A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in what may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story. The Muscles from Brussels plays Frank Dux, the first Westerner ever to win the extreme "whupfest" known as the Kumatai (a long-running, no-holds-barred fighting tournament in Hong Kong). While a bit deficient in the script department (to say the least), this undeniably exciting flick succeeds by letting Van Damme play to his strengths: namely, minimal acting and a lot of impossibly acrobatic splits while kicking people in the head. A guilty-pleasure testosterone blast of the highest order, with a memorable villain (the massive Bolo Yeung from Enter the Dragon), and a multitude of well-choreographed fight scenes. An embarrassed-looking Forest Whitaker cameos as a hapless (and non-kickboxing) cop. --Andrew Wright

This movie is what it's all about, off course, bruce lee was widely known. But this one is trully magnificent... the story is based on a true-story, the movements are very very athletic and beautifull... to make it short...

Bloodsport is my favorite Van Damme movie.......2006-12-07

In the movie Bloodsport, Jean-Claude Van Damme and the other actors do a fantastic job playing their roles. Van Damme became a big celebrity after starring in this film. It's inspiring to see him train and fight. It amazes me on how he's super flexible and is in great condition. The statement Frank's shedoshi said, "It brings mind, body, and spirit together" is the truth. It makes me think to myself, "You can do anything if you put your mind to it."

The sucess and popularity of Bloodsport makes this movie one of Van Damme's very best ever. Bloodsport also marks Van Damme's first role as the main character in a movie. (The previous film he had a role in was "No Retreat No Surrender" in which he played the villain but had a much smaller role). Bloodsport went on to make 3 more sequals, however without Van Damme. This first installment is overall the best, "a true classic", althouh I find certain elements are more appealing in some of the sequals.

The story in Bloodsport is fairly original for its time and the acting is not too bad, even though half the people in this movie seem to barely speak English well (Van Damme included). Now when I say not too bad, I'm coming from the fact that I'm pretty hardcore about cheesy martial art movies - most have baaaaaaaaad acting. The great thing about the story is that it is based on the true events of Frank Dux (played by Van Damme), who was the first Westerner to ever win the kumite and to hold several records. The soudtrack to this movie, I hate to admit for an 80's film, is very nice. I enjoy both the original music composed by Paul Hertzog, and some of the songs, by Survivor I think (same group who performed Eye of the Tiger in Rocky III). I even enojyed the opening credits scene - it sets the tone for the movie wonderfully.

The real meat and potatoes of Bloodsport, of course is the tournament. There are plenty of fights, many very short, and some that don't look very realistic. Not many fancy moves, but its always a treat to see Bolo Yeung as the villain, "Chong Li", on the platform. The final fight between Dux and Chong Li lasts about 7 minutes, but a lot of it is in slow motion with some of those "now somewhat cheesy flashbacks" to early training scenes. The end of the fight showcases Van Damme's leaping spinning split kicks that quickly became his signature move and can be seen in more of his following films including Kickboxer and Double Impact. If you wanna see another fight between Van Damme and Bolo Yeung, be sure to check out Double Impact.

this dvd is the best ecw dvd ever! looking at the back is hard. bloody pictures and violence. the only down side to me is only one Rob Van Dam match.

The best matches are Taipei Death match which is rotten bros fighting. Taipei is when you glue glass to ur fist and hit ur oppenents.

For shame WWE, for shame TNA, for shame all of them. Watching this DVD put all those franchises to shame, no offense to their talent. WWE has been going downhill recently, and this DVD makes it plainly obvious through blood and violence.

Introducing each match in his own colorful way is Paul Heyman, mastermind and leader of ECW during its heyday

The matches are all this incredible display of violence, tolerance, high flying moves, street-brawling, technical wrestling, even the intense athletics of luchadores and the beer, blood, and cigarettes of the Sandman, this DVD features 19 of the absolute best wrestling matches I have ever see and it's tragic that I most likely will not see many more like these ever again in the future.

Rather than recount all the matches like everyone else, I'll only recount my favorite ones:

Mexican Death Match: Rey Mysterio Vs. Psicosis
Sick of blood? This is a spellbinding, bloodless match which sees these two luchadores pulling off astounding athletics, heavily technical wrestling and high flying. The fighting moves up the ramp and a steel chair is used for Rey Mysterio to hurricanrana Psicosis from atop the ramp down onto the crowd area below. You're literally hanging off your seat as Mysterio is dangling between standing and lying as the referee counts to 10, and has just barely passed nine when Mysterio starts to stand up. A spectacular match which showcases the best of bloodless ECW

Stretcher Match: Rob Van Dam Vs. Sabu
Any match with Sabu and RVD is bound to be a spectacle. In order to win this match, a man had to be carried away on a stretcher out of the ring and into the locker room. These two pull off their best stunts, and there are plenty of laugh-worthy moments, especially towards the end with Sabu being carried away outside of the ring, RVD leaping off the turnbuckle only to hit bare stretcher as Sabu rolls off the stretcher, and the team starts carrying RVD away! Sabu's win

Three Way Dance for #1 Contendership of ECW Title followed by ECW Title match: Sandman Vs. Stevie Richards Vs. Terry Funk
Commentated over by Joey Styles and Tommy Dreamer (rooting for Terry Funk), these three are amazing with their brawls and straight wrestling style. I had a blast as Sandman whipped out a ladder and tossed it into the ring---right on Stevie Richards' head as he was on top of Terry Funk! After Richards' is eliminated, Sandman and Funk shake hands and go at each other. Weapons make their obvious appearance, including barbed wire, and Terry Funk wins the match, barely able to stand.

At that moment, the champion Raven comes out and begins their match immediately
ECW Championship: Raven Vs. Terry Funk
Terry Funk is barely able to stand and covered in blood when Raven starts on him. At first this seems to be an utter squash match, but Terry is proving resilient, and with the crowd almost screaming for Tommy Dreamer to help him (he had previously promised Terry he wouldn't interfere). Finally Tommy gets up to the roaring cheers of the audience, until one of the Dudley boys (not Buh Buh Ray or D-von or Spike---one of the others) comes out and attacks him. Dreamer recovers and makes it to the ring, brutalizing Raven, and Funk amazingly wins the match and the title! You can't help but at least feel slightly emotional as Funk is crowned ECW champion for the first time.

Barbed Wire Match: Terry Funk Vs. Sabu
An absolute classic. This was the last barbed wire match ever done in ECW, but after this one, who needs another? Plenty of thrills in the beginning watching these two beat at each other while trying to avoid the barbed wire surrounding the ring which had replaced the ropes, until Funk drops Sabu on his crotch directly onto the wire. Such a bloody match with so much wire that paramedics feared to touch the wire wrapped around Funk's neck, thinking his neck would be lacerated and he'd bleed to death.

Chicago Street Fight: The Dudley Boyz Vs. Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley
I was kind of disappointed at the blatantly obvious blading (wrestling term for cutting your forehead so you'll look like you're bleeding from a hit) by Buh Buh Ray when he supposedly had his forehead grated with a cheese grater, but we all know why he fell out of the ring and went under the apron. The violence of this match is astounding, and scenes like Spike Dudley leaping from one story off onto all three other men outside of the ring is only surpassed by the finishing touch---a powerbomb by the Dudleys on Balls Mahoney, through a table covered in thumbtacks and lit on fire!

ECW Championship: Mike Awesome Vs. Spike Dudley
Mike Awesome is almost 300 pounds and six and a half feet tall. Spike Dudley is a full foot shorter, and at best, half that weight. Now picture the two fighting, with several tables set up outside of the ring, and Mike Awesome's specialty is putting people through tables. Despite being put through tables countless times (at least 5 or 6 times), Spike Dudley manages to fight back effectively, and we get an amazing match that is far from the typical WWE squash match (wrestling term for a match that ends quickly with one man dominating the other easily)

ECW One Night Stand 2005: Mike Awesome Vs. Masato Tanaka
I've never heard of Masato Tanaka; he's nowhere in any of the matches on this DVD or on Rise and Fall of ECW. I knew nothing of Mike Awesome save for the few matches I've seen him in and his segment in Rise and Fall of ECW. Joey Styles has some very harsh words about him in the commentary for this match. While superstars from Raw and Smackdown (led apparently by JBL) watch from the rafters, Awesome and Tanaka put on possibly the best match of 2005 I've ever seen. Chair shots to the head are all real and plenty of tables are broken by the duo. So much violence, high flying, technical wrestling, and ECW style brawling leads the whole crowd to literally chant "THIS MATCH RULES! THIS MATCH RULES! THIS MATCH RULES! THIS MATCH RULES!" An excellent wind-up to this disc, with the most recent ECW match since the DVD was produced (in 2005).

With ECW gone, all we're left with is gems like this. Where else can you see a man suplex a table onto another man, as opposed to the other way around? This was the best wrestling DVD I've ever bought and I only regret that I paid so little for it.

I liked this dvd. Anything with Tazz in ECW is cool. However Beulah vs Bill alfonzo is a joke. I liked it. If you are an ECW fan you will love it. It shows what ECW is really about not like the new Tuesday Night Raw, cough cough, WWE ECW Brand.

I already knew before ordering this that I liked both of these films, but was curious as to the versions included on this Double Feature DVD. Turns out they're not bad, but could have been a little better.

Showdown In Little Tokyo is a ridiculous romp through early 90's Action/Martial Arts cheese-sploitation that does more than just entertain despite its visible flaws. It acknowledges its own shortcomings with a sly wink and nod. Owning up to the schlocky context from the get go makes it much easier to take things like Dolph Lundgren's wooden delivery and uneven on-screen persona. Brandon Lee was no acting champ either. Luckily there's not a ton of meaningful conversation or verbal exposition here. After the opening and set-up, the fighting and shooting begins. All of this is punctuated by dialog that's certainly snappy on paper, but sometimes gets lost in 'translation' (meaning Dolph to English).

Tia Carrere AND her body double both look fantastic here. Which reminds me of another positive aspect to the film. It's a real R rated movie, which means naked girls, open drug abuse by criminal elements, blood during fights, etc... In my personal opinion those things almost always make a movie better. Finally, the picture quality is decent but the film is presented in Full Screen format which is a slight bummer. Overall I have to give this one 3/5 stars considering that it's Full Screen and has no special features included. It's the perfect movie for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when you have nothing to do for 75 minutes and want to turn your brain off.

Bloodsport, while being an Amercian Martial Arts cult classic, is a cut above most films that claim that status. One of the benefits you'll get from watching this after Showdown In Little Tokyo is that Jean Claude Van Damme's (henceforth referred to as JCVD) lines don't sound so silly for the first minute or two. For some reason though, as the story progresses, JCVD's character Frank Dux (prounouced 'Dukes') gets better and better at delivering believable and nuanced dialog. Again here though, not much time is spent on long conversations or verbal interactions. Things are communicated by pulverizing bricks, primal screaming while flexing every muscle in the body and/or backspin kicking people in the face... repeatedly. BUT I would be remiss if I didn't point out the admirable acting performances by Forest Whittaker and Norman Burton as the two Army Officers charged with finding Frank Dux and returning him to the Army. Whittaker especially seizes on his role with gusto, adding depth and real meaningfulness to his scenes.

Not only is the set-up for the story nicely handled, it provides for a compelling climax that remains exciting despite its predictability. Even some of the more dated aspects like the music and the fashion manage to seem like fond reminders of the time when I first saw Bloodsport. Additionally, this transfer is 16x9 1.85:1, and looks fantastic! Opening credits are a bit crackly, but after that the picture is sparkling and crisp. Great job on that and the sound. Theatrical trailer and Cast/Crew details are included as extras.

Overall this is a great Double Feature package for fans of Martial Arts Action films from the late 80's/early 90's. Showdown In Little Tokyo is a 3 1/2 Star movie with an OK presentation here. Bloodsport is a 4 Star movie with a 4 Star presentation.

The first Bloodsport will always be the best of the series, and probably remains as one of the best martial art movies of all time. Bloodsport 2 does not have the classic feel that Bloodsport has, nor does Daniel Bernhardt fill Van Damme's shoes, and the villain Demon (played by Ong Soon Han) does not come close to the on-screen presence of Bolo Yeung. What Bloodsport 2 does have over the original is the best tournament you will ever see in a movie. For a good 30 minutes throughout the film, you get some of the best choreography ever done, well editing and camera angles, and long fights that are just enjoyable to watch and appreciate. The story to Bloodsport 2 is nothing to write home about, but as far as fights, the beginning to the end of his film has nothing but continuous fights (both in and out of the tournament). The final fight between Alex (Bernhardt) and Ong Soon Han is actually pretty good, maybe better than Van Damme and Chong Li in the first Bloodsport.

If you are looking for a good all around movie in the Bloodsport series, look towards the first Bloodsport. If you don't care about story and famous actors and just want really good fights, Bloodsport 2 is the best in the series. Check out Bloodsport 3 too - its pretty lame throughout but the tournament is pretty dang good too. As for Bloodsport 4, ouch.

Blood Sport Rules!!!!!.......2006-03-13

Let's face it, TBS won't even show this. We've all seen Blood Sport 30 times on TBS, and it's good. Now, I've never seen this movie, but looking at the cover, it sucks. There's no action on the cover. Van Damme made one good movie, and blood sport was it. Now Daniel Bernhardt tries to jump on and ruins everything. It's like watching The Karate Kid III, after Ralphie grew up. Don't read the reviews for this. Look at the cover and hit yourself. Continue hitting yourself until you realize you were about to make a horrible mistake. You'd be better spending your money on Howard the Duck.

I'm not gay but Yeah, the plot was okay. However, Daniel Bernhardt was far too lanky and his upper thighs were very weak especially for his long legs. He can't keep his legs up in the air very long.

FURTHER, his chest muscles hardly rippled. They were big chest muscles, but he never flexed them (if he could).

Decent Sequel to Blood Sport........2001-09-14

When I got this out I wasn't expecting much at all. But I was pleasantly surprised at what I got. It is well structured film (like a real 80's style with a distinct beginning, middle and end not like crappy shallow 90's films which just meander along and feel really empty) Daniel Bernhardt is really charming, a good fighter and looks strikingly similar to Van Damme in some shots. It has one of the best chessy training scenes like the one in kickboxer. The fight scenes are well edited and well shot, so they are easy to watch and not to close-up. For fans of 80's cheese (even if this is a 90's film) and lots of mano a mano fight scenes this should fit nicely in your collection.

Why???? Why must sequals always be so bad, especially when you get to something like a #4 in a series. There is nothing good about Bloodsport 4 except the couple of fights. The acting is so bad that its hard to enjoy this. High school students could act this one out much better. What's with Daniel Bernhardt? He's not playing Alex Cardo anymore but a cop named John Keller. Apparently, Keller's character calls for bad acting because Bernhardt sure provides it. He did so much better as Alex in Bloodsport's 2 & 3. But in Bloodsport 4, everyone else still can't act 1/2 as good as Bernhardt in the movie. Yep, its that bad.

Ok, so the acting stinks. The story does too. There is no in depth to this movie at all, no surprise, no twists, nothing. The only thing that gets 2 stars for this movie is the fights. There are several, actually pretty decent. Compared to the first 3 Bloodsports, the kumite is dissapointing. After 30 minutes of fights in the first Bloodsports, filled with lots of fighters with tons of techniques and styles, Bloodsport 4's kumite is a let down. To be honest, its not even a real kumite. Compared to some movies, they are good fights, don't get me wrong, but again compared to the first 3 Bloodsport movies, its a let down. The villain is one of the only cool character in the movie, played by Stefanos Miltsakakis (who also appeared as a fighter in Best of The Best 2 and in a few Van Damme movies). The other decent guy is a semi-villain fighter, played by David Rowe (an extremely cut fighter). Keller and Schrek (Miltsakakis) get the final fight in the kumite,which lasts for only a few moments.

The fights is all this is honestly good for. I'll still watch Bloodsport 4...when I get tired of watching the 100 other martial arts movies I own.

LET ME BORROW YOUR PEN.......2005-09-10

The frivolous use of writing instruments is the only original idea in this tired kung fooey saga. Although physically imposing, Daniel Bernhardt's acting range is that of a rutabaga, and even though the fight scenes are reasonably well choreographed, they are not enough to overcome the basic lucidcrous plot. The other actors in the film are lifeless and dull; the movie's thin plot has been done in hundreds of karate classics, so there's little to recommend this film; I give two stars for its sheer existence.

Worse than death itself!!!.......2005-03-01

Wow. This movie sucked the big one. But before we get into the gritty details, a quick plot summary. Daniel Berndhart, a washed out bum of an actor, stars as a mildly retarded former fighting champion scouring the strees of America (which look mysteriously Russian) for an escaped prisoner, Shrek. Danny ends up in jail himself as an undercover agent, who then is launched into a plotless chase after a crime syndicate. I couldn't tell you any more if I wanted to, there is no story!
This hunk of sweaty turd ruined two hours of my life. This is honestly the worst movie I have ever seen crawl out of a toilet and onto my TV screen. It is simply horrible.
To begin with, the plot seems to develop naturally for the first ten minutes, until Daniel Berndhart decides to shoot two of his fellow policemen for no apparent reason. Quickly followed by a demented scene involving a riduculous closeup on the face of a chubby courtmaster, I suddenly knew how terribly low budget this Russian horror flick was going to progress.
The director's idea of a special effect was zooming in way to close for comfort on the actors and making nasty noises. For example, after the prison warden speaks with a crime boss, his nervousness is expressed through fogging up the camera lens with his panting gasps. Besides just special effects, the horrendously low budget showed itself through the fact that every scene occured in one building that looked strikingly familiar to the Kremlin. The police station, prision office, and gangster's hideout, all have short clips showing the aforementioned before cutting to the action.
Now to the actors themselves. The only redeeming quality of this cast is the coincendence that one of them looked exactly like Benjamin Franklin (the gangster). However, he had some distinctly un-colonial personality traits, such as his fetish for positioning 20 scantily clad women around his throne, all of whom seemed to serve no purpouse beyond decoration.
Lets move on to the unique wardrobe feautured in the film. Costumes ranged from victorian era dress suits to 1920s striped jail uniforms to industrial era clothing reminiscent of Oliver Twist. As a bonus, the prison guards dressed like members of the Gestappo and travelled in packs to boot. Most suprising of all is the fight uniform of one of the "kumite" (which never really happens) participants, a speedo swim suit.
Before closing, I would like to point out how random and worthless the majority of the scenes were. There are to many to include, but my personal favorite was when two gypsies performed before Ben Franklin for 5 minutes, adding nothing to the plot but more senslessness. This makes "Jaws III" look like a classic. Simply stated, I cant evin express the pain watching this movie put me through, I would rather gouge out my eyes with a rusty grapefruit spoon than watch it again. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! UGH....

SUDDENLY, HIS COVER IS BLOWN AND HE FINDS HIMSELF FIGHTING TO SURVIVE IN THE KUMITE. THIS MOVIE IS SO BORING. THE ACTING IS BAD, THE FIGHTS ARE CORNY, AND THE SCRIPT REALLY SUCKS. VAN DAMME LOOKALIKE DANIEL BERNHARDT IS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A MARTIAL ARTIST THAT KNOWS HOW TO FIGHT, BUT SERIOUSLY HAS PROBLEMS ENTERTAINING AN AUDIENCE. ...I am going to admit, this movie is not the best martial arts movie around, but I am still going to give credits for the great series that is Bloodsport. This movie aint no Bloodsport 1, or 2, but it does give a small dose of suspense. When I first watched this movie, I could of never predicted what was going to happen to Seheck (if thats how his name is pronounced). I don't know much about the directors of this film, but I don't agree on most of the things that has happened. This movie is basically about a convict who was "Executed" for murder some time ago (Seheck), and was mysteriously released from prison without the approval of authorities. Undercover agent, a martial arts expert, Keller, goes undercover as a convict to try and solve the mysteries occurance of this fiasco, and a mysterious deaths of other convicts. The warden is suspicious about Keller being undercover, and begins to toy with him around a bit, even up to sending an undercover chick to try to get the words out of his mouth, but still no luck.... until the fight....
Keller (shortly after his religious rival) is due to execution by orders of the law, and send to injection. But then Keller wakes up to a surprise, finding out he has one chance of freedom..., to win the savage martial arts battle, the kumite.
Now, this is my favorite part of the whole movie, even though there isn't much to say about it because the fights don't last as much, but like I said, the ending has a hard turnpoint. I have to give some credit to the way they made the bad guy (seheck), because he isn't one of those bad guys who you would hear whinning, or complaining, but is serious as it can be. I am also flattered that he is a Judoka (master of judos) which makes it alot more interesting, and isn't as typical as other martial arts movies (which don't use judos). Overall, I say this movie is okay, but could of been longer, and more approval. So I say if you like Martial Arts movies, buy Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite - it's worth watching two to three times.

Great Video For Learning about Gladiators.......2006-11-22

As a high school teacher, I found that this video passes the basic test of an 'educational' video--it informs and entertains. My freshmen enjoyed it and stayed focused. The information is accurate and presented in an interesting and coherent manner. Good use is made of Hollywood archival footage as well as live shots from a school in northern Italy devoted to recreating the lives of gladiators down to the smallest detail. Backed by concise background information on the Roman Republic and Empire. It would also be of interest to anyone with an interest in the Roman Empire, and good background for such Hollywood films as Spartacus and Gladiator. Recommended. 4 and a half stars.

To Endure Being Burned, Bound, Beaten And Slain By The Sword.......2005-11-08

That was the notorious oath of the gladiator. Documentaries such as this offering always provide such a mind-opening window into a subject of acquired taste, they're severely valuable. As a matter of fact, programs like this, and also its like-minded brethren, continually air on the Discovery network of monopolized channels up to this late day, eliminating any reason to still buy this dvd and/or vhs.

Firstly, the unqualified and skewed perspective of the purported Amazon.com reviewer's editorial is plainly incorrect, and needs to be righted. The original roots of Gladiatorism actually stem from Etruscan origins, directly contrary to Amazon.com's self-righteous reviewer's, disrespectable and disappointing claim of it coming from "casual attractions in town squares". The Etruscans, whose name is derived from the ancient geographical region of Etruria, produced the same-named people who would be the forefathers, and then stewards of all things Roman, seeing as how at the start of their civilization, Romans stole excessive aspects of Etrurian life, after deposing of them by the catalyst for their revolution, which was the murder of Lucretia. But, with my additional, free-of-charge information, I've digressed. At the funeral of some important, societal figure in Etruscan life, the Etruscans would perversely stage sadistic "gladiatorial" games--consisting of only 2 participants at the gladiatorial concept's infancy--in their bloodthirsty distortion of values, which was common in the ancient world. This was done to allegedly "celebrate" the accomplishments of the deceased; i.e. that meant that the more blood that was shed at these games for that deceased person, the more honor was being done to his life.

There's a particularly telling part in this program, one that specifically uses the archaeological evidence of skeletons found in definitively curious positions to establish just one of the many rattling and arcane innuendos surrounding the gladiator. That being, that there apparently was the body of a harshly wealthy noblewoman found--thanks to the preservative pumice of Vesuvius--being shielded under the arm of a preserved gladiator, inside the gladiators' quarters, surrounded by as much as up to 18 gladiators, inside of the building in Pompeii that would serve as their training grounds/housing. Speculation is the one avenue left for one to determine her exact purpose in that suspiciously scandalous association. Reason being, for said scandal, is that in the Roman world, gladiators had a specially stigmatizing libel hung on to them, called infamy. This dictated that in society, they were spat on and outcast as the lowest of the lowest scourges, represented in how they didn't even have citizen status, wherein they couldn't even vote, one of their many disenfranchisements. However, this notoriety had excessive and really unequal perks, as an unfair side effect of how they were labeled as "forbidden". In layman's terms, they were homicidally embellished to "sex god" status, and their sweat was in fact errantly considered as an aphrodisiacal substance. This was the contention of the woman's presence, that the program makes, for her being exclusively interred in the quarters of 18 robust men.

Another disturbing facet of information is the decidedly bloodlusting rage that all Romans, from all walks of Roman life (which, realistically, included only 2 definite divisions: 5% rich, the crushing rest of the populus 95% ghoulishly impoverished) barbarically lusted for. This was the brutal relentlessness of the frequency with which that the fated Death Matches were put on, and also the genocidally beastly number of the casualties. Since in Ancient Rome every other day was a state-oppressed "holiday", this half of the time in the year was unscrupulously misused to stage the most sensationalistic, propaganda-based games, whose exclusive, planned function was to, cunningly, dupe the masses of Rome into feeling "alleviated" of their everyday worries. Worries that stemmed from living in a conclusively brutal ancient world where people's life expectancy was seriously low, and, adding insult to injury, where the majority were living in the poorest of squalor. This was the callous and unrighteous irony of what the morally twisted early civilizations misappropriated to feel better about themselves: to simply punish worse atrocities on others.

These are only some of the exorbitant, educational enlightenments that this hour-long window into this subject offers. These programs that are produced, from the Discovery monopoly of like channels all taken over by one managing group, are so vibrant and lush that they bring alive the theme being documented.

Very Irritating Flickering Scenes.......2002-05-29

This is the WORST DVD I ever bought technically! The movie excerpts are from clippings from old films and the clarity is beyond recognition. I find the excerpts very irritating. They were a lot of flickering (as if you are watching a movie or television show using an old television set or your set back to the 1950's when the frame of the TV screen keeps on flickering continuously until the screen stabilizes). The running time is actually more or less an hour and not 90 minutes as advertised. The special features are not really special anymore because they were just repeats of the main feature. You will realize that you will watching the same scenes a couple of times. Some scenes are shown more than five times just to stretch the time. Do not waste your money with this DVD. I wasted mine! This is not a DVD quality. The quality of the silent movies are much better!

The grim reality behind the Hollywood spectacle.......2001-05-03

I thought this video was an excellent documentary, which should be viewed alongside the recent Academy Award winning movie. This documentary helps one really understand the times portrayed in the movie. I thorougly recommend this video.

Just the facts , please.......2001-04-30

While I found this DVD to be very well produce as far as special effects are concerned, I aslo found several of the statements made by the narrator to be suspect at best. For instance the narrator states that corporations owned most of the chariots used in the Circus Maximus to race. I have read quite a lot about the Roman Empire and nowhere have I ever read any information which stated the existence of any corporations in ancient Rome. I also found the weapons which the actors used in the reenactments to be very cheesy indeed. The swords looked like they were cut out sheet metal to look like swords. They had no edge on the blades at all. The narrator (David Hemmings) was also very hard to understand at times due to the raspy quality of his voice. I think the choice of narrator was a mistake. On the postive side the documentary made good use of the facts about gladiators which has been uncovered by the archaelogical finds at Pompei and had several experts providing information through out the DVD.

Following the previous 2 all-around excellent Bloodsports, part 3 is a sad disappointment in terms of any excitement until the last 30 minutes of the film, where it all makes up for it with some of the best fights ever.

Bloodsport 3 has a few returning characters from the 2nd film, including the main character, Alex Cardo (Daniel Bernhardt). The other 2 returns, Lueng (Pat Morita) and Master Sun (James Hong), have maybe 2 minutes of screen time combined. Bloodsport 3 does get a new charcater, Mr. Devalle played by John Rhys Davies - Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings movie, who has decent acting talent. Mr. Devalle is the center of the story, encouraging Alex to fight in his tournament so that Devalle can place a successful bet on him. Refusing to enter the kumite, Devalle murders Master Sun so that Alex will change his mind, but he still refuses. Devalle enters a new competitor, The Beast, in hopes that he will prevail. After extensive training, Alex surprsingly enters the kumite to avenge his master and defeat The Beast.

Unfortunately, the story is boring and been done a hundred times, but fortunately it doesn't matter once the kumite begins. The kumite literally lasts for the last 3o minutes of the movie straight, with fight after fight of beautiful choreography and great editing. The Beast is definetly a great villain in the kumite, but unlike Chong Li and The Demon in the previous Bloodsports, he only has 3 fights in the entire kumite. His 3rd fight is against Alex, which lasts a good 4-1/2 minutes and is the best fight in the movie. I actually liked it a lot more than Alex's fight against Demon in the previous Bloodsport.

Bloodsport 3's only bright spot is the fights, which are not disappointing at all. The first hour of this movie is all around bad, but buying this movie for the kumite alone is still well well worth it.

I'm not gay but Yeah, the plot was okay. However, Daniel Bernhardt was far too lanky and his upper thighs were very weak especially for his long legs. He can't keep his legs up in the air very long.

FURTHER, his chest muscles hardly rippled. They were big chest muscles, but he never flexed them (if he could).
