A classic auto-racing movie starring Steve McQueen, Le Mans puts the audience in the driver's seat for what is often called the most grueling race in the world. The French auto race Le Mans is a 24-hour affair through the French countryside, a demanding ordeal for any driver. McQueen (Bullitt, The Great Escape) plays the American driver, locked in an intense grudge match with his German counterpart even as he wrestles with the guilt over causing an accident that cost the life of a close friend. McQueen is his usual stoic magnetic self, and the racing sequences are among the best ever committed to film. A solid character-driven story combines with raw visceral power to make Le Mans a rich tapestry of action and thrills. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars "Le Mans".......2007-07-01

The only movie made about motor racing to this date. McQueen was excellanr driver, along with Peter Revson almost won 12 hours pf Sebring while McQueen driving in leg and foot cast due to broken foot in eariler motorcycling racing racing accident.

5 out of 5 stars Pour les Hommes Normale du Monde.......2007-06-06

I almost want to accuse Steve McQueen of making a self-indulgent film as driving fast cars was his passion; however, using the word "self" doesn't make much sense given how popular the automobile is with the male half of the global population. Cars are to men what shoes are to women. If you are a man and you you aren't interested in fast cars you are probably either 1) not of the majority's sexual orientation or 2) from a part of the World where they don't have them (Moomba maboday jambaa car?).

"Le Mans" is, for most of the film, more like a documentary than fiction. You will feel like you are watching the actual race rather than a fictionalized story set around the race. REALISM is the word.

McQueen plays an American driver, Michael Delaney, on the Porsche team whose main rival in the twenty-four hour race is a German on the Ferrari team. Delaney is haunted by the memory of a crash that killed an Italian driver the year before.

There isn't much dialogue in the film. One notable quotation occurs after the widow of the Italian driver asks McQueen's character why driving is worth the risk: "A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing is important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

Don't expect wives or girlfriends to get into this one...

5 out of 5 stars The Man Delivered on His Promise.......2007-05-10

To complain that LeMans is short on dialog is like criticizing a butterfly for not having a beak. It's taken more than 30 years, but Americans are finally beginning to appreciate what Europeans and ardent racing enthusiasts around the world have known since they first viewed LeMans: it's an excellent motor racing film. This emerging realization is due to several things, I think. One is that over the past three decades, even the densest moviegoers have had to recognize McQueen's disdain for dialog in ALL of his films. Unlike actors who lobby to have additional lines written for their characters, McQueen preferred to act through gestures, expressions and body language. He was all about presence, and Michael Delaney exudes all the presence of Frank Bullitt and Thomas Crown. Another reason for the growing respect for LeMans the movie is the comparative shallowness of the charade that passes for motor racing today. LeMans was shot on the cusp of the corporatization of the sport. It was well on its way from a gentleman's pursuit, that train had left the station in the mid-1960s, but the earnings of world-class drivers when LeMans was made were still comparable with CEO, rather than rock-star compensation. Importantly, it still took huge balls and a lot of ability to drive a car like the Porsche 917 the length of a 3.5 mile straightaway at 240 mph, at night, in the rain, like Vic Elford did in 1970. Mulsanne has long since been shortened, the number of co-drivers on a single LeMans team has grown from two to your average college fraternity, and drivers need to bring a lot less to the game in terms of guts and skill than they did in 1970. LeMans is not without its blemishes, and by all accounts it was a nightmare of a project, but McQueen delivered what he said he would - a film that did justice to race drivers and racing.

4 out of 5 stars For Porsche Lovers.......2007-04-05

A movie that will entertain racing fans, car lovers, and especially Porsche owners and fans. Otherwise, significant dialog is missing from the movie("Porsche must win at Le Mans...", "Vrooomm, Vroomm", "Porsche wins at Le Mans!"). YES!!! Vrooommm, Vrooomm!!!

A Porsche Owner

3 out of 5 stars An OK movie.......2007-03-30

This movie is OK as long as you're a racing fan. I thought the acting and plot was a little lame, but the racing sequences are great. It's worth buying just for that.

Description

When racing fans gathered in northwestern France for the 74th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, they knew they would be treated to a spectacle of drama, excitement, history, and always a surprise or two. The 2006 editionof the world¹s premiere endurance race had all of those elements and more, and this official review gives you the best seat in the house.

Before the race, it would have been an easy prediction to say that the Audi Sport teams would be on the podium at the end of the day with one or even two cars. But, this year the teams switched to the diesel-engined R10¹s, causing some to re-think those predictions. When the checkered flag fell at 5PM on Sunday however, it was the No. 8 Audi Sport Team Joest R10 of FrankBiela, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner in first place and their sister No. 7 car driven by Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish coming in third. This gave the Audis their 6th outright victory in the last seven years and a spot in the history books as the first diesel to win Le Mans.

The Pescarolo Sport team of Eric Helary, Frank Montagny and Sebastian Loeb made a great showing, running an efficient race in the final hours and placing second in the LM P1 class.

The other classes saw some great action as well. The GT1 class saw the experience of the No. 64 Corvette come through in their battle with the Aston Martins. The No. 25 RML Lola AER led the LM P2 class for almost the entire race in a field that was particularly tough this year. And in GT2, the podium was shared by three different marques, with Panoz, Porsche, and Ferrari taking the respective first, second and third place honors.

You¹ll see coverage of all the pre-race activities, the test weekend and final qualifying, meet the drivers and their teams, and share the experience of the racing fans that come to witness the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

3 out of 5 stars Le Mans 2006.......2007-01-17

This DVD is from a new production company and is not as good as the 2005 Le Mans review DVD. However, it does keep to the same format of showing the prerace activities and a good recap of qualifying. Well worth it if you enjoy sports car racing.

5 out of 5 stars The best .......2007-01-10

For anyone who enjoys motor racing.See it for your self .Documenting in satisfactory detail the news, events and people of the 2006 24 hour of le mans, this DVD is a must-have for any endurance race aficionado.

2 out of 5 stars A definite step backwards.......2006-12-16

While the 2006 Le Mans DVD is similar to previous incarnations, the extremely poor video quality due to a large amount of distortion and pixelation, definitely makes this the worst of the Le Mans DVDs.

Content-wise it's the same stuff: Plenty of testing and qualifying highlights with a little more than an hour devoted to the actual race itself. However, the poor picture quality makes this DVD seem almost like a VHS tape. The distortion and pixelation, at times, is hideous and it really draws away from the pleasure of watching the race. If you compare this DVD side-by-side with Le Mans DVDs covering the 2002 and 2003 races, the 2006 edition is definitely worse.

Another complaint is that the DVD covers testing and qualifying highlights twice -- adding plenty of repetition to the DVD's 140-minute run time. This has been an ongoing habit for the producers of this series, who crammed in this highlight show that originally aired on SPEED channel prior to its live Le Mans race coverage. This preview show, which takes a little more than an hour to cover testing and qualifying, leads into the real start of the DVD, which then goes right back into more testing and qualifying highlights.

The lack of special features and in-car cameras is another disappointment. In the 2005 DVD, the producers included special feature in-car cameras for the first time (even though the DVD had some slight pixelation problems). In the 2006 version, there are no special features and the in-car camera footage is no more than a couple of seconds for each car it shows. It would have been great if there was a full, in-car lap onboard the Audi R10 Turbo Diesel.

Overall, I would still recommend this DVD to any avid Le Mans fan since it is the best record of a race which saw Audi triumph with a diesel-engined car for the first time in the race's 74-year history. It also does a good job showing all of the race action and all of the drama and glamour that makes up the annual festival of endurance on the Circuit de la Sarthe. It's just disappointing that the picture quality is so poor.

4 out of 5 stars A solid review of the 2004 race.......2006-01-17

For those of us who couldn't make the trek out ot Le Mans to see Audi win for the fourth time, this well-done review will allow you to witness one of the closest finishes in Le Mans history. Like previous versions of this DVD, the 2004 review has comprehensive coverage of testing, scrutineering, qualifying, off-track news, the historic race and the 24-hour classic. It documents in strong detail the battle among the favorites for overall victory (Audi UK, Audi Japan GOH and Champion Audi)and does a commendable job highlighting the GTS battle between Corvette and Ferrari. The DVD also does a good job covering former World Rally Champion Colin McRae's transition from rally to GT driver. The only disappointing feature is the two chapters devoted to qualifying, adding a big chunk of repetitive information to the DVD. Like the two previous incarnations of this DVD, qualifying is covered twice, making it a little frustrating to watch straight through when you already know what's going to happen. For a big Le Mans fan like myself, its a small annoyance, but other viewers may feel a little cheated since their not getting the most from the 150 minutes of run time. However, that aside, it is a strong review and I would recommend it to any sportscar or Le Mans fan.

5 out of 5 stars Another job well done........2005-09-05

This DVD is another "must-have" for sports car racing fanatics.
Not everyone can make the trip to see the annual 24hrs of Le Mans
in France. But this DVD is a good overveiw of the famous race.
I also like the addition of the "historic races", which run before the main race starts. My only complaint, is, I want it to be longer. I don't think you will be diappointed with this disk.

Conquering the most famous motor race in the world is a real test of speed, skill and endurance. Man and machine have to perform to the highest standard, lap after lap, hour upon hour as they are pushed to the limits and beyond in this gargantuan event. Over 220,000 spectators traveled to Le Mans to witness this classic event, which once again did not disappoint. In this review you can relive the very best highlights together with action from the pits and informed commentary. The cameras have missed none of the decisive moments that settled the final order for these highly charged racing machines (which included MG, Bentley and Morgan, Chrysler, Porsche, and Ferrari). However, after 3,000 miles of flat-out driving it was the all-conquering Audi Sport Team Joest who took the checkered flag once again with an historic hat trick for drivers Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emmanuele Pirro. Capturing the atmosphere and sense of occaision that only the Circuit de la Sarthe can provide, this official review is a magnificent souvenir of motorsports history in the making. And, as an extra bonus, we've included almost a full hour of footage from the test weekend in May, driver and owner interviews, and the qualifying laps from the days leading up to the race. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good review of the 2002 Le Mans spectacle.......2006-02-04

Profiling Audi's return to the top step of the podium for the third consecutive year, this comprehensive review of the 24-hour classic French endurance race is a must-have for any sportscar racing fan. The DVD covers the Le Mans testing weekend, scrutineering, practice/qualifying, and the race itself in great visual and audio detail. It also provides mini-features on Audi's recent dominance in the race with its pace-setting car -- the Audi R8 -- and the DVD also does a good job going over the on-track changes the organizers made to the historic course since the 2001 race.
However, there are some slightly disappointing features that hamper the quality of the DVD. First off, when the DVD starts, it goes straight into testing weekend coverage without going to a menu screen first. This is a small annoyance, especially if you want to jump to a specific chapter. Second, the DVD shows qualifying highlights twice, repeating some of the same information over again.
However, these are small flaws and true fans of Le Mans won't mind the rather tiny inconviences to relive the 2002 race.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love LeMans.......2004-12-22

You'll really enjoy this documentary of the 2002 race, it gives you all the lead up to the event, the sights, the sounds, and a sense of the length of time it takes to compete. For me, this was a special find because I attended the 2002 LeMans race and this was a great addition to my travel photos. This particular race was blessed with great weather, no rain, no high winds, perfect. While the Audi's ran away with it, there was so much to enjoy. The Viper/Corvette battle was fun to watch - the Vettes dominated in the end. The Ferrari was a surprise early on. The French were actually making a movie during the race and had two cars entered just for the film. I have not located the film just yet, but I will buy that too when I can.
I spent the entire night driving from one location to the next to get differnt views of the race (a very nice aspect of this race on mostly public streets) and this film captures great action at many spots. My seat was right at the finish line, so the view of the finish on this film brings it all back for me. Like I said, if you like LeMans style racing, if you have a tolerant family (or your own viewing area) you will enjoy this film a lot...and who knows, it may make you want to travel to LeMans and experience it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-07-11

If youre intersted to the speed and sights of lemans, this is the video you want to buy. It has a lot of moments captured before the race including the test days of may and qualifying. Its a great way to see cars such as the great 3 car Audi R8 squad, the lone but beautiful Bentley Speed 8, the very loud Panoz, and the wonderful engine notes of the Judd engine powered Courages and Dome. I think this DVD is something of a historic artifact to be collected as it is the last days running of the most prestigious team lemans has recently seen the factory backed Audis. The sight and sounds are great. This is for every fan who just wanna sit back and watch LeMans at home.

Description

The official film of the Le Mans 24 Hours 2003 records the triumphant return to the winner's podium - after 73 years - of Bentley, the famous English marque that participated in the first ever race back in 1923. The film tracks the team's progress from scutineering through to it's victory parade on the Champs Elysees, featuring interviews with the drivers of both Bentley cars at key points during the race. Also highlighted this year are the GTS class-winning Veloqx Prodrive team, whose Ferrari 550 Maranellos are seen being prepared in England, and the Nasamax entry in the LMP 900 class, the first renewably-fuelled car to compete in a premier event like Le Mans. In terms of race action, it's the Audi Sport UK car that provides the first real drama, as Frank Biela runs out of fuel after missing his re-fueling stop. We see the Audi Sport Japan and Champion Racing Audi's engage in a desperate battle to stay out of the pits and on terms with the Bentleys, only to fall behind as the English marque's near flawless race unfolds. In the GTS category, the Ferrari Maranellos out-pace and out-last the Corvettes while in the GT, the Porsche 911 GT3s triumph over the Ferrari 360 Modenas. In the closing stages of the race, we witness the tremendous scrap further down the LMP 900 field between a Panoz, the Courage Judd and the Dome Judd. Elsewhere, we follow the drivers and teams through the May test weekend, the two race week practice sessions, the drivers' parade, and on the morning of the race, a special Le Mans Legends event featuring cars that raced at Le Mans between 1959 and 1971. NTSC, Region 1.

4 out of 5 stars A great review of Bentley's triumph.......2006-01-17

After three years of Audi domination, it was great to see an old racing marquee like Bentley win Le Mans and this review documents the race in fine fashion. Like last year's DVD, the 2003 version covers testing, scrutineering, qualifying, off-track news and the famous 24-hour race itself in solid detail, quenching any sportscar racing fanatic's thirst for Le Mans action. I would recommend this DVD to any sportscar fan.

5 out of 5 stars LeMANS-1971.......2005-03-07

This cult classic has been ramp so hard when it came out.People..what they saw was a racing movie.McQueen deliver the goods all the way.And himself, raced in the movie. This was a dream he had, like John Wayne's dream to make.."THE ALAMO".And both wonderful actors dream died with them.Sure..LeMans could have been made a love story out of it.But what the hey..James Garner made.."Grand Prix".And Paul Newman made."WINNING".But McQueen..he wanted us to feel the passion of racing behind the wheel..& HE DID just that.I have it on dvd..watch it still & happy that he made it.Even the soft romantic music that comes on when McQueen is with the actress..is very nice.So thumbs UP on STEVE McQUEEN'S fast pace movie of speeds up to & exceeding 200 miles an hour..AND I MIGHT ADD-NO BLUE SCREEN-It's the real McCOY your watching all the way!!

5 out of 5 stars Best LeMans.......2004-07-11

If youre a real fun of LeMans or Bentley then this DVDs for you. Definitely, its one of those DVDs you have to get if you missed it on SPEED channel or cant afford cable. Forget those. Buy this DVD and youll see the development of LeMans from the May testing, thru qualifying and of course the race.

It covers a lot of the most important moments of the race, everything other than seeing the Bentleys run away 1 and 2. Well, theres not much to look at those two, they are gorgeous but boring to look at since they ran flawlessly for 24 hours. But the DVD really focuses on a lot of the races and teams aspects like the Nasamax entered alcohol car, its great to see it battle thru the field even though its burning more fuel and losing a lot of time on the pits. The epic battles between the courage and panoz at the end. and the wailing Domes are just wonderful to see battle in the early stages with the Audis.

If you just want to sit back and relax to see the sights and speed of LeMans then this DVD youll love. its great for collectors also coz this is perhaps one of those great races when we see a manufacturer win after 73 years.

1 out of 5 stars Just a bunch of shows thrown on a disc!.......2004-04-07

A 24 hour race... 145 mins to show it. So I figure we are going to fly into some race action to cram in everything, right? Wrong?

30 MINS devoted to testing
30 MINS devoted to qualifying (a fairly meaningless excercise for a 24 hour race)
15 MINS to the pre-race historic race
And then FINALLY we get to the race

And here is the worst part. This is blatantly a bunch of Le Mans shows (three of them, the testing show, qualifying show and then overall weekend/race show). So what do they show during the weekend/race segment... a COMPLETE re-run for about 20 mins of what they just showed during the qualifying segment! I'm serious, I thought I must have hit back a chapter on my remote control since I was looking at what I just watched.

A complete waste of time and money this disc. Next year I'm just going to tape some of the footage - it's what's on the disc anyway (since there are also no extras) and save my self a few bucks.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive review of Le Mans 2005.......2006-01-17

With more than two hours of coverage documenting everything from the Le Mans test weekend to Tom Kristensen's emotional podium celebration after becoming the most-successful driver in Le Mans history, this comprehensive review is a must have for any Le Mans or sportscar racing enthusiast. It is also, in my opinion, the best of the Le Mans DVDs that have been released since 2002.
Not only does the review provide the usual coverage from the testing weekend, scruntineering, qualifying, the legends race and the 24-hour classic, but it also has a strong series of extras that previous incarnations of this DVD never had.
It contains four on-board lap featurettes, two of which highlight two-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb making his sportscar racing debut in the Pescarolo (one covering a lap during his first stint near dusk and another on Sunday morning). The other two on-board lap extras give you the chance to ride along on a Pescarolo at night (although the camera lens is really dirty, making viewing difficult) and inside the rumbling C6.R Corvette. There is also an extra covering Loeb's first stint (not an in-car camera) and an interview with Grand Prix legend Stirling Moss just before he heads out to compete in the legends race in his 1959 Aston Martin.
The DVD is also a must for anyone who is a fan of Loeb. The French racing star's evolvement with Pescarolo and his adjustment from rally to closed-course circuit driver is covered comprehensively in the review.
The only disappointment is that the DVD, like previous versions, shows qualifying highlights twice, adding some repetition to the DVD's 140 minutes. While this can be a little frustrating, especially while trying to watch the DVD straight through, most of the racing footage is unique (although the same cannot be said for the overlapping commentary in both chapters that goes into the qualifying results for a second time).
However, the historical aspects associated with this race make the 2005 review a must-have for Le Mans fans. It marked a record seventh Le Mans win for Kristensen and the last of five wins for the Audi R8. It also marked the first time since 1967 that a American Team (Champion Audi) won the classic enduro race. In fact, three of the four classes at the 2005 race were won by American teams.
Overall, I would recommend this DVD to any sportscar fan that wants to relive the classic French race.

3 out of 5 stars An OK movie.......2007-03-30

This movie is OK as long as you're a racing fan. I thought the acting and plot was a little lame, but the racing sequences are great. It's worth buying just for that.
