There are many reasons to recommend Troy as a good ol' fashioned Hollywood epic, especially if you've never read Homer's The Iliad. Dispensing with Greek gods altogether, this earnestly massive production (budgeted at upwards of $200 million) will surely offend historians and devoted students of the classics (for them, there's the History Channel's Troy). But there's politics aplenty in the grand-scale war that erupts when Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) makes off with Helen (blandly beautiful German model Diane Kruger), wife of Spartan ruler Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), whose brother, the Greek king Agamemnon (Brian Cox) prods him into enraged retaliation. Greek warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) brings lethal force to his battles (and there are many of them, mostly impressive), and his Trojan counterpart, Paris's brother Hector (Eric Bana), adds even more buffed-up beefcake to a film so chock-full o' hunks that there's barely room for Peter O'Toole (doing fine work as Trojan king Priam) and even less for Julie Christie, appearing ever-so-briefly as Achilles's melancholy mother. The drama is nearly as arid as the sun-baked locations (Mexico and Malta) that stand in for the Aegean coast, and many critics suggested that Pitt (who valiantly tries to give Achilles some tormented dimension) was simply miscast. But when you consider that Wolfgang Petersen also made The Perfect Storm, there's nothing wrong with enjoying Troy as a semi-guilty pleasure with a touch of ancient class. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Brad Pitt picks up a sword and brings a muscular, brooding presence to the role of Greek warrior Achilles in this spectacular retelling of The Iliad. Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger play the legendary lovers who plunge the world into war, Eric Bana portrays the prince who dares to confront Achilles, and Peter O'Toole rules Troy as King Priam. Director Wolfgang Petersen recreates a long-ago world of bireme warships, clashing armies, the massive fortress city and the towering Trojan Horse.

Think A Summer Place, and you'll probably be humming Max Steiner's wonderfully romantic instrumental theme song, a hand-holding hit in 1959. The movie itself is similarly irresistible, a colorful soap opera about the passions of a pair of dewy-eyed teens and their straying parents. At an island resort in Maine, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue (the reigning teen idols of the day) fall hard for each other. What they don't know is that her father (Richard Egan) and his mother (Dorothy McGuire), lovers 20 years earlier, have rekindled their affair. Both, inconveniently, have spouses, which is what makes this a soap opera. Lovers of camp will find much to savor in the incredible '50s attitudes, and in the innocence of supervirgin Dee ("Johnny, have you been bad with girls?"). Yet the sincerity of writer-director Delmer Daves, cowriter of An Affair to Remember, comes shining through the corn; and the grown-up affair anticipates The Bridges of Madison County by 30 years. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Yummy High Cholesterol '50's Fun!.......2007-06-13

As a social barometer of the times it may be reading a bit too much into "A Summer Place" to proclaim it as an early ripple in the social tempests still to come in the 1960's. Still those of us alive at that time know that in 1959 it WAS controversial to sympathetically portray adultery and teen sexuality as depicted in "A Summer Place". I remember my high school years (early '70's) and how girls who "got into trouble" would simply disappear and you'd never know what became of them until a classmate told you years later of their waywardness (this was still a VERY rare occurrence here in "flyover country" even then; how things have changed). And of course while adultery and divorce were likewise not quite so prevalent "back in the day," they certainly happened but not without considerable burden of stigma for the convention-defying lovers who tossed everything over for their passion.

So yeah, I do think the sociology of "A Summer Place" is significant but that's really the least reason to see it. Mostly it's just maximum guilty-pleasure FUN and a HUGE blast of '50's nostalgia and "attitude" that still has great charm and luster for receptive movie fans.

Rule number 1 is that you must have full tolerance for what we could now call cheesy acting and intensely overripe melodrama. AND ALSO you must be prepared for the intense full-frontal gumball-vivid Technicolor cinematography of the time. Too many viewers can't see beyond the stylistic conventions of the time a movie was made to appreciate the human story being told; what a pity! Think of everyone you know who just won't watch a movie because it's in black & white, or because it's obviously an old, overcooked Hollywood potboiler. You know what? Many of those are GREAT works of art however (like most art) they require that you make the effort to meet them halfway. Think of them not only as theatrical productions but also as time capsules of the era they were created--because that's exactly what they are. And how fortunate we are now to have such easy access on DVD for our enjoyment now!

But enough of the film theory stuff. "A Summer Place" appeals on many levels; the gorgeous cinematography, the convention-challenging story & script, the VERY effective and well-remembered orchestral score, and let's not overlook the cast. Sandra Dee & Troy Donahue do indeed project a kind of youthful innocence that truly is a thing of the past now, but was common in their time. Dorothy McGuire & Richard Egan give it their all as the reunited Pine Island lovers who cannot resign themselves to half-lives of marital indifference or cruelty. And how about those jilted spouses? You gotta love Constance Ford as the scheming, triple-bitter wife interested only in keeping her husband & daughter under her thumb. Look-the DVD transfer shows how she has make-up "frown lines" painted at the corners of her mouth just in case we don't get the point that she's a sullen, PO'd bitter woman. A Snidely Whiplash mustache wouldn't have been gender-appropriate, would it?!? Arthur Kennedy also gives a GREAT performance as Dorothy's bibulous husband who despite his degraded state still musters considerable self-awareness & ultimately inspires our sympathy.

I described "A Summer Place" earlier as a guilty pleasure, but now I want to back off a little bit in closing. This is not really drama that will shake you fiercely like, say "21 Grams" or "Dead Man Walking," however I confess I AM touched by the underlying sincerity of "A Summer Place" and its intent to provoke--gently--some questioning of the Eisenhower era values that seemed set in stone and indeed WERE a cage of oppression for many. Perhaps your appreciation of "A Summer Place" will be proportional to your level of receptivity to such a re-evaluation. All I know for sure is that you enjoy it half as much as I do, you will like it a very great deal indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Summer, Sex and Suds.......2007-05-08

Nowadays novelist Sloan Wilson's a nearly-forgotten footnote to 50's pop culture, but he produced two big bestsellers that were made into iconic films of their time, THE MAN IN THE GREY FLANNEL SUIT and A SUMMER PLACE. Neither picture's a masterpiece, but both are of interest, with SUMMER PLACE having the edge for entertainment value; its tale of angst and lust, senior and junior division, still provides plenty of sizzle. Thanks to the production code, Hollywood danced around sex for years. When films began to address the subject, in pictures like PEYTON PLACE and A SUMMER PLACE, the tone was often breathless hysteria -- there's something of a disconnect when actors coiffed and dressed in high 50's fashion are tossing around Victorian language like "house of ill repute" and "harlot". That said, these movies provide fascinating glimpses of public morality. In today's climate, Paris Hilton's X-rated antics provoke less commotion than Wilson's relatively straightforward adultery and teenage canoodling do here. Attractive performances from Egan and McGuire, nice work from Constance Ford as the embittered, puritanical mother (Angela Lansbury must have been washing her hair that week), and career-defining turns from Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee. As I've said before on this site, Dee's always better than you remember her being. She looks fine here, always maintaining her dignity in a thoughtful performance of material that could easily have turned ludicrous. Throw in a memorable Max Steiner score, a good Warner's DVD transfer, and you've got a great Saturday night movie.

5 out of 5 stars Driving a point home.......2007-06-05

I am in total agreement with Michael on this one.

First of all, Pulp Fiction? Where does that come from? Yes, Saints may feature some glorified violence, but beyond that it resembles in no way any of Tarantino's flicks, be it Pulp Fiction or Resevoir Dogs. I think the closest it could resemble Tarantino otherwise is in the the little funny moments that Duffy includes, like the cat scene. Otherwise, the plots are completely different, the characters are in no way similar, nor are the endings.

Secondly, what kind of person would see the previews for this and walk into it expecting something on par with Fight Club? If you know anything of the background of Fight Club, noone could put it in the same genre or say it has similar features as Saints. Fight Club is a psychological mindbender of a flick based on a book, and it is very faithful to the novel. Boondock Saints is a pure action flick that allows you to analyze moral issues if you feel like it without forcing it on you.

Now, a couple of small points. Willem Defoe's character: Flamboyantly gay, yes. Homophobe, no. He, like many men just wants to love 'em and leave 'em. He doesn't fear gay people in the least.

And lastly, the F-word laced dialogue. If you have ever been to Southy in Boston, you would know that the F-word is as common there as the word 'the.' When you throw a mass of working class people into below-code housing, multiple pubs and a low literacy rate, what else would you expect?

All in all, Boondock Saints is a UNIQUE, well-made movie, that while not groundbreaking, is an excellent movie considering its lowish budget and modest support from major studios (which by the way is one of the main reasons it became a cult hit.)

5 out of 5 stars One of my all times favorite flicks! .......2007-06-03

I had to write this review just to bury the arrogant, nasty cockroach beneath me. Have you ever heard the saying, "if you ain't got nothing positive to say, keep it to yourself"? Not denying your right to an opinion but you've based yours on such a shaky, ignorant foundation you come off as daft. (You alternately claimed it was a Pulp Fiction rip off - which is so out in wonderland I must ask what you were smoking - and that you thought you were getting a version of Fight Club, while praising that tepid piece of manure.)

The movie is certainly one of those, "you like it or you don't" kind of flicks. If you follow the movie's premise of vigilantism and accept that you are going to have a great time. If you gag on the premise, you'll likely spend too much of your time going over your philosophical and moral objections to taking the law into your own hands to enjoy a second of it. And how you would have wasted your time - the movie is just as great as simply a piece of entertaining fluff while munching on popcorn in your living room or bed late at night

1 out of 5 stars Derivative, Pointless, and Insubstantial.......2007-05-22

This Pulp Fiction knock-off was dropped by Harvey Weinstein for good reason; this film is big on fluff but lacks any substance. Even the stylized/romanticized over-the-top violence in this film is done without any aesthetic flare or sincerity. The dialogue is uninspired, the plot is contrived (oh my, the mysterious, impossible-to-kill uber-hitman is the protagonists' long-lost father, I didn't see that one coming!), and the thematic concepts are lazily presented, if at all. One cares so little for the characters, who are little more than set-piece fillers, that watching the film becomes an exercise in waiting to see if some thug will put them out of their misery.

This film was written and directed by an arrogant, self-absorbed, and ultimately self-destructive Tarantino wannabe, who deservedly fell out of favor with Mirimax after haphazardly riding the hipster-action flick wave to get any sort of attention in the first place. The documentary Overnight is a much more enjoyable film that depicts director Troy Duffy's decline while filming this Reservoir Dogs clone. You can almost detect his seething arrogance and malignant self-love while watching this film. If only he had the story-telling skills to back his ego.

If only Duffy had actually explored the tacked-on religious symbolism featured in the film, or if he actually discussed the justification for vigilante justice or the origins of crime and punishment, we would have a film that was, in some small way, relevant. But instead we are presented with a fraud, a Blockbuster-engineered "cult" film that hopes to convince the audience that lacing screaming dialogue with the "F" word and including a flamboyantly gay homophobe in the picture makes it cool.

I cannot understand why this film has achieved cult status other than the simple fact that it did not have a wide theatrical release and Blockbuster Video promoted it as part of its direct-to-video marketing gimmick. Before I saw this film, I had assumed that it was a "Fight Club"-esque film that was bold, stylish, and daring. Instead, this film is an irredeemable waste of time with tiresome action, no plot, mind-numbing dialogue, and a deluge of clichés. What a rip-off. Even the local library refused to take this DVD off my hands...

5 out of 5 stars Has become one of my favorite movies.......2007-05-22

Okay, so I heard all of the hype surrounding this movie when it was being created and was preparing for release and this normally is enough to make me not want to see a movie. I did, however, rent it on a whim early this year and was absolutely hooked! The mixture of hilarity and bloodshed paired with a fabulous cast make it a must see. The deleted scenes contained on the second disc, in my opinion, should have never been cut. They either explain a few things or add to the content in general so be sure to watch them all. Make no mistake though, as much as I personally love it this movie is not for the faint of heart. There are quite a few rather gruesome scenes where blood and gore cover the screen, it is a vigilante movie after all.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-05-14

It was really easy to order the movie. I love this movie and am happy with the condition, it was like new.

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Cry-Baby is the last of Waters's more undisciplined features; he followed it with the glossier but no less perverse Serial Mom. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars What more do you need?.......2007-06-17

Being written and directed by John Waters and Johnny Depp not playing a gay drunken pirate is all this movie needs to be good. Add the fact that Cry Baby is an original version of the cliched movies that have the same plot as Grease. John Waters is a modern day critic of American society and his movies add comedy to the criticism. All his movies are classics and Cry Baby is no different.

The DVD features Commetary by John Waters, deleted scenes, and "It Came From Baltimore" which is a behind the scenes Featurette. The price is good the movie is great, what is stopping you from buying this?

5 out of 5 stars Brillant.......2007-06-13

Great movie. Really Enjoyable. Got my 15 year old cousin to watch it and she loved it. Great cast.

4 out of 5 stars John Waters Best Movie! A Must Have For all Rockabilly's and Squares!.......2007-06-01

This movie holds a special place for me. The fact that my grandpa in the 50's lived in Baltimore and he was a Drape! That man had alot of wild stories. Drapes as John Waters talks about was a gang in Maryland and term used for juvenile delinquints. Suffice to say I often wonder if John and my grandpa ever crossed paths. In fact the character Crybaby is alot like my grandpa he was white trash, he'd been to juvie, he rode a motorcycle, had a leather jacket and a greasy ducktail. He used to swipe cars and get into fights. He also was a musician with band called Rich Rocket and the Automobiles. It was a Rockabilly band he did a song called "Shaking my Dice" a euphemism for you know what, after watching a film warning about the solo act him and his buddies came up with this song as a joke. My Grandpa said they did a 45, the flip was a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" they pressed copies only for the band and after he died I looked all through the attic to find it to no avail I was pretty pissed and sad. His stories and bravado made me want to be a Drape and Rockabilly greaser.
Your probably wondering what this has to do with the movie. Alot, when I was a kid me and my grandpa watched this movie in theatres. He snuck me past my parents who wouldn't let me ever set eyes on a John Waters film. I had a good time and so did my grandpa. He thought the movie vulgar and little stupid because he had become a born again Christian but overall I saw that gleam in his eyes and he said it brought back memories. This movie is hilarious and some of the music in this film is really hokey and corny. The Rockabilly stuff is pretty good since Rockabilly veterans Dave Alvin and James Intveld worked on those numbers. Its pretty surreal and crazy overall it is a mind trip and a delightful one. My grandpa if he was alive would recommend this movie. The DVD has interviews with John Waters, the cast and crew. Waters talks in length about the real Drapes which I found interesting and there is commentary. Some of the musical numbers could've been done a little better, but all in all as my grandfather said after leaving the theater with a smile on his face: "Swell, pretty swell."

3 out of 5 stars can't recommend a purchase.......2007-05-24

Even though Cry Baby is an above-average comedy movie, the thing is, more often than not the storyline is more *silly* than it is actually funny. Johnny Depp's character was pretty good, but he wasn't as much of a bad guy or rebel as you'd believe. Just because he goes around driving a motorcycle and taking a few punches in the face doesn't mean he's a believable bad guy. His character was lacking in that area, in my opinion.

I also felt that the grandmother of his girlfriend (the GOOD girl who sings happy 50's-style rock tunes, instead of the more loud and outrageous Elvis Presley-like rockers intended for the troublemakers) wasn't entirely in character for the majority of the film. I mean, she tried so hard to flat out HATE teenagers who rebel against their parents to the point where she actually stood up to a crowd and mentions how she will not be brought down by them. But then, a short time later when Depp showed up to her granddaughter's musical thing in a motorcycle, for some reason the grandmother forgot that she was supposed to strongly dislike teens who rebel and didn't mind at all that her granddaughter opted to drive away with Depp. Strange.

The musical parts were okay, but most of them were 50's style rockers. You know how the music sounds. No need to elaborate on that.

A pretty decent movie with a few flaws in the way. Pick up some of Depp's other superior movies, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Secret Window.

4 out of 5 stars "You got it baby, you got it raw.".......2007-05-24

Cry-Baby is a hilarious, campy musical that pokes fun at some classic musicals. The movie takes place in Baltimore and is named after its main character Wade Walker (Johnny Depp) who is nicknamed Cry-Baby because of the single tear he's able to shed at will. This unique ability and his devilish good looks drive the ladies wild. He even has Cry-Baby tattooed on his arm under Depp's real Cherokee chief head tattoo and scripted across the back of his leather jacket.

Cry-Baby is a drape, a leather wearing, motor cycling bad boy who hangs with a bunch of other drapes made of up of his pregnant sister Pepper (Ricki Lake), Hatchet-Face girl (Kim McGuire), Wanda Woodward (Traci Lords), and Milton Hackett (Darren E. Burrows); all delinquents in their own right.

One day one of the "square" girls takes notice of Cry-Baby. Allison (Amy Locane) decides she doesn't want to be so good anymore and encourages Cry-Baby's advances. Cry-Baby crashes a square party and takes Allison for a ride on his bike back to the drapes hang-out where his troupe gives her a makeover reminiscent of Sandy in Grease. They sing a duet together and there's a memorable make out scene with everyone wet French-kissing. Cry-Baby teaches Allison the basics of how to French Kiss ("Kiss Me, kiss me hard") which was both sexy and pee your pants funny. Everyone is interrupted when Allison's jilted boyfriend and his gaggle of goons pay a visit and set Cry-Baby's motorcycle on fire. A fight breaks out, the police show up and Cry-Baby is arrested and sent to a detention center until he's 21. There are some songbirds singing in jail reminiscent of Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock but perhaps less choreographed. But bars, conniving girls and angry mothers can't separate Cry-Baby from his true love for long.

Acting wise it is really hard to judge. Everyone was over acting to make a point and these roles are really tongue-in-cheek. As far as I'm concerned this film proves Johnny Depp can do just about anything and still be sexy. Johnny already had a huge following with his success in 21 Jump Street. As for fat girl, Ricki Lake, this came after Babycakes and Hairspray which I think were better roles for her. It looks like she's sporting a pregnant breasts and tummy body suit for her role. I didn't notice any fat stereotypes. She already has two illegitimate kids and gets just as much make-out time as any of the other characters. Even the somewhat deformed Hatchet Face girl gets a lot of action. Special appearances by Willem Dafoe (Batman) as a mean guard and rock star Iggy Pop as Uncle Belvedere round off the cast.

Cry-Baby was written and directed by John Walters who is also the writer and director of the Hairspray musical. You really have to have an open mind for comedy to enjoy this film. I thought it was hilarious, going in with the perspective of not taking it seriously. There are a lot of great one-liners. Would it be on my favorite movie list? Probably not, but I'd watch it again and recommend seeing it at least once. Reviewed by M.E. Wood.

5 out of 5 stars Director's Cut coming!!!.......2007-05-03

This news is about a month old as of this writing, but DavisDVD reported on April 3rd that director Wolfgang Peterson is getting $1M and his chance to go back and put out his definitive version of this historical epic film, much like Ridley Scott did with Kingdom of Heaven and Oliver Stone with Alexander.

Apparently, this new cut will be about a half-hour longer and be much more violent along with more sex. (Rubs hands together...)

It'll probably be released on home video in Sept. 2007.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to the epic film category.......2007-04-17

I know I learned all about Greek history and mythology in high school, but that was too many years ago so I didn't know what in this movie was true to history and what was altered. Maybe my ignorance helped me enjoy the movie more than some. I thought the battle sequences were well done and the costuming excellent. Some of the characters didn't have much to do, while others we were given a good amount of depth to understand their motivations. Peter O'Toole owned the screen in his scene with Achilles asking for his son's body to be returned. Brad Pitt did a nice job with Achilles. The only complaint I have is the nihilistic way the character was written became a little irritating to deal with as the movie went on. Brian Cox is his usual nasty self as Agamemnon and it would have been nice to see Brendon Gleason have a bigger role as Menelaus.

My biggest trouble with Troy is the almost 3 hour length. It didn't need to be that long. A few scenes cut out or shortened would have made a tighter movie. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Troy and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better war movies.......2007-03-18

If you are looking for a great rendition of Homers tale the Iliad then dont bother with this movie. If you are looking for an entertaining movie about warfare during the time of the Greek city states then this is right for you. Not like many other Hollywood war movies where all the good guys live at the end and are able to defeat armies many time their size with little problem...cough...cough...Lord of the Rings. This movie is somewhat realistic where you have the good guys as your fighting soldiers and the higher ups numb or fighting for corrupt or concealed motives (if they are actually fighting at all). The losses of warfare are apparent as some of the more noble and likable characters in the movie lose their lives. It leaves the viewer of the movie wondering if the cost of that war was worth the sacrfices.

5 out of 5 stars An (almost) great movie.......2007-03-09

If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. For the most part, I thought Brad Pitt was an excellent Achilles, although there were a couple scenes where he spontaneously forgot how to act. The battle-scenes are impressive and the personal dual between Hector and Achilles was very well-done: I'd never seen such a well-choreographed fight with spears.

O.k., so they had to condense ten years of war into two weeks (or whatever), but what can you expect for a 2 hour movie? The Trojan Horse is somewhat underwhelming (but I guess that's to be expected since you know how the story ends).

As long as you're not a Homer purist, then "Troy" will not disappoint.

Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skillful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

excellent action movie and the hero Steven Seagal is as always outstanding Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

5 out of 5 stars A Tinge of DIE HARD but Definitely Seagal.......2007-02-07

UNDER SIEGE certainly could be a DIE HARD film if you change the lead character but this film works just fine is one of Seagal's best. Steven Seagal's stoic performance works to his advantage against the over-the-top performances of villains Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Seagal uses everything but the kitchen sink to save the day aboard the Battleship Missouri. This is a good one.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Seagal's best movie so far.......2007-02-07

Steven Seagal is finally coming to Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, to play with his band Thunderbox. Although he has a few more chins than he used to, my boyfriend is thinking of going to see him in concert, so what better way to celebrate the fact a major star is coming to Edinburgh, than to watch a movie?

I'm normally not that fussed about Mr Seagal. I own one of his movies (Marked For Death), but I've discovered, since watching this, that I have so much more respect for him when he doesn't have that ponytail. Which just looks silly on a guy that big anyway. I knew I was going to be watching this, as it was "reserved" for watching on the brand new, HD DVD player that now resides in my boyfriend's sitting room. It was my first viewing of a HD DVD and overall, I was very impressed.

Shock horror, you do actually get to see Steven SMILE in this film, which made me start to like him even more. Normally, he's all serious. It did look like he was going to start dancing at one point, which would have left me cringing, but thankfully, he didn't. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones join him in this movie, including some female nudity from Erika Eleniak, who proves she can handle a gun that looks bigger than her. This is a very stereotypical action movie of the nineties, where terrorists take over whatever it is. In this case, it's a very big naval battleship. Tommy Lee Jones looks like he came straight from the sixties to this point in time. There's not much to the story, but Seagal saves the day, leading everybody along in the process to believe that he's nothing but a lowly cook.

The HD is very impressive, looks great on a 50 inch big screen (some guys have cars - my boyfriend has all his TV stuff and DVDs), the picture has been remastered, and is brighter and sharper than you can possibly imagine. There's no extras on this unfortunately, just a trailer, but some other HDs boast of in movie experiences etc. Shame they couldn't have brought back Steven for a "look back on..." or a commentary, I'm sure it would have been worthwhile.

Definitely the best Seagal movie in my eyes. Get it, watch it!

4 out of 5 stars Under Siege.......2007-01-31

This moive is packed with great actions. It is the one of the best Steven Seagal movie. The storyline may be a bit silly but it is great entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Best Seagal's movie.......2007-01-28

Seagal plays Casey Ryback - a cook (yup, that's right, a cook) who, by the way, is also a trained Navy SEAL trained in unarmed combat, explosives, weapons usage, tactical weapons etc etc etc. Due to some incident in his past he's working as a cook on board a US warship.

Then the bad guys arrive and hijack the ship. A curious plot, but there you go. Naturally they take out all officers ranking higher than the traitor who lets them in but conveniently don't know that Ryback has skills beyond pie-making.

So begins the carnage, as this now somewhat annoyed Navy SEAL decides to take back the ship. With a little help from Miss July 1989 and a few crew members he finds locked in a room somewhere he not only kills the entire army of bad guys but also manages to take out the Korean submarine that wanted to buy the nuclear missiles on board the ship.

If you like a bit of all-action quasi-comedy with disbelief then just go and buy this movie.

Jim Carrey as a schizophrenic murderer isn't convincing, in this melodramatic film about a man obsessed by the Number 23. Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever, St. Elmo's Fire) has unintentionally managed to make a comedy of horrors that really is quite humorous in parts. Walter Sparrow (Carrey) becomes engrossed in a homespun novel about Detective Fingerling, whose life degrades into mayhem because of his obsession with 23's esoteric numerical puzzles. Sparrow's preoccupation with the book follows his botched attempt to catch a nasty dog that bites him, leading one to believe that Sparrow's contraction of rabies might be the cause for his mental degradation. As the story progresses, Sparrow retreats further into Fingerling's world, rife with suicidal sexpots and hardboiled detective sleuthing. His wife, Agatha (Virginia Madsen), also plays Fingerling's girlfriend, sex-crazed Fabrizia, who taunts Fingerling until he stabs her. Back in reality, Walter aims to solve the unresolved crimes in the book, taking it as a murderer's diary rather than as an imagined work. The story is half-baked, though Carrey's portrayal of a mentally disturbed person is what makes The Number 23 comedic. Long, contemplative stares, and over-dramatized acting renders Sparrow a clichéd character, rather than one odd enough to engage viewers. For a better version of almost the exact plot but with a terrorist's twist, see Thr3e instead. --Trinie Dalton

1 out of 5 stars I'm 24...One Year Ago I was 23. *GASP!*.......2007-06-05

I am not one to be spooked by a numerical digit, so I could never really understand what the big deal was. I didn't understand why Jim Carrey's character Walter was freaking out about every "coincidence" involving the number 23 as he read the novel in a weird Zoolander-like voice. I kept thinking 'maybe there's more to it...maybe there'll be a twist in the end that will shed new light and then everything will make sense...maybe...' The film tries to be tense but is at times laughable; one scene comes to mind where Walter, who is now convinced that his problems began because one day a dangerous dog bit him, sees the dog in the road. He turns the car around with his family in it and begins a ridiculous ("dramatic") face-off with the dog in the street. Throughout the entire film, I kept trying to come up with a reason for what the bigger picture was behind the whole thing, but by the end, I realized there isn't one at all. A huge disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Humorous parts, but Jim Carrey is still amazing!.......2007-06-02

Yes, everyone was scratching their heads when they heard that Jim Carrey was going to be in a psychotic thriller. But, with everything Jim Carrey has been in, it's about time he try something COMPLETELY different. I will admit, there were times then I had to laugh at the ridiculous lines, but I don't think it's Jim Carrey's fault. The line was bad, that's all that was wrong with this movie. Jim Carrey took the character and made the best of it. So, I enjoyed this movie and I'm excited to own it on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Read this, no matter what anyone told you........2007-05-18

Before I say anything I want you to read this before you read the other negative comments about this movie. Despite the reviews of the bad plot and blah, blah, blah horrible and judgemental reviews from the magazines.. This movie is one of my Top 5 movies of all time. Finally a mystery movie that I cannot predict what's going to happen next. No bad acting in this movie and the plot and the story are perfect the way they are.. If people were bored while they were watching this movie, then maybe they need help, because this movie is anything but boring. The way the number 23 shows up in various criminal names, bombing dates and even the characters birthday and time. Carrey plays a man that becomes obsess with the number 23 and finds out when he reads the book that it sounds like the author is talking about him and maybe the book was meant to find him. The wife thinks he's crazy, having read the book herself, she thinks it's just another book that leaves an impact on a person. However, his 13 yearold son believes what his father is saying.. Overall, the only thing I would change is to have more information on how to get the number 23 from names, dates, and words. There is many twist and turns in this movie and the story presented by Mr. Fingerling in the book is amazing and the characters are classic and realistic like the conniving people populating the world today. Buy this movie, it is worth every penny.

-OASIS- I'M NO STRANGER TO THIS PLACE WHERE REAL LIFE & DREAMS COLLIDE EVEN THOUGH I FALL FROM GRACE I WILL KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE DON'T BELIEVE THE TRUTH...
I'm a sucker for art reflecting/imitating my status-less existence. I believe certain famous musical bands have written songs about me, so instantly once I found out about this film, I paid full price, watched it ASAP & was NOT disappointed. Infact the last stanza, I wanted to cry, but my male cousin was with me. One message of this film is not to take art too seriously, as it can lead to obsession, isolation, hero worship: almost idolatry. I'm am so disappointed with the negative reviews of this film. Jim Carey's performance reminds me his role in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind: & is a continuation of his alternative 'struggling artist' persona roles. Hmm maybe The Number 23 is based on my life, as sometimes in the 'fever' of loneliness I thought my house had hidden cameras aka Carey's The Truman Show: oh bless the synchronicity & sparks. The number symbology is on par with The Davinci Code & Pi: but is explored vividly & with resounding depth. The soundscape of this film is stunning, the audio really utilises modern cinema's surround sound. There are suicide themes in the film, & some really disturbing/gloomy scenes. If you are into 'esoteric' films that have meaning in this secular pragmatic, soul-less western society inc-corp, then this is the film for you. It caters for a select 'niche' of film lover, whose interests lie in the sublime & 'existential' angst...PS Will deFINitely buy the DVD when it comes out...but I believe this is the type of film that can only be fully ascertained & appreciated when watched on the big screen, soundtrack pumping & no interruptions.

5 out of 5 stars I'm at a loss........2007-04-28

I don't understand what people are not seeing in this movie. The story was unique and complex, changing directions on a dime to gripping effect. The main characters were appealing and the performances excellent - Jim Carrey's portrayal of Walter Sparrow was first-rate. His character begins with an almost surprisingly familiar personality, emanating Carrey's trademark humor and quirks. This makes his character arc all the more dramatic as Walter sinks into obsession and paranoia. The visuals were stunning, the mood was appropriately tense, and the twists (even if you managed to predict some) were highly effectual.

I have to say I really get aggravated with people who give bad reviews to films and describe them as confusing. This is not a legitimate criticism. I've never been confused by a movie. These people just don't seem to get that the answers are not supposed to be obvious, and any outright exposition is supposed to appear at THE END.

I can't think of anything that this film didn't do right. I suspect a considerable portion of the bad reviews are the result of the discomforting feeling of being unable to pigeonhole a film that, in a traditional genre, has the nerve to display such far-reaching ambition and achieve its goals. I actually read a review complaining that the story goes beyond the character's obsession with the number- a professional film critic complaining that the film contains too much plot, too much clarifying history where it was needed. Please explain to me what people are looking for.

5 out of 5 stars HD-DVD version.......2007-06-22

Suffice to say that if you are into HD and especially HD-DVD and have a big screen, I mean 100" or above then this is why you got into HD.

The video transfer is superb, a couple of very minor film artifacts here and there but nothing to write home about.

The audio transfer is also a knockout.

Just get it you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Very good film and a good disc.......2007-06-17

I'm not going to comment on the film itself as you can read up on the film elsewhere but i'll let you know a little about the HD DVD disc itself. If your in the UK, the disc works perfectly on my Xbox 360 Add On so don't worry about buying from the US.

On the disc, there is the film itself (14 minutes extra as it's a director's cut), peter jackson's (first) feature commentary and also a trailer. There is also a 240 minute documentary about the making of the film from start to finish. I started watching it last night not realising how long it was, so i had to turn it off and i'll watch the rest tonight. Nice Layout of the disc (same as any other Universal disc) and the quality of the film is great.

I've not seen this compared to the Standard Def version of the special edition so i cannot compare them, but the HD DVD version is definately one i'd recommend.

Hope this helps...

5 out of 5 stars Wicked fun!.......2007-03-10

Just before doing "Lord of the Rings," director Peter Jackson (who can be seen in a cameo as "Man with Piercings") made an off-kilter horror/comedy movie called "The Frighteners," the tale of the undead and the guy who makes a living off of them. Though "Frighteners" was barely in theaters at all, this cult flick is funny, creepy, well-acted and wonderfully directed.

Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) has seen spirits and apparitions ever since the car crash that killed his wife. Now he operates an amateur "ghostbusting" operation that is supposed to exorcise ghosts from people's houses -- the problem is that the ghosts who haunt those houses are in league with him (Chi McBride as the opinioated afro-ed Cyrus, Jim Fyfe as the nerdy Stuart, and most of John Astin as what is left of The Judge).

Frank's business certainly isn't hurt by the fact that for years after a serial killer's murderous spree, people have died mysteriously of heart attacks. Then Frank starts seeing fiery numbers emblazoned on the foreheads of people who will die, including the husband of doctor Lucy Lynskey (Trini Alvarado). As if trying to stop a specter of death weren't hard enough, crazed FBI agent Milton Dammers (Jeffrey Combs) believes that Frank is the one murdering people. But the evil specter is still killing -- and Lucy is the next victim.

Peter Jackson once said that he has a "moronic" sense of humor, and it shows up in all its glory here -- from bug spray dissolving a ghost's face to a piece of talking oily sludge to a drill sargeant ghost with submachine guns, this is weird and absolutely hilarious. It's the perfect blend of comedy and horror.

But he's also good during the more serious moments, such as Bannister's flashbacks to his wife's death, or the eerie sight of homicidal young lovers dancing with a gun. The opening shot is pure Jackson, with the camera swooping through a window, past fluttering curtains, and though a hole in the attic floor to a screaming woman below.

Jackson also takes the opportunity to poke a bit of fun at more conventional ghost movies: the big Gothic house, crazy old lady, ghost in '70s clothes, and Fox's hilarious turn as a ghostbuster. Nothing horrific is sacred. "There ain't nothing worse than a bunch of pissed-off brothers... that's ALREADY DEAD!" Cyrus yells at one point.

Does it have a flaw? Yes -- the opening scene doesn't seem to make much sense later on in the movie. But Jackson makes up for that with a surprisingly tight, coherent plot, and a satisfying finale that makes more sense than most other horror movies do.

The cast is brilliant, whether it's the twitchy, wild-eyed FBI agent, or the three weird ghosts. Michael J. Fox does an excellent job as Frank, with the right combination of cockiness and pathos, while Alvarado is solid as the idealistic young doctor. But the scenes are reallystolen by Dee Wallace-Stone and freaky-eyed Jake Busey, as homicidal young lovers.

"Frighteners" might not make you believe in ghosts, but it will make you laugh, shiver, and maybe even shed a tear or two. Wildly funny, weird, gross, and sometimes really peculiar, this is Jackson's splatter-gore at its best.

For being one of the shows that's often thought of as an example of reality TV's origins, there's never been much reality in the overly long-lived series The Simple Life. This two-sided, single disc of the fourth (and last) season has even less to do with reality than any of its preceding installments. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are still acting their parts of simpleton celebrities thrust into the "real" lives of regular folk, but during the contractually obligated production of what had become an astonishingly popular show, the poor little rich girls were in the midst of a bitter feud. They hated each others' guts, weren't speaking, and thanks to the machinations of their individual publicity experts, the whole world knew it. Consequently, the two rarely share screen time together except for ample sequences of split-screening, which makes for an even more bizarre pairing for two dim-witted million-heiresses who remain famous for nothing more that, well, being famous. Season four consists of a variety of slices of suburban Los Angeles family life with the wife/mother role being taken over on alternate days by either Paris or Nicole. As usual, they sneer and make fun of the lower class that they visit--all the while showing absolutely no class of their own. Their feud is vaguely addressed in the first episode, with the other nine being fairly rote imitations of their earlier-season forays into the humdrum of screaming kids, grocery shopping, preparing food, bill-paying, and every other mundane things the girls have been coached into criticizing and laughing at by the show's producers. We're invited into some parts of the girls' "real" lives with glimpses into their homes amidst their psychological destruction of others'. But as with the prior seasons, the can't-look-away-from-the-train-wreck aspect is the thing that keeps our attention. They hate us and we hate them, so it's the very definition of symbiotic entertainment. Since they also hate each other there's an extra element of amusement; only don't think too hard lest the fine line between amusement and contempt disappears. Who knows if their feud was real or made up by the genius publicity machines behind their fame. One thing that's not made up and definitely not comical is the gruesome change in Nicole Richie's body as her issues with low body weight reveal itself over the course of the episodes. No matter how much Paris despised her, she should have taken her ex-friend to In-N-Out for a few late-night burger binges (without the purging). --Ted Fry

Description

America's hottest celebutantes, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, are back, and this time, they're taking over the country one family at a time! With their heated rivalry in high gear, the girls compete fiercely to see who would make a better housewife. Each hilarious episode brings a new family, a new challenge, and a new excuse to party! Never mind the fact that there are diapers to change and houses to clean when there are tequila shots to down and strip clubs to hit! Reality television has never been this wild...Simply put, it's simply outrageous!

i love these girls nicole is so funny and it is just so ridiculous in general I can't help but watch what they will do or say next without remorse

3 out of 5 stars Till death do us part, literally.......2007-05-08

This DVD gives a good laugh to all ages, young or old. But it has no meaning to it, really. This meaningless humour is what keeps people wanting more and more. No one will get enough of them :)

4 out of 5 stars Time-Killing Fluff that is rather enjoyable.......2007-05-08

I'll admit it. I have watched every season of "The Simple Life" since the show's premier on FOX several summers ago. I wasn't going to watch the show, but thanks to the no-mans-land of repeats I found myself watching the premier with my mother one evening, and the strangest thing happened: neither of could stop laughing! We watched the entire season cracking up and actually looking forward to the next mis-adventure. The following summer with the double-long "Road Trip" season the same thing happened. I don't know how or why but we found this wildly entertaining. Although by season three it was more of the same and things started to get stale.

While people critisize this season because the girls are rarely together, that is the part I liked the best. You were able to compare and contrast the girls two vastly different styles and wild-scheme. The Simple Life 4 is by no means appointment, or even "good" TV, but it is a very worthy waste of several hours one afternoon.

1 out of 5 stars just wait till next season........2007-05-05

the 4th season is a complete disappointment. but, wait till next season. when paris is sentanced to 45 days in jail, she turns to her lawyer and asks, 'is that a place that sells ale ??' then we get episodes of 45 days and nights in a california 'spa cupcake' with color tv, air conditioning, low-fat no added salt chicken diet, paris drinking her first cup of jail brewed 'buck', and nicole visiting. then again, the judge should have sent paris to the arizona maricopa county tent jail. the episodes of paris working different jobs on the 'chain-gang' would be much more entertaining, especially with nicole crusing by in a limo.

3 out of 5 stars Just not the same.......2007-03-08

First three seasons are just too funny! This season leaves something to be desired. Since Paris and Nicole are feuding during this timeframe, it's just not the same. Still a few laughs.

Imitation of Life (1959)
The last film in Hollywood of director Douglas Sirk (Written on the Wind), the 1959 Imitation of Life--an adaptation of Fannie Hurst's novel--is an endlessly fascinating film that speaks volumes about the American journey toward materialism and the racial tensions that are inseparable from it. Lana Turner plays a white single mother and aspiring actress who takes in a black housekeeper (Juanita Moore) and her daughter (played by an adolescent Susan Kohner), the latter so light-skinned she passes for white. As the years pass and success mounts for Turner, Moore also becomes more comfortable but her status as a domestic never changes. Meanwhile, Kohner's character, chafing against social constraints, rebels at every opportunity and throws a wrench into the perfect order Sirk chillingly captures through the precise, architectural design of his images. On one hand a '50s weepie and on the other a daring allegory, Imitation of Life is an unusual masterpiece. --Tom Keogh

Description

Imitation of Life (1934)
In this Academy Award-nominated Best Picture, Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers are superb as two women with young daughters who build a fortune together. But success doesn't save them from sorrow with the passing years.

Delilah's light-skinned teenager rejects her mother and her race, while Bea must choose between the man she loves and the daughter who loves him, too. Now all of them will pay the price of love in this spellbinding classic.

Imitation of Life (1959)
Lana Turner heads the outstanding cast with Juanita Moore in the second screen version of this emotionally-charged story about two widows and their troubled daughters.

Lora's search for success causes her to neglect her daughter, while Annie's daughter rejects her culture by trying to pass for white. As the years pass, each of the four women realizes that she has been living out an emotionally fruitless existence.

2 out of 5 stars Imitation of Life.......2007-06-21

Great movie! However, I was disappointed in the way the DVD was marketed. I expected the DVD to actually include both films--one with Claudette Colbert (1934) and one with Lena Turner (1959). The DVD is only of the 1959 film. That is the reason for the low rating.

5 out of 5 stars NO IMITATION.......2007-05-29

This film is most certainly not an imitation of moviemaking. In my view
it's a masterpiece ! Douglas Sirk made it his finest work he had ever done
during 1959 for Hollywood. I was 17 years old when I first gazed upon this
wonderful production and was instantly moved by the atmosphere, the camera
direction, the settings, the gowns and jewelry. Especially the music by
Frank Skinner which can be heard almost constantly throughout the movie is giving the audience a very warm feeling of belonging ..
All the actors are giving the best of their acting abilities. Lana Turner is absolutely lovely to look at and is giving one of her finest performances of her carreer. In looks John Gavin matches her beauty easily. The mature daughter roles are mediocre and I think that Sandra Dee misses the ability for strong dramatic acting. The most outstanding
performance was delivered by Juanita Moore. She should have won an Oscar for her role of Annie, but as far as I know she was not welcome on this
ceremonie because racism was still a big issue during that time.
I'm 65 now and has seen this film many times and every time it catches me
from start to finish. Don't miss this movie or your life maybe an imitation after all !

5 out of 5 stars IMITATION OF LIFE.......2007-05-14

This film is a true classic, cover's racial predjudice from all side' as well as a feel good film.Gives a true uunderstanding of what it was like and unfortunatly still today what it is like to be classed as a minority. All the actor's portray very convincing roles. I strongly recomend the film.

3 out of 5 stars Imitation Of Life.......2007-05-13

Not as good as when i first saw it in the late 60's.But a certain tear jerker.

4 out of 5 stars Two phenominal depictions of success, sorrow, self delial, and ultimatly, love. .......2007-04-07

I originally purchased this 2 DVD set for the 1959 Lana Turner /Juanita Moore second screen version which it includes. I was captivated by the emotional storyline, and especially Juanita Moore's presence. A highlight in the film is a Mahalia Jackson singing "Trouble of the World."

After Viewing the 1959 version, I was pleasently surprised to find that the 1934 Claudette Colbert / Louise Beavers version included in this set is even more captivating. While the basic plotline is the same, the characters are a bit more down to earth, and therefore more relatable to most people. There is also a better love story in this version. It is easy to see why it was Acadamy Award nominated for Best Picture.

Having both of these films to choose from is a wonderful option in DVD viewing. The reason I docked it a star, is because I initialy found it difficult to decipher which film was on which side of the DVD, since it was written in such tiny print around the center ring, and so I had to flip the DVD The first couple of times I watched it, until I figured it out. Of course, that could just be me.

Blood Simple made it clear that the cinematically precocious Coen brothers (writer-director Joel and writer-producer Ethan) were gifted filmmakers to watch out for. But it was the outrageously farcical Raising Arizona that announced the Coens' darkly comedic audacity to the world. It wasn't widely seen when released in 1987, but its modest audience was vocally supportive, and this hyperactive comedy has since developed a large and loyal following. It's the story of "Ed" (for Edwina, played by Holly Hunter), a policewoman who falls in love with "Hi" (for H.I. McDonnough, played by Nicolas Cage) while she's taking his mug shots. She's infertile and he's a habitual robber of convenience stores, and their folksy marital bliss depends on settling down with a rug rat. Unable to conceive, they kidnap one of the newsworthy quintuplets born to an unpainted-furniture huckster named Nathan Arizona (Trey Wilson), who quickly hires a Harley-riding mercenary (Randall "Tex" Cobb) to track the baby's whereabouts. What follows is a full-throttle comedy that defies description, fueled by the Coens' lyrical redneck dialogue, the manic camerawork of future director Barry Sonnenfeld, and some of the most inventively comedic chase scenes ever filmed. Some will dismiss the comedy for being recklessly over-the-top; others will love it for its clever mix of slapstick action, surreal fantasy, and homespun family values. One thing's for sure--this is a Coen movie from start to finish, and that makes it undeniably unique. --Jeff Shannon
