Amazon.com
A model for dozens of action films to follow, this box-office hit from 1967 refined a die-hard formula that has become overly familiar, but it's rarely been handled better than it was in this action-packed World War II thriller. Lee Marvin is perfectly cast as a down-but-not-out army major who is offered a shot at personal and professional redemption. If he can successfully train and discipline a squad of army rejects, misfits, killers, prisoners, and psychopaths into a first-rate unit of specialized soldiers, they'll earn a second chance to make up for their woeful misdeeds. Of course, there's a catch: to obtain their pardons, Marvin's band of badmen must agree to a suicide mission that will parachute them into the danger zone of Nazi-occupied France. It's a hazardous path to glory, but the men have no other choice than to accept and regain their lost honor. What makes The Dirty Dozen special is its phenomenal cast including Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, Jim Brown, Clint Walker, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, and others. Cassavetes is the Oscar-nominated standout as one of Marvin's most rebellious yet heroic men, but it's the whole ensemble--combined with the hard-as-nails direction of Robert Aldrich--that makes this such a high-velocity crowd pleaser. The script by Nunnally Johnson and Lukas Heller (from the novel by E.M. Nathanson) is strong enough to support the all-star lineup with ample humor and military grit, so if you're in need of a mainline jolt of testosterone, The Dirty Dozen is the movie for you. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Pure Entertainment.......2007-05-06
The main problem with The Dirty Dozen is that is shown virtually every night on a TV channel somewhere, so its difficult to justify owning the DVD at all. However this is a good film (and the package would make it 4 and half stars for me) and one I have watched over and over again.
It's an 'A' list cast:
Lee Marvin
Ernest Borgnine
Telly Savalas
Donald Sutherland
Charles Bronson
John Cassavetes (who was nominated for Best supporting actor in 1967)
Robert Ryan
The first 2/3 of the film works best where The Major (Marvin) has to train his bunch of no-hopers. Of course they are under-cover so he upsets some of the top brass and this leads to some run-ins with Col Breed (Ryan). These scenes are wonderfully done and the acting and the script all work brilliantly. For me the last part of the film is less successful. This is where they go into battle. I'm not sure why I find this less interesting, but perhaps its because really the Army is fighting itself in the first part of the film and as soon as they are fighting the Germans I don't care as much.
The extras are worthwhile in this release. There are some interesting commentaries from members of the original cast and a few 'experts'. On the 2nd disc you also get the 1985 sequel movie "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" (which still has members of the original cast in it), plus three documentaries.
So superb entertainment from director Robert Aldrich, which does hold up to repeated viewings - even if you have already seen it 25 times!
A classic for your collection.......2007-04-10
I finally had to own the classic after so many years of just seeing again and again on TV. One of Lee Marvin's better movies.
Great movie and interesting DVD extras!.......2007-02-11
Love this movie...one of my favorite war movies of all time. The DVD also has a great documentary that follows Lee Marvin around during the making of the film. Great insight into the movie as well as Lee Marvin, legendary tough guy.
Not bad.......2007-01-17
An adventurous Vietnam-era war movie with a definate cynical side. The Army chain of command is shown to be inept, out of touch, uncaring, etc. The surprising part is that this is supposed to be WWII, when even the Left thinks we were the good guys. For those with military experience, you will have to just turn off everything you know about how things are really done in order to enjoy this one. Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson are good. But the movie could've been much shorter or could've included more exciting parts-like how the survivors got back, etc.
A violent war film, and a great action-adventure entertainment..........2006-12-27
Robert Aldrich seemed torn between American heroism or to indulge in a celebration of violence with an intriguing angle on combat in World War II adventure...
A dozen dangerous criminals (thieves, murderers, rapists, psychopaths) - serving life sentences - offered a chance of pardon if they take part in a hazardous commando mission... They are trained to kill on a different level under the leadership of an insubordinate major, very short on discipline, and dropped in parachute near Rennes in Brittany to destroy a large fortified château used as a rest center and a conference place for general staff officers...
The initial tension between Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) and the convicts quickly collapses while Aldrich's ability was building considerable tough action scenes...
Aldrich didn't neglect the character development of his superb cast offering some insights into the personalities of this unusual recruits... His believes that self-interest is the motive of all human conduct... Aldrich filled the sense of outrage of his characters, a sense so brave and different in "Attack," in 1957.
The claims about capital punishment and the anti-militarism spirit were quickly discarded in favor of the terrific and cruel action scenes: the bloody climax which has a considerable number of German officers with the benefit of female companionship, all trapped in a bomb shelter...
Marvin and Oscar Nominee John Cassavetes stand out among the cast...
Lee Marvin creates the most interesting and influential violent hero: the sardonic major!
The game of death is played at its best in a powerful man's picture...
"The Dirty Dozen" formula was held later in André De Toth's "Play Dirty" in which a group of ex-criminals led by Captain Michael Caine, destroy a German oil depot in the North African campaign in World War II.

Description
Atten-hut! Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin lead these tales of combat that mix firepower with tongue-in-cheek attitude. Eastwood's misfit troops are in the army and in the money when they slip behind enemy lines to steal Nazi gold. Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas and Don Rickles are among the larcenous heroes in Kelly's Heroes [Side A]. The Dirty Dozen [Side B] is the influential granddaddy of hard-hitting ensemble action flicks, a tale of jailed losers volunteered in the army way for a suicide mission. Marvin plays the tough-as-nails major who bullies his squad (Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, Sutherland, Savalas and more) into a fighting unit that can win this war any of a dozen ways. Fall in for action!
Customer Reviews:
Deceptive Packaging.......2007-06-05
I already own both films but purchased this as the case described "Dirty Dozen" as being a 16x9 transfer. It is not. Further, special features are listed for this film that are not actually on the disc. I knew I was in trouble when the film began with the Turner logo. Old transfer. "Kelly's Heroes" IS 16x9 as it was on the single feature release.
In addition, it appears the newly repackaged "How the West Was Won" suffers from the same deceptive packaging by being labeled "enhanced for widescreen TVs" when it is not and is also an old Turner master.
People are bound to complain so it's hard to believe Warner Home Video, previously very reliable, would do this intentionally. Something is defintely wrong in their QC department these days.

the blu ray edition is ok. there are grainy spots and parts of the movie the sound does not sync with lip movement of actors. The blu ray that works is fabulous but if you own it on dvd dont upgrade.

Description
The Battle of the Bulge: Nazi Panzer forces stage a last-ditch Belgian front offensive that could turn the tide of WWII. Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw and Robert Ryan in the spectacular recreation of a crucial campaign.
Battleground: Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy star in this remarkable war film, nominated for six Oscars(R) (including Best Picture) about courageous American G.I.s caught up in the battle at Bastogne.
The Big Red One Special Edition: "The real glory of war," Samuel Fuller said, "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed U.S. First Infantry in WWII, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not...until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy and across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled, and, maybe, survived.
The Dirty Dozen: Twelve jailbirds will earn their freedom...if they survive a suicide mission against the Nazi brass. Tough-as-nails Lee Marvin leads a nothing-to-lose convict squad of Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Trini Lopez, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker and more in the all-time action trendsetter. Where Eagles
Dare: The mission is clear. Get in. Get the general. Get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from an Alpine fortress should also be told to trust nothing - including the search-and-rescue orders just issued. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood go Where Eagles Dare in this twisty World War II thriller written by action master Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra) and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly's Heroes). Known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics with dynamic efficiency. And Eastwood's cool-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another. The film became Eastwood's then-largest hit and its studio's #1 moneymaker of the year.

WWII Collection Battle Front Europe.......2007-05-18
5 of my favorite WWII movies in one package. Super!
War Movies.......2006-11-11
Three of this collection are movies I have wanted for many years, and to get them in one collection is my reason for acquiring the set. Battleground is the story of a small group of doughboys stuck in the Argonne, basically surrounded by Germans, and their fight for survival. Where Eagles Dare is about a group of highly trained soldiers trying to destroy a fortress in the Alps controlled by the Germans; however, a mole and high ranking officer overseeing the operation want the group to fail. The Dirty Dozen is a war classic about criminals given a respite to carry out a basically suicide mission against a host of high ranking German officers
GREAT ADVENTURE .......2006-08-04
I have watched a lot of WWII DVDs and found that these movies while hollywoodized to an extent are pretty accurate. These movies will entertain you completely!!! This is a great group of war films and I enjoyed each and every one of them thouroughly!!! Cant beat the price either!!
Thrilling War Films.......2006-07-26
I recently purchased this DVD European War collection and I'm enjoying these wonderful war films at a price that's so affordable it must be seen to believe. This World War II DVD Collection-European Warfare includes 5 outstanding War epics that were received by the movie-going public as fascinating with a great story line and many action-packed scenes that most critics moved to give these films a thumbs up. It's difficult to point out which film ranks the best. You can choose any 5 exciting war epics, my favorites "The Dirty Dozen" and "Where Eagles Dare" were given 3-1/2 - 4 Stars. The picture transfer on all 5 are crisp and clear and the sound is remarkably full-bodied stereo. Five stars for a great collection of War films that can be watched over and over again.

Having just 90 minutes to cover the music of Louisiana in general and New Orleans in particular might not seem sufficient, but director Michael Murphy is up to the task in this entertaining documentary. The subject is huge: this is, after all, the birthplace of jazz, the spawning ground (with neighbor Mississippi) of the blues, the home of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, the Neville Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and countless others, and the melting pot of African, European, and Caribbean cultures. But instead of focusing on the big names (Louis Armstrong gets only a perfunctory mention), the film spotlights (through interviews and live footage) lesser-known contemporary talents like blues guitarist John Campbell, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, songwriter-producer Allen Toussaint, a 12-year-old Cajun fiddler, and a 91-year-old Dixieland trumpeter. There's plenty of local color, what with sidebars about Louisiana's art, culture, and religion, but it's the infectious music that makes this one tasty gumbo. --Sam Graham

This movie is brilliant! Having seen the Neville Brothers in concert; and having a few CDs by them as well as Dr John and Buckwheat Zydeco this opened my eyes and ears to more diverse and extremely talented musicians from New Orleans. The highlight of it for me was young Amanda Shaw. Her vibrant personality and
musicianship were amazing. After watching this i had to add some more music to my collection (from Amazon), that is Prof Longhair and Amanda Shaw. The only dissapointment was that Anne
Savoy was interviewed but did not perform - she also is brilliant! Living thousands of miles away it is great to be able to watch such a diverse bunch of talented musicians on one DVD. One comment - all the music is music you can dance to - even the gospel! One day i'm going there.

Telly Savalas is back to is dirty ways.......2006-11-13
Here is a short explaination for those of you that are on this page going "what the hell are these films?" If your on this page I'm sure you know about the film The Dirty Dozen. That likeable tough-guy WWII film was a box office success back in 1967 but it seems few people today know that it inspired three sequels. Yes the sequels were all roughly made 20 years after and for TV but three sequels did follow. The first sequel "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" was released in 1985 with Lee Marvin returning. The film must have brought a good crowd to the TV as two more sequels were soon made: "Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission" and "The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission" both which are featured here in this double feature ("Next Mission" is availabe in the Special 2 Disc Edition of the first Dirty Dozen)
Lee Marvin opting out of these last two entries (perhapes by his death) was replaced by Telly Savalas who reprises his role from the original Dirty Dozen. To be honest I wasn't all that hot with the second Dirty Dozen film "Next Mission". It was alright entertainment for a TV made film but I doubt I will be watching it much. I however was surprised by how much I liked these other two sequels with Telly Savalas. I'm not sure but Savalas, even in his old age, has a screen presence to him that makes these sequels very enjoyable. The plots arn't all that enthrawling or great but Savalas makes these films worth checking out. Savalas in each sequel is surrounded by a cast that many seasoned film enthusiests will recognize such as Bo Svenson (Walkign Tall Parts 2 & 3), Thom Matthews (Return of the Living Dead I & II), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters 1 & 2), amongst others. I had a great time playing "spot that actor".
For TV made sequels these are pretty entertaining. Sure the plots lack but Savalas and the rest of the cast keeps the films trucking along. The production value on these films are also great considering the hinderence fo being shown on TV. If your fan of the film The Dirty Dozen then I highly recommend picking up it's now rarely seen TV made sequels. Now only if they would release the short lived 80's Dirty Dozen television series to DVD...
When I first ordered this DVD I was expecting a "flipper" (a double sided disc with a film on each side) like most other MGM double features. MGM however was nice enough to have each film on a seperate disc. I like this because it helps prevent against smudges and scratches. Both films are in Full Screen. They were filmed for TV so they were never shot in widescreen. There are no special features. I actually thought I would never see these little seen TV sequels on DVD so I thank MGM for the simple fact of releasing them.
On a side note that has nothing to do with the films, I found it an annoyance that all three sequels have differences in the titles. "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" has no "The" in the subtitle. "Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission" has no "The" before Dirty. "The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission" has "The" in both places. You think the person in charge of titling would have found some uniformity between them but oh well...it's just a minor thing :-)
Dozen TV redeux.......2006-06-09
First there was the classic Dirty Dozen. then Lee Marvin agaonm starred as Major John Reismanin for 1985 made-for-TV sequel The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission (which is on the new two disk version of the Dirty Dozen)
1n 1987, Marvin's Maj. John Reisman was replaced by (1967 Dozen cast member) Telly Savalas's Major Wright for two further TV movies which this collection is made of
Savalas's Wright tries to act similar to Marvin's Reisman. It is still twelve convicts sent on a secret mission. In both TV movies on this DVD collection, Ernest Borgnine cameos as General Worden (the role he created for the original Dozen movie)
What annoys me is the LOVE BOAT style casting these movies have. In Deadly Mission, the film has such actors as Randall "tex" Cobb, Vince Edwards (Ben Casey), Bo Svenson (Walking Tall) and the Van Patten Brothers (James & Vincent). In Fatal Mission, the actors are Jeff Conaway (Taxi,Babylon 5), Alex Cord (Airwolf), Erik Estrada (CHiPs), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, tv's OZ), Heather Thomas (The Fall Guy) and Boxer Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini.
The other problem with the film, when it comes to guns, battle sounds--Those are three time higher than the dialog. So you have to turn up the sound to hear what they say and turn down the sound for the war scenes
Now other than that, these two TV movies are great work for TV movies. The action is there. The plots is there. It works very well as a set of TV movies brought to DVD.
