Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
The curiosity of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown is Robert Forster's worldly wise bail bondsman Max Cherry, the most alive character in this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch. The Academy Awards saw it the same way, giving Forster the film's only nomination. The film is more "rum" than "punch" and will certainly disappoint those who are looking for Tarantino's trademark style. This movie is a slow, decaffeinated story of six characters glued to a half million dollars brought illegally into the country. The money belongs to Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson), a gunrunner just bright enough to control his universe and do his own dirty work. His just-paroled friend--a loose term with Ordell--Louis (Robert De Niro) is just taking up space and could be interested in the money. However, his loyalties are in question between his old partner and Ordell's doped-up girl (Bridget Fonda). Certainly Fed Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) wants to arrest Ordell with the illegal money. The key is the title character, a late-40s-ish flight attendant (Pam Grier) who can pull her own weight and soon has both sides believing she's working for them. The end result is rarely in doubt, and what is left is two hours of Tarantino's expert dialogue as he moves his characters around town.

Tarantino changed the race of Jackie and Ordell, a move that means little except that it allows Tarantino to heap on black culture and language, something he has a gift and passion for. He said this film is for an older audience although the language and drug use may put them off. The film is not a salute to Grier's blaxploitation films beyond the musical score. Unexpectedly the most fascinating scenes are between Grier and Forster: two neo-stars glowing in the limelight of their first major Hollywood film after decades of work. --Doug Thomas

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.

Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

5 out of 5 stars a must for every girl, young or old...........2007-07-04

I'll tell ya, I don't think that there's a girl alive who can't find some way to relate to Anne Shirley. I recall watching this on WonderWorks as a little girl, and absolutely loved it (and the Anne of Avonlee episodes, which I don't yet own). At one point I had them all on VHS that we'd recorded, but I believe one of my sisters took them when they left home, and I only just got around to buying myself a copy on DVD. And I'm so glad I did, because now I'm sharing my love of this story with MY 9 year old daughter. How special it is to be able to share something one loved as a little girl, with a little girl of one's own, and each able to relate to the story.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a daughter--she NEEDS this DVD!.......2007-06-13

I grew up watching this movie, and read all of L.M. Montgomery's books, and now as an adult I wonder, "What happened to stuff like Anne of Green Gables?" Kids these days, especially girls, don't seem to have any wholesome entertainment that doesn't focus on becoming rich and famous or having the perfect body. If you have a daughter, or a niece, or you yourself just want a nice wholesome movie for a change... buy this movie, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-06-12

I watched this when I was little. Very nice, clean movie that keeps you very involved with the characters. Would recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The Cutest of Movies.......2007-06-10

This movie is so wonderful I love the characters they picked to play each of the characters. This is the best movie out of the trilogy the sequel being the second best because both follow the book. This movie had all of my family in tears at certain points and Gilbert Blithe was a definite favorite for us. The scenery is breathtaking and the way the love story plays out is very cute. I would highly recommend this movie as it is a very enrapturing movie filled with the simple, beautiful things in life. And how Anne " with an E " touches the hearts of so many people is so beautiful. It made me want to move to Prince Edward Island tomorrow to live somewhere like Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables has become one of my favorite movies as it sings to the heart of the hopeless romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2007-06-07

This is one of the best adaptations I have ever seen. Sullivan does a great job of bring Avonlea to the screen and making smart choices about what needs to be changed while remaining true to the world Montgomery created.

The casting is perfect - major and minor characters alike are extremely talented. It's amazing to see how Megan Follows plays a 13 year old and a 16 year old, sometimes days apart, and is believable every time. Richard Farnesworth and Colleen Dewherst are magic.

The bonus features are also great - giving you the impression that getting this adaptation so perfect was more luck than craft on Sullivan's part (a perspective proven later when he destroys this "trilogy" with the joke that is The Continuing Story"), but provides an interesting commentary and details fans will really enjoy.

Everything about this film - the cast, the script, locations, costumes - works together. This is the Avonlea Anne fans have long loved.

Twenty-two early episodes of the breakthrough television series, Cagney & Lacey, are gathered in this Season 1 pack, though these do not include those with early Cagneys Loretta Swit and Meg Foster. Directed by Karen Arthur, written by a female team, and starring two filmic heroes of the feminist movement--Sharon Gless as Christine Cagney and Tyne Daly as Mary-Beth Lacey--the show pioneered on-screen presentation of independent, working women. With Cagney as the career-minded single woman, and Lacey as the mother/wife juggling job with home time, the two detectives serve as foil characters, the way other cop shows such as ChiPs, Moonlighting, or Charlie's Angels starred police with opposing opinions. But where other shows cast the foxiest people possible, Cagney & Lacey relied on character development instead of sex.

That is not to say that Gless and Daly aren't attractive, for indeed they are. Episodic narratives include Cagney & Lacey fighting female spousal abuse in "A Cry For Help"; date rape in "Date Rape"; racism in "Let Them Eat Pretzels," and many other issues targeted in the consciousness-raising feminist movement of the '70s and '80s. Many of the episodes, compared to the lightning fast-paced cop shows airing today, are slow and surprisingly non-humorous. But regardless of the show's occasional descent into tedium, Cagney & Lacey did much to promote the image of the self-made, multitasking woman. The two-part featurette, "Breaking the Laws of TV," starring heavyweights such as Gloria Steinem, critically places the show in TV history by contextualizing what was happening in the women's movement concurrent to the show's airing. Though the show may have its dull moments, it is fascinating to remember how television has changed over the decades. —Trinie Dalton

Description

A ground-breaking show that re-defined its genre, Cagney and Lacey was something entirely new: a cop show featuring two strong and intelligent female detectives, with real lives and real problems--ordinary women doing extraordinary jobs. Now recognized as a true classic, this remarkable show tackles poignant social issues and explores the human side of hard-boiled detective work. Starring Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as one of the most compelling detective duos of all time, this Emmy Award-winning drama is landmark television at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars About Time!.......2007-07-03

This has been a long time coming and worth the wait. This show was one of the best ever. They dealt with important issues in our society with care.

1 out of 5 stars Quality is Sadly Lacking.......2007-07-02

After receiving a ton of other DVDs of old TV shows, I came to expect a certain "collectible quality" to the discs and packaging. This set is sadly lacking in both areas.

It contains two plain silver discs in cheap dollar-store plastic holders. Both outer cases have the same photo and information on the front. Nothing distinguishes case one from case two. Only the backside is different.

The picture quality has much to be desired. There's a grainy effect, slightly reminiscent of DVDs that Walmart sells for $1. And since they didn't put any money into packaging, the least they could do is give me four DVDs instead of two double-sided DVDs per case.

It doesn't get much cheaper than this, folks. $25.99 for this pile of garbage. Even the thrill of watching Cagney and Lacey again hasn't soothed the feeling of being cheated. I will be very leery of purchasing collector DVD sets in the future.

I'm really surprised that other reviewers haven't taken issue with the poor quality. Being happy to see C&L again shouldn't overshadow the fact that this set is an embarrassment. I'm too ashamed to admit to anybody what I paid for it.

If you care about quality you may be highly disappointed and disgusted with these DVDs. Proceed at your own risk. All I can do is warn you and share my experience.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Horrible.......2007-06-29

Fantastic: As an avid C&L fan, I was excited by this DVD release. This DVD set was no disappointment. I loved watching the episodes again even though I have seen them many times. The DVD quality is very good. I was taken aback by how good the story lines were. It was like I was watching them for the first time. Horrible: One season is not enough! I am addicted again and want more. I would PAY to get the remainder of the 125 episodes and the reunion movies from 1994 & 1995 on DVD. In summary, this DVD set is a MUST HAVE for any C&L fan!

5 out of 5 stars Back from the past........2007-06-27

If you were a Cagney and Lacey fan then you have probably forgotten the shows, so this is like seeing them all over again for the first time. The tough as nails Cagney and the warm, caring Lacey. It was fun seeing them again.

5 out of 5 stars Cagney and Lacey Season 1.......2007-06-27

I think this set is great! I loved the TV show, I used to tape it on Lifetime years ago, when I worked and it was on during the day. I really hope they come out with the rest of the seasons as well. I enjoyed it when they got more involved in the characters life outside of work in the later seasons. More home life, Lacey buying a house, Cagney's alcoholism, and relationship with her father & boyfriends. None of that is in this set, this is truely the beginning. Pretty straight forward police work, some of Lacey, Harvey and the kids, but not much, and it shows the women's interaction with other officers on the force. I like Sharon Gless as the only Cagney in this set. I could not warm up to the other woman who played the character in the first few episodes, I am glad she is not included. Good clean entertainment, not a lot of violence, no gore or bad language. It shows police woman trying to have a career and a private life. Tyne Daly is great as always. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the series in the 1980's!

5 out of 5 stars Best TV Show ever.......2007-05-17

Easily the best tv show ever, every episode is a delight.
I dont mind if some dont like it, but some of the reviews of this by so called fans are nothing short of insane....maybe these people cant recognise quality...let them go and watch Big Brother and find their IQ level there.

Great series, great main actors, great characters...everything is just right...cant wait to get every season on dvd...considering the 8th season is so short...why cant we have season 7 and 8 in one package?!

2 out of 5 stars Not Magnum at its finest hour, but necessary for the collection.......2007-05-15

Beginning with Season Five, the writers of Magnum P.I. began to tinker with the shows format. Something not out of the ordinary when a show reaches beyond the four season mark. While most of season five's episodes work with this new formula, season six tries to continue with this formula, but instead misses the boat more times than not. Gone are the days of Magnum swimming on the beach or hanging out at the club to meet a client. Higgins no longer bargains with Magnum for guest house privlidges, and their customary banter only happens occassionally. This was done perhaps, the emphasize the fact that Magnum was getting older, and several episodes stress the fact that he may soon want to do something else with his life. Even though Magnum is quick to point out how great Hawaii is, one can get the impression at times that he's searching for something with a little more meaning.

Overall, the tone of the season is darker and much more serious. Come to think of it, most episodes of season six are shot entirely out of Hawaii (Deja Vu, Going Home), and several episodes go by where you see no trace of the guest house or estate for that matter. Episodes like the previous two mentioned and "The Way of the Stalking Horse," are some of the year's bright spots. I give the writer's credit for trying to branch out, but Magnum's sharp decline in ratings at this time(Number 8 in 1984 to out of the top 30 by 1985) was an indication that viewers preffered the old formula, and that the show was running out of steam. All is well however, because season seven and eight revert back (for the most part) to the show's old formula. Although I have not seen all of these episodes, the one's I have (Missing Melody, Laura, Little Girl Who) are, in my opinion, some of the best of the series.

1 out of 5 stars colossally, gratingly idiotic.......2007-05-15

For the first couple of seasons, Magnum P.I. was fresh and original.

But round about the second year, things started getting lame. Really lame. Having a private eye who drives a Ferrari and lives in Hawaii was a great setup, but honestly, the writers had pretty much done what could be done after about twenty episodes. After that, they had simply nowhere credible to go with the idea.

By the time we arrive at the fourth and fifth seasons, the writers were so completely out of ideas that every episode was jumping the shark. Nearly every outing was of the same worn ilk: one of Magnum (or Higgins's) long-lost but beloved acquaintances, whom we've never seen before, shows up out of nowhere; is in some sort of trouble, being followed, or wrongly implicated in some skullduggery. In the end, we are invariably relieved to discover that Magnum's "gut" was never off, and he always gets his man.

Over and over and over again.

And by the sixth season? You get to the point where you'd rather have molten lead poured into your nostrils than watch another minute.

I admit I liked the series when I was a kid, but it's just plain torture watching it now.

P.S. I am delighted that everybody hates this review!

A ratings hit for eight seasons on CBS, the action-mystery series Magnum, P.I. makes its DVD boxed set debut in an impressive five-disc package that offers not only the entire first season, but some rarely seen episodes. Positioned in the old Hawaii Five-O time slot (Thursdays at 9) in December of 1980, Magnum quickly became a hit, thanks to the combination of smart and witty scripting, gorgeous locations, and the considerable charm of lead Tom Selleck as former Naval Intelligence officer Thomas Magnum, who gives up his position to become a private investigator on Oahu with the help of fellow Vietnam vets T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti). Magnum also provided security for the lavish estate of wealthy (and never-seen) mystery writer Robin Masters, which gave him access to the author's expensive vehicles (including a prized Ferrari), much to the disapproval of Masters's manservant Higgins (Jonathan Hillerman).

A rare series that skillfully blended action, humor, drama, and suspense, Magnum, P.I.'s first season gets the boxed set treatment its fans have been hoping for, with all 18 first-season episodes (including the two-part pilot, "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii") included on four discs. The fifth disc contains four rarely shown bonus episodes, including season 3's "Ki'ls Don't Lie," which featured a crossover plot with Simon and Simon, as well as its conclusion ("Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend"), which kicked off S&S's second season; the latter episode has never been aired as part of Magnum's syndicated package, which is another reason for fans to pick up and enjoy this long-awaited set. --Paul Gaita

Being Magnum fans I purchased the first four seasons as an Anniversary gift for my husband. We are really enjoying the DVD's.

We had them for a few days when a storm caused us to lose power off and on for 3 days...thankfully I had 3 of my four hour batteries charged for our compact DVD player. We spent 4 hours the first night of the storms watching Magnum. We had forgotten that the theme music had been changed, kind of strange at first.

We have been very happy with the quality of the DVD's so far and are anxiously awaiting for season 7 and 8 to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a great series!.......2007-04-21

I really forgot how good some of those first season early episodes were until I bought the season 1 DVD. "Skin Deep" is probably the most entertaining episode of the series. Other standouts are "China Doll" and "J "Digger" Doyle". What I enjoyed most was the 1982 crossover episode as the featuring Gerald McRaney and Jamison Parker from Simon and Simon from season 2. Also the Simon episode "Emeralds are a girls best friend" and although not as big a fan of later seasons, the 2 part season 5 opener w/ a young unknown Sharon Stone playing a psycho...big surprise there. I found it neat with the discoesque theme song for the first 10 episodes too. You could see how the 4 main characters found their niche as the season progressed.

    5 out of 5 stars Regars.......2007-03-27

Yesterday I received the product I bought. Excelent product and very good disposition from Amazon when the first product I bought lost it. Thank you very much.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for a "guy show".......2007-03-11

I never really watched this show on tv originally because it did not appeal to me. I bought the 1st season for my husband and wound up watching it with him. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I would recommend this to women even if you are not a Tom Selleck fan. The character development makes this show so it's good to start out at season 1 and you'll appreciate it more. Each episode plays on Magnum and his friends and there are always interesting guest stars who everyone will probably recognize. Give this P.I. show a try.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-02-21

This season was sent to replace my original set. I was happy with the service that Amazon gave me to replace the original set. It was sent in a timely fashion and it is greatly appreciated. I really enjoy the series.

5 out of 5 stars Like Tarantino? You'll love Jackie Brown!.......2007-07-03

Great little movie. Not as nasty as "Reservoir Dogs" or as funny as "Get Shorty," but has its own charms. If you're a Tarantino fan, you need to see this one. It's an example of what a great director and talented actors can do with a "quiet" movie (very few gun battles and car chases).

5 out of 5 stars Jackie, I love you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-14

I feel in love with Pam Grier the moment I saw this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cast, Grier is Outstanding, Quentin Tarantino's Best .......2007-05-26

This is an exciting movie with an all time great cast. The cast is so good that DeNiro has a relatively minor role. Pam Grier is excellent as a mature woman desperately trying to make some kind of a career last, no matter how limited, while running money for a gun dealer, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson is terrific, as a manic yet terrifying killer whose ambition is to make lots of money no matter what the price for any associates. Literally under the gun from both sides with the police (played by Keaton and Michael Brown) with Jackson puttimg pressure from the other side, Grier plays a smart, wiley and sympathetic woman who plans to not only survive but take a desperate attempt at financial freedom. Robert Forster, plays her empathetic bondsman and potential love interst, if not friend, who knows the criminal justice system and virtually acts as her mentor and consultant. The interplay between Forster and Grier play off extremley well against the fearsome street smart Jackson. Tarentno's style of moving abruptly to scene to scene livens the drama as you see the key part of the film from different dramatic clips. The final builds up in dramatic tension and suddenly grows calm as the ending virtually crashes in a burst. Very well done and Pam Grier looks terrific and sexy even in her movie charcter's mid life crisis. An ultimate classic.

5 out of 5 stars I wish Tarantino made more films like this.......2007-05-15

I love Tarantino's style, which is powered as much by mood as by story line. I have viewed this film at least a dozen times now, and it has made me laugh and feel anxious with every single viewing. In this film, rather than violence for its own sake or a strangely parallel universe of plausible if impossible crime, you get really good characters in an unusual situation.

There is Jackie, the seemingly normal woman at the center of the film who turns out to be as cool as a cumcumber and a superb manipulator. She is wonderfully subtle in her desperation, as much financial as middle aged and not wanting to start over again. Then there is Max, a burntout bail bondsman who chooses to help her because he loves her in a very mature and low-key way. With Ordell, you get a great foul-mouthed bad guy, with hilarious dialogue, dim wits, and style. He moves things along with his menacing presence, greed, and alcoholic rage. His hangers-on are also splendidly eccentric and dumb. Finally, there are the young cops who are enjoying "playing the cop", as Cherry puts it. This mix offers a uniquely balanced chemistry of characters that are not in the slightest sterotypical, but quirky and entirely believable.

The greatest thing that Tarantino did was to cast Grier and Forster, two has-beens who give remarkable performances even though they are not young anymore. They are so good that they eclipse the wonderful work of the others, which is also first rate. Again, they capture the mood of the time, and their age anxieties, extremely well. The drama is mature, not the usual bust-em-up adolescent fare. This is so rare.

FInally, there is the wonderfully intricate plot. Here, the details really matter, and you can view the film many times to piece Jackie's entire plan together in its wonderful and very dangerous orchestration. While some reviewers say it feels too static, I found the tension subtle and far more convincing than anything else that Tarantno has done - never outlandish, but taut. In this, he tells a story that could really happen, right down to the ambiguous ending.

This is by far my favorite Tarantino film and one of the best I have ever seen, a genuine master[iece. It is unlike any other film noir you will ever find, because of the fine work of Grier and Forester. You will not get a formula here, but a solid drama that is very scary and very funny. Just when you think Hollywood cannot produce talent, someone like Tarrantino comes along.

    Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Film pimp Tarantino b****slaps the nonbelievers.......2007-05-14

Quentin goes a different route with this fun film, a mystery that builds constantly before the crime is even committed. It's based on the book "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard.
Basically, the movie revolves around Jackie(Pam Grier), an airline stewardess, trying to smuggle in a half million in cash. Lots of people are interested in this delivery, both feds, hustlers, and a bail bondsman. There are scams stacked on top of scams, it's so exciting to see how it all unfolds.
Samuel Jackson has got cool down pat. Here he plays a street-smart gun runner, Ordell Robbie. He's a dangerous man to try to double cross. This character dominates every scene he is in, just like he did as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. I hope Samuel and Quentin team up again in the near future, they are awesome together!
This plot has a very linear structure, which is rare for a Tarantino film. It still has his brilliant dialogue, superb but toned down action scenes, edgy humor, and great soundtrack. It's his most underrated work, a must own!

4 out of 5 stars Sellick carries this season through thick and thin.......2007-05-12

Magnum is a show that follows the "star + ensemble" formula that has always been a mainstay of the action movie and TV industries. Nowhere does the formula been more successfully used, especially in the later seasons of Magnum. Stories are often set up through the backgrounds of the supporting characters. But it's still up to the star, in this case Tom Sellick, to carry the bulk of the load. Luckily Sellick is up to the challenge, and I think this season relies on Sellick more than any previous season to keep the show interesting and entertaining. Whenever the plot gets a little silly - and that happens in every season of Magnum - Sellick's down-to-earth and lovable portrayal of Magnum makes the show a joy to watch.

So what happens in this season? The most important plot points are the return of "Mac" (reincarnated as a charming con man), the development of Carol, the district attorny, and the increasing use of Icepick, Rick's godfather-like underworld connection. Few, if any, of the episodes are among the best of the series, but there are lots of good shows here to make the purchase price worthwhile. "Mac's Back" is the most obvious must-have episode of the season. Unlike others, I find the 2-part premier of the season to be overly melodramatic and possibly the worst shows of the season. The other 2-parter, featuring a rescue mission to a Cambodian jungle village, makes good use of its time and even brings Higgins back into his military acoutrements.

Many fans feel the show decreased in quality over the last few seasons. I am of the opinion that the show continued to get better - mostly due to the richness of the back stories and the quality of the supporting cast. Season 5 may not be the best season, but it's still a lot of fun to watch. Although there are no extras on this DVD edition, at least this season finally puts to rest the technical problems that plagued the releases of earlier seasons: for the first time, there was not a single show marred by segments unreadable by my DVD player.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum P.I. - The complete fifth season.......2007-03-14

If you are a Tom Selleck fan, this is for you!! I like the action and antics that Thomas and his buddies get into in each episode. I also love that this is set in Hawaii. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun. It's like taking a mini vacation with each episode.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-18

We own all the seasons of Magnum PI. While the content of this season is very good, the DVD quality is poor.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of shows decline.......2007-01-17

As a huge Magnum PI fan only 2nd to Simon and Simon, season 5 was the beginning of the shows decline through some outlandish subject matter through some of the episodes. There's always been political elements to the show, but they seemed to stretch one's imagination beyond realism. Season 2 through season 4 are the 3 "must owns" if you were to only have 3. The shows subject matter was at its peak and was fresh during those seasons. The Vietnam era ended right around the time I was born so being under 40, I tended to enjoy the episodes most like season 2's football episode featuring Dick Butkus, Season 3's episode with Rick and AJ Simon along with Morgan Fairchild, as well as season 4's with Magnum meeting Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

Return to the Big Island for more adventure with Tom Selleck's charmingly roguish detective hero, Thomas Magnum, courtesy of this three-disc set, which compiles the entire second season (1981-1982) of Magnum, P.I.. The 22 episodes included here (among them the two-part "Memories Are Forever") crystallize the key to the series' success: an appealing blend of action, drama, mystery, and comedy, cemented by Selleck and his likable castmates, especially John Hillerman, who would earn a Golden Globe for his work on Magnum in '82. Highlights of the season include Magnum's attempt to stop an international assassin ("The Jororo Kill," with Tyne Daly), the arrival of Hemingway-esque author Mad Buck Gibson (Darren McGavin) in the episode of the same name, and the aforementioned two-parter, which reunites Magnum with a woman he thought to have died after marrying her while serving in Vietnam. The usual array of classy guest stars are also on hand for this season; in addition to the aforementioned actors, there are turns by Mimi Rogers, Vic Morrow, Vera Miles, Jill St. John, and Elisha Cook Jr. (who plays a much different character than his recurring role as "Ice Pick" in future seasons). And Magnum obsessives should note early appearances by Gillian Dobb, who played Agatha Chumley in numerous subsequent episodes, as well as one of Higgins's colorful, estranged half-brothers in "The Elmo Ziller Story." It's unfortunate that the set itself doesn't match the quality of the Episodes--extras are limited to second-season episodes from Knight Rider and The A-Team--but Magnum fans should be pleased to have all the episodes in a single set, and best of all, commercial-free. --Paul Gaita

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete Second Season.......2007-06-28

3 out of 5 stars Magnum hits its stride.......2006-03-04

The first season of Magnum was plagued by poor production values, poor acting by the extras (and often the guest stars too), and a "sameness" that made watching episodes close together (as happens when you have a DVD) a little dull. With the second season, all these issues are alleviated to a great degree (although not entirely eliminated), and the show becomes more fun to watch.

It's not that the average episode is written much better - that will have to wait for later seasons, although the last disc in Season two is solid from top to bottom. No, it's that the characters are now in full form and the stories are richer for the interplay between the 4 main characters (Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick). In fact, the extended universe starts to finally take the form it would keep for the rest of the series, with first appearances by Michelle (Magnum's wife), Agatha (if not the character, at least the actress), and the first of Higgin's legendary half-brothers (Elmo Ziller, from Texas, which allowed us to finally hear John Hillerman's real accent!). Similarly, the shows "feel" more like Magnum, leaving some episodes with bittersweet conclusions, and others without real conclusions at all - like the episode "Mad Buck Gibson" where we never learn if Mad Buck survives his last death-defying stunt. Why not? Well, it wasn't the point of the show, and the show ends just as it should, with Mad Buck appealing to Magnum mano-a-mano and talking him into allowing him to try hang-gliding to Maui.

Unfortunately, I had to deduct a star for the quality of the DVD set. Like all 2-sided DVD's, it's difficult to keep both faces clean, so there were issues with episodes seizing up, or the menu not initialising, etc. Similarly, the presence of the intrusive and extremely annoying Universal fanfare at the beginning of every single episode - luckily the first chapter break occurs right after the theme, but it's still annoying to have to skip ahead every time (Columbo Season 2 has the same thing - what were the Universal execs thinking?!). Finally, there are no extras, except a couple episodes from other shows (A-Team and Knight Rider), although these episodes do set off how well Magnum has aged relative to other pop-dramas made at the time.

1 out of 5 stars Greatest Show Ever,...DVD is JUNK.......2006-01-17

Another reviewer, Mick Black from Cleveland had it right. The video skipped and stopped cold on a few episodes. I carefully cleaned the disks, and the same thing happened. It's a shame one of the great shows off all time is not given it's proper respect by Universal. I didn't expect a lot of "extras," just the original episodes with no frills or technical problems. 5 out of 5 stars Season 3, at last!.......2005-10-21

My wife and I have loved revisiting this series (great entertainment, great scenery...what more could you want?) and have just gotten word that the 3rd season will finally be released January 31st. Happy new year to all "Magnum" fans!

    4 out of 5 stars Season 3 please!.......2005-08-29

To be honest I only purchased series 2 to tide me over till series 3 is released.("Did you see the sunrise?") Series 2 is fun , glossy and expensive looking, but it is in series 3 where they finally hit their straps.

This classic family film made a star of 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in the title role as spunky Velvet Brown, a girl who's determined to enter her horse, Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. Critic Pauline Kael called it "One of the most likeable movies of all time." Mickey Rooney costars as a young man who helps Velvet train Pie for the big race. At the last minute, Velvet herself has to ride Pie in the tournament and cuts her hair to pass for a jockey. Anne Revere won an Oscar as Velvet's mother, as did editor Robert J. Kern, who cut together a terrifically exciting horse race. Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury are also featured as members of the Brown family. --Jim Emerson

    Description

Enchantingly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor became a movie star at age twelve after starring in this classic about a girl and her jockey pal (Mickey Rooney) who transform an unruly horse into a champion.

3 out of 5 stars Love this movie, but the quality is not remastered..........2007-07-01

Love this story about a girl who won a national horse race in England, but why did Warner release a movie like this to DVD without cleaning it up? It has white dots, squiggles, and even green rings in the picture. A couple of times I even saw a black line in the film, which was distracting. This is the movie that made Elizabeth Taylor a star; it deserved a respectable cleanup before its release.

    4 out of 5 stars Belief in a Dream.......2007-06-24

To illustrate the power of the film and especially of Elizabeth Taylor's special quality of illuminosity she brought to it, I read somewhere that a returning WWII GI had come home emotionally depressed and empty from his war experience. He wandered into a movie theater to see this film and came out with at least some sense of his faith in the world and in himself restored based on watching this child's still intact ability to dream and hope.

5 out of 5 stars Film making and story telling at its best!!!.......2007-06-05

It's been years since I've seen this film, and I'd have to say that I was a kid when I first saw this on an old black and white TV. When it was released on a DVD, my wife and I sat down and really enjoyed this fabulous film. We didn't find that it was made poorly. Just the opposite. It had all the earmarks of a fine film - joy, suspense, love, action, drama, comedy, and the like. We didn't find we liked Mickey Rooney's character at first, but he grew on us, and Elizabeth Taylor was simply marvelous, as were her parents. Thoe whole ensemble cast was terrific. And then we get to the horse race and that whole business. I can't say enough about it!! There's a scene in the film where Mickey Rooney tells a tale to the young boy, and it's done without any fanfare of the what the future might hold, but had there ever been plans of making a movie called "The Black Stallion," then this little scene in this film was the precursor.

A fine family film!! We need more like these today!! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars They just don't make 'em like this any more...........2007-05-25

I have probably seen this movie a dozen times from start to finish and each time I come away with a renewed appreciation for hope, hard work, dreams and - yes - folly. This movie, while without question dated and at times a little bit silly, stands the passage of time by virtue of its pure heart and strong moral messages. Velvet Brown - the 12 year old daughter of a butcher in the small town of Sewels in England - wins her gelding, The Pie, in a one-shilling-per-ticket raffle. Mi Taylor, a young American lad walking the roads and lanes of England, comes to visit the Browns and ends up staying and training Velvet and The Pie for the Grand National - the Greatest Horse Race In The World, according to ex-jockey Mi Taylor. My favorite character in the film is hands down Mrs. Brown, the mother, played by the inscrutable Anne Revere. She is wise, gentle, strong - at 20 she swam the English channel - her trainer was Mi Taylor's fater, Dan Taylor - as she says, "there was greatness in him". There is greatness in her. Watch out for the speech she gives her daughter up in the attic when she tells Velvet that she will back her crazy dream to enter the Pie in the Grand National - she believes that "everyone is intitled once in their life to a breathtaking piece of folly". She explains to her daughter that this dream must last her for her whole life- that she must know when it is over and to move on. There is a time for everything in life, she explains - a time for riding a horse in the Grand national, a time for marriage, children, yes even for dying. IN these crazy times when we all want everything fast, now, right away - Mrs. Brown's calm and sensible pacing make the world make sense. Enjoy the film's many mealtimes and small moments. One oddity though - in a family that appears to be English, living in England, the casting directors saw fit to put a very American actor in the part of the youngest Brown child, Donald. Go figure!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF FINEST FAMILY FILMS, ONE OF MOST EXCITING RACES.......2007-04-29

National Velvet is one of the finest family films ever made, and it contains one of the most exciting races, perhaps second only to the chariot race in Ben-Hur. Directed by Clarence Brown (The Yearling, The White Cliffs Of Dover, Edison The Man), who was nominated for Best Director, and based upon Enid Bagnold's novel, it tells the story of a girl named Velvet Brown, who is in love with horses - portrayed passionately and innocently by Elizabeth Taylor. Her father, Mr. Brown - played with good-natured stubbornness by Donald Crisp - and mother, Mrs. Brown - infused with even-tempered wisdom and efficiency by Anne Revere, who won the Oscar for her performance - provide a lot of the entertainment with their constant and playful bantering. Her brother, Donald - played comically but with stone-faced seriousness by Jackie 'Butch' Jenkins - older sister Edwina - given typical teenage aloofness by Angela Lansbury - and younger sister Mally - made likable but somewhat forgettable by Juanita Quigley - round out the family.

The real story is about the relationship between Velvet and a young itinerate named Mi - one of Mickey Rooney's most memorable performances. Mi's father knew the family, and now the son shows up on their doorstep with the idea of robbing them. But he changes his mind after realizing there is something about this family he would like to get to know. Velvet overwhelms him with her obsession over horses, especially since he dislikes them - apparently because of some bad experience. But he changes his mind when quite by chance she wins the county's finest stallion in a lottery. Mi realizes the horse's potential when he jumps a six foot wall, and helps Velvet train him for the Grand National - the most gruelling and dangerous steeplechase in terfdom, full of treacherous jumps and water hazards.

Besides the nomination for director Clarence Brown and the win for actress Anne Revere, the film was also nominated for its lush cinematography and delightful art direction, and won for its masterful editing. Much of this is due to editor Robert Kern's handling of the race, which forms the climax of the film. Except for the chariot race in Ben-Hur, I don't think there has ever been a more realistically staged or exciting race in a film. The stunt work is incredible. It would be a miracle if no men or horses were injured, because they go over those jumps pall mall, sometimes landing, apparently, on their heads, and often piling up on each other. Kudos to the stunt people, horses and trainers.

National Velvet warms and excites the heart, while leaving an impression of human nobility and spiritual values that will not soon be forgotten. And if someone isn't a horse lover at the end of this film, then there's no hope that they ever will be. Great directorial insight, intelligent writing, superb performances and top notch production values make this a small masterpiece.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete Third Season.......2007-06-28

5 out of 5 stars Need to cast my vote..........2007-06-26

Had to drop 5 stars down on the series...because it deserves the high rating...these characters were apart of me while growing up and I watch every intro because just like M*A*S*H, it takes me back to laying on the living room floor getting pumped to see Magnum, Rick, TC, and Higgy baby.

    3 out of 5 stars I'm stumped. Is he?.......2007-05-06

Is it just my imagination or is there something really, really wrong with Magnum? There has to be. Here we see him getting in all these exotic adventures and, nearly always, landing a top-quality girl in the end.

Not just that, but the girls in question are invariably bright, seductive, and willing. Make no mistake: over the years, Thomas Magnum has bagged dozens and dozens of high-class babes! Rarely do we see him strike out.

    And yet, something is awry.

Come the next episode, the newly-won girl is nowhere to be seen. Magnum is once again free as a bird, with no prospects on the horizon. What's happening?

I can imagine if one or two of these women turned out to be total flakes: addicted to drugs, interested only in a one-night stand, besaddled with serious emotional problems, etc. But all of them?

I have a theory. Magnum, you see, despite his manly physique and swoon-inducing moustache, is possessed of private parts that are laughably diminutive. Or categorically non-functional.

This is the only thing that could explain how Magnum can never seem to hang on to a single girl, regardless of how taken with him the woman seemed at the end of the last episode.

I can see them now, storming indignantly out of the guest house, chuckling cruelly as they light a cigarette and hail a cab, refusing to waste another moment with our protesting hero, who stands wrapped in a bedsheet at the door, tears welling in his eyes.
