None of this conveys how funny the film is, or how deftly it flows from one scene to the next. Director Stephen Frears (Dirty Pretty Things) deserves great credit for that, and for the performances, and for the movie's marvelous sense of well-roundedness; you could see this movie and groan at the cluelessness of the Royals and their outmoded existence, or you might just sympathize with showing reserve in a world that values gross public displays of emotion. But either way, you'll marvel at Mirren, who makes the Queen far more alert and human than one might ever have imagined. --Robert Horton

Must See.......2007-07-04

What can I say that hasn't been said about this wonderful film? I was surprised at how narrow it was in it's scope; no Fergie or Andrew, not much else but the immediate royal family and the Blairs. That's what makes it great--it's a glimpse into the tiny world that they live in every day. Even the princes were more "background" than characters. Loved the whole "hunting" metaphor and the emotional reaction of the Queen to the stag. Ironic. All performances are spectacular; I personally thought Blair's wife was hysterical. The real footage that was interdispersed throughout the film was wonderful and brought back so many memories. Sniff. You'll love this film.

Boring - not what I expected.......2007-07-03

Everyone seems to truly love this movie - I was bored to tears. Although it gave a nice overview of the events of the week of Diana's death and was very informative, I found the acting to be dreadfully boring and the direction was lacking. James Cromwell is one of my favorite actors and even his performance was abrupt and overall did not flow well. This movie could have been a million times better if it had a better director.

The Royals Side of the Death of Diana Saga.......2007-07-03

I think the movie is fair and reasonably balanced. with the exception of Helen Mirren and James Cromwell the rest of the film is horribly mi-cast. I remember in 1997 during " that week " wondering how the British people could turn on the Queen given Diana's antics from 1993-1997. My heart really went out for her when she had to come back to Buckingham Palace and read the silly notes left on flowers by people. After all her years of service from the age of 15 fixing British army trucks during the blitz during WWII to the hard resconstruction years after the war, devoting herself 24 hrs a day to the British people , what was going through her mind as she faced those crowds that day and had to hear their applause for making her come down from Balmoral I can only guess. I think what Tony Blair says about Diana & the Queen in this film was awesome, How could The Queen lead the world in mourning of a woman who threw everything she offered to her back in her face and in recent years has spent 24/7 trying to destroy all those things she holds dear ?. I think Christopher Hitchens documentary "Princess Diana: The Mourning After", hit the nail on the head. One thing I did not like about this movie was the way the Queen Mother was portrayed. Every Royal book written about her portrays her as 100% opposite the way this movie showed her. The producers of The Queen need to read some WWII history.

Great film, good performances, but not fully true to history.......2007-06-29

Love Helen Mirren, (and loved her as a younger Elizabeth I in the HBO 2-part series as well, look for it!)and all the cast is excellent as well. But after reading Tina Brown's Chronicles of Diana and YES I know its' a rehash of what we all "know" of those years and that particular soap opera, but the last chapters of the book after Diana's death, are fascinating in that they are the same time period shown in "the Queen". According to people who were there, servants, officials and the like, the emotional sense of how the family reacted toward the young princes, William and Harry, has none of the coldness and emotional "lets just get on with life" attitude implied in the film and in the review, top, which says "Prince Phillip clumsily tried to help by taking the boys hunting." (paraphrased). Well, these boys had spent their summer vacations riding and hunting at Balmoral all their lives, and this is what they thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't something their stuffy old grandfather forced them to do. The book describes the entire Royal family rallying around the boys---Princess Anne, Charles' sister, brought her 20 yr old son and 16 yr old daughter, to help entertain their cousins, and she herself made a project of taking the very emotionally fragile Harry under her wing, and taking him riding and hiking out in the Balmoral hills alone. Charles pulled out family albums and spent time going over the past good times the family had had. Prince Phillip their grandfather, in particular, was very protective, showed "gruff tenderness" and did make sure they hunted,rode and kept active, as opposed to brooding and staying glued to the maudlin TV coverage. Actually, for the benefit of the boys, the Queen ordered all TVs and radios removed in the castle. The outdoors life is one the family is used to and enjoys. Those who criticised the Royals for having the boys there in Balmoral instead of exposing them to the hysterical crowds in London...well, I don't know which would give them more nightmares in years to come but I can guess. Also, other little tidbits in the book of that week were once when Prince Phillip came on the intercom when the decisions about the State funeral were being made and broke in, shouting, "those boys have just lost their mother...they are not a commodity..." Brown, the author quotes her source as saying "you could hear the voice of a real grandfather." Later, it was Prince Phillip, not Charles who talked the princes into walking in the moving spectacle of the royal men behind the cortege. He told the sobbing William, "If I walk, will you walk with me?" And during the long walk to the Cathedral, spoke quietly to the two boys of the famous sights they were passing, speaking softly the whole way there. All these vignettes, which would have made all the Royal more human, were left out of the film, good as it was, there was an agenda, that doesn't have to be spelled out. The Queen could admire a royal appearing stag, later shown beheaded...but her love and her husband's love for the grandsons was never shown, nor was the love of the whole family for the boys or for each other, despite all Diana had done to blacken the reputation of that family in the press. Not that they're perfect, just human.

Helen Mirren walks like the queen, talks like the queen, and ultimately quacks like her as well. Good performances.

Brilliantly conceived, superbly directed, and beautifully acted, Babel is inarguably one of the best films of 2006. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his co-writer, Guillermo Arriaga (the two also collaborated on Amores Perros and 21 Grams) weave together the disparate strands of their story into a finely hewn fabric by focusing on what appear to be several equally incongruent characters: an American (Brad Pitt) touring Morocco with his wife (Cate Blanchett) become the focus of an international incident also involving a hardscrabble Moroccan farmer (Mustapha Rachidi) struggling to keep his two young sons in line and his family together. A San Diego nanny (Adriana Barraza), her employers absent, makes the disastrous decision to take their kids with her to a wedding in Mexico. And a deaf-mute Japanese teen (the extraordinary Rinko Kikuchi) deals with a relationship with her father (Koji Yakusho) and the world in general that's been upended by the death of her mother. It is perhaps not surprising, or particularly original, that a gun is the device that ties these people together. Yet Babel isn't merely about violence and its tragic consequences. It's about communication, and especially the lack of it--both intercultural, raising issues like terrorism and immigration, and intracultural, as basic as husbands talking to their wives and parents understanding their children. Iñárritu's command of his medium, sound and visual alike, is extraordinary; the camera work is by turns kinetic and restrained, the music always well matched to the scenes, the editing deft but not confusing, and the film (which clocks in at a lengthy 143 minutes) is filled with indelible moments. Many of those moments are also pretty stark and grim, and no will claim that all of this leads to a "happy" ending, but there is a sense of reconciliation, perhaps even resolution. Mish mush.......2007-06-29

There are several different stories here only slightly related dealing with several different families in separate countries. Nothing that went into a whole. Some of the individual stories were touching. I particularly liked the Moroccan boys story. However overall it left me wondering what is the point of the story.

The acting is above average. Not surprising as it has some good actors. The filming is good.

Dry.......2007-06-26

Brad Pitt must be hard up for some money. Angelina's new kids must be costing him a fortune because this is the worst role he has ever taken. I think he's a great actor, love almost all of his other movies, but this one??? I'm not sure where to begin because, frankly I'm not sure what the story was about. Some lady, his wife or girlfriend, gets shot on a bus in Morroco or some place like that. Then some Mexicans try smuggling Brad Pitt and his lady friends children into Mexico... Border guards thought it was fishy that a couple of Mexicans were cruising around with some white kids so they busted the Mexicans and left the children to rot in the desert. Let's see... what else happened that made some sort of sense... This Mexican or Arabian fellow bought an illegal rifle and let his sons use it. They decided to use it to shoot at a bus, subsequently shooting Brad Pitts lady friend. And here's the kicker: a Japanese chick who was deaf gets naked for absolutely no reason! They show her at the club eaten some drugs, and next thing you know she's in some swank Tokyo condo gettin naked. I think that scene is what the whole movie was about and definitely worth the one star I gave it.

A powerful (but not concise) film.......2007-06-21

Babel, trying to imitate the wonderful style of Academy Award-winning Crash (Widescreen Edition), is a touching, thought provoking story of the world and its peoples.

The movie itself has an amazing premise--a husband, Richard Jones (Brad Pitt) decides to take his wife, Susan (Cate Blanchett) for an exotic vacation to Morocco. But things are hardly exotic, as they will soon find out. From Morocco the story transitions to California, where a Mexican-American maid is left in charge of the Jones' children while the couple are on vacation.

Babel continues to introduce new cultures as Mrs. Jones receives a wound to the shoulder while riding a bus through the deserts of Morocco. From there, a Moroccan family's role in the crime is unraveled, and the story of a Japanese deaf-mute begins.

This movie is truly touching, as all of the subplots intertwine and a feeling of bittersweet catharsis is felt.

This movie should be an absolute must for everyone; your life will be changed after watching this movie.

Farce.......2007-06-20

Let me start by saying that I really like this movie a lot. I think the point is very clearly stated in the preview, but not in the movie itself, although it's clear from watching the movie. The communication barriers we all deal with, and our prejudices against one another affect our lives, and make life hard, and painful, where there does not have to be any pain, or misunderstanding.
Cate Blanchett is a phenomenal actress, and does an outstanding job here, as the wife of Brad Pitt who gets shot in Morocco while riding on a bus. She is shot by two young boys, playing with a gun, and terroristic sirens sound off throughout the world. There are some other events happening in the movie too, with their children, and the original owner of the gun who is in China. Somehow they are all intertwined which makes for a compelling story. Each having their own struggles and issues, and communication related barrier. The original owner of the rifle has a deaf-mute daughter he has trouble communicating with after her mother commits suicide. Very well done, except one major complaint.
There are some very sexually explicit scenes involving children that were pretty much unessecary in making this a great movie. I personally, think it's tragic for people to accept having scenes like this in movies, that make it somehow acceptable. It's not ground breaking, it's just violating. And, I always thinks it's a bit of a farce when this is included in a movie that otherwise would be phenomenal on it's own merit. It just seems like a weak way to include some "shock" factor, when it's not needed, and dumbs down the movie. I could care less to see that, and didn't understand it's place in the movie, except to push the envelope. That could have been done in more valuable ways. Hence, why my rating is only a 3. But, otherwise, the storyline is great, and very interesting. I like movies that have a lot of moving parts, and stories happening in many places. Definitely one you should not miss.

The trouble with films like "Crash...".......2007-06-17

The film industry sees a success and realizes this is potentially a gold mine for more similar stories. Of course, they've got to add a twist--in this case, more languages, more locales and more cultures. As in the old saw: too many cooks spoil the soup, too many languages and locales spoil the story.

And--while there is always going to be a character or two who doesn't think in a movie, this one was riddled with folks who could have prevented their mishaps with just a little bit of common sense:

why would parents leave their kids in the care of a nanny who clearly isn't up to the task? I don't have children, but if I did, and I could afford a nanny, that person would be able to communicate and think much better than their employee

why would the illegal nanny take two American kids across the border?

why would the American couple go to a Muslim country, which is hostile where they spoke none of the language?

why would anyone let an intoxicated person drive--particularly at an international border?

One person's blunder can make an interesting plot device. Two people's blunder starts on comedy. Three? I can only shake my head so long at a movie before I am ready to give up. I made it to the end, but honestly I didn't think it was worth it. Very glad this was only a rental.

'Through a Glass Darkly'.......2007-06-22

It is hard to describe the plot of 'Donnie Darko' without making the movie seem repellant. 'Donnie Darko' is purposely ambivalent, and the causality of bizarre events is intriguing from the very start. The journal development is a retro trip in itself. Using footage of the Dukakis and Bush (I) debates before the 1988 election, the movie authenticates its setting of a high school near the end of the eighties. How they manage to mix nostalgia with an eerie tale with dark manifestations is a mystery, but they pull it off. Uniquely enigmatic with the memories they elicit, the movie has the effect of being a 'Twilight Zone' manifestation of 'Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.' (Aptly, the soundtrack draws from "Tears for Fears" instead of "Bow Wow Wow".)

Now about the story. Our titled tortured protagonist (Jake Gyllenhaal in another talented role) is undergoing psychiatric care complete with medication. The first hint we have that things aren't going well is when an ominous voice summons Donnie out of bed to meet him somewhere in the dark. What we discover there on a golf green is a six-foot rabbit, who, if his processed voice weren't so menacing, could only be dismissed with chuckles. (One can only describe the creature as a rabid or demonic 'Harvey'.) And, indeed, our best evidence of a demonic presence is when Donnie asks him later, "Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?" To which the voice quickly replies, "Why are you wearing that stupid human suit?") Here he announces to the disturbed adolescent that the world is going to end in approximately a month--Halloween 1988--to be exact. After that we get varying degrees of maladjustment with some foreboding events. Upon his return home he discovers he narrowly escaped death when an airplane part fell through his bedroom, leveling much of the house. A grateful Donnie will do anything for "Frank," who saved him from the debacle. From there a series of inexplicable events take place that leave one glued to the screen with magnetic interest.

'Donnie Darko' is a mysterious and disturbing alternative movie. Some of the draw comes with the acting. Keeping it real is no short order. The scenes of hypnosis are mesmerizing with Dr. Therman (played with expert delicacy by Katherine Ross) who tries to uncover Donnie's pathology. But it isn't that easy. In the meanwhile, Donnie, himself, seeks a teacher at his private school and an elderly woman down the road who has written a book about time travel. Dabbling with penetrating thoughts about predestination and the occult, Donnie's predicament is fascinating. Drew Barrymore, whose mere presence could singularly bring flashbacks of the eighties, is the producer and plays lively English teacher, Karen Pomeroy, a character who provides a pivotal place for social commentary. (Besides a mysterious mood piece, some satire is accessible.) On the staff is stalwart moral zealot, Mrs. Farmer, who is almost painted in clown white during her ignorant tirades. There's also preacher-like motivational speaker, Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze who makes his character creepy enough) who has a few skeletons in his own closet.

'Donnie Darko' deserves accolades for being so original. With effective performances that include the delicious novelty of having Donnie's sister played by real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, the elements speak for themselves. Nevertheless, the overall effect is not a satisying as the creativity, and the story leaves some gaping holes that, while like real life, are unsettling nonetheless. 'Donnie Darko' will fill a black hole for teenagers who will relate to some of Donnie's difficulties that beg for meaning. (Recommended for a different sort of movie adventure.)

Holy Cow!.......2007-06-14

Well, I was not expecting this when I watched it! It's amazing. It's not actually horrific, there's little blood and almost no violence. This movie is something amazing, something a little creepy and sweet that gets into you and makes you bawl like a baby... ok, makes me bawl like a baby, but hey, I was really tired, ok? It's complicated adn strange and surreal and beautiful and follows an inevetable chain to the end. You really have to pay attention and think - it's not gonna let you space out for a couple hours or miss bits and coast along. But it's easy to pay attention, it's so beautiful.

So - one of my favorite movies.

ok, i was 19 when i first saw this in the movies so it had a special impact. seeing it now in middle age it is not as powerful, but can still be appreciated on its own terms: well written, well acted, well directed, andof course that score makes one think (incorrectly) that the early days of rock-n-roll were some sort of era of musical magic.

Too Bad the sound track was "Improved".......2007-02-18

This was and is a great,great, movie the way it was "originally" conceived! Then, DVDs came along with better visuals and the "required 5.1 soundtrack." Because of it's popularity, Lucas had to "improve" the already wonderful soundtrack inorder to "repackage" his wonderful creation. Well, you guessed it, he, or his audio engineers, ruined the sound by "updating" it. Yes, the visuals are improved but the "new and improved audio track" is barely acceptable which is a shame as there is so much wonderful music in this film. ("He must have changed the editing monitor speakers he used originally to a "better and improved version." The "new" sound track is simply too "accurate" and "uninvolving" on a modern sound system and does not capture the emotions of the original event as well as what you can hear on the "old" VHS and LaserDisc versions. Sad, as the "new" soundtrack, while sounding ok , can distract on a quality home audio/video system these days. Stay with the VHS or LaserDisc versions if your lucky enough to have them.

Cary Grant's penultimate feature before retirement was this cheerful 1964 effort to overturn his career-long image of urbane sophistication. As the unshaven, messy misanthrope Walter Eckland, a World War II-era beach bum who monitors Japanese air activity for the Australian navy in exchange for booze, Grant makes a convincingly hard-bitten, hard-drinking antihero. Movie studios, by and large, avoid controversial subjects like race the way you might avoid a hive of angry bees. This really is a great movie that everyone living in the 21st century should watch. Race relations, not only in Los Angeles, but all over the world effect our daily lives and this movie show's it as raw and real as is the world we live in. Great actors, combined with a true to life story makes for one spectacular movie. I highly recommend it.

I watched this movie not really knowing what to expect. I found it a must-see for anyone who thinks that they are not a racist. You're going to change a lot of the things you think about others.

Recent reviewers are baffled by all the raves this very, VERY mediocre movie has gotten, by both the critics and the teeming masses. I think the reason for this is along the same lines as where an entire Danish village turned out to applaud the clothing taste of an Emperor who was, in fact, marching around in his birthday suit.

From the beginning, we were told how daring and provocative "Crash" was. How it made you really, and I mean REALLY think about racism in this country. How raw and natural the dialogue was. How important films like this are to break through the typical Hollywood stereotypes, and get folks to engage in some meaningful discourse.

OK....If you say so. To me, it seemed like a live-action version of the Aaron McGruder "Boondocks" comic strip, with actual words substituted for the squiggly lines, stars and exclamation points. "Crash" is a glimpse of real inner-city racial conflicts the same way that "Baywatch" shows real lifeguards at work.

Here's what I got out of it; (And I'm trying not to write any spoilers.)

1. Big black guy, who's well educated and successful, and browbeaten by his limousine liberal black wife for not being black enough. He discovers his inner "Mr. T", after being humiliated in at a traffic stop.

2. You got a white cop--one of the dudes who bounced on the big black successful guy, who is a racist because his working-class liberal father was a victim of affirmative action, and reduced to invalid status where he is at the mercy of a nursing staff that resemble clerks in the post office, with their compassion and girth.

This white cop sorta redeems himself in one of the most contrived movie scenes since Dorothy Oz woke up in Kansas, discovering her whole adventure was just a dream. (Doggone it! I hope I didn't ruin that film for anyone.)

3. We also have an East-Asian man, who acts utterly without a conscience in his endeavor to achieve the "American Dream"

4. Next we have the Hispanic guy. Young, hardworking, father of a cute little girl, and basically an angel in a wifebeater shirt.

Naturally....he's menaced by...

5. Beverly Hills housewife who's convinced he's stealing from her, and...

6. Paranoid Middle Eastern guy who's convinced he's stealing from him. (The latter conflict gets resolved in a scene that makes the white cop's redemption seem like a National Geographic documentary by comparison.)

Then there's Don Cheadle. That man can really wear clothes! Seriously, if he dies before he loses his physique, they should mummify him and use him as a mannequin in a department store. The Donster plays a Los Angeles detective with a hundred thousand dollar a year clothing expense allowance, who tries to solve the murder of this aspiring black country singer--dude, I'm serious--who in one way or another bumps into the rest of the characters.

Conspicuously absent was the black on Hispanic violence that makes up nearly ALL of the interracial fighting in Los Angeles. Why did the filmmakers do this? I mean, it's not like the TV stations don't talk about this sort of racial unrest several times a week.

Maybe the studio was scared that showing blacks and Hispanics slugging it out would incite real blacks and real Hispanics to start fights in theaters, the way they did in 1979 with the movie "The Warriors".

Or...maybe the script was written in 1979, and it took them 25 years to get it produced.

I gave it TWO stars instead of ONE, because of the black Country and Western guy. When you think about it, someone will need to fill that void when Charley Pride cashes in his chips and rides to that great big roundup in the sky.

My Oppinion: Crash is one of the best true life movies i've saw in a long time.

About the film: Crash is about how hard life is for ordinary and rich people. It has like 3-4 diffrent stories in it where all the chracters collid with each other in some way or another.

My Second oppinion: I thought the director did an excellent job on this movie and it had a great cast. It's a must see

Too Preachy.......2007-06-19

The story line was interesting enough that we didn't shut it off BUT it was so preachy that at the end we regretted watching it. If you want to be "schooled" then this is your movie but, personally I watch movies to escape, have fun and forget the day. You get the for about 45 minutes but, then the lessons begin and it gets annoying. To be honest it was a little predictable too but, whatever.... I don't always mind if I already know the ending if it's done well.

Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. Sure... it's dated; that's part of its charm. That said, it's one of the most madcap, zany comedies I've ever seen and is a "must have" for those of us old enough to appreciate the all-star cast of comic icons. Also, if you love old cars, the vehicles you'll see in this movie are worth the price of the DVD alone. Pure entertainment.

This is a very funny movie with an all star comedy cast. From Jimmy Durante "kicking the bucket" to the fire escape at the end, you'll laugh all the way through. The number of comedy stars in this movie are almost overwhelming. I personally think Jonathon Winters steals the movie.

I first saw this movie with my father when i was a young boy for some reason it never left my mind, so out of shear curiosity i purchased this movie and fell in love with again.

I later found out that there are a few of us that love this movie so much that they have taken pictures of all those wonderful places and made a montage of before and after pictures showing the "Big W" and the back yard where it once stood.

In conclusion i just loved this movie. What more can i say Oh btw Amazon got the movies to me in less than a week, isn't that great.

After building up the duo's popularity through recordings and several performances on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd--as "legendary" Chicago blues brothers Jake and Elwood Blues--took their act to the big screen in this action-packed hit from 1980. Have you ever had one of those days where you feel tired and alittle bored and depressed? You need a pick-me-up. If that is you, then don't waste anytime. Pop this in your DVD player and start feeling happy. This movie is the purfect cure for a bad day. It makes you laugh hysterical. It is just plain fun. The comedy, the music, the romance, the ridiculous car chases. It's got everything for everybody. And it's done perfectly. Dan and John have fantastic chemistry together and there both remarkably funny. the whole cast is grade-A. How can you go wrong with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Candy, Cab Calloway, and director John Landis? You can't. The music is so good, you can't help but dance alittle bit. It's way better then what they call music today. And how can I forget: the car chases. The car chases in this film are the best I have ever seen. THIS IS NOT EVEN A ACTION MOVIE! That shows you how great this movie is. It is wall to wall fun. It's gotta be the greatest musical ever. It's definetly in my top 5 for my favorite movies ever. Everytime I watch it, it makes me smile. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. I think "Barbarella" is best appreciated at a midnight showing with people shouting rude things at the screen. The flick is undermined by the lunkheaded direction of Roger Vadim. Did anybody explain to this guy that he was making camp? Also on display is some of the most garish art direction ever. Austin Powers would vomit. I did dig the shag carpeting in Barb's spaceship, though. What redeems this enterprise is the acting, not least Jane Fonda in the title role. Jane, consummate actress that she is, did understand the tongue-in-cheek aspects of the film. Jane's striptease over the opening credits is something to write home about. Good contributions are also given by David Hemings, Milo O'Shea, Anita Pallenberg, and Ugo Tognazzi. Venture into this flick for it's curiousity value and nothing else.

Jane Fonda stars in a title role of this famous cult sci-fi sex comedy as a space beauty in the variety of skimpy outfits. She looks great - all male (and female) creatures on a strange planet SoGo (Sodom and Gomorra?) drooled over her.

"Barbarella" (1968) directed by then Fonda's husband, Roger Vadim may be the silliest, the cheesiest, the campiest movie ever made but it is certainly one of the most entertaining comedies I've seen and is Fun with the capital "F". It is also very "pretty - pretty".

So, what do we have here? In the year 40.000, Barbarella "the Queen of the Galaxy" is sent by the President of Earth in search of the disappeared scientist named Durand Durand (finally I learned how the band got its name.) While looking for him, her space ship crashes on the planet Sogo where she encounters Pygar the Blind Angel (yes the man with the wings), Professor Ping - kind scientist (the celebrated and the finest mime artist Marcel Marceau in the rare speaking role), Dildano (David Hemmings of "Blowup") - the revolutionary who plots to overthrow the evil empire, Marcan - the barbarian who introduces Barbarella to an old fashioned love making (the advanced one is achieved by taking a pill and holding hands - welcome to the brave new world!) and The Great Tyrant - dangerous and very attractive ruler of Sogo (Anita Pallenberg, the object of Mick's, Brian's and Keith's desire and Mrs. Keith Richard at the time) who calls Barbarella "pretty-pretty" and invites her to come and play.

Fonda is quite good as a naive Barbarella and sometimes there is such an ironic and intelligent smile on her face that it should not surprise you what a fine actress she would eventually become.

With a script by Terry Southern, author of Candy, this is the ultimate floss on the icing, and a totally memorable movie masterpiece. Maverick mad scientist invents a WMD and plans to rule the galaxy! Defeated by innocence, incompetence, sweetness and excessive sex! Not forgetting a flashy fashion quick-change every few minutes. What outfits! Very influential, and one of the milestone highlights of movie history, the full recognition of its unique merits lies in the distant future; but some of us, with remarkable prescience, can actually see that far ahead. All those sad, dull dumbos, who think it is just silly and camp, bad and boring, will be positronically erased and forgotten as the years, the centuries, the millennia and the stars roll by. Who needs to wait for the 41st millenium with this dvd in their collection?

A Favorite Film. many layers and subplots, some more obvious than others.The characters are so believable I am suspended in the Italian Country side during WW11. Incredible sets and cinematography immerse the eye. It touches every sense..from ink on textured paper to the tinkling of tiny bottles on a camels back. Letting us soar in the air then dip into a "Swimmers Cave" aa we feel the passion in unspoken resonance and grief in a place called "Palace of the Winds". A love story within a love story, so entwined that they become one tale of many loves. Timeless.

Even though it won 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and despite the fact I've been fond of Anthony Minghella's work in the past...I wasn't expecting much from "The English Patient." It's just really not my kind of movie. It takes place during World War II; a majority of the film takes place in the desert, etc. Actually, it's a fantastic movie with fantastic performances that is not only a great film but very entertaining as well.
