Air America is one of those movies that could have been great, and now maintains its low-key reputation as a typical Mel Gibson film in the wake of his first two Lethal Weapon hits. Originally conceived as a biting black comedy about the CIA's top-secret smuggling operation in Laos during the Vietnam war, Air America lost most of its political sting when it was transformed into an action comedy for Gibson and costar Robert Downey Jr. The film is entertaining as far as it goes, with a few action sequences that explain where a lot of the budget went. If you're in the mood for some Mel, this one is a little off the beaten path, and still contains a percentage of its original potential. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Classic 80s Movie.......2007-05-29
Sarcastic humor on top of a deep message about the American chapter of Viet Nam. I enjoyed the movie and Gibson and Downey delivered stellar performances. Really made you think how our government worked with other governments to deliver Holiday Inns (own and opperate).
Air America.......2007-03-31
I consider this one of Robert Downey Jr. better movies and you have to say that Mel Gibson did a wonderful job as well.
Underrated And Unappreciated.......2006-09-06
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. both in vintage form doing what they both do best - combing action and adventure with just the right amount dark humor. If you are a fan of either there is more than enough to keep you busy and it is well worth adding to your collection.
Air America.......2006-07-05
This is a good movie for the pilots in the family. Not especially for children after a certain age but has alot of action and is terribly funny. Would recommend to adults.
Reality really does bite.......2006-01-24
Gibson's portrayal of a rogue pilot out to make some money above all else sheds light on an all-too-familiar situation that befalls war-torn countries;
Gibson puts on a good performance and is, as always, reason enough to buy the DVD;

Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. are two renegade pilots ensnared in the madness of covert operations over Laos during the Vietnam conflict. They lead the crew of AIR AMERICA, a not-so-secret airline that drops everything from live pigs to opium over villages throughout the Vietnam countryside. Join Mel, Robert and the crazy crew of wartime flyers in the funniest action-comedy since "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Good Morning, Vietnam."

Description
Salva is a kid from a humble neighborhood making a living by begging for money in the subway with his inseparable friend Angel. When begging is not enough, they contemplate stealing. Seeing how well all kinds of prophets and preachers make out on television duping everyone, they decide to do the same. They make up a story about having a healing potion -"Celestial Vermouth"but an accident lands them in jail. The host of the reality show "Hard Hand", where the audience decides if someone condemned to death will be saved (no one has yet), sees in Salva a chance to improve the ratings. He intends to have Salva, who is innocent, judged and condemned, but the audience likes Salva, frees him and turns him into a hero of the masses.

Sharp, Stylish, Familiar.......2005-07-01
No real surprises in the story here (the tone's rather like Frank Capra's been soaked for too long in bitter orange juice), but extremely well-made. Wonderful production design, crisp editing, nice cinematography, and good comic acting, particularly from Jordi Molla as the bewildered anti-hero at the center of the hurricane. If you're in the mood for satiric jabs at our media-crazed age, laced with wicked anti-clericalism, the picture's worth a look.

Description
Con Air- From the hit-making producer of THE ROCK and CRIMSON TIDE comes the hard-hitting blockbuster CON AIR, starring Academy Award(R)-winner Nicolas Cage (LEAVING LAS VEGAS, Best Actor, 1995; THE ROCK), John Cusack (GROSSE POINTE BLANK), and John Malkovich (IN THE LINE OF FIRE)! A prison parolee (Cage) -- on his way to freedom -- faces impossible odds when the maximum security transport plane he's on is skyjacked by the most vicious criminals in the country ... led by the infamous murderer Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (Malkovich)! Buckle up and hang on tight as explosive high-flying action soars to new heights ... and delivers high-caliber motion picture entertainment! Gone In 60 Seconds - English/French/Spanish DVD- Academy Award(R)-winners Nicolas Cage (1996 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS; ADAPTATION, MATCHSTICK MEN) and sexy Angelina Jolie (1999 Best Supporting Actress, GIRL INTERRUPTED; LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER) ride an unstoppable wave of speed and adrenaline in this hot, egdy action hit from high-octane producer Jerry Bruckheimer (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, PEARL HARBOR). Legendary car booster Randall "Memphis" Raines (Cage) thought he'd left the fast lane behind -- until he's forced out of retirement in a do-or-die effort to save his kid brother (Giovanni Ribisi, LOST IN TRANSLATION, TV's FRIENDS) from the wrath of an evil mobster! But with speed to burn and attitude to spare, Memphis hastily reassembles his old crew -- a rogues' gallery including Academy Award-winner Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor, TENDER MERCIES; OPEN RANGE) -- and floors it in a full-throttle race to pull off the ulimate car heist: 50 exotic beauties in 24 hours -- and the cops are already on to them! Directed by Dominic Sena and written by Scott Rosenberg, GONE IN 60 SECONDS is an action-packed thrill ride that comes out fast and never slows down.
Customer Reviews:
Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air DVDs.......2002-10-15
Action films are difficult buisness. Audiences today expect ever impressive action, smooth one-liners and enough explosions to make John McClane jump off a 20-storey building. While these two films don't reach the excellent heights of THE ROCK and FACE OFF, they're still fun entertainment. The pairing of two of Nicholas Cage's most high-octane action-addrenalin films sits together well, with both GONE IN 60 SECONDS and CON AIR making a very satisfying action night. Produced by action maestro Jerry Bruckheimer, CON AIR is one of my favourite Nic Cage films (Second only to FACE OFF). Effortlessly cool, it's a must-have DVD. This has tons of action, smart one-liners, great actors (John Malcovich as "The Virus" and Steve Buscemi as Garland Greene) and the Bruckheimer M.O: awesome action and big things exploding. Great fun. Directed by Dominic Sena, GONE IN 60 SECONDS isn't as impressive, and although Cage is cool, Angelina Jolie doesn't do much. Director Sena (SWORDFISH) spends too much time on un-interesting sup-plots and not enough on fun action set-pieces. The last 20 minutes are very exciting though, with a montage of high-speed chases in trademark Bruckheimer style. Not as good as THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, but if you want a fast car chase flick with incredible action, then this is a must.
The Best.......2002-01-05
Oh my Gosh
Nick is the best Actor ever!!
He always plays the best parts and seems to always be the hero!! Also he and all the actors in gone in 60 Sec. fit the part perfectly!! You go Guys!!
Two great movies one low price.......2001-11-30
I must say this is a fantastic pack! Nicholas Cage is a fantastic actor and these are two of his best films. Con-air is a movie that has it all! It would definetly in my all time top ten films. As for Gone in Sixy seconds a great car flick and the fact that it has Joey Jeramiah from Degrassi Junior high in it makes is all the more sweeter! For the small price it's well worth checking out!
Gone in 60 Seconds.......2001-07-31
Gone in 60 seconds is remade in modern hollywood style with tremendous gusto. The movie never yearns for more energy or excitement. One must admit that the plot is shallow as well as the characters. However, this movie is for those who like a little excitement and speed topped off with tough down and dirty characters played by two of the hollywoods toughest Nicolas Cage and Angela Joule. This movie is for those who want excitement and action. If you want a deep thoughful plot look further.
The Best of Nicholas Cage.......2001-06-28
Two of my favorite movies by one of my favorite actors. A must have for any DVD collection.

Con Air is proof that the slick, absurdly overblown action formula of Hollywood mega-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, The Rock, Crimson Tide) lives on, even after Simpson's druggy death. (Read Charles Fleming's exposé, High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Culture of Excess, for more about that.) Nicolas Cage, sporting a disconcerting mane of hair, is a wrongly convicted prisoner on a transport plane with a bunch of infamously psychopathic criminals, including head creep Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich), black militant Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames), and serial killer Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi, making the most of his pallid, rodent-like qualities). Naturally, the convicts take over the plane; meanwhile, on the ground, a U.S. marshal (John Cusack) and a DEA agent (Colm Meaney) try to figure out what to do. As is the postmodern way, the movie displays a self-consciously ironic awareness that its story and characters are really just excuses for a high-tech cinematic thrill ride. Best idea: the filmmakers persuaded the owners of the legendary Sands Hotel in Las Vegas to let them help out with the structure's demolition by crashing their plane into it. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Con Air.......2007-06-08
Nicolas Cage can play a southern boy real good... He can be kind and tough at the same time....
"Welcome to Con Air".......2007-02-13
...John Malkovich's character (Cyrus the Virus) announces after taking over a state of the art prisoner transport plane. This and many other lines help make Cyrus one of the most charismatic and lovable convicts I've seen in a long time (he is the bad guy in the movie though, but I can't help but like him). There is tons of other great characters in this movie as well, many of them covicts. Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, David Chapelle, and Ving Rhames are all solid as usual.
Yes this is standard Jerry Bruckheimer action fare, but that's not a bad thing. It's a movie made to entertain and that's it. There is loads of comic relief and pleasantly cheesy dialogue that helps to make sure you don't take the film too seriously. As mentioned by others the Unrated Extended Edition DVD has absolutely no special features, which is a little disappointing, but the movie by itself is worth the price regardless.
I expected more.......2007-01-29
Maybe my expectations were a little high. I never saw this movie in the theaters so I recently watched this extended edition on DVD. Nicholas Cage has a terrible southern accent throughout the movie - why - I'm not sure as his character doesn't need to be from the south. And I thought the law enforcement was a bit over the top with the macho, kill everyone, innocents be damn attitude and in fighting. There was a lot a action but most of the time I thought it was just stupid. For example, an under cover cop posing as a con had a concealed gun and the second he was released he pulled it out instead of waiting until he could get the ring leader who had the only other gun. Overall I was disappointed in this movie.
everyone's "favorite movie!".......2006-11-26
ok, well let's step aside from all of the brainiac responses. people can't take away anything from a review if they can't understand the terminology.
con air is a pretty action packed movie. nicholas cage plays a pretty good role, though sometimes his hillybilly accent drives me nuts. the plot is typical action moiveish, but i like it. the budget for this movie was well, quality is great. con air is alot of people's "favorite movie", and with a script written so well, i can understand why.
this movie has a little bit of everything nestled in. you've got plenty of comedy and laughs, some dry humor, some serious action that'll have you on the edge of your seat, and even some drama. the ending will leave you with a sense of relief. yes indeed, this movie combines many theatrical attributes.
Pure Entertainment.......2006-10-13
Despite it's cast of respected actors, 'Con Air' is not a good film in the traditional sense. It's not a good film in the way Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, and/or Taxi Driver is a good film. But for sheer entertainment and high velocity action, 'Con Air' is one helluva movie. Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Best Actor, 'Leaving Las Vegas') plays Cameron Poe, a good man who is sentenced to 7to10 years in prison after killing a man in a bar brawl while defending his wife (Monica Potter). As Cameron waits out his 7 years, his wife gives birth to their daughter and it turns out that Cameron is getting out on her birthday and he's determined to make a good impression. To get from the federal prison he's in to where his wife and daughter are, he must ride on a plane filled with dangerous inmates (besides Cameron, the rest of the men are being transferred to higher security joints). Once the plane begins to move, a plan is set in motion. On the plane is the psychotic, yet brilliant Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich) who leads the crusade of rebellious criminals...With the help of Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames) and all the other inmates aboard of course. Meanwhile, a cop named Vince Larkin (John Cusack) becomes an aide to Cameron as he puts his wits to the test to outsmart Cyrus and the rest of the gang. Add in Steve Buscemi as a hilariously dangerous psychopath and a pre-Chapelle show Dave Chappelle as Pinball, a crack addict...You got a great action movie with some comedic relief. The movie is completely illogical, in almost every aspect. So disregard logic at the door, it's not needed here. But you got to look at the bigger picture here. Is this merely a good action film because of it's high adrenaline? It also has to do with the cast. Most action films have action stars in it. In this film, we're given highly respect and even Oscar nominated/winning actors. You have Nicolas Cage, who's accent sounds a bit fake but is good nonetheless. You got Ving Rhames, who's perfect. You have Steve Buscemi as a pointless character, that you actually grow to like and even appreciate...Then you have John Malkovich. What a completely underrated actor. He's never won an Oscar, a lot of commercial film viewers don't even know who he is, and this guy is one of the finest American actors. Even in this film, the way he delivers his dialogue and that steely look in his eye is just so perfect. As I said...If you want a smart, logical action film. This is not for you. If you want a pull-no-punches action film, with great performances to boot. Here's "Con Air"
