A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

Great Movie.......2007-07-04
This movie is awesome! I've been wanting to get it for a long time and don't regreat a cent of it.
Army of Darkness.......2007-05-18
This movie was great, very entertaining and funny. If you love Night of the Living Dead, this is even better.
Without Embeth Davidtz, this movie is garbage.......2007-04-12
The only thing reedeemable about this movie is the beautiful Embeth Davidtz, without her, the movie is pathetic. Honestly, this movie is one of the worst I ever witnessed. "The Mummy" doesn't even equal its patheticness, and that is saying something!!
WORST MOVIE EVER!.......2007-03-29
Apparently for some reason, everyone loves this movie. They say watch it with fun friends. I did. It was so bad. There is no plot, it goes from one thing to another with no explanation. Unless you don't know a good movie from a bad one, don't get this. The "comedy" in it is so repeatative. He fought the mini version for it seemed like 10 minutes and he fought the deadites in the well for another half hour. The phrase it's so bad it's good don't even apply. It passed that point on how bad it is. The action is horrible, and you shouldn't waste your money or your time on the "greatness" this movie supposedly has. Disgrace to movies and horrible spin off of an H.P. Lovecraft theme.
Great movie - bad transfer.......2007-02-28
I got this one mainly for the commentary track. The quality of the print was hit and miss. Yes, I know they added 15 minutes of footage from various sources, and that would account for some of the inconsistancy of the quality of the print, but there were other parts that are in the standard 82 min. version that just looked awful here. The Universal release isn't the long version, and there are no extras, but IMO the print was better. I understand the Boomstick edition looks even better, though I haven't seen it. Anchor Bay seems to have a history of using bad prints for their DVD releases, and this one would seem to fall into that category. I would recommend this for extreme fans only - just for the commentary, which is pretty good.

Description
Bound in human flesh, inked in blood - and amazingly hard to pronounce - the ancient "Necronomicon" (Book of the Dead) unleashes unspeakable evil upon mankind in director Sam Raimi's (Darkman) outrageously hilarious sword-and-sorcery epic. Back to do battle with the hideous "Deadites", Bruce Campbell reprises his role from the Evil Dead series as Ash, the handsome, shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed department store clerk from S-Mart's housewares division. Demonic forces time warp him - and his '73 Oldsmobile - into England's Dark Ages, where he romances a beauty (Embeth Davidtz) and faces legions of undead beasts, including a ghastly army of skeletons. Can Ash save the living from the dead, rescue his girlfriend and get back to his own time? Overflowing with spectacular special effects, Army of Darkness will make you scream with fear and laughter. In the words of The Washington Post, it's "drop-dead fun"!

Customer Reviews:
Funny.......2007-06-12
Pretty good transfer to HD-DVD. Funny movie. I never saw the Evil Dead series, but I had the XBox game, so I was somewhat familiar. Hope they release the rest on HD-DVD.
One for the hardcore fans.......2007-05-04
Probably the best video transfer we will ever see of Army of Darkness, the lack of any extra material is disappointing, but will probably be rectified with the usual Special or Collectors re-releases they seem to pump out constantly.
Evil Dead/Campbell fans would have already made their mind whether to get this release or not so I will say two things:
Hardcore fans will love the extra quality it offers, casual fans will be disappointed by the lack of features and slightly lacking image quality (may have to do with source material rather than lacking effort)
GREAT QUALITY PICTURE FOR A MODERN CLASSIC.......2007-03-14
Until now, the better print that i have of this movie was the Anchor Bay dvd release.
But this hd dvd surpases it so much. The quality picture is amazing, and the sound is quite good too. Pitty that Universal only put the movie on the record, and no extras at all. But anyway, I have them on the other release.
So perfect, you can see the film grain..........2007-03-06
It's laugh-out-load funny, and it's a fine quality HD transfer as well. Any grain visible in the picture is, in fact, a testament to the quality of the DVD. The grain is from the original film stock. The sharper the image produced, the more obvious the grain will be.
Keep in mind that this was a low-budget production at the time of its release. Removing the flim grain before the final cut is far from cheap.
Get it. You'll watch it over and over, and it'll make a fine reference disc.
Forget the nay-sayers about this HD DVD/DVD Combo .......2007-02-12
This HD DVD represents the best video presentation of the film thus far. The previous Universal and (mutiple) Anchor Bay DVDs just can't match the fine detail and color production of this edition. Even the standard DVD side is a noticable improvement over the other DVDs. The biggest difference (aside from the advantages of HD) is that this edition features the film's intended coloration. The Anchor Bay DVDs have an ugly greyish-blue tint and are heavily filtered with digital noise reduction techniques.
Sure, this HD DVD is only the 81 theatrical version, but not only does it beat the Anchor Bay theatrical version DVDs, it destroys the Anchor Bay director's cut DVDs. The DC DVDs look like a 9th generation bootleg VHS, Anchor Bay should be ashamed of themselves. On a sidenote if you want the best DC presentation on DVD, track down the region 3 Hong Kong DVD released by MGM. It's 96 minutes and perfect, the longest cut anywhere, and will make you feel cheated you ever invested in the unwatchable Anchor Bay DC editions to begin.
Also this HD DVD/DVD Combo only has the film's theatrical trailer, but what can you expect when Universal never created supplemental features for the film. All that was Anchor Bay's doing. Sure, it kinda sucks it's so bareboned, but there is a rational explaination as to why.
So in short, this HD DVD/Combo Combo is a worthy purchase for any ED fan.

Description
Bound in human flesh, inked in blood, and amazingly hard to pronounce, the ancient "Necronomicon," or "Book of the Dead," transports a department store clerk and his '73 Oldsmobile into England's Dark Ages to face legions of undead beasts in director Sam Raimi's (A Simple Plan) outrageously hilarious sword-and-sorcery epic starring Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead).

ok so I like some B-movies..........2006-06-06
and this is one of the Bs that I liked. Ok, I'm a sucker (pardon the pun) for vamp flixs and novels (jeanclaude from anita blake is among my top 3 fave vamps). When I saw the movie at a local BB, I decided to give it a try. Well, the accents kindof gave it away that its not american, and that dude's supposed Texan/Ark/LA/MS accent made me laugh at times. not because its cheezy, but yes I actually know people who talk like that. The low budget was apparent from the beginning, the storyline wasnt top notch, but I thought it was a pretty decent B-movie. I just wish that the ending had a better way of closing the movie and not left me hanging with the 'what if'. If you want 'typical hollywood' boring vamps rent Interview with a vampire. If you're into the B's give Reign a rental try.
Negative one (-1).......2006-05-23
One word DEPRESSING i mean the ending thats where you say the 5 miuntes of action if you can call it that
Not worth the money to rent it.......2005-06-04
The best thing about this movie is the pic on the cover. I thought i'd give it a chance, but was sadly disapointed. The story was borring. It needed to be fleshed out a lot. The acting was horable. The special effects looked like they hired a kindergarden class to do them. The filming looked to be done with a hand held camcorder. The only reason it got one star was cause the picture on the cover was good enough to sucker me into renting this. Do yourself a favor and rent Blade instead.
Surprisingly good, despite many bad points.......2005-04-23
Detailed plot: Michael Dorn, a hired chemist, creates a virus that turns people into artificial vampires (he was working on a cure for HIV). Dorn is accidentally infected and goes on the run from his employers. Those same employers, called "The Counsel", send a vampire "half-breed" and an Ex-Marine with a grudge after Dorn. Meanwhile, Dorn finds out that the Counsel wanted a virus that made vampires and used the HIV cure as a cover-up, so he begins to systematically destroy everything and everyone involved.
Pros: The plot and the writing is great. If I could get a Hollywood movie budget and make the same movie with the same script, it would be superb.
Cons: Bad acting (half of the actors have accents, half don't, and only one is good at delivering lines and facial acting), low budget special effects and cameras, cliffhanger ending.
But, to tell the truth, despite the cons, the script really kept me interested and made me stay until the end. I recommend it for fans of the vampire genre and B movies in general :-)
Pretty men, bad actors, good low-budget effects.......2005-02-11
I kinda enjoyed this one, myself. But I won't say it's a great movie.
It's nice to see a low-budget vampire movie, where the actors wear fangs and black contact lenses instead of rubber demon heads or overdone computer effects. I've always found people scarier than F/X, myself. Still, the UK vampire miniseries ULTRAVIOLET managed with less.
And if you like to watch shirtless well-built young men posing with leather and weapons, well, now's your chance. Yes, late wives are mentioned, and there's nothing blatantly gay, but the only women onscreen are victim cameos, and the men pose a lot.
Mind you, if you want good scriptwriting, acting, or directing, you've probably come to the wrong movie. But it's underdone rather than entertainingly cheesy. Except, of course, for the Australian attempt at a Texas accent in one of the bad guys, but hey, they probably find American attempts at an Australian accent equally funny.
Did I mention directing? It's the same quality as the rest of the show. Picture a climactic scene where the hero stands immobile under the only light in a dark room, while the lead vampire circles around him, gesturing and lecturing, for at least five minutes. Talking heads much? Dynamic it's not.
So if you're looking for a feature movie, you're out of luck. But the quality's about right for a (one-episode) TV show; it's not as bad as PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE or suchlike.
