While 2003's Daredevil was a conventional superhero movie, the 2005 spinoff, Elektra, is more of a wuxia-styled martial arts/fantasy flick. Elektra (Jennifer Garner) has returned to her life as a hired assassin, but she balks at an assignment to kill a single father (Goran Visnjic, ER) and his teenage daughter (Kirsten Prout). That makes her the target of the Hand, an organization of murderous ninjas, scheming corporate types, and a band of stylish supervillains seeking to eliminate Elektra and tip the balance of power in the ongoing battle of good vs. evil.

As the star of Alias, Garner has proven that she can kick butt with the best of them, and some of the visual effects are impressive, but the action sequences tend to be anticlimactic, and there's not much to the story. Fans will notice numerous references to Frank Miller's comic books, but there's very little resemblance to Miller's cold-blooded killer (Elektra with an agent? Elektra referring to herself as a "soccer mom"?).

Is Elektra better than Daredevil? Not really, even with the distinct advantage of having all Garner and no Ben Affleck. That could be the spinoff's greatest disappointment: after Spider-Man 2 raised the bar for comic-book movies, Elektra lowered it back to Daredevil's level. Directed by Rob Bowman (the X-Files movie), and featuring Terence Stamp as the mysterious mentor Stick, Will Yun Lee (Die Another Day) as the chief villain, and NFL-player-turned-mixed-martial-arts-champion Bob Sapp as the immovable Stone.

DVD features
Ben Affleck's much-rumored cameo is one of the deleted scenes on the Elektra DVD. It's a one-minute throwaway, and while he's supposedly appearing as Matt Murdock (who romanced Elektra in Daredevil), the barrage of celebrity gossip makes it impossible to see him as anything other than Jennifer Garner's real-life boyfriend. There's also a making-of featurette, which is mostly promotional hype other than a few interesting effects shots; four editing featurettes; and Jennifer Garner's videotaped message to ComicCon. --David Horiuchi

1 out of 5 stars ELECTRA?? COME ON YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!?.......2007-06-17

First off the fact that this movie got made before an Iron-Man, Thor,Captain American and The Avengers, and the list goes on movies is ridiculous!I thought Daredevil was good, it could have been better, but I was fairly happy with the end result. I bought the director's cut ,but have not gotten around to watching it yet.I have heard it is much better than the original. OK now back to Electra. This movie is boring, stupid, poorly acted and.....do I need to continue? They should have worked on Daredevil 2 instead of this piece of garbage! Unless your a completest Marvel movie nut, avoid this one at all cost!

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-05-31

If you liked the theatrical cut of Elektra, you might be wondering: is it worth the money to buy the director's cut? I would say no. Differences in the two cuts are minimal. If you've seen one, you've pretty much seen the other.

Director Rob Bowman writes that he spent approximately 14 weeks "personally handcrafting the movie [director's cut] for home theatre" in that he "re-color-timed every shot, changed some of the music, added in new footage, added visual effects" and remixed the sound specifically for a home theatre system. Maybe when you're as close to the work as Bowman all that makes a great difference, but as the end recipient of all that effort, honestly, I can barely tell the difference.

So if the director's cut itself isn't worth the price of admission, what of the special features on the second disk? They're fairly lame. I was especially disappointed by the history of Elektra in comics. On several Marvel movie DVDs lately an "extra" has been an in-depth history of a particular comic book/character, from its beginning to the present, and interviews with many of the creative folk who've worked it over the years. In particular the retrospectives on the Punisher and Avengers were both excellent.

That is not the case with the Elektra retrospective. The interviews with important creators (Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz, Brian Michael Bendis, Greg Rucka) are all there, but the material is presented in an extremely disjointed fashion, and there are many obscure references to other creators, other storylines, other industry personnel spread throughout that are never followed up on or explained. This will all be horribly confusing to anyone but a long-term, hardcore comics fan. I've been collecting comics for decades and have read most of the stories featuring Elektra so I was able to follow what was said; actually there was little here that was new to me. But as I watched this thing I was struck, again and again, by the thought that, had I been simply the average, non-comics-geek moviegoer, there were so many moments when I would have had no idea what they were talking about.

As to the Elektra movie per se, I liked it. And that surprised me because I despised everything about the Daredevil film including Jennifer Garner's Elektra. The Elektra movie is much better. I have to give Garner credit, after the critical drubbing and mediocre box office response accorded Daredevil, for having the guts to revisit the character. Having now watched her play Elektra in a decent movie, I realize that in Daredevil, along with everyone else in the film, Jennifer Garner was simply the victim of a bad script and director.

I give the theatrical cut of Elektra four stars. Not a great movie, but a pretty darn good little super-hero flick. I give the director's cut one star, not because it's any worse than the theatrical cut, but because it's not significantly different, thus can't justify its own existence.

4 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations.......2007-04-16

I put off seeing this movie for over two years because it had been so widely panned by both critics and moviegoers. But, I rented it as part of a two-for-one deal at my local videostore and was glad I did.

Is Elektra a great movie? No. But it's good. Make no mistake, Batman Begins was a better film all the way around, but Elektra had similar elements, particularly in the back stories (both heroes lost parents when they were young, both were trained in ninjitsu and other martial arts.) Elektra was a bit darker, for lack of a better term, than other Marvel comics-turned films such as The Hulk, X-Men or The Fantastic Four.

In essence, Elektra is a martial arts film. It has many asian elements and themes. While many comic book superheroes acquire their powers by mutation, radiation or some other technological disaster or circumstance, Elektra's powers are mystical and learned, giving the story an eastern, not western, flavor.

The action sequences are well done. The scenes are nicely shot. Very little of what takes place is so unbelievable as to be silly or ridiculous. Jennifer Garner brings much of Alias to this role but it works.

I'm not sure I would buy this movie but it's worth a rental, especially if you like action/adventure films.

1 out of 5 stars Quiet possibly the worst movie ever.......2007-04-06

Not even Jennifer Garner in tight clothes could make this movie worth a second watch or first watch come to think of it. AVOID AT ALL COST.

4 out of 5 stars Elektra - directors cut.......2007-03-16

Really enjoyed this movie. Crisp visuals with vibrant colours, great sound, interesting plot and character development (not always the case in comic based cinema). Plus Jennifer is a babe!

The extras (sadly absent from the Australian release) were interesting though not all of them will receive repeat viewings!

Well packaged too, also contains a mini comic book for fans of the Elektra "graphic novels". A worthy addition to "Superhero"/"comic book" dvd collections.

There's little doubt that this two-volume concert and documentary package will appeal to die-hard Metallica lovers--given its more than three-hour length (two and a half for the concert segment alone), the band's predominantly white male fan base (repeatedly addressed as "man" by singer-guitarist James Hetfield) will be--in fact already are--ecstatic. But one wonders, especially given the erratic history of rock-cum-orchestra experiments, whether S&M will win Metallica any new aficionados. The fact is that the presence of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by composer Michael Kamen, adds texture but not much else of significance to the Metallica sound. The band is so loud that it tends to overwhelm even a 100-plus member orchestra; what's more, Metallica's crunching, fist-pumping, riff-laden metal music lends itself less to genuine orchestral adornment than to superfluous bombast. And while the sound quality is excellent, it's still basically just a filmed concert, with little in the way of additional visual interest. Still, there are some cool moments, and all involved are clearly having a great time. There are also two new Metallica songs, "No Leaf Clover" and "Minus Human." (Note: also available is an edited version, sold at a slightly lower price, which corresponds to the popular PBS broadcast. The longer version carries an explicit content advisory label, due to much casual profanity, especially in the "making of" documentary.) --Sam Graham

Description

Metallica, never resting, never ceasing to innovate or amaze, returns with an extraordinary document of their concert with the San Francisco Symphony. Metallica's select favorites unfold like never before with the eloquent symphonic backing; they have never sounded more powerful or dramatic. The performance includes two new songs--"No Leaf Clover" and "Human."

5 out of 5 stars Metallica Delivers -- S&M does not disappoint!.......2007-02-19

Not being a huge Metallica fan I wasn't sure what I would get with this DVD. Obviously I enjoy enough of their music to take a chance on this. Hey the concept of a head banger band combined with a symphony was very intriguing. And it delivered far more than I ever imagined. Having played in a symphony for 5 years during my school days -- I was more than a little concerned about the symphony's arrangement and hoped that Metallica wouldnt just drown them out. Michael Kamen (or whomever) was masterful in blending the symphony together with the metal to provide a very robust and rich sound. And the band doesnt overpower the symphony at all. As a metal head banger I was also worried that they would produce a milk toast or watered down version of Metallica -- again no worries mate! Metallica sounds great and the symphony adds an amazing texture to them. The DVD visually is very well done -- cameras transition from musician to musician and angle to angle in a coheisive fashion so that the viewer feels like part of the performance or at least being part of the front row. All parties appear to be enjoying themselves tremendously - which makes viewing the DVD even more fun. If you like Metallica you wont be disappointed and if you're just a casual fan but love music you'll enjoy this one too.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD!.......2007-01-16

I bought this DVD for my boyfriend for Christmas and he asbsolutely loves it! It has fantastic sound quality and it is very impressive to watch the orchestra play in the background. Perfect gift for any Metallica lovers!

I never right reviews about anything I buy, but this DVD is awesome! The quality of the recording is not that great but the show Metallica put on was awesome! If you like the sound track you will like the concert.

Newsted's last great hurrah.

This DVD is a must for any true Metallica fan it rock's from start to finish!!!

4 out of 5 stars Metallica Early On .......2005-08-05

Being a Metallica fan, I did rather enjoy this trinket of Metal Music History. The early 90's proved to be a crucial time for Metallica as documented in this movie. The turning point of Metallica's "Black Album" and the touring that followed helped the band to procure a seat (the number one seat) on the Rock/Metal charts.

Watching the production/recording of the album, the marriage of sonic producer Bob Rock helping out, and a bunch of roudy 20-something world-class rockers is pure entertainment. Their haughty self-importance is hard to take at times (see Lars), but definitely sheer entertainment. The live footage of the band across world venues is worth the price alone. It shows how much of a live band they really are. Also included are their videos from the album, which are nice to have sprinkled into the mix of the movie.

Although this movie is nothing to Some Kind Of Monster (their latest movie), it shows the old Metallica that grew right into the reputation of Alcoholica, women, drugs, touring, rock-n-roll life on the road extraordinaire. It is interesting to see them back then, the organic beginnings of the biggest Metal band of all time. During this movie they are poised to claim that throne, and don't even know it yet.

Very interesting to watch, just don't let your kids watch--not only will they see nudity/etc., they might get some crazy idea of becoming a rockstar.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the definitive Elektra!.......2006-12-01

This is absolutely the best Elektra you can see. Here's why:

Leonie Rysanek is the incarnation of the tragic heroine, with a voice and feeling to match her acting.

Catarina Ligendza is a beautiful, young Chrysothemis who is quite believable. Held prisoner by her sister's desire for revenge, she's tired, and longs for a "normal" life. She wants to become a mother--to live, before she dies.

Although Astrid Varnay will mesmerize you with Clytemnestra's garish looks, her masterful singing and acting are dazzling. Her most evil laughter will not disappoint you.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is, as expected, a fine singing Orest. But his shining yet antique Greek armor adds considerably to the aura of realism. The camera follows his feet, as he stomps up the stairs to powerfully right the wrong with which Elektra has been forced to live for years.

The second disc is a 90 minute documentary on how this opera was produced as a film. It shows the rehearsal sessions with Karl Boehm, and extensive scenes where the film directors interact with the singer/actors. I was impressed by how much the direction improves the final product--attention to just where heads and arms are positioned, and how they coach the performers to be most effective in their acting.

I am so happy that they filmed this as a film production, rather than as a film of a stage production. The close-ups help us meet the characters. They allow us to really watch the interaction between Elektra and Clytemnestra, as the daughter tells the mother just what sacrifice will be required. Their facial expressions would be impossible to see in a stage production, but the camera takes us up close to really get into the scene.

Another example of this is in the dialogue between Elektra and Orest. You will never see a more moving interaction as the camera moves from one to the other. Next, there's a master touch, where Elektra sings, "and yet I was a King's daughter," and she scoops up a handful of straw, and pours it over her head, where it seems to form a sort of crown upon her filthy disheveled hair--a great dramatic touch which reinforces the shock and pathos Orest must feel at seeing the state to which his sister has fallen.

Elektra is one of the most "underappreciated" operas we have. It is good to see it done here so very well. If I could have only a single dvd of Elektra, this would be my choice. I think you'll really feel you've stepped far back in time, and met the real Elektra.

5 out of 5 stars A legendary performance.......2006-09-16

I am not a big fan of opera made into movies, but this DVD is the exception. Everything is perfect. You couldn't have a finer cast, director, conductor, production - you want it, it's all there! I first purchased this ELECTRA on Laserdisc and almost wore it out. My DVD purchse is a back-up. Without hesitation BUY this DVD and go to opera heaven. I do object to what the DVD companies have been doing recently to opera DVD;s. ELECTRA runs only one hour and forty minutes. The whole thing could have easily fit on one disc. They split it onto two discs so they could hike up the price. Talk about greed. This opera should play all the way through without any interruptions. Sour grapes to the disc companies resorting to this practice.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Elektra!.......2006-04-12

After reading a ton of reviews, I decided to buy this dvd presentation of my favorite opera. The sound is much more immediate than the Levine/Nilsson recording (thankfully).\ The orchestra plays this score so well. I enjoyed it as much as Abbado/Marton. Rysaneks singing is better than Marton.
The singers vary from ok (Varnay-a noticeable wobble) to near great (Rysanek-what an amazing high register). At times, she goes high on some of the pitches. The staging and acting were excellent, even knowing it was lip synced.
The only irritating thing was the number of screen shots of the actor that played Agamemnon.
In all, this is well worth the money. In high quality stereo sound and performance.
The extra dvd was quite interesting too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence.......2006-03-21

Very quick turn-around. Order placed, order filled within two days. Amazing. Excellent recording, excellent quality. Seller is very dependable.

5 out of 5 stars I will not watch this often.......2006-01-19

I will not watch this film version of ELEKTRA often: it's too intense, relentless, and depressing, but it is captivating and excellent in every way. Leonie Rysanek, Astrid Varnay and Caterina Ligendza are all first rate, and the range of emotions - usually dark and mentally ill in Elektra (Rysanek)- are wide and varied. The acting, scenery and staging are also excellent, and really serve Strauss's rich, lush score. Music lovers who consider Strauss a conservative in an age when atonality and the Second Vienese School (Schoenberg, Berg, Webern) and Stravinsky were gaining popularity with the public should hear ELEKTRA: there are harsh dissonances galore, and some of the music is too much for me to handle unless I'm in a certain frame of mind. This is worlds away from DER ROSENKAVALIER, or his orchestral works ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA, EIN HELDENLEBEN, or TILL EULENSPIEGEL's MERRY PRANKS.

There is a 2nd disc showing in detail the making of ELEKTRA, Director Gotz Friedrich working with the principal singers, Karl Bohm rehearsing the Vienna Philharmonic for the soundtrack (begun in April, 1981, just 4 months before Bohm's death). This is very fascinating to me, and I am not authority on Richard Strauss or the plot of ELEKTRA. Thankfully there are subtitles in English for non German speakers like me. Bohm appears frail and unsteady on his feet, but he knows Strauss's score inside/out (Bohm and Strauss became close friends about 1935, and were so until Strauss died in 1949; Bohm became a champion conductor of Strauss's music, recording many of his opera and orchestral works.)

Even though I will not watch ELEKTRA often, I am glad to have it. I hope DG will release Bohm's video film of Strauss's SALOME, with Teresa Stratas and Astrid Varnay, equally as intense and relentless as ELEKTRA. SALOME was on laserdisc and VHS formats in the 1992 DG catalog, and hopefully will come out on DVD in the future.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must-have for any fan of The Cure!.......2007-04-20

I was exceptionally pleased with my purchase of The Cure - Greatest Hits DVD. This disc has all of the hit videos from The Cure as well as some Acoustic Recordings that I have not seen on any other set. This is definately something every fan should own!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre DVD..........2006-08-11

They left out several important videos from the Cure's early years:

Killing an Arab
10:15 Saturday Night
Jumping Someone Else's Train
A Forest
Play For Today
Primary
Other Voices
Charlotte Sometimes
The Hanging Garden
A Night Like This

4 out of 5 stars The Cure Greatest Hits - DVD.......2005-04-22

Great DVD, music and all. Interesting to watch Robert Smith morph from his early stages to the present.

The best part of the DVD collection is the Acoustic renditions of the music and I only wish they would have showed all the songs that are in the CD played acoustically on the DVD. Watching them live and listening to this variation on the music is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection!.......2005-01-02

From the age of 12, I have been lulled by the sounds of The Cure. This DVD set gave me a real insight into the mind of Rober Smith & his "motley crew." I had only seen a handful of their videos & this opened a world of creativity I had never known. All the big songs are here & Robert draws you in to see the world the way he sees it. Again, awesome collection.

5 out of 5 stars good but could be better.......2004-11-14

This collection came out to reflect the greatest hits release so I understand that it isnt supose to be a complete video collection. The missing videos besides the hidden one's are some of their greatest videos like charolette sometimes, primary, the hanging garden, the 13th, fascination street, 10:15 on a staurday night, jumping some one elses train, killing an arab. These are all great videos and hopefully some day they will see dvd release. the quality seemed really bad on the transefer to dvd especially on just like heaven where it doesn't seem like they were remastered at all. If only this could of had the same care as on the trilogy dvd. I will still give this 5 stars becuse its the cure and is still enjoyable and thank god it has love cats and the catepillar. I still love it but it leaves much to be desired. Its sad to see the aging of robert smith but it revives the wonderfulness of what the 80's had music wise. If only more kids support cure-like pop. and yes the acoustic set is cool

Description

Cliff 'Em All, Metallica's first video, is a tribute to late original bassist Cliff Burton. James Hetfield describes it as "a compilation of bootleg footage shot by sneaky Metallifux, stuff shot for TV that was never used, but we've held onto, home footage, personal fotos and us drunk. But most important, it's really a look back at the 3-1/2 years that Cliff was with us and includes his best bass solos and the home footage and pix that we feel best capture his unique personality and style." 1987. 90 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Metal Releases (cd or dvd) and the BEST OF METALLICA .......2007-07-02

This is one of my most favorite Metal Releases I own. It's Metallica at their best featuring live footage/versions of songs from their acclaimed intitial trilogy of the true Metallica Sound (Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets). Here, we see the true start of the Metallica Legacy prior to their rise to fame and the 360 they made in their music and style after their success with the black album.

Here, we get a gritty and raw look at the band which is both a tribute to the passing of their original bass player, Cliff Burton, Who died in the band's tragic Tour bus accident and the end of Metallica as a hungry and a very, heavy metallic band.

You'll see here film of the band in early days playing clubs and as openers for the likes of Ozzy. You'll even get to see film of when Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) was there as Metallica's Original Guitarist.

If you want to see and hear Metallica at their very best, get this DVD!!!Next to Bing and Purge, This is the best you'll ever see Metallica to be. (Unlike the mess of the Madonna Truth or Dare Wanna-Be Film Metallica released called SOME KIND OF MONSTER, which could have easily been titled SOME KIND OF MISTAKE--The film that you could say has killed Metallica's credibility as being known as Metal Masters.)...

Thank goodness for Cliff 'Em All....

4 out of 5 stars Pretty cool.......2007-03-01

Its a good Video, Cliff ruled! Best part about it is the footage of Dave Mustaine....The King of Metal!!!

4 out of 5 stars Long Live The Metallica Mobile! .......2006-11-03

I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in '86 at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago and will never forget that they all piled into a beater car they dubbed the "Metallica Mobile" and headed to the local metal radio station in Highland Park for an impromptu interview and phone calls. What set this band completely apart from their competition was how in touch they seemed with their fan base, who were growing increasingly tired of the hairspray, spandex and special effects taking over once decent metal bands. Instead, Metallica seemed much like thier fans themselves. Seeing this video always brings back memories of that concert, for the footage of their opener, "Creeping Death", shows a view that almost appears to have been shot in the exact seat I was sitting in! It also reminds me of how powerful & raw these guys were, as opposed to the horrendous performance by Ozzy, who not only cut his encore because "Jake is sick", but looked like a bloated, Bea Arthur clone with his big hair and glittery Muumuu. Such a disappointment. The Ultimate Sin indeed. And who knew this would be my last chance to see Cliff Burton? He died a month or two later.

This enormously popular video, released two years after Burton died, was watched endlessly by Metal Heads at the time. It may be hard for younger viewers used to such high standards in DVD to adjust to the poor quality contained here. Part of the reasons for this are likely because Metallica was initially fervant opponents to video and any other type of "sell out" publicity. This, of course, made them heroes to their fans, but ultimately presented very difficult business compromises for them further down the road. At any rate, this ethic of theirs - while well-intentioned - turns out to be a real shame in hindsight; there may not be any professionally shot footage of them in their younger days.

What is here is largely fan-shot (i.e., illegally taped initially, but later released officially by the band) with some television stuff from overseas. Some of the earlier club stuff may have been shot by the band's management so the members could critique their own perfomance. The best quality comes from "Day on the Green" in their homebase of Oakland (For Whom the Bell Tolls) which alone makes this worth picking up.

Still, this release obviously hasn't been touched in all its 18 years. I'm sure the sound, for one, could be cleaned up considerably with better source material surely in existence someplace, and some original video masters (esp. of the TV stuff) could be tracked down and spruced up. It would be nice for Metallica to take a lesson from the recent Led Zeppelin & Kiss 2-dvd packages and root through their archives to see what would be suitable for a more comprehensive release. I'd hate to think that this is it for the Cliff Burton era.

5 out of 5 stars He CIiffed Them All.......2006-08-27

Cliff was the soul of Metallica, James the heart, Lars the mind, Kirk it consience. When Cliff died the rare and wonderful creature that was Metallica was left a sad and spiritless thing like some kind of monster. There will never be anything new from Cliff Burton and this video is probably all we'll ever have. If you love music you must own this. Although if youre good when you die Santa might take you to heaven to listen to Cliff jam together with Randy Rhodes. Wheres that razor?

4 out of 5 stars Pretty awesome Metallica DVD... beats some kind of monster.......2006-07-23

I first saw this DVD when my boyfriend brought it over to my house. I loved the concert footage in this dvd, since it was filmed when Metallica was still a thrash band. There is concert footage, some of it shows Cliff doing bass solos. There is also a scene where a women is interviewing the band and asks them about their influences. One scene also is a performance while Dave Mustaine was still in the band. There are some scenes that just show the band drinking and having a good old time. Great dvd, although several scenes dont even have cliff in them. A must have for the diehard Metallica/ Cliff Burton fan!

5 out of 5 stars Staind - It's Been Awhile since I've been so emotionally touched by music........2006-04-24

Over the last few years I've been aware of a band named Staind and I've also recently found over this time I've accumulated a good awareness of Staind music and history. I've grown to find that Staind is not just about depression like some people here mentioned; it's about emotion - strong emotions. Some people express deep emotions that touch at the heart of their souls; Aaron Lewis is sharing his journey through life. I have a deep respect and admiration for this band and their art.

Staind - MTV Unplugged has to be one of my favorite Staind performances on DVD. Check it out, you won't be sorry!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible... just plain horrible!.......2005-09-29

Die-hard fans please ignore...

As a musician I have an appreciation for a very wide range of music so I purchase pretty much every music DVD produced. After checking out Staind's MTV UNPLUGGED DVD all I can say is this band and it's music are just plain horrible.

The theme of every song is either based on anger, depression, lonliness, paranoia or any other thing this guy can whine about.

The show is one long depressing song with the same dull tempo and basic chord changes... if you are into that kind of thing I guess this is the best DVD in the world!

Performance notes:

These guys must be pitch deft, the guitars are either out of tune or they are such bad musicians they can't even play this extremely simple music properly...

The singer has a drony voice and sings off key 80% of the time... if you can actually endure the songs it's hard to believe you can put up with the bad singing.

Let's not forget his great personality between songs... basically "ughh... this next song is I Hate Everybody/Life Sucks/My Parents Are Jerks/Relationships Suck/etc...

DVD notes:

Picture is typical of these MTV shows... nothing to write hone about, but a clear 4:3 transfer with adequate lighting.

Sound of 5.1 track is very processed and hollow sounding... stick with the 2.0 track if you actually want to listen to this garbage...

Look for my copy on eBay!

1 out of 5 stars Warning : this DVD is censored.......2005-04-30

I feel ripped off and am so angry right now. I can not believe the idiotic censorship on this DVD. The word "$hit" is blanked out of the performance of Mudshovel basically ruining it. And to show how idiotic and senseless this censorship is you can see the word spelled out for all the world to see on the subtitles!!! It gives you that same feeling as when you are watching a good R rated movie on TV and its all hacked up with blanked out dialog. There is no disclosure that the video has been hacked in the description by Amazon. Avoid buying MTV products unless you are an 11 year old's mother.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Embarrassing.......2007-03-27

Metallica is great, this product displays them at their near worst. Pandering to the crowd, playing with the lights on for the first few songs, asking if the crowd wants "heavy". Give me a break. Metallica never needed to do anything but go up on stage and crank the stuff out, so why they resorted to these tactics I don't know. Other than they are playing to the cameras, which every band does, but this is a little out of character. I don't understand the glowing reviews here. I frankly feel the audience got shortchanged and didn't experience a true Metalli-show where it's all black, all music, all fist pumping, all the time. And the stupid camera-angle-change feature of my DVD didn't work. More marketing to the masses I suppose.

2 out of 5 stars What a cunning stunt you dudes pulled on us .......2007-01-04

What is WITH you people w the glowing reviews?????

Do you even HAVE a killer sound system?

Do you all play your DVD's through TV speakers??

Do any of you even have headphones worth more than $50?

First off, I am a fan, been to 4 shows over 20 years. I even saw them play off the back of a flat bed truck in the Tower Records parking lot just before the Load tour. It was right after they all cut their hair, it was a trippy site.

Anyway, you can't even turn this thing up all the way without it giving reverb and making the speakers crackle. Its ok about 2/3's up, but you should be able to jam a DVD all the way up and rattle the windows when you want and have the sound be clean and clear. Yes I tried it at a couple other friends houses, with nice stereos, same thing.

Another bone to pick is the camera's are jumping all over with the shots, must be no more than 5 seconds on each member, then to the next, then to the next, over and over and OVER! Somebody start a school up for these guys! It's in so many DVDs!! We don't like that stop it! It's like they think the average fan is 14-17, short attention span.

Fade to black, I love the guitars, not the subject matter, but the guitars on the song, just flat jams, but not here, it just falls flat like the rest of the show. And what really stupid is this is not on S and M DVD with the symphony, that would have been the best song on the DVD! With the violins flying away with the guitars. Flat blew that one dudes. Maybe is wasn't picked for that show because of the lyrics, if so then ok, but if not, then glaring omission.

Lars, sits right in the middle like he is on some throne and has a lot of the lights on him making him stand out, no doubt he has it set up this way, and lots of camera shots of him, no doubt he has this set up this way also, since he is a known control freak. Dude is a good drummer but he isn't no John Bonham or Neil Peart. He thinks everyone is at the show to see him as much as James and Kirk. No Lars, we are not.

And the worst part of this whole DVD is the drums are turned up WAY to high, they actually dominate the show and just about over power the guitars. NO DOUBT LARS has
