevel mob enforcer who it seems gotten into his current lifestyle and occupation rather unwittingly some years ago and now can't find a way out. It never says that in the movie, but that's what I got right from the beginning. He seems resigned to his role until the death of his brother brings him home to his estranged family for the first time in years, where he becomes suspicious that his brother's death wasn't an accident. When his sister-in-law and niece begin to be terrorized by some unknown assailants, Carter goes on the warpath against whoever's after them and whoever killed his brother, turning his violence loose without reserve. The bond he forms with his niece (played by Rachel Leigh Cook in a big change of pace from her comedic roles) seems to galvanize his courage to not only pursue his current targets but to re-evaluate his whole life and the choices he's made and the position as a common thug he's lived in during recent years. Very effective use of inner drama intermixes with tension and top-of-the-line fight scenes to make this a cut above many similar movies. Was ripe for a sequel but it appears unlikely one will materialze. "Get Carter" is disturbing, sursprisingly realistic, populated with well-constructed characters both good and bad, and kicks Way into full-throttle whenever the plot calls for it. A great choice for action fans and non action fans alike.

This is a cool and much improved remake of the 1971 GET CARTER.

Brief synopsis....

"Bad brother" and occupational debt collector returns home after 5 years to attend his younger "good brother's" funeral.
It becomes quickly apparent the circumstances of his brother's death are not what they appear to be.
Stallone makes up for his failure to be a part of the family these past few years by getting to the bottom of things and "making things right".

With dark rainy imagery, some upbeat soundtrack movie and good acting by not only Stallone but Rourke and Leigh, this is a great film that deserved more attention.

Only the casting of the billionaire computer-geek is bad casting.

My wife loves this film so much she watches it at least once per month !

This is worse than my eighth birthday party. Some kid brought his pet Teradactyl and let go of the leed. Also, the hired band 'The Caz Dolowicz Experience' didn't show up. Something about a hijacked subway train. They think we're mugs? Anyway, the photography in GC was worse. Everbody too big in the frame and sort of artless and wobbly. How does Rachel Leigh Cook manage to appear in so many disasters? Does she have a homing beacon in her nose? It's a very small nose which just goes to show how amazing technology is today. Stallone looks like he's on Dialysis. I didn't watch the end. It either ends in a friendly game of Jim Rummy or a blowtorch enema. Gosh, I wonder.

For Get Carter, the able Michael Caine checked in his likable working-class-bloke persona to play a very unlikable working-class bloke, London gangster Jack Carter. Heading "up north" to get to the bottom of the recent death of his brother, he runs afoul of the local color, who don't appreciate his meddling. Not content to accept the police report of suicide, Carter begins investigating. He encounters the local mob boss, his sleazy chauffeur with eyes like "piss holes in the snow," and the lovely town porn star. The film moves along at a leisurely pace, until Carter finds out the grim truth. The final third of the film has Jack Carter on the vengeance path. No one in this film gets a happy ending. When it's over, you feel as though you need to wipe the soot off yourself and go stand under a sun lamp. The British board of tourism would prefer you didn't watch this film. --Kristian St. Clair

Hodges's bleak, slow-burning revenge thriller features Caine in one of his chilliest roles, playing a slimy, working-class London enforcer whose morals are as twisted as the people he seeks to destroy. "Angry young man" playwright John Osborne is particularly good as Carter's nemesis, Kinnear, Britt Ekland has a minor but memorable role as a gorgeous porn star, and the wonderful Ian Hendry gets high marks playing Carter's greaseball chauffeur. With its grimy urban tenements and dun-grey skies, "Get Carter" provides an appropriate backdrop for Carter's violent, cold-blooded reprisals, and opened the door for similarly antiheroic crime films to come. Steer clear of the 2000 remake.

Cool Caine.......2007-05-31

This film along with the "The Long Good Friday" and more recently "Sexy Beast" remains the very best of British thrillers.

Caine is in magnetic form as Jack Carter. It certainly isn't a coincidence that the two main characters in UK TV series The Sweeney took half each of this characters name (Jack Regan/George Carter). Jack travels back up to north to investigate his brothers death and things spiral out of control from there. You will spot many well known faces amongst the cast including, Britt Ekland, Ian Hendry and Glynn Edwards (well known as the barman in the UK TV series Minder).

The film has some classic lines in it such as "you're a big man..." and is blessed with a wonderful music score by the Jazz Pianist Roy Budd. The main theme is a truly haunting piece.

This is highly recommended. The remake with Stallone on the other hand is a film to be avoided!

Caine Does A Great Gangster.......2007-04-09

Among English movies, 1971's "Get Carter" is always cited as near the top gangster/crime movies ever made. Based on Ted Lewis's ferocious book "Jack's Return Home,"it was adapted for the screen, and directed by the British Mike Hodges, who's got a gift for this kind of thing. The British best people the cast: Michael Caine in his prime, as Carter; backed by Terence Rigby, George Sewell, Bernard Hepton, Alun Armstrong, and Ian Hendry. Britt Ekland (Mrs. Peter Sellers to you) played the love interest. And well-known English playwright John Osborne plays Kinnear, an important supporting role.

The movie opens as Carter, enforcer/hit man for a London mob, who's carrying on with his boss's girlfriend (Ekland) learns his brother has died back home in Newcastle in circumstances Carter deems suspicious. Against the wishes of his boss (Rigby), he decides to head north to investigate. He travels upcountry on a very smoky train reading the American hard-boiled author Raymond Chandler's "Farewell My Lovely" as he goes. Once home, nothing and no one will dissuade him from finding the truth -- fast and furiously -- and then taking a very bloody revenge on all concerned.

"Get Carter" packs a lot in its less than two-hour length. It preserves, more accurately than any other movie known to me, a snapshot of the sour swinging England of the 70's. And it makes inspired use of the aging industrial city Newcastle. The rusted chimneys against the sky, the graffiti, the miles of streets lined with traditional 2-up, 2-down cottages, the tear-down-candidate pubs and betting parlors with primitive toilets out back. Add the constant overcast sky/rain; the grey menacing northern sea. The little touches are also important: a knitted purple tea cosy, and a chamber pot under the bed at the boarding house where Carter stays. The clumsy provincial kids at a dance hall. And then there's the just right jazz score.

But it's Caine's movie, of course, and the theory goes that gangster pictures depend totally on the power and energy of their stars: consider James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, George Raft. Caine almost shoots sparks as a sexual predator in his phone sex scene: he achieves a double seduction; Ekland on the phone, his landlady in the room with him. His feral smile at a pub cat fight, and at the end of the picture, as he moves to avenge his brother's death, is bone-chilling. Yet he's able to cry at an important-to-the-plot porn movie.

As an actor, Caine, who was born a London cockney, has played gangsters as coldly menacing as they come, and maybe we're lucky he's strictly an actor. One of the smaller gangster roles here, Sid Fletcher, is played by a man called John Bindon, who was, in fact, a London gangster. British director Ken Loach first used Bindon to play a London villain in his now little-seen "Poor Cow"(1967). Bindon went on to work in a number of movies and tv shows, always playing a villain, until he decided working as the real thing paid better. After Bindon took part in a bloody Soho shootout, not even his British duchess girlfriend could save him. He died as a guest of Her Majesty: of AIDS in a none-too lovely jail cell. But Sir Michael Caine is still with us, no longer a pretty boy, to be sure; but he still adds something to every picture he makes.

Exceptional movie !.......2007-03-29

The creme de la creme of British gangster flicks encapsulating an undercurrent of evil and excess. Caine is excellent as the jaded Jack Carter travelling north to find out how his brother died , ably supported by a galaxy of great British TV and film actors.

Do not mention this in the same breath as the Stallone version - pure rubbish.

Artistic Action Movie.......2007-03-24

So there is this guy named Carter (Michael Caine) who works for the mob in London. He's not a nice guy, though he does seem to have a way with the ladies. He also has an aura about him that makes him unmistakably cool.

At the beginning of the film Carter learns that his brother has died under mysterious circumstances, so he journeys to the industrial town of Newcastle to figure out what's going on. During the course of his investigation he manages to anger his employers so he ends up taking on the whole world alone, much like a detective from a classic novel or film.

The movie has a slow pace, like many of the cop movies from the late sixties and early seventies. It's also shot rather artistically for an action film, so it's not for everyone, but if you're looking for a film with a cool, somewhat unlikeable protagonist who's out for revenge and will stop at nothing to get it, than this might be for you. It's very similar to the film "Payback," in that regard.

This was a good movie with good acting. My only draw back was the excessive violence.I also wish the ending was different but for those who enjoy this type of drama go for it you will not be disappointed. As usual Lee Byung Hun was great.

In the same vein as "Oldboy" comes "A Bittersweet Life," a movie so good it shocked me when watching it for the first time. It's a violent revenge movie with a gripping story with some fantastic actors such as Byung-hun Lee. He stars as Seon-woo, an enforcer for President Kang, a very dangerous man and if he wants to get rid of people, Seon-woo is the one taking care of it. The most interesting thing about this movie besides the story being so great is Seon-woo himself. The way Byung-hun Lee has captured the character sure tells that he's a great actor and what's keeping the movie alive from beginning to end. Seon-woo seem to know nothing about what it's like to have a "normal" life, as the world he lives in is only filled with evil and violence. He has a hard front, can be violent and nasty without remorse, but its fairly easy to see through all that and see that he has a gentle side as well, and that makes him interesting.

For instance with all the violence going on in the movie it sometimes seems like he has no conscience and couldn't care less about what happens to other people. His face is like stone with no expressions to reveal what he really feels, if anything. But at the same time you know that there's something more underneath it all, like when he's around the mistress you really get to see that there's more than one side to him, and that makes him a really likable character. Actually, the further the movie goes, the more likable he becomes and you can't help but feeling sorry for him which is a really effective part of the overall experience.

As reviewer K. Jones has put it, this movie does mixes violence and emotions in an excellent way, and even if the violence is a bit too brutal at times, you still have a lot of "nice" things to fall back on. There are a lot of action elements and the movie is quite stylish to say the least, but the most important thing is that it's not the least bit shallow and while its entertaining eye candy at times; you still really care about the characters and what's going on. This is easily one of the best Korean movies I've seen this year, and a movie that I will probably enjoy watching many times in the future. If you're a fan of "Oldboy," you're most likely to find "A Bittersweet Life" to be pretty sweet, both dealing with the concept of revenge but very different from each other. I also recommend "A Tale of Two Sisters" which is also fantastic.

I just can't get enough of these Korean revenge films because they're just so different and unique from your normal revenge plot. Now of course a film like this or one of the films from Park Chan-wook's "Vengeance trilogy" won't be appreciated by all simply because some may think they go to far with the amount of violence. It really depends on what your limit is but I had no problem with any of these films.

Sun-woo is a mob enforcer and a darn good one, as you'll see in the beginning. While eating desert in the restaurant he manages Sun-woo is alerted that there is a disturbance downstairs. Sun-woo quickly grabs someone (Min-gi) to help handle the situation. Three men are refusing to leave so Sun-woo tells them they have three seconds to leave and starts counting down. When he gets to 1 he tells Min-gi to lock the door. It's a little hard to explain what happens after the door is locked but let's just say Sun-woo handles the situation. Sun-woo has been working for his boss Kang for seven years and has not made a mistake in all those years but everyone makes a mistake at least once in their life. Being in the mob he knows that he can't mess up but what happens is something that he couldn't help.

Come to find out the three men Sun-woo beat up were men from a rival mob family. This was not Sun-woo's only problem; actually this situation only provides half of the story's plot. While avoiding to talk to the boss of the rival family Sun-woo is asked to do something important for his boss. Kang has a mistress (Hee-soo) and suspects that she is seeing another man. Because of the age difference Kang believes that she is tired of him and is seeing a younger man. He asks Sun-woo to watch her for three days while he is away on business. Not only does he have to watch her but also he has to drive her and basically be attached to her hip. If he does find that she is seeing someone else Sun-woo is to either call Kang or take care of it himself. Sun-woo starts to fall for the girl and when he finds that she was unfaithful he can't finish the job.

After all this Sun-woo is caught by the rival family and that's when the good stuff starts. The film just goes crazy, after a few events I won't tell cause I don't want to spoil the film but after them Sun-woo goes on a revenge spree. No matter how bad the pain gets Sun-woo refuses to say sorry or show any remorse for any of the things he's done. He won't stop until he sees the situation to the end and let me tell you he definitely does. For the rest of the film it gets very nasty and bloody for Sun-woo and the men that have wronged him.

I was amazed to see Lee Byung-Hun (Addicted, Everybody Has Secrets) in this film, he did great fight sequences and just an overall perfect performance. The acting in this film was great, very realistic and believable but not over the top. The settings and picture were beautiful, great camera work and very good sound quality. I liked that Sun-woo felt like a real person. At the end when he confronts everyone he seems like a person that has been very hurt and insulted over the reasons he's been attacked. I didn't really see any flaws in A Bittersweet Life but some people will for their own reasons, which I do understand. I do hope that nobody takes this film as trying to bite off of Chan-wook's trilogy because you'll miss out. It's definitely not as complex as the trilogy but at the same time it has its own style and feel to it. Anyone that just wants to see a good film with a simple plot then I definitely encourage you to see this.

solid action movie.......2007-03-05

This isn't going to win an award or anything, but action movies don't get that kind of recognition anyway. This is what I would call a smart action movie. There is good character development, coupled with action that isn't too over the top, killing any suspensed disbelief. I like Korean movies because there is usually an undeniable syle, and they tend to be darker than most american movies. This isn't the cream of the crop for Korean films, but it is entertaining and it does have substance.

I just wanted to say that this movie was everything that I thought it would be. I have been trying to get a copy of this movie for 10 years and no one could seem to help. One of the better 70's movies. Shouldn't be classified as a blaxplotation movie. Really good. Pam Grier looks amazing and she shows it all. Worth the money

This is the story of a bad brotha from Oakland who comes to L.A. after his brother is murdered. He later finds out that his niece gets "forced" into porno and later murdered. He then sets out to murder everyone directly involved, from a porno actress (Pam Grier) to a theater owner (Ed Cambridge) to a man he looked up to as a child (Rudy Challenger) to a mobster (Don Diamond). Don't be mistaken, the Bernie Casey character is not a nice person. He treats women like crap and kills without conscience. This film is not in the class of "Superfly", "Shaft" or "The Mack", but it's entertaining. I was in high school when this film came out and I saw it on the big screen back then (1972).

It's good to see quality classic black movies.Bernie Casey plays a pretty tough role as the star of the movie.Pam Grier gets thrown to the lions(for her part in Bernie's sisters death.)A must have for your classic black movie collection!

The best movie of 2001 by far. A little known Canadian jewel that will leave an impact on you long after the cathode flicker has faded. Superbly layer and texturing psychological thriller which pits a gang of urban thug against a tree-bound wing-tipped marketing executive. It become of war of endurance as wit and psychology pit against each other in a battle of the Minds.

What's up Murray?.......2003-11-15

I happen to see this movie quite by accident, and am glad I did. Its not an action movie, or comedy, although there are some funny parts. There are some serious issues in this movie, and the best part, like real life everything does not get resolved at the end of the movie. It leaves you thinking and pondering both how you would have handled this situation, but it also opens your eyes to look past yourself. Murray learns a lot, about himself and about a group of youth, one guy in particular. The youth learn something as well. Lessons are learned at a great cost. A good movie to watch if you work with young people.

Dramatic, yet inspiring.......2003-08-01

When it first started I thought it was gonna be totally different. I thought that the white guy would be caught in the middle of two gangs and see if he survives. Turns out he gets stuck, they hide from the gang, and they live. With all the anticipation to see whether or not cle' bennet and his gang get the man out of the tree is a cliff hanger. But in the end is a twist. You'll have to watch it to find out. Overrall performance, I'd say the loyalty, and then betrayal of words can separate many people...It's the truth everyone is looking for. What's ur truth?

A very good movie. One of the better films David Hewlett has starred in, right up there with Cube. Definitely worth the price. An intriguing look at the good and bad side of society and human nature. David does an excellent job playing Murray, the advertising executive with dirty little secrets and a dysfunctional family life, forced to take refuge up a tree in a city park when he strikes a gang member intending to rob him. I don't know any of the other actors, but they did an equally great job portraying the vicious gang hell bent on getting Murray (David) down. If you're a fan of David's work, I'd definitely get it.

"My stuff will never be lame," says Aaron Carter. Thanks, kid, but we'll be the judge of that. Truth be told, the 12-year-old Carter, brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter (which might have a little something to do with Aaron's rapid ascent in the world of kid pop), has talent. In this DVD package (essentially a showcase for five videos from his third album, with some behind-the- scenes filler), he displays an appealing personality, a face guaranteed to make the girls swoon, a flotilla of makeup artists, wardrobe people, and other handlers, some nifty dance moves, and a rap style that's... well, it's at least as hip as any other white suburban 12-year-old's. And his repertoire, while not exactly groundbreaking, does take a couple of surprising turns, especially in the form of "Iko Iko," the New Orleans standard (written in the '50s and a hit for the Dixie Cups in the '60s). Also included are "I Want Candy" (the Bo Diddley-beat-heavy Strangeloves hit), and the nursery rhyme-like "Clapping Song" (once covered by the immortal Pia Zadora, among many others).

All in all, it's good clean fun--except for the fact that there's something unsettling, creepy even, about watching a prepubescent kid bust moves, rap about "old school" (kindergarten, maybe?), and throw down the "yo"-speak without a trace of self-consciousness. Sure, Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond were polished youngsters too, but they also had a certain innocence that's almost totally lacking here. Case in point: included in the disc's extra features is a trivia game that tells you not only what Aaron's favorite food, color, and Beanie Baby are, but also what kind of motorcycle he rides as well as the title of his mom's new book.
