This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Although it was largely neglected during its brief theatrical release, this wonderful movie has since enjoyed a thriving appreciation on video--see it and you'll understand why. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining adaptation but far from perfect DVD.......2007-06-21
I enjoy Roald Dahl's books and was eager to see the film adaptation of THE WITCHES. The movie is well crafted with awesome special effects for the year it was made and Jim Henson's mouse puppetry is convincing. However I was disappointed by the DVD in several ways. First of all the sound was just awful especially with the Norwegian, British, and er High Grand Witch accents. To compound matters there is no close captioning of any kind on the disc so the viewer needs to be in a quiet room and listen very carefully. Needless to say the the DVD is also devoid of any special features.
As to the story I actually found the first part quite disturbing for a "family film". Luke's loving Norwegian grandmother tells him an awful story of a childhood friend who was imprisoned in a painting by a witch until her eventual "disappearance" in old age and the story is so realistically enacted it is really quite sad and chilling. Grandma also shows him the scar where her little finger was before an encounter with a witch and gives him some warning advice as to how to recognize the creatures. The next morning Luke and his grandmother learn Luke's parents have both been killed in an accident. Shortly after Grandma Helga comes down with a serious case of diabetes and she and Luke leave for a vacation at an English seaside village.
At their vacation hotel they run into a convention of witches and this more surreal part of the story is actually more light hearted and comical despite some intense scenes. The filmmakers give a happy contrived ending to the story unlike what Roald Dahl wrote in the novel. I usually strongly object to filmmakers altering such major plot points but Helga and Luke had suffered so much earlier in the film I was glad to see them experience some joy. Really young or really sensitive viewers will probably find this story too disturbing to be enjoyable.
Morticia rules!.......2007-05-18
Angelica is nothing like her suave alluring figure in the Addams Family, but plays this part to the hilt, as the high grand witch. It is her performace that makes it the sole reason to even watch this movie in the first place. She is something to behold in every gesture, and wild black covered gloved hand movement. Her dark bold features make her the natural as beauty in public, but inwardly hideous in true witch form. Jim Henson production moves the story along with magically transformed mice from children, and the calm bond between the main character child and his grandmother is very tolarable.
The assorted loose witches in the community here, are very cliche crone women, with reflected colored eyes and smiles galore. Finally a female escort to the grand high witch turns the other cheek, and helps the victims along. This actress is cute, and not a crone with a very likeable quirky laugh. However, the other witches do not follow her lead, and are driven by Angelica's high brow figure to send doom to all children. Great family entertainment for halloween, and not too scary for the real children out there.
Childhood memories.......2007-05-10
When I was a kid every time I went to the video store I would ask my mom if I could rent this movie. Now that I'm an adult & I bought it, I'm not sure how I could watch it. It was still a pretty good movie, but it was kind of creepy for a kids movie. I can't believe it didn't give me nightmares. I just remember wanting to grow up and get purple contacts. If anyone remembers this from childhood they should definitely watch it again. It brought back a bunch of memories and I was almost able to quote the movie again.
Another creepy, wonderful show.......2007-04-14
I think this show is great. Just make sure you're a Ronald Dahl fan, or else you'll walk away saying "that was wrong in so many ways!" Could be kind of scary for sensitive kids..in my opinion.
Lover of fairy tales.......2007-03-09
From an adult perspective, you have to be a lover of fairy tales to appreciate this movie. It is worth it just to watch Angelica Huston's performance. Humorous in parts; scary (for children) in parts. Great ending. May be a little scary for under-10-year-olds.

Jack Nicholson was born to play the devil, and in George Miller's adaptation of John Updike's novel he plays it for all he's worth. As a wolfish womanizer summoned by three bored women in a picturesque New England town, he's sating all of his appetites with a rakish grin. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer play the women who discover their untapped magical powers by accident. The smart and sexy singles, out of place in the conservatism of their village, find happiness, however briefly, in the arms and bed of the libidinous devil, but he's got his own ulterior motives. Miller revels in the sensual display of sex, food, and magic, whipping up a storm of effects that finally get out of hand in an overblown ending. It's a handsome film with strong performances all around, but the mix of anarchic comedy and supernatural horror doesn't always gel and Miller seems to lose the plot in his zeal for cinematic excitement. The performances ultimately keep the film aloft: the hedonistic joy that Nicholson celebrates with every leering gaze and boorish vulgarity is almost enough to make bad form and chauvinism cool. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Need someone with demonic dash to portray the Devil? There are only two choices. Old Ned himself. And Jack Nicholson. The Witches of Eastwick to the better actor-and came up with the sleekest, sexiest supernatural comedy/thriller to emerge from this or any other world, earning Nicholson 1987 Best Actor Awards from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. The "witches" are in three modern-day women yearning for Mr. Right in a quaint New England town full of Mr. Uptights. Played glowingly by Cher (Moonstruck), Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo's Oil) and Michelle Pfeiffer (The Age of Innocence), they're lovely enough to tempt even the most jaded netherworld denizen. Soon, wealthy Daryl van Horne (Nicholson) arrives. Is his sudden appearance a coincidence? Or the outcome of the women's unconscious sorcery in this smooth adaptation of John Updyke's novel? Conjure up an evening's entertainment with The Witches of Eastwick. And have a devil of a good time.

Please tell me it hasn't been 20 years. . ........2007-06-07
. . .but sadly it has. I cannot believe I first saw this film in the theater way back in 1987. I think I may have liked it better back then, but it's still pretty good. The acting is wonderful: Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon (Cher never seems to change, but the other two look really young in this), Veronica Cartwright (chewing up the scenery), the dad from "Six Feet Under" and, of course, Jack Nicholson, who was born to play a horny little devil. He's terrific. I love the little town it's filmed in, and the special effects aren't bad either. I'm planning to see the musical version of this film next week, which should be interesting. That's why I watched it again tonight, just to refresh my memory. I know I liked the book better, but this film adaptation is good. Not great. It just doesn't have that extra zing to put it over the top--but worth watching.
Like "Click" for girls!.......2007-04-18
This is an entertaining movie, unless you know several girls who are under the impression you are Satan, then you might want to not let them see it. They'll probably see it anyway. Girls are resourceful like that. If they do, do your best not to act like Satan and you should be ok.
One of my movies...........2007-04-17
Love this movie as this type of movie
fits me to a tee. It is a entertaining
movie to watch. Nicholson is always
great to watch but Cher, Susan and Michelle
are absolutely perfect too.
I highly recommend this movie.
"Who are you? Just your average, horny little devil", .......2007-04-09
Jack Nicholson gives his funniest and one of the finest performances as Mr. Darryl van Horn, the mysterious and wicked man who arrives to the quiet and sleepy little town of Eastwick after three women, the Blonde Souki (Pfeifer), the Redhead Jean (Sarandon), and the Brunette Alex (Cher), best friends and witches dreamed him up as a man who can bring some changes and excitement in their lonely lives.
Several great actors have played the Prince of Darkness during their careers but Nicholson was born to play a "friendly" devil that can seduce any woman with no exception by becoming exactly what she wants him to be. The scenes where Nicholson seduces Alex (Daryl Van Horne: Well, if that's how you feel about it, then that's how you feel about it. Is THAT how you feel about it?), Jean, and Souki are among the sexiest I've ever seen.
The movie has too many vomiting scenes for my liking, and the visuals are sometimes too screaming but Nicholson is delightful. I never thought that playing cello could lead to such flaming results - and I used to play it. :)
7/10
Wicked fun.......2007-01-28
I remember watching this movie on cable ages ago as a kid and I enjoyed it.Now as an adult I love it: Great acting, great dp work, story is funny, sexy, dark and sassy. Special effects are not bad at all considering it's a 1987 flick.
A strange man, apparently summoned by three frustrated women, shows up in a perfectly ordinary American town. He soon will change their lives for the better or the worse.Filled with magic, symbolism and detail, the movie catches our attention from the start.
However, like another reviewer pointed out, the only difference between this DVD release and the one from 1997 is the case. The image and sound are not bad but the movie hasn't been restored at all. Some scratches and white speckles are present throughout the film.
My advice is, if you own the 1997 version of this DVD don't waste your money buying this reissue...Unless you like the new cover better.

Pretty good for the price.......2007-01-20
None of these movies really rates better than 2 stars, but you get four for the price of one, so I'll give it 4 stars.
Lord of the Vampires: Some goth looking dude lives with two girls, one a typical bar slut and the other a slightly older babe. They're all vampires, and they lure guys to the house to have sex and then a little nibble afterwards. Some unsuspecting folks who have just robbed a convenience store end up being invited to stay the night after their van breaks down. The characters were fairly well developed, and the action moved along at an acceptable rate, though it was slowed considerably by the fact that there's a sex scene every 5 minutes for the first half of the movie.
Project Vampire: This is fairly dull and really low budget. The only movie of the set that doesn't have a lot of nudity. Some guys escape from a project they were working on, where they had a serum to turn people into vampires. They're hunted down by the other people from the project. Like I say, really low budget and nothing interesting ever happens. Still, it's watchable.
Witchouse 3, Demon Fire: Some girl is in an abusive relationship and leaves to stay with some friends of hers, only to discover that they're involved in witchcraft. They strut around looking sexy from time to time, otherwise it's not a very interesting movie, though certainly watchable.
Witchcraft XII: This was only saved by the presence of a really sexy babe who kept showing up in one sexy outfit after another after another. I kept watching just to see what she'd wear next. The plot is total cheese, some satanic women hang out at a bar and lure men back to their house where they have sex with them and then some guy in a Darth Maul Halloween mask shows up and kills them. A couple people who knew one of the victims investigates. It's a "so bad it's good" type movie that moves along at an okay pace but just like Lord of the Vampires it's slowed down considerably by a sex scene every five minutes for the first half of the movie.
I liked these; if you're looking for sleazy low budget trash, this should fit the bill quite nicely.

Implants 'R' Us.......2006-11-27
I suppose one could overlook the wretched acting in this alleged spoof of "The Witches of Eastwick", and forgive the frequent and unexplained mood shifts of the main characters, and instead just look at the almost constant nudity of the female characters.
Problem is, you can't, or at least I can't. The three "Witches" are the victims of the most appallingly botched implant jobs in the history of science. Combine that with the way they stare blankly at the camera during their "lust", with the female equivalent of a post-lobotomy Randall P. McMurphy look on their faces, and you'll be wishing you had the wasted hour and a half back someday when you're on your death bed.
More treats than tricks.......2006-03-19
A man named 'David' {Matt Dalpiaz} is plagued by a dream and becomes obsessed with finding the source of it - three succulent succubi undulating in sexual abandon by raging flames before being sacrificed. He and wife 'Tiffany' {Monique Parent} are the decendants of those who burned their ancestors at the stake in eras past. This takes he and his deliciously erubescent wife out into the wilderness where the car breaks down for no apprent reason outside a cabin where he seeks to use the phone, in which reside three very familiar beauties. One delay after another occurs, including the secret administering of a potion into their wine {which would have been better applied with a pentagram "poison ring"}, until they are obligated to stay the night. He remains haunted by a pervading feeling of impending doom, which does not prevent the lovely ladies from taking their pleasures with he and his wife, from the jacuzzi to the bathtub to the woods to the bedroom.
The couple are regailed with the legend of "La Cacanya", a creature lurking about the surrounding forest when suddenly, a stunning brunette appears before him in the darkness, who after quite a delightful indulgence, warns him of the deadly intentions of the three witches, the so-called "Daughters of La Cacanya" {one of whom wears a weakagram, which does not seem to quite work}. But they are certainly a preferred alternative to the typical warty hag depiction.
The next morning, David finds the car operable, but his wife is missing. Upon a frantic search, he meets with the lovely brunette again, who arms him with a silver blade, supposedly the only weapon effective against a witch. He finds Tiffany strapped to a stake by a bonfire, ready to be sacrificed. La Cacanya makes a brief appearence, and David predictably rescues the wife at the last moment.
Unfortunately, the lengthy lesbian scenes seem like gratuitous fluff, with seemingly minimal contact between the women. The title is obviously a double-en-tendre' on the film "The Witches of Eastwick', although this plot really has nothing to do with that story at all. The performers are visually superb, although their talents are not maximized herein.
Great movie and free!.......2006-03-19
First, I couldn't complain about this movie even if I wanted too. It was free! This is a great flick. Not scary, but what is nowadays. Just look at the cover. You can tell it's scary. The women are hot. The movie did need some blood. But other than that. Thumbs up!
Witches of Wastewick.......2005-10-08
This movie was not worth the cost to return it. DO NOT waste your money. They completely waste the talents of Monique Parent. the hot tub scene must have been filled with ice cold water. This movie could not heat up a 14 year old virgin. If you like giant fake breasts then okay. better yet spend your money on fake lotto tickets at least those are SUPPOSED to be funny. By far the worst movie with the least stimulating sex imaginable. Don't complain if you ignore this warning.
Nice little film.......2005-07-20
Ok. I know this says this film comes out end of august but I got an early copy from somewhere ahead of that date and picked it up. I really liked this film. in fact the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because the director has a habit of making his stars break the 4th wall looking at the camera during sex scenes,(they do it only a little but it bugs me for some reason), and because this is suppose to be a horror film and it well isn't edgy sexy horror like other seduction cinema horror films(Tony marsiglia films you aren't getting here:Ie Dr Jeckle and Mistress Hyde this is not). This is not a parody film of witches of eastwick either. What this is then is a really good version of a sex movie that has some Good sex and a nice horror backdrop that really is just there to fuel some nice sex scenes. Here is the story. A man is having nightmares of three women who seduce him and then kill him, plagued by this he and his wife find the spot that is in his dream and then "by chance" finds the three women. The three women are witches. They give him and his wife a 'potion/spell' proceed to have sex with his wife and then each one of them have sex with him (sadly no sex with him and his wife and them together which would have been a hot scene :). The beauty of this movie is first off it is in WIDESCREEN. It looks great. The lesbian scenes are all threesomes(except for like a 10 second teaser scene), not as hot as some the other seduction stuff but not as tame as some of the stuff that is passing for erotica. Plus the hotub scene with Monique Parent is umm hot. I really liked this film. If your looking for some good old school erotic horror I would say pick this this up. the commentary is good as well. It reminds me more of what used to pass for erotic horror back say 5 to 10 years ago before it because "super light" softcore garbage like say sisterhood. Not that this is anything more then softcore but these girls actually make it look hotter like softcore films used to be. For the beautiful looking film and hot sex scenes and a great performance by Monique Parent as the wife, I suggest you give this film a try. It is also the nicest looking seduction film I've seen. I hope they start filming all of their films in widescreen.

Funny story, suitable for all ages, safe for small ones........2005-10-14
This is a fun little Halloween story about 3 sisters that are witches. Two of the sisters are incompetent and seem to get their spells a little mixed up. The other sister is in charge and very powerful indeed. The otehr two are trying to make pumpkin pies to throw at trick or treaters when they accidentally turn their sister into a pumpkin that rolls away. They are tempted to leave her like that since she is so mean, but decide to track her down and help her. In the meantime a young boy finds the withc-pumpkin and thinks she is a battery operated talking pumpkin and used her as the centerpiece for his Halloween party. In this story a witch needs her hands to do a spell so she can't save herself and now needs her sisters.
All in all a good story for the holiday, very funny, and no scary moments for smaller kids. Lots of laughs for the older ones, cute characters, good jokes and sight gags. I reccommend.
Funny Halloween Treat!.......2002-09-09
My sons ages 3 & 5 absolutely LOVE this video. It is their favorite Halloween video. They watch it every year, over and over as Halloween draws near. They think it is hilarious! The animation is good and the story line is very cute.

Description
The witch, sorceress, enchantress, the devil's consort--she has haunted the human consciousness and captured our imagination for thousands of years. The fear of the witch is woven deep within our psyche, but, surprisingly, there was a time when the witch was not a source of evil. Known for her ability to harness the hidden powers of nature herself--she was the caster of magical spells and the brewer of healing potions. What are her secret powers? And why did they become so feared and despised? Why would the witch be hunted down so mercilessly by the Inquisitor during the witch trials of Europe's Middle Ages and in the Puritan heartland of Salem, Massachusetts? The reasons lie buried deep in the ancient past. Join us on ANCIENT MYSTERIES and learn the surprising answers to the mystery of the witch.

A most informative look at the history of witchcraft.......2006-12-02
This 1996 Ancient Mysteries production basically provides viewers with an overview of the shifting cultural images of witchcraft over the past several millennia, with special emphasis on The Burning Years, which saw tens of thousands of women (as well as men and children) condemned, tortured, and executed for witchcraft. In historical terms, it is a well-made documentary, but it never really answered some of the questions I had expected it to take on - namely, the origins of so many common myths about witches (e.g., the broomstick, the black conical hat, the witch's familiar).
The roots of witchcraft reach down to the origins of human communities themselves, and the presentation makes the point quite well that the most ancient of witches were seen in a most positive light. In their earliest incarnation, they were wise women who could call upon their acquired knowledge of nature to heal the sick, banish evil spirits from homes, etc. The question then becomes: what happened to transform the witch into the most evil, dangerous of creatures? There is no clear-cut answer to this, but we do know that the Israelites laid down the law against witchcraft after settling in Canaan. Clearly, though, the final straw that sealed witches' fate to be looked upon as evil monsters and consorts of Satan was the Black Plague. When one out of every three individuals sickens and dies, it's all too easy to become hysterical and look for scapegoats. No one may ever expect the Spanish Inquisition, but the inquisitors certainly suspected witches of evildoing, eventually killing tens of thousands of individuals over the course of two whole centuries. They were helped along mightily by the publication of a book in 1487 called the Malleus Maleficarum; this was nothing less than a detailed guidebook for identifying and defeating witches, and it cemented witchcraft firmly with Satanism in the minds of inquisitors. The documentary makes clear just how barbaric and murderous a time this was in human history, with Inquisitors basically torturing a confession out of anyone even accused of the evils of witchcraft - indeed, new implements of torture were designed for this very purpose. As accused witches began being burned at the stake in droves (particularly in France and Germany), the image of the witch became inherently evil.
This murderous paranoia eventually spread to the New World, culminating in the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. The documentary offers its take on the origins of this infamous chapter in American history and offers theories on a possible political agenda behind it all. In the last segment, the presentation looks at the rebirth of witchcraft in the past century, offering some ideas as to why the practice of this ancient way of life emerged from the ashes of history so strongly in recent years.
It's all very interesting, but more in a historical than a psychological/sociological sense. The 45-minute format to the program doesn't allow for a lot of detail, but the overview itself is excellent and quite informative.

Three of the legendary movies that made Jack Nicholson who he is today. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; The Pledge; Witches of Eastwick
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding movie, might as well buy VHS.......2001-07-30
First off, the rating of 4/5 doesn't mean that I don't think this to be one of the greatest movies ever made. I do, and AFI ranked it 20 out 100 ever made. In 1975 it swept the big 5 Academy Awards (picture, actor, actress, director, screenplay). The movie is a 5/5 easy.
However, the DVD is basically the VHS on a different format. The video and sound look basically the same, and the special features are nonexistent.
Buy this movie if you like the movie, Jack Nicholson, Best Picture award winners, Milos Forman's direction, or seeing actors like Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd in early roles. The movie is MORE than enough to justify the price tag, but just don't expect any of the nice little extras that DVD's like this usually come with.

tacky at best.......2007-03-15
My husband and I have never been into anything like this before and were interested in checking it out. We looked around and saw this. The cover was a little shady, and the description seemed a little interesting but once we watched it we were very disapointed. The acting was cheesy at best. It was like an adult Hocus Pocus with Bette Middler. They were trying to kill people to stay young like that movie where they suck the life out of children to stay young. Totally not worth the three bucks I spent on it. I'll keep looking for something of interest. Bad acting... just aweful. Save your money.
Uniquely Erotic.......2005-05-05
This is a well-made erotic horror B-movie. If you are looking for award-winning acting, explosions, and elaborate sets, this movie isn't for you. That said, it is a super erotic movie with some very attractive girls, who look like your girl next-door, not like they came from a cosmetic surgery brochure. Director Marsiglia's movies usually present an original vision, not the cookie-cutter Playboy-movie variety. As the title suggests, the story involves a group of sexy lesbian witches running a beauty salon who seduce their pretty clients for ritualistic purposes. Invariably you'll have someone who finds out what they are up to and tries to destroy them. The eroticism is very atmospheric. The movie is not fast paced but creates a sexy aura. The girls look like they are actualing enjoying their work and each other. This movie together with G-String Vampire is some of the hottest stuff you'll find on DVD. Highly recommended if you like erotic girl-girl action.
COMPLETE PIECE OF GARBAGE!!!!.......2004-03-01
This is the biggest waste of money ever!!!!!!!! These girls arent even hot.
WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS FUNNY?.......2004-01-08
what the heck does this have in common with carlito's angels. I told my boyfriend to buy me carlito's angels for Christmas and he got me this movie too, he said they came together. Who thought this was anything like that movie, Who thought this was anything like a comedy? who decides these things. ridiculous
DOES NOT STAR MISTY MUNDAE.......2003-10-24
The only reason I had bought this DVD was for the beautiful Misty Mundae...but to my surprise this flick does not star Misty Mundae. If you are a Misty fan I suggest Mummy Raider or even the Lust in the Mummy's Tomb just for the Vibrating Maid featurette (she looks great nude but even better in stockings)
