More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People OscarĀ®-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honoring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 3. --Jeff Shannon

Spiderman 3 is an incredible movie with outstanding effects. The effets are a compliment to the amazing graphics!! Starring Toby Maguire as Peter Parker/Spiderman, and James Franco as the new Goblin/Harry Osborn. Which side will Harry and spidey be on joining. Will they reunite or rebel?

Was flint marko the true killer of uncle ben parker?who is the sandman? Many questions only to be answered if you see this movie yourself!!

This movie is unbelievable!! It is the best spiderman yet, I cant wait forthe 4th movie.Like i said the affects arent even comparible to the other spidermans. This is my favorite movie ever! Spiderman 3 waswas released may 4th with a rating of pg-13. It got this rating because of intense action violence. The movie lasted about two hours long.

I would probably reccomend this movie to anyone who likes the other spidermen. If you havent seen them, then if you like action you would love it!

3 out of 5 stars Liked it better when it was called Superman 2.......2007-06-08

There are so many people who laud this as the best comic book movie ever. I call shenanigans on that. Lifting the excellent plot device of Superman 2, Petter Parker decides to surrender being Spider-Man in order to find love and a life. Unlike the decision made by Superman, where he is forced to change who he is in order to embrace a normal life and find true love, Peter Parker selfishly gives up being Spider-Man to continue being who he was to begin with, a dork with school, girls, and work on his mind. The opening of the movie leading up to the central part of the story work quite well and I applaud the writing. Dr. Octopus' origin and goals, Harry Osbourne's continuing disdain for Spider-Man, and Peter Parker's angst all come across realistically and draw the audience in. Then they start to throw in the cliches and lame plot devices, a clear foreshadowing to what was to cripple the third installment: Peter's subconscious ridding him of his powers because deep down he doesn't want to be Spider-Man, the kid asking Peter where Spider-Man disappeared to giving ol' Parker second thoughts on surrendering the persona, etc. This is New York City. The belief that Spidey's removal would prove dire not only insults the true heroes of the city (firemen, police, etc.) it also stretches the realms of believability. With Superman, the world truly suffered when he surrendered who he was to become someone else. With Peter, it never really makes sense as to why he would want to be Spidey again, especially since his life improved once he surrendered the persona. The death of Doc Oc at the end was unnecessary as was Harry's pause when he could have killed Pete and finally gain vengeance for the death of his father.

Overall this was a fun movie. The best comic book movie, not quite. There is great writing and a good arc, but deep down it just rings hollow as to why Pete would want to remain Spidey.

DVD Features:

The first commentary track is by director Sam Raimi and a self-deprecating Tobey Maguire speaking in tandem, and producer (and Marvel CEO) Avi Arad and coproducer Grant Curtis speaking in tandem. They discuss a number of topics, including Raimi's memory of his excitement over Richard Donner's Superman and how the character of Black Cat had to be dropped from the film. The second commentary is by six members of the Oscar-nominated effects team, and one of their primary focuses is how Doc Ock's arms were achieved by a combination of puppetry and CGI.

The centerpiece of the second disc is a massive two-hour documentary that can be viewed all at once or in 12 separate pieces. It covers the development of the story, the visual effects, costumes, stunts, and sound and music. Three shorter featurettes cover Peter Parker's struggle between his personal and hero lives, Doc Ock, and the women in Spider-Man's life, and what's interesting is how they discuss those topics not just in relation to the movies but to the comic books as well. (For example, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy had a much greater impact in the comics.) There's a scene in which you can toggle among three different camera angles, and a gallery of 17 paintings Alex Ross created for the opening sequence. The sound and picture are spectacular, though only the Superbit edition has DTS. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Films.......2006-03-17

I really enjoyed the special edition versions of both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Both movies are great adaptations of the comic. The villians are great and Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina both give inspired performances. Tobey Maguire was a great choice for Spider-Man and he plays a convincing Peter Parker as well. I can't wait for Spider-Man 3, especially because Sam Raimi is again going to be the director. He has really grown as a filmaker. And I hope Bruce Campbell makes a cameo in Part 3, too.

5 out of 5 stars Two excellent films for one low price.......2005-07-20

Spider-Man (2002.) The first Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man 2 (2004.) The second Spider-Man film.

INTRODUCTION:
In 2002, the first of the live-action Spider-Man hit theatres. It's not likely that the film's director, Sam Raimi, had any idea just how successful his big-screen incarnation of the classic superhero would be. It drew in huge amounts of money at the theatres, and the DVD releases did the same. The sequel, appropriately enough, was even more hyped, and did even better. And now, both films have been combined into a single set! Read on for my review of the Spider-Man films.

STORYLINE:
Essentially, this set includes both of the films. The first of the two films explains how Peter Parker got bitten by a radioactive spider, and gained the powers that ultimately turned him into Spider-Man. In the first film, the villain is former head of Oscorp, Norman Osborn, who has been transformed into the Green Goblin by a chemical he was testing. The second film continues two years after the first left off, and features Spider-Man facing off against Doc Ock, a brilliant scientist who has gone mad due to a mixture of not getting the proper credit for his work and an electric shock that permanently grafted mechanical arms to his body. This time around, juggling the duties of being Spider-Man with work and school have made Peter Parker question whether or not he wants to continue the superhero lifestyle.

OPINIONS:
Both of these films flat-out rule. Seeing the first film turned me into a Spider-Man fan practically overnight. The acting and storyline are both excellent, particuarly Willem Dafoe's portrayal of Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin. Everything the first film did well, the second one does even better. I was amazed that they managed to create a sequel superior to the original film, since sequels rarely top the film that comes before them - but Sam Raimi does it here. These are great films, and the fact that they're together in one package only sweetens the deal.

DVD:
These are the standard DVD releases of the film, meaning each one has a bonus disc of material. There are a ton of bonus features, including commentary, cast and crew interviews, and assorted other extras too. The second disc included with the first film even has a listing of a ton of the old comic books, and the plotlines of them! That's my favorite extra on either of the discs. The other features are also excellent, and if you like the films, you'll agree they're worthwhile.

OVERALL:
I can't begin to express my satisfaction with these films. The cast and crew have creates two cinematic masterpiece, and I think you'll agree superhero movies don't get any better. Being able to get both movies in a single set makes the deal all the more sweet. These are must-watch movies, regardless of who you are. Even if you're not a big fan of the Spider-Man franchise, you may be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Spidey Rules!.......2005-02-07

I loved the first movie! And the second one was even better (in my opinion)! I owned the first movie in VHS and wanted it on DVD so I when the second one came out I got this double set. And I am pleased with it!

Spiderman fights with The Green Goblin in the first movie. Spiderman has to also deal with moral issues and the Green Goblin is related to one of Spiderman's close friends. Also you start the story of Peter and Mary Jane. In one you also see that Peter's Uncle dies. All of this gives a great plot and keeps your interest! There is more in the movie but that is your main plot themes. Spiderman is very heavy in morals and life lessons. It is also great as a story!

Spiderman 2 was even better than the first in my opinion. Why? I think that the characters had grown and the acting was better I also liked the fact that Mary Jane finds out Peter's secret! Doc Ock was also a strong role. It was great at portraying demons and the hardships of life and loss. There is so much in Spiderman 2. Peter has to tell his Aunt May a secret that will tear him and his Aunt apart. He also struggles with being Spiderman and even toys with the thought of giving it up (let you watch to figure out if he does). Mary Jane gets engaged and struggles with her friendship/love for Peter. And James Franco discovers secrets in his own life and in Peter's life. Makes for a great movie!

I can't wait until the third movie! I know this will be a series I will enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars this is what sequels should be!.......2004-12-17

Spider-Man 2 is what sequels should be! Sequeles are rarely even close to being as good as the first movie. But this is the best sequel ever! Infact, most movies should be this good. It may even be better than spider-man? Since they did not have to focus so much on introducing the charicters, they where able to write and produce a very good movie. It continues Peter Parkers dual identity and the problems he has with it. It introduces the next bad guy in the series. Doc Oc (Dr. octopus) whos evilness spins from his most recent scientific falure. Rent it, buy it, or get if for a gift today! - from www.thebijou.net movie reviews by a fan, not a critic.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best comic book superhero movie ever made.......2006-02-24

"Spider-Man 2" is the best comic book superhero movie made to date, and not simply by default. The story and screenplay come from Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (co-creators of "Smallville"), Michael Chabon (author of "Wonder Boys"), and Alvin Sargent (Oscar winner for "Julia" and "Ordinary People"), and more than any other film in this genre it is true to the character and what made him Marvel Comics' most popular superhero in the 1960s. I teach a unit on Spider-Man in my Pop Culture class where we compare the original Stan Lee & Steve Ditko stories to what is being published today and my students have to deal with the key elements of the comic book. This time around Sam Raimi has those elements nailed big time.

The story picks up two years after the first film, which is reprised through artwork by Alex Ross during the title sequences. Peter (Tobey Maguire) is now in college, working a part time job, fighting crime, and generally making a mess of everything. Being Spider-Man is a burden and it is beating Peter Parker down. He loses his job, his grades are slipping, and even his powers seem to be leaving him. He still loves Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), but all he can envision is a life where his enemies would threaten her life and he has to endure seeing her picture on billboards and posters all over New York City. It becomes clear that our hero is coming to a cross-roads in his life, but we have no idea what will be the final straw, as it could be anything from the bank foreclosing on the house of Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) or Dr. Curt Connors (Dylan Baker) flunking him to J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) really firing him from the "Daily Bugle" to Mary Jane ending up with some other guy (Daniel Gillies).

What made Spider-Man endearing was that he was the victim of such bad luck. With power comes great responsibility but you would think a guy could catch a break now and then. There is a point where a bruised Peter tries to make his way home and as he reaches out to steady himself against a parked car you KNOW that as soon as he touches it a car alarm goes off. Spider-Man endures a lot of slings and arrows in this film (e.g., Aunt May never told him how to do laundry) and all the while the gods just look down and laugh.

The Green Goblin was something of the ultimate villain for Spider-Man because he was the one who learned the web-slinger's secret identity. But the consensus of my students each semester is that Doctor Octopus is the best Spider-Man villain. Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) intends to make nuclear fusion work and is employed by Harry Osborn (James Franco), who dreams of making a fortune during the day and of killing Spider-Man to avenge his father at night. Of course things go horribly wrong, and the four metal tentacles that Octavius has created are now fused to his body and have driven him insane.

We have all seen the trailer for "Spider-Man 2" and the scene where Doc Ock interupts a potentially tender moment between Peter and Mary Jane by throwing a car through a window at them. This must happen over an hour into the film but it starts off a series of fantastic computer generated fights between the hero and the villain. The reason for this and why the pairing is so perfect is that Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus can both fight on the vertical axis as well as the horizontal. These two go at each other on the side of buildings and falling through the air as well as on top, on the sides, and through the middle of a subway train. Then you throw into the mix that Doc Ock can be carrying off someone Peter loves and still have three mechanical arms pounding away at Spider-Man. More importantly, when Spider-Man travels around by his webbing in this film it no longer looks like something we would expect from a Saturday morning cartoon.

But the conflict between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus is only one of a half dozen that provide the interpersonal web of problems closing in on Peter and the way they all fit together gives "Spider-Man 2" a weight hitherto unsuspected in superhero movies. This point is best evidence by the fact that Aunt May is major supporting character in the film just as she is in the comic book. There were always two women in Peter Parker's life and the one constant was always Aunt May.

I applaud the decision to make Otto Octavius a good man for once who becomes the victim of his own brilliance. His scientific discussions with Peter in their first meeting not only show his decency but also reveal to our hero the path he can take if he pursues science rather than crime fighting. After all, Otto is married to the lovely Rosalie (Donna Murphy), who is clearly the doctor's own MJ. Eventually Peter comes to the realization that he does not have to be Spider-Man.

I have some ambivalence about what is happening with Mary Jane, mainly because one of my favorite scenes in the comic book was when she finally confessed to a stunned Peter that she knew he was Spider-Man and could no longer stand the fear that he was going to get killed. But I appreciate the idea that Mary Jane gets to be there from the beginning in the movies (as she is in Marvel's "Ultimate Spider-Man") and that Hollywood does not have time to go through Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy to get to Mary Jane Watson Parker and the final shot of Mary Jane in the film certainly gives weight to her character and reinforces again the idea that this time they got everything right.

3 out of 5 stars Is this a worthwhile purchase? Pros and Cons .......2005-11-26

I have recently received this as UMD(Universal Movie Disc) as a present. The picture quality on the PSP is that of a mini Plasma Television so this is definitely about the same picture quality if not all aspects of the DVD version of this movie. I watched the opening titles for it and the illustrations proved crystal clear. Some drawbacks include the 4" inch screen of the PSP, which seems generous enough but really feels overly contained. The fastforward button on the PSP headphones and the right trigger of the controller are both convenient to use while watching this. This product is good enough if you want to watch a movie on an airplane or in your car but it will never replace a home theator system because it isn't that inclusive. The screen of the PSP isn't very big, the sound quality is so so.
Conclusion
1)If you really want to have portable video games and the prospect of watching Hollywood movies on the go intrigues you this will suit your needs just fine
2)If you are a movie buff, I would recommend buying the DVD version of this movie because of the special features it includes, you are better off with a portable DVD player because the screen size will be much bigger and the sound quality will be greatly enhanced
3)and if you can afford to spring for a laptop you should do so because it will suit all of your portable needs including movies, music and internet.

Looks like it is decision time between his Spidy personality and Mary Jane Watson.
Which does he chose?

Is there a way out of the dilemma?

This film is very slow moving and depressing for at least the first third. They are relying on the reputation of the first Spiderman to carry this almost similar story. When the action picks up that is all it is just action. You may want to fast forward through this as nothing is said or reveled that will have any bearing on the end.

While fans breathlessly await the fate of the computer-animated New Adventures of Spider-Man (it remains in limbo after being dropped by MTV in 2003), they can enjoy three episodes of its first season on this disc (culled from the 13-episode two-disc set, which is a better choice for completists). Mainframe Entertainment (which created the cult Saturday morning series ReBoot) and writer/executive producer Brian Michael Bendis (the Ultimate Spider-Man comic) give the venerable story a spin by placing Peter Parker (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris) in college alongside pal Harry Osborn (Ian Ziering) and longtime crush Mary Jane Watson (singer Lisa Loeb). As usual, Parker/Spidey must conceal his secret identity while wrangling a host of foes, which are a mix of ones drawn from the comic book and brand new enemies. Spider-Man fans seem firmly divided into "for" and "against" camps over the animation, which beautifully captures Spidey's web-slinging, but often looks awkward when depicting everyday movement. --Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Awkwardly not for kids........2007-06-24

It would be nice if this was labeled that it is intended for adults. I was dissapointed that I could not watch this with my kids. The swearing seems out of place...almost as if it was forced. The animation is dated, but I think still good for a T.V. show.

1 out of 5 stars Not for young children.......2007-06-14

My husband loves it, but it wouldn't be appropriate for young children due to language mostly.

5 out of 5 stars My Grandson is thrilled.......2007-06-02

when SpiderMan was created.

4 out of 5 stars In response of the "1 Star-Mother reviews".......2006-07-12

What parents need to realize is you can't just buy something for your children with no research at all. Just because something says "Spiderman" on it, doesn't mean it has to be for little kids. Just because something is animated doesn't mean it's for kids. Spiderman and many other characters were made a long time ago, and people that liked it then are older now. We would like to be able to enjoy OUR characters as well as share with kids new to them, but there is often a separation at some point where some things are made for newer viewers and children, and some to the mature audience that have become fans.

Wake up and realize animation can be for adults. It's not a toy, it's an art form. Maybe you should care a little more about your kids to take a minute to research stuff you get them instead of just grabbing something to get them off your back for 20 minutes.

Have a nice day.

1 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate for Children!.......2006-03-11

I agree with Jane! I bought this video for my four year old son because he's a Spider-man fanatic. Little did I know that this series is not meant for children. When we started to watch with him, I couldn't believe what I was hearing so I flipped the box over to find the rating (never dreaming there was one since I bought this in a toy store right next to a stack of Teletubbie videos!) There is a PGV rating on the back for violence but they don't tell you about the adult language as well as the sexual references. Needless to say we shut it off and tried to distract him with a more appropriate video for his age. I don't know if I'd let my 16 year old watch this!

5 out of 5 stars A Legend Comes to Life in two Masterpieces.......2006-09-14

40 years after his debut in Amazing Fantasy # 15 Spider-Man became the blockbuster movie followed a sequel starring Tobey Maguire as the teenage Daily Bugle photographer Peter Parker & the wall crawling, web slingling superhero Spider-Man as he battles Green Goblin & protects his love Mary Jane Watson, In Spider-Man 2 he battles personal problems with M.J. & with Harry who continues his veageance on Spider-Man for his father's death & battles the maniac Dr. Octopus. Two of the best superhero movies of all time, amazing, incredible, Spider-Man is one of the coolest crime fighters. Own the 2 Spidey movies & see the third installment as Spuder-Man battles the new Green Goblin, the Sandman & Venom. "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man"

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Spider-man fans!.......2006-05-15

These two movies are the newer versions of the spiderman movies and are excellent. The storyline is good and the special effects will just blow you away. I will explain a little about the two movies.

Spider-man:
This is the first movie where you can see how peter parker turned into this "human spider". The story is well-thought-out with a great plot. This movie is loaded with action and will keep you entertained throughout the whole movie without one boring minute. The ending is great and Peter will definitely be shocked when he finds out who the villian is. But will he defeat his villian? This movie leads you into the next movie. Definitely a classic!

Spider-man 2:
As for this movie it's just as good as the first, if not better. This one has more action and really pulls you in fast, even if you haven't seen the first movie. It also has some funny (actually silly) jokes that will make you laugh. But it can be frightening at times, especially for kids. The ending is very, very good and reveals a huge secret to.....well, can't tell you which characters, you'll have to watch it first.

Now, the only reason I didn't write much about what happens throughout the movie, is because I didn't want to spoil anything. These movies are full of surprises that can't be spoiled and will make you wanna watch them again and again.

Overall, Spider-man and Spider-man 2 are pure classics and everybody must own these superhero movies. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Highly recommended!

Ordinary People Oscar®-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life.

5 out of 5 stars The Extended Version Should Be Release as Theaterical.......2007-06-27

5 out of 5 stars Spiderman 3.......2007-06-15
