"In your satin tights / Fighting for your rights / And the old Red, White, and Blue!... / Wonder Woman!" Could anyone who grew up in the '70s ever forget that super-catchy theme song? Originally packaged as the female version of the Batman TV show (producer Stanley Ralph Ross penned 32 of the caped crusader's episodes), Wonder Woman ended up redefining the campy, comic book genre. The primetime show immediately became a social and cultural phenomenon, attracting a wide audience that continued to tune in to America's favorite socially progressive superheroine.

Looking back on it now, it is easy to see the attraction of this unique show that oozed '70s culture, but was set in the 1940s. While trying to stop a Nazi plane from reaching the U.S., Major Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) is shot down, landing on mythical Paradise Island. The uncharted island is the hidden home to the lost tribe of eternally young Amazon women. The Amazons take in the Major and nurse him back to health. During his recovery he attracts the sympathy and interest of Princess Diana (Lynda Carter, former Miss USA 1973) who is intrigued by the man from the mainland and his tales of the evil Nazis. She decides she must follow the Major back to the U.S. and join the forces of good against the tyranny of evil. So begins the saga of the beautiful Amazon Wonder Woman, armed with super strength, bulletproof bracelets, and the unbreakable, "truth-telling," golden lasso. What sets season 1 apart from the two subsequent seasons is that the pilot and each of the 13 episodes take place during World War II, corresponding to the original comic stories. In this season we see Wonder Woman battle spies, uncover Fausta the Nazi Wonder Woman, stop thieves trying to steal the secret substance of Amazonian power (Feminum), wrestle a Nazi-trained circus gorilla, and rescue an interplanetary visitor held captive by the Third Reich--all of which are priceless.

Included with the pilot episode is an extremely fun commentary track by Lynda Carter and producer Douglas C. Kramer. Also added on the DVD set is the making-of featurette "Beauty, Brawn and Bulletproof Bracelets." Yes, it is very campy, cheesy, dated, and filled with double entendres and subtle innuendos. But below the surface, there is something special that makes the show timeless and a pleasure to watch. Calling Wonder Woman: The Complete First Season a time capsule would be an understatement. But a time capsule in the most wonderful sense of the phrase. --Rob Bracco
Description
Meet the United States' secret and most beautiful weapon in the fight against tyranny: Wonder Woman! Season One of Wonder Woman (the Pilot Movie and 13 regular episodes) retains the World War II era of the super heroine's early comic book adventures. Also captured is the exuberant tone of a comic book come to screen life as the warrior princess, empowered by her sense of a woman's worth and by the mysterious substance Feminum that's found only on her remote native isle, battles a succession of Nazi baddies. Former Miss USA Lynda Carter stars as the heroine who hides her identity behind the oversized glasses of a War Department functionary. But when duty and danger call, she transforms. And the wonders never cease.

4 out of 5 stars Great gift.......2007-04-06

I'm giving this 4 stars because it's a great gift to give as a gag or for office Secret Santa.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Beautiful, Gorgeous Actress of All Time.......2007-02-14

I grew up in the 70s when television was at its best instead of the garbage that's on it today. Of the most raising and gorgeous actresses was Lynda Carter as she star in Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter played the role as Wonder Woman and her civilian life as Dina Prince, and Lyle Waggoner played the role as Steve Trevor. Now in the original pilot that launched this show, it was during the World War 2 ERA. Steve Trevor was sent on a mission to bring an enemy plane before it made its way to the USA. His plane was shot down somewhere over the Pacific Ocean where Steve landed on a beach. Beach is also known as Paradise Island where only woman known as the Amazons live. The leader's daughter known as Princess Diana rescues Steve. When the Island leader realizes that Steve must return to his country she has a competition to see who takes Steve back to the states. When Diana leaves, the islands she is armed with a magic belt giving her tremendous strength, bracelets that can stop any bullet, a tiara that can be thrown as a returning weapon and an unbreakable magic lasso that can force anyone to tell the truth. The thing that was amazing to me is that this show only lasted 3 seasons. However, the show may have lasted only 3 years but it launched Lynda Carter as one of the most beautiful and gorgeous actress of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderland.......2007-02-12

I received all 3 seasons for Christmas and I can't stop watching. I am totally addicted all over again. There are great special features that you just will never get anywhere else. Recent interviews with Lynda Carter (she still looks amazing) are so endearing as she never has regretted a moment of being permanently cast as Wonder Women. She totally loves the character and the series. She has you believing that she would sit right on the couch and watch with you. Gotta love her! The theme music just gave me major flash backs to some great memories. I watched religiously as a child because watching Lynda Carter was like watching my mom but as a super crime fighting super model. Not to mention Diana Prince was so naive, innocent and a heart of gold. That fit me to a T! I never buy DVD's because I get tired of them so fast. That will never happen with this set. God, please let there be a movie and god I hope they can do it justice. Maybe Linda could play the Queen on Paradise Island. Well we can hope.....

1 out of 5 stars Painful to watch.......2007-01-23

I loved this show as a kid, but I watched it recently and was horrified by what I saw; Wonder Woman season one is a military propaganda show. The series was filmed at the end of the Vietnam war, but set during the era of WWII, placing it within the context of a more popular war. In episode one, the pilot, Diana (Wonder Woman) wears her Airforce uniform because she is an Airforce secretary - makes sense so far. But by episode two (and there after), Diana's outfit changed from an Airforce uniform to a Navy uniform, but she still works as an Airforce secretary. How can that be? Diana is an Airforce secretary, why on Earth would she show up to work in a Navy uniform? Can you wear whatever you want in the military, or is the military behind this show? Viewers are subject to both Airforce and Navy officers on screen even though it does not make any sense (and they hog up a lot of screen time with military chit-chat and talk of troop moral). The biggest tragedy is that Linda Carter, the actress that plays Wonder Woman/Diana, actually thinks she's championing feminism and women's liberation by helping women to find the "true Wonder Woman in every woman". But the sad truth becomes obvious in the commentary. Linda Carter/Wonder Woman were used as tools to promote the military during an era of mass anti-war dissatisfaction. Wonder Woman, season one, is painful to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Wonder Woman season 1.......2007-01-12

The acting is really good. The story lines seem plausible too.
