Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Description

In TOP GUN, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a talented training pilot in an elite U.S. school for fighter pilots. When he stumbles upon some MiG's over the Persian Gulf, and his wingman panics, Maverick cleverly talks him through the situation to safety. Consequently, he is moved up in rank and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he has several conflicts with other students while trying to live up to his deceased father's reputation. Unable to cope with the death of his best friend, and fellow pilot, Goose, Maverick contemplates dropping out, but follows through with his dream and ultimately becomes one of the "best of the best."

this is a movie to leave feeling good, patriotic if you're an American, proud if you simply like the feeling of understanding a small portion of what it means to defend good.

Its irrational, illogical, and sometimes silly.

But it is exceptionally well shot, the characters although thinly developed are great to look at, the music is perfect for this venue, and as stated in the title, the first 3 or so minutes on the deck of the "Big E" (this was shot on the carrier Enterprise) are some of the best ever, matching emotion, cinematography, music, and story in a way that simply makes you want to watch the rest of it no matter what.

Get a soda or a beer, some popcorn, and prepare to smile. Or maybe even cheer.

We purchased this set and checked the ratings for viewing by our children. Don't let the PG rating fool you into thinking "Airplane" is okay for kids!!! My 9-year-old had the surprise of his life (as did I!) when a nude woman crossed the screen. Took days to wipe the smile off his face. Now his brother wants to watch...

This film is proof that an excellent cast cannot rise above inferior scriptwriting, directing and editing. Most scenes of this movie struggle against a script that sacrifices character development to the conveying of information. Mercifully, this is most blatant in the first 10 minutes of the movie in which choppy editing jerks the audience from scene to scene in a series of pogo jumps that instruct us on the childhood aspirations and early professional career of the protagonist, Gerald Bull. The ticker tape of facts continues through what must be the most leaden performance of Kevin Spacey's filmography, as he intones yet more information needed to convince the viewer that this is surely a very exciting film. Add to this the director's dispiriting decisions to have Arab characters speak to each other in English, and to have pivotal moments preceded far in advance by crescendos from the orchestra, and we can only be thankful that the flim provides, at the very least, a useful history lesson.

watch this movie closely..It will show you all you need to know of the world of international espionage and those who play the great old game...This Movie truly expains how enemies are not really all that bad and how ones friend can be the monster lurking in the shadows..In my opinion the movies highlights the closing heyday of the Reagan-Bush international crusades and how the foot soldiers in the Intelligence field work ferverishly to fufill their masters agenda....And how a goverment can use, abuse, discredit and discard you if you refuse to play the game their way..This movie had a great cast, and was a real diamond in the rough. It has 2 parts.It highlights the genius of Gerald Bull,, and shows the darkside of a political agenda..

Here's to the engineers.......2005-08-23

As an engineer's son, I have never seen a better portrayal of an engineer's enthusiasm for new problems and new challenges. In one unforgettable scene, Frank Langella brought to the screen for the first time in my opinion what can only be called, "the-joy-of-development."

Too often films that deal with invention focus on that moment when the problem comes together and is solved. What they fail to recognize is the first step, when the men and women are looking at the challenge ahead, has even more emotional potential.

Thankfully the writers and actors in this film did not forget this human truth.

The cast is excellent. The script is uneven, but the only reason this is obvious is because instead of staying mildly good throughout, like most made for cable films, this movie is mildly good with occasional scenes of brilliance; such as almost any moment what Langella or Spacey grace the screen.

If you are an engineer or just have one as a friend or member of the family, see this film. It's a wonder.

A wonderful film.......2004-02-09

This wonderful film tells the story of Dr. Gerald Bull, a genius engineer who modeled his `superguns' after the German Hengersutzer from WWI. His theory was that large guns could deliver payloads into space at more economical levels then rockets. Unfortunately his contracts were cancelled with the Canadian government and he became a freelance defense artillery expert, helping the S. Africans and Israelis and finally being hired by the Iraqi's in the 1980s to build a giant gun capable of hitting Tel Aviv or Tehran from Baghdad. This wonderful film portrays Saddam Hussiens regime in its heyday, when it was not a pariah and the Americans supported it. Wonderful acting by Alan Arkin, who plays an intelligence officer assigned to tracking Bulls movements in the West compliments the film. Simply a gem, a diamond in the rough, you will not be dismayed by this great subtle historical film.

A look at the embattled U.S. Secretary of Defense, who came under fire by critics early in his tenure but then became a leading spokesman for America in the wake of September 11. Having served in Congress and as Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford, Rumsfeld is a veteran of Washington politics, and despite all the challenges to America, "Rummy", a former naval aviator, remains optimistic about the nation's future.

This work was very gushy. I wonder if Rumsfeld required that in order to get him and his wife to agree to interviews. It was amazing to see Rumsfeld with thick, black hair when I am so used to seeing him with thinning, gray hair.

On the one hand, one learns of all the powerful men that hold Rumsfeld in high esteem. He has had a number of impressive jobs in the federal government. However, with the exception of his wife, every person interviewed was a white male. This very much points to the Republican Party's weakness as a non-diverse group. The late President Ford is here and some may weep seeing him speak again. I giggled every time Henry Kissinger spoke because I'm immediately reminded of "The Simpsons" episode in which he left his eyeglasses in the toilet.

The documentary concludes with someone saying, "Rumsfeld will be around when the rest of us are gone." This points to how dated the work is. After the Republicans' broad-based defeat in the 2006 elections, President Bush instantly accepted Rumsfeld's resignation. Goliath has lost to David. The Biography series often tacks on new endings when new events happen. They did it with Strom Thurmond and they need to do it with Rumsfeld.

I really think the Biography series may have a tacit, right-wing agenda. The gushiness of this work may be a sign of that.

The Naked Gun
David Zucker--of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television's Police Squad!--directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show. Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective's badge. The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). Yes, that's O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh

Top Secret!
In between the disaster movie satire Airplane! in 1980 and the hardboiled cop show parody The Naked Gun in 1988, the comedy crew of Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker put together a picture that's almost as funny as their better-known hits. Top Secret! sends up spy movies and cheesy teen rock & roll musicals. Val Kilmer stars as swivel-hipped American rocker Nick Rivers, a sort of blonde Elvis whose secret weapon is Little Richard's tune "Tutti Fruitti." On tour behind the Iron Curtain, Nick strikes blows for democracy overtly and covertly, with his music as well as his espionage skills. In short, this is a very, very silly motion picture. Some great gags, including a subtitled scene in a Swedish book shop, and an inspired bit with a Ford Pinto that not everybody may get anymore. (The Pinto, you may or may not recall, was notoriously prone to gas tank explosions when rear-ended.) --Jim Emerson

Airplane!
The quintessential movie spoof that spawned an entire genre of parody films, the original Airplane! still holds up as one of the brightest comedic gems of the '80s, not to mention of cinema itself (it ranked in the top 5 of Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 funniest movies ever made). The humor may be low and obvious at times, but the jokes keep coming at a rapid-fire clip and its targets--primarily the lesser lights of '70s cinema, from disco films to star-studded disaster epics--are more than worthy for send-up. If you've seen even one of the overblown Airport movies then you know the plot: the crew of a filled-to-capacity jetliner is wiped out and it's up to a plucky stewardess and a shell-shocked fighter pilot to land the plane. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are the heroes who have a history that includes a meet-cute à la Saturday Night Fever, a surf scene right out of From Here to Eternity, a Peace Corps trip to Africa to teach the natives the benefits of Tupperware and basketball, a war-ravaged recovery room with a G.I. who thinks he's Ethel Merman (a hilarious cameo)--and those are just the flashbacks! The jokes gleefully skirt the boundaries of bad taste (pilot Peter Graves to a juvenile cockpit visitor: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"), with the high (low?) point being Hagerty's intimate involvement with the blow-up automatic pilot doll, but they'll have you rolling on the floor. The film launched the careers of collaborators Jim Abrahams (Big Business), David Zucker (Ruthless People), and Jerry Zucker (Ghost), as well as revitalized such B-movie actors as Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Leslie Nielsen, who built a second career on films like this.
