The Warriors combines pure pulp storytelling and surprisingly poetic images into a thoroughly enjoyable cult classic. The plot is mythically pure (and inspired by a legendary bit of Greek history): When a charismatic gang leader is shot at a conclave in the Bronx meant to unite all the gangs in New York City, a troupe from Coney Island called the Warriors get blamed and have to fight all the way back to their own turf--which means an escalating series of battles with colorful and improbable gangs like the Baseball Furies, who wear baseball uniforms and KISS-inspired face make-up. Pop existentialism, performances that are somehow both wooden and overwrought, and zesty, kinetic filmmaking from director Walter Hill (Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs.) result in a delicious and unexpectedly resonant operatic cheesiness. The Ultimate Director's Cut doesn't radically alter the movie--some of the editing is tighter, the Greek legend has been added as an introduction--with one exception: in transitions, scenes begin and end as scenes from a comic book. While The Warriors always had a comic book flavor (and Hill, in an interview, says he deliberately pursued that sensibility), this device--similar to The Hulk--seems a bit overkill. But it's a minor problem; the movie holds its own, even 26 years later. The dvd has no audio commentary, but there are four short documentaries (really, one documentary in four parts). These include excellent interviews with Hill, actors Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh. The producers, the cinematographer, the costume designer, the stunt coordinator, and many others give lively and in-depth descriptions of how the movie came to be. One of these documentaries includes portions of a deleted scene that was used when The Warriors was screened on television; no other deleted scenes are included. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

A battle of gigantic proportions is looming in the neon underground of New York City. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they're after the Warriors - a street gang blamed unfairly for a rival gang leader's death. This contemporary action-adventure story takes place at night, underground, in the sub-culture of gang warfare that rages from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. Members of the Warriors fight for their lives, seek to survive in the urban jungle and learn the meaning of loyalty. This intense and stylized film is a dazzling achievement for cinematographer Andrew Laszlo.

3 out of 5 stars Is everybody packed ?.......2007-05-31

WARRIORS (1979) is a quintessential late 1970's movie partly in from
the automobiles shown, the debilitated housing and neighborhoods
specifically chosen, and the cheesy 70's era hard rock soundtrack.

Its strength is that it touches on the basic survival and
self-preservation instincts that people have when in danger. Some
may have come to recognize this as fear, and the reaction that ensues
in varying degrees. Those in the military know this well, in combat,
for example.

The story stresses the need for physical fitness (running, jogging,
weight lifting) and excellence in one-to-one hand combat to properly
engage opposing gangs. At the time, this did not encompass gun powder
weaponry, as the arms perhaps were difficult to obtain, and the minds
of the gangs did not see a need for mortality, but rather, "just"
baseball bats, switch blades, molotov cocktails, physical brutality,
arson of vehicles, subway stations, etc.

Above all, what works most, is the amusement and the reaction to a
host of ridiculous scenarios, such as a policewoman working
undercover in a park, looking to actively entrap johns or rapists.
Other examples are the fashion or clothing selections of some gangs
(purple vests anyone?), or even the intro that suggests this plot
being on the same level as the ancient wars told by Homer in respect
of the Greeks and Trojans before the Roman Empire.

The formation of gangs is not entirely unrealistic, in some respects,
as they are often built by ethnicity, with the Warriors being the
sole exception.

The plot is reasonable, starting with a jamboree of sorts attempting
to get various gangs to unite together, for profit maximization of
their untold activities, with the except of a gang of anarchists.

The role of the police is well presented, as they are shown as being
effective, against literally dozens of platoons of thugs, mainly
comprised of youths who seem to have unlimited amounts of free time
on their hands, mainly in the evenings and at night, in the public
transportation systems of NYC and streets.

Amusingly, but unrealistically, a Radio DJ comes on from time to
time, with her score sheet (as if assisting to a boxing match), to
provide the listeners with the latest on the gang strife. (This is
the same actress that shows up in Enzo Castellari's movie, as a gang
leader of stylish dancers in New Barbarians.)

With NYC's dark underbelly (neighborhoods) exposed, it brings into
focus the territorial limits, that gangs feel should not be crossed
by opposing ones, as a matter of pride and of economic control.

Although this DVD is not a true wide-screen release, it does not
distract at all from the action. The filming is good, sharp and good
quality, well edited, if not for the erroneous artistic choice of
using cartoons in between scenes, unfortunately, which takes the
audience out of their surreal experience.

The eye-candy of Deborah Van Valkenburgh obviously works well, as a
contrast to the bleak subway scenes, and to the combat and action
scenes, yet, implausible in her eagerness to forego her own gang and
join Swan.

In sum, Warriors is obviously a popular movie among a segment of the
population, above all, those below 15 or 21, or those in high
schools, owing to the interaction and interplay between gangs and
within the gangs, that is one-on-one, consistently, which makes the
action personal to the audience, never anonymous, impersonal, or
inconsequential. In 2007, the music is a liability, as it has no hip
hop or other styles that were invented and now dominate radio.

4 out of 5 stars The Warriors ultimate directors cut........2007-05-26

I am a long time fan of the movie and from a rather young age I thought it was gritty and very striking. I was about 10 when I first saw the movie and I thought it was told rather well.I wasn't really looking for the movie when I came across the sale for it it brought back a lot of memories. I think as I'm sure most do the bottle rattling was probably the most telling part of the movie and the most memorable scene. In the new cut I really liked the new layout like a comic it was a new twist on the transitions The begining dialog would have made more sense had he Drawn more relevance to the warrior gang than he did.I do think this is a good version of the film and I would recomend it for those that were fans of the original cut.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Mastered so Much Better!.......2007-05-16

Just finished watching 'The Warriors'
I have not seen this movie in 10+ years and was surprised at how well it has stood the test of time.
Very Simplistic and yet Very Complex in it's story telling.
Loved the cartoon angle infused in the Editing.

The 5 stars is for the 'Special Features'.
Very very cool to have the Director, Producers, Editors and Actors explaining the thought process of the movie and how some changes were made mid-flight during the actual shooting of the movie and the technical difficulties that arose and were overcome .

A Must Have for Your Library!

5 out of 5 stars The Warriors.......2007-05-13

The video was delivered in a timely manner and was in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars Pulp cinema that predates video games and sets up the perfect plot for a game release.......2007-04-19

The Warriors is a "night in the life of" movie about the life of a New York City street gang. One gang leader calls on all the rival gangs to set aside their turf battles and unite against the police force. During his eloquent raised-platform speech in the opening sequence of the movie, a drugged-up street punk assassinates him, and points the blame at The Warriors, our hero street gang. A melee ensures, and the Warriors need to make it home to Coney Island without getting assaulted by the cops or their rivals.

There isn't much else to the plot of this movie (in fact, the viewer is never sure of the assassin's motivations, other than surmising that he's a punk who has nothing better to do than cause trouble). Visually, however, The Warriors is a cinematic experience. Each gang is color coded in their own street uniform--baseball gear with face paint, denim overalls, purple satin with matching hats, a mime group, and so on. The Warriors is representative of a video game a full decade before the explosion of video games (and it was recently turned into a video game by Rockstar Games). The various teams are color coded, they get power ups and additional weapons by battling their enemies, and they need to complete a quest without getting killed by the enemy.

Director Walter Hill opens his Director's Cut with an apology for over-the-top director's editions. He reveals that he did only minor edits to his new version, cleaning up the editing and using comic book transitions between the scenes. The comic book transitions are seamless and fit well within the architecture of the movie.

New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori (The Edge) directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. The film pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving.......2007-06-29

I could watch this moving over and over again and still be very affected. The tale of this family and their issues was portrayed in a powerful way.
The two sons' and their acting out in rebellious ways was very realistic. I can't even speak on the oldest daughter's story as it makes me cry out in angst.
The abuse suffered at the father's hand and the mother's acceptance as if the norm was disturbing, yet, real... too real.
It was hard to see the father attempt to redeem his family through violence. He was so very violent and warped it was painful to watch.
The director's choice of color and Smokey filters added to the vivid imagery.
I recommend the movie to all students of film and cinematography as well as those interested in what a great screenplay looks like.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, but very depressing.......2007-06-29

I saw this movie while in Australia visiting my wifes family. About 8 of us sat and watched a DVD version there. They had all seen it and were familar both with the movie and the problems with the Moari culture - very similar to the US American Indian reservations. When this movie was over everyone was speechless. Very well written and thought provoking movie. Do not think that this is an uplifting movie or a happy everafter movie - it is not.

5 out of 5 stars great kiwi movie.......2007-06-27

great movie... don't watch alone as this is a very power movie about a dysfunctional family in new zealand

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely powerful.......2007-05-22

This is the most powerful movie that shows domestic violence and sexual assault that I or my associates have seen. It is remarkably well done and tasteful, but very powerful. I show it to domestic violence, anger management and sexual assault clients in my practice.

5 out of 5 stars Moving but disturbing story of a urban Maori family .......2007-03-04

When I first watched Once Were Warriors I had no idea of what to except. From the jacket I knew it was drama that centered around the lives of a urban Maori family living in Aukland, New Zealand. Being that I am an American fasinated with American urban life I decided to give Once Were Warriors a try. I am gratified with the end result but also shocked by many of the depictions. Life for a Maori seems plagued with many of the ills that you find in urban areas in most metropolitan or even smaller towns and cities in America.

From my reserch I understand that Once Were Warriors was written by a Maori novelist that grew up in a neighboorhood similar in Wellington. I cannot judge on how realistic his depictions are but he definately does present a very engaging story.

The film made me feel the emotions of every single member of the Heike clan. Ultimately, I felt sympathy for all the characters including Jake. Jake was a tragic figure that was a loveable monster. Of all the characters, I felt the most sympathy for Grace who had an ambition to make it out of her surrounding a be more. I will not spoil the movie but say that what happens to Grace literally turned my stomach in disgust. Just for the initial reaction shows how power this film is and why exactly it deserves a 5 star rating.

Just a note: I would like to see more movies done about the Maori people that showcase also the indigenous culture and spirtual traditions of the Maori. Once Were Warriors was nice but I would like also some other kind of Maori films as well.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-05-16

Admittedly the quality of the videos is not the best but as I recall they weren't that good when I was watching them on my black & white TV in the early 60s. So what can you expect? I bought these videos for one purpose only and that was to bring back some nostalgia from my youth when things were better and Hero's still defeated the bad guy.

Unlike a few of the other people that reviewed this Movie pack I knew that there was only so much you could do with the media that these movies were recorded on. Maybe some day they can make them look like today's wide screen dolby DVDs, but for the price they were well worth it.

I might not recognize them if the doctored them up too much anyway. This is a very good deal for the money.

The heyday of the swords & sandals epics was brief: 1959 to '64. Primarily Italian-made (although French and other European concerns had a hand in many of these), the films usually featured an American or British headliner along with a cast of native talent. Historic location shoots added to the glamor of these action-packed morality plays (that the good guys usually won). They were fun, exciting, filled with beautiful people, costumes and scenery, and are of a unique cinematic style that will probably never be seen again.

Featured actors in the WARRIORS 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION include Steve Reeves, Cameron Mitchell, Ed Fury, Mark Forest, Gordon Scott, Guy Williams, Reg Park and Gordon Mitchell. One movie actually stars a young Roger Moore, while ex-heavyweight boxer (and giant) Primo Carnera has a supporting role in another. Also to be found here: Orson Welles, Broderick Crawford, Alan Ladd, Debra Paget, Robert Alda and more!

The averaged-out score for this box set was obtained from user polling data gathered by a cinema-related website. On a 1 to 10 scale, WARRIORS current rating is 4.5.

5 out of 5 stars Totally worth your money.......2007-04-05

Now, I'm not a student of Italian cult movies, a B movie expert, or person who is somehow predisposed to the "Sword and Sandals" genre. I am also too young to remember the sixties, so I never got to see these movies air for the first time or played during the Saturday afternoon matinee.

But I can tell you there are some great movies in this collection. When I say "great" I mean most of these movies have a compelling story-they will captivate you for the duration of the film. And the stories are surprisingly rich in variety. Sure, they are all lumped in the same "Sword and Sandals" genre, but I don't think a person could watch a these movies and fairly say "they are all the same." There is a lot of variety here.

Admittedly, the picture quality and sound on these movies is not that great. But that is not to say that the movies are unwatchable. So far, it hasn't been an issue for me. There are a few places where the sound was too low or garbled to understand, but in those very rare instances, it doesn't really make a difference because you get what is going on from surrounding context. Moreover, this was probably how the sound was recorded during the original production.

The special effects are also quite cheesy, especially during fighting sequences. But it does not matter. When you have a good story, you will not care about them.

And you get FIFTY movies for the price. What a steal. I think I got my money's worth after watching the first six movies. I've been coming home after work, popping in a DVD, and watching a movie a day.

I'm telling you -- you can't go wrong here. You are bound to find movies you like in this collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great set, but missing its crown jewel!.......2007-04-02

Sure the movies are less than stellar. And the dvd transfers are less
than desireable. But fifty sword, sandal and sweat movies in one set is
    hard to beat!
My only real complaint is that this set is missing Duel of the Titans!
The only sword and sandal flix that both Steve Revees and Gordon Scott
    starred in together!
This film is considered the Holy Grail of sword films. Extremely hard to
find, and if you can locate a copy, its usually in the form of a badly made bootleg copy! Hopefully someday it will come out legitimitly on dvd.

    5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable!.......2007-03-23

I've been in muscle heaven for the past four months, watching and rewatching some of my favorites from these 50 sword and sandals sagas. One fabulous revelation is the discovery of Mark Forest, probably the most phenomenal looking Hercules of them all--with the exception of the Man-Who-Looks-Like-A-God, Steve Reeves. Forest was massive, with a beautifully shaped face, head and of course, that incredible torso of bulging pecs and ridged abs. He also conveyed a powerful sensuality lacking in nearly all of the musclemen you see here. His amazing physique is starred in "Kindar the Invunerable" and "Hercules Against the Mongols." Also contained in this collection is the ultimate valentine dedicated to Steve Reeves, "Giant of Marathon" where his fabulous torso is exploited from the first frame to the last. Lucky for us, he plays most of the picture in a very brief white loincloth which emphasizes his phenomenal body. At the beginning, there's a scene where he is crowned with a wreath of olive leaves as his fellow Olympian warriors look on. Reeves steps forward and your mouth drops for his body is lit and glows beyond belief. This is the best investment I've ever made in purchasing a DVD collection. You're able to watch and compare all the muscle men who went over to Italy in the early 60s: Reg Park, Don Vardis, Gordon Scott, Gordon Mitchell and all the others. This is a collection to treasure and hope for a follow-up sequel that will contain the rest of Mark Forest and Steve Reeves body of work.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Realistic.......2007-06-01

As one of the stars of this show, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Most reality shows are pretty rigged, but I'm here to say that this was one is pretty true to real life. Sure, I come off a little too cocky sometimes, but then again, I kind of am; as bad as that sounds, you need that supreme confidence in yourself when you're trading and risking so much money. I do wish they'd focused a little more on my trading itself as some of the edits don't really make sense, but television still hasn't found a visually appealing way to show how intense trading actually is. The cool thing is that all this media exposure I've gotten actually played a large role in inspiring me to write my upcoming book, "An American Hedge Fund."

Anyway, I just bought my own copy of the DVD and the bonus features on Disc 2 with all the outtakes are hilarious. I highly recommend this product.

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting Series.......2007-05-24

I must say this was a pretty exciting serie to watch on MOJO this year. Wall Street Warriors let you see the insiders of Wall Street from the day trader, the startup hedge fund manager, and the people who make Wall Street work on the exchanges. No other series let you into the minds and lives of such people before. It was great to see legends like Jim Rogers of the Quantum Fund speak of his life experiences and see future legends like Tim Sykes develop into great investors.

5 out of 5 stars The Road Warriors Were the BEST.......2007-04-20

Great DVD for any true Road Warriors fan. I remember watching some of the matches on the DVD as a kid. I thought I'd never get to see those again. The nostalgia and background info on the Warriors makes this a must have.

      5 out of 5 stars What a DVD!.......2006-11-24

I was a Road Warrior fan back when they were in the AWA. In fact I have an original VHS tape they released of them when they were in the AWA. SO to see this coming out was great. The documentary was almost tear jerking in the end and the extras are awesome. They have matches from Georgia Championship Wrestling, NWA, AWA, Japan, WCW, and the WWF/WWE. I loved it and I would recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RUSH!!!.......2006-07-10

If you only know the Legion Of Doom as the team of Heidenrich & Animal...then you really need to peep this one because the ORIGINAL Road Warriors are one of the greatest tag teams of all time. In a time where promotions were based around single wrestlers, they became the attraction people wanted & payed to see. Roadwarrior Hawk, Roadwarrior Animal, and manager Precious Paul Ellering...the Road Warriors.

The documentry starts with stories of Hawk & Animal growing up & working out at the gym which lead to them being trained as wrestlers. The evolution of their look & characters are discussed along with their relationship with manager Paul Ellering. Their stints in both Georgia Championship Wrestling and the AWA including fueds with famous teams like The Crusher & Baron Von Raschke, Fabolous Freebirds, Midnight Express, Four Horsemen, and the Koloffs are looked at in detail along with funny stories about Dick The Brusier & The Crusher and the Fabolous Ones. Their first run in the WWE goes over the fued with Demolition and if they were Road Warrior imitatiors & their historic SummerSlam '91 match. But just like everything in life, all good things must come to an end and that's where this documentry starts to go downhill as Hawk's problems & actions outside the ring led to the breakup of the Road Warriors, a brief discussion of the Japanese version of the Road Warriors, and their return to WCW that didn't work out well. Returning to WWE as L.O.D. 2000, the entire storyline involving Droz, and the death of Roadwarrior Hawk round out this documentry.

DVD extras are spread amongst two disc as various interviews, 3 Confidental pieces, additional comments from Michael Hayes & Paul Ellering, and the old school Road Warriors music video are here in addition to various matches from their career. In addition to three "squash" matches (including one featuring a young Arn Anderson) where they just destroyed their opponetts are matches with alternative commentary with Jim Ross & Animal facing wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan & Tenryn, Bisco Brothers, Magnum T.A. & Ronnie Garvin in the Crockett Cup finals, and their AWA title win against Baron Von Raschke & The Crusher. Larry & Curt "Mr. Perfect" Henning, Fabolous Freebirds, the Koloffs in a chain match, two matches featuring the Midnight Express (including the Starrcade Scaffold match), Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard, Demolition, their SummerSlam '91 title victory against Nasty Boys, Hart Foundation, Money Inc., Sting & Lex Luger, and their final tag team title victory against Godwinns round out the additional matches on this DVD set.

Bottom line is that if you are a fan of tag team wrestling & classic "old school" footage then this DVD is a necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Wrestling Must Have!.......2006-04-25

This DVD is another example of how the WWF (not WWE!) is bring back classic wrestling to long time fans. This DVD chronicals the history of the Road Warriors from their beginnings to end. It is great to see the real inside information on the team straight from Animal, Paul Ellering and others close to them. A great DVD! The only thing I would have like to see more of is the TBS interviews and the time they jumped Dusty Rhoades and put the spike in his eye.

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to 2nd volume.......2006-02-17

I don't think I find any matches against the Steiner Brothers. I also hope to get some of their early matches in the AWA. Some of the early matches included on this volume are not that "extraordinary." There are no matches against Sgt Slaughter, Crusher Blackwell, Greg Gagne, Jim Brunzell, Steiner Brothers, Samoan Swat Team, Fantastics, Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez, Tower of Doom matches, etc. The match where they teamed with Sting and turned against him after the match would be essential. More matches from their numerous Japan tours would be great. I want to watch the match where they won the NWA International tag team championship in Japan and brought the belts back to the US. I had watched a few matches where a Power Warrior substituted for Animal and wrestled along side Hawk against the Steiners. There were also matches where Animal and Hawk wrestled against The Great Muta and Rick Steiner. I remember reading Japanese wrestling magazines showing the Road Warriors went fishing with the New Japan Pro Wrestling stars Muta, Chono, etc. with the Steiners. There was also a match where the RW teamed up with Hulk Hogan against Sting, Dr Death Steve Williams and Terry Gordy. Back in the US, there was a singles match where Ric Flair supposedly use a spike from Animal's shoulder pad on Animal's eye. I also want to see how the Powers of Pain hurt Animal's eye in a weight-lifting showdown(?) that resulted in surgery. There was a cage match where they were wrestling against the Samoan Swat Team (I think), and suddenly the Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) stormed in and put handcuff on Animal and threw Hawk into the cage bursting him open. If my memory was right, that led to an unlikely match later: RW + Midnight Express vs. SST + Freebirds. There was also a match against Dr Death Steve Williams and Mike Rotundo (or Terry Gordy) where Nikita Koloff was the guest referee. In a NWA studio taping, Ric Flair was wrestling in the ring, Hawk interfered and attacked Flair. When Animal tried to enter the ring, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson hit him from behind. Then they piledrived him on the concrete floor outside the ring. After that, they ganged up on Hawk and both were left unconscious. I really missed those 80's matches where the Road Warriors slided into the ring and just kept pounding and throwing their opponents around. These were not in this volume. I would also like to see Sunny. Hopefully they will be included in an upcoming Road Warriors DVD.

      4 out of 5 stars Buyer hints.......2007-02-07

Please check the version that you choose to buy. There are two versions of this boxed set, one is the real deal and the other is a bootleg. I'm not sure which version this one is because the one I purchased was labled as the official set. It wasn't till it came that I knew that it was labled Legandary Armor Samurai Troopers and was badly subtitled throughout the first five disks. That fact didn't really bother me because I know the story backwards and fowards and I also know some Japanese, but that might bother someone not that familiar with the anime. Of course there is always the option of watching the dubed version which I haven't seen any errors in.

Ways You Can Tell A Bootleg While Shopping Online:
1)It says Region All or Region Code None
2)Fewer disks - The official Boxed set has 12 disks and the bootleg only has eight

Ways You Can Tell A Bootleg After You Get It:
1)The Box has a compleatly different cover than the one advertised
2)The Box has the Japanese name instead of the English one
3)You go to watch the subtitled version only to relize that there are large gaps in the subtitling causing confusuion in the storyline.
4)the picture appears grany (I didn't have this problem, but it does happen from time to time)
5)You notice steps 1 & 2 in how to spot a bootleg online (in the event of false advertising)

I hope this helps. Ja ne!

5 out of 5 stars The Advent of the Ronin Warriors.......2006-05-07

This BOX SET is a long time coming. Ronin Warriors has always been another of my few favorite anime cartoons I was graced to see on Cartoon Network's TOONAMI at a young age back in the late 90s' and 2000. This is the kind of Anime that shows quality even after several years. RONIN WARRIORS had a storyline that before the final series and last OVA was something of a marvel in its own right. The delivery of the TALPA story arcs and the mini arcs were written wonderfully; The characters were not so much as nice to look at as they were diverse and flawed characters with problems when it came to their armors. Even the villains had problems within their ranks besides having a hard time defeating the young warriors. The overall storylines premise is not so complex as it is dramatic (but overly so like some boy-oriented animes). With the end of Ronin Warriors (YST) it was apparent that an OVA was bound to follow its processor. In a final bout of not so well produced OVAs and Mini-series, YOROIDEN SAMURAI TROOPERS is followed by "GAIDEN" - "LEGEND OF THE INFERNO ARMOR" - and "MESSAGE." In 2002 an English adaptation of these three series was produced.

      [THE SERIES]:

STORYLINE (RONIN WARRIORS): One day, Mia Koji and her grandfather decipher an ancient prophecy that describes the coming of a dark force that would shadow the mortal world and bring ruination to it. These things seem to be coming true when a news report televises a boy and large white tiger that happens to be causing quite a commotion in Shinjuku. Mia's grandfather recognizes him as a Ronin Warrior, a savior of the mortal world. As prophesied a dark shadow befalls the city of Japan and all denizens are captured, save for a boy named Yulie and Mia (respectfully). Ryo and his tiger White Blaze combat against a demon soldier sent by lord Talpa himself. He is joined by four others, Rowen of Strata, Sage of Halo, Cye of Torrent, and Kento of Hardrock. Together (in a sense) they defeat the Foot Soldier only to be told by the dark lord Talpa, the demon lord of the Netherworld, he intends on taking the mortal world for his own. At his side are his four Dark Warlords (Demon Generals), Anbuis of Cruelty, Dais of Illusion, Skemet of Venom, and Cale of corruption and darkness. From there the storyline chronicles the five cocky Ronin Warriors being separated in their second battle to trying to understand their armors better and so forth. They are assisted by Mia Koji (Nasuti Yagyu), a young student-teacher, and a mysterious warrior-monk known only as The Ancient (Kaos). From there it only gets better but, Ronin Warriors does manage to fall flat on its back in some areas of the series after Talpa's so called defeat. There were semi story arcs concerning the INFERNO ARMOR of Hariel. From Sarenbou to Lord Saberstrike and others, the arc of Ryo and the power draining Hariel armor soon became increasingly tiresome to a point where you frankly didn't care if Ryo beat the badie or not. You just wanted the Talpa to return and fast. And in the final story arc, Talpa seems close to world domination as he captures three of the five Ronin Warriors. Ryo and Rowen nearly powerless to stop him and his new foot-solider, Lady Kayura. This in my opinion is best story arc since the first one in the very beginning. Sure, it follows almost the same formula the first arc had but does it with more depth. The characters were better, the villains were villainous, and the drama was excellent. It was an overall excellent way to end the series. 4/5

CHARACTERS (RONIN WARRIORS): One of the many problems I had with this series as a kid were the characters: Ryo and Yulie annoyed me the most, while Mia was simply disliked because of her outfit and her constantly being kidnapped with Yulie. Ryo I didn't favor so much because he was so over dramatic and quick to start the waterworks through his anger when things seemed their bleakest (usually concerning the Inferno Armor). But this dislike soon diminished when he got a little tougher and acted more like the "unofficial" leader near the end. The other characters, Sage, Rowen, Kento, Cye, and the Warlords were the most interesting for me. Sage and Rowen were the usual cool and collected personalities to balance out Kento's hot-headedness and Cye's hesitance to battle (in the OVAs any how). Kento and Cye were naturally the comic-relief but not so to the point that they were stereotyped in the way most people are used to. The five Ronins cannot be the loners in truth, because they cannot win alone or think their strength alone can defeat the dynasty. They all have to work, rely, and trust each other (and themselves) for their armors work in perfect unity. They all do eventually create a strong bond of friendship through hardship. The four Warlords and Kayura were complex characters, but ultimately corrupt and misguided souls who were too cool to hate. Talpa was the greatest villain throughout the entire series, never hesitant in what he had to achieve. At a more wiser age I seriously couldn't see why I disliked Ryo or Mia. Yulie remains undecided with me. - 4/5

ANIMATION/BACKGROUND (RONIN WARRIORS): I'll be the first to admit that the animation for Roinin Warriors in the beginning wasn't so stellar but it was far from horrible for a show created in the late 1980s. The series was known for using rehash scenes for battles or other things. Some the animation movements for the characters of vehicles were jerky or lame. (What cartoon isn't?). The animation for the series at that time only got better as it progressed. Simple things like the transformation scenes and sword fighting, physical combat showed off improvements. - 4/5; The backgrounds for the series were nicely drawn which is good thing - the paintings for rocky mountains and Talpa's castle were probably the best things to stare at in the background, other than that most of it was pretty average or just there for details. - 3/5

MUSIC (RONIN WARRIORS): The music for Ronin Warrirors was the next best thing in the series. Composed by Osamu Tozuka the score for the series is a great joy to listen to. Perhaps not as moving or dramatic as Kou Ohtani's score for Gundam Wing but just as good. By now, unlike Gundam Wing, Yoroiden Samurai Trooper soundtracks have been out of print for some years now. Finding them beyond the reaches of Ebay is a slim to none chance, respectfully. Nevertheless the Tozuka created a wide range of musical themes that spanned from Jazzy, melancholy piano solos (great for Ryo angst), to 80s styled rock. Even themes that sounded like they would be better placed in a peaceful moments went well with action sequences. Guitar and electric piano solos were barely spared throughout the series (especially during INFERNO transformation), the theme songs performed by Moriguchi Hiroko and Uranishi Mariko matched the atmosphere of drama of RW and thensome. However, Tozuka's downfall with the YST score is that sometimes, there were some pieces that was so overly dramatic or sappy that I wanted to gag when I watched the scene or listened to the music play in the background. Overall its not bad 80s styled music. - 4/5

VOICE ACTING (RONIN WARRIORS): Provided by, if not the well known, OCEAN GROUP of Vancouver, Canada, Ronin Warriors had ensemble of familiar and not so familiar voice actors lending their vocals to the enigmatic characters of the heroes and villains. In the first episode the VA's seemed comfortable in the positions of the Ronin Warriors, though there were some moments where they sounded kind of lame script wise ("You cruel devil, let them go now!" - Kento), but all in all they weren't bad. Matt Hill brings a silly serious kind of personality to Ryo of the Wildfire, with a recognizable "surfer dude" accent. Michael Donovan most notably lend his voice for the characters Sage and Cye, pulling off an almost good English accent for Cye and gruff American accent for Sage. I really wasn't too thrilled to find out Matt Smith was voicing Sage instead of Donovan in the OVAs. Jason Gray-Stanford is probably the best VA for Kento in the entire English dub production. I was sorely disappointed when they replaced him with Andrew Francis (Escaflowne, Monster Rancher) in the OVAs. He didn't have the same quirky and charismatic voice as Standford had. My favorite voice actor out of the four mentioned has to be Ward Perry; His Brooklyn accent for Rowen was the best and it made the character unique as far as the English dub for RW went.

I hated it when he decided to drop the accent and opt for his "Gades" (of Escaflowne) accent in the OVA as well. It was like he got lazy or something. Paul Dobson, Richard Newman, Matt Smith, & Ward Perry were all excellent choices for the Dark Warlords. In the question of Lady Kayura's voice actor, I favor Jane Perry's characterization of the female warrior over Masako Katsuki's. Mostly because Jane Perry's trademark laughter and delivery of lines is better than Katsuki's, not because the Japanese VA is horrible. On the contrary. However, the best of the villainous voices had to the gender-questionable Mina Mina as Talpa. Whether or not this is a man or woman remains to be seen, but this actor was probably the BEST voice actor in the entire series. He/she performed perfectly as the dark lord and pulled of his/her lines amazingly it gave me chills. Lastly, Lalainia Lindbjerg (DBZ - Bulma Briefs) and Christopher Turner were an amazing Mia Koji and Yuil when compared Maggie Blue O'Hara and Danny McKinnon. However, the one time the English dub messed up was in the second Episode "Glory for Anubis." Most of the voice actors (except Matt Hill, Paul Dobson and others) were completely changed or characterized differently.

Mia was voiced by STARGATE SGI-1 fame Teryl Rothery, Peter Wilds voiced both Kale and Dais. The script was even bad, Matt Hill said "Flare up now" at the wrong time and did a less than stellar performance in this episode. I was glad when everything was normal by the third episode, though this kind of problem was noted again in the later episode "Warriors Return" -- in which Ryo rushes to save Rowen and the others from captivity (Kale is voiced by another actor: Supposedly Scott McNeil or Peter Wilds again). - ENGLISH 4.1/5. As for the Japanese voice acting: It too was excellent for Japanese voice acting standards, the pronunciation of their names was a bit strange for me at first -- Mia's Japanese name sounded like the group was saying "Nasty" and not Nasutei----. If anything, the Japanese dub has better information on the original storyline for the series itself as opposed to the changes in RW. Another plus is that Ryo was voiced by a male actor and not female, as were the others if memory except Cye serves. Their vocal performance overall sends a charge through me, especially when they cry "BUSO! - REKKA (Tenkuu, Kongo, Korin, and Suiko)!" and their sure-kills. Their overall energy from the actors is what makes the Japanese dub better than the English dub. - Japanese - 5/5

DVD: The DVD has none of the obvious BANDAI special features (trailer previews), maybe the credits section and scene selection but that's about it. Manufactured as a Duel Disc, the Japanese version of Ronin Warriors (Yoroiden Samurai Troopers) is placed on the second side of the DVD complete with the usual ENGLISH subtitles. The downfall of this BANDAI produced DVD set is that none of the DVDs have 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound along with the usual 2.0 sound, which is a major disappointment when you've got a theater system wanting to be used to its full extent. Another I have with the DVD production is the need for two-sided discs. It would've been mightily simpler to two both Languages and Episode formats on one disk. Yes, it would've meant the loss of the YST DVD menu (it would've been better if there were animated menus anyhow) but it wouldn't have made a difference I suppose. ---- 3/5

      [THE OVAs]:

      [GAIDEN & INFERNO]:

(GIADEN): While "Gaiden" is probably regarded as the most plotless of the three OVAs. But it is most possibly the more faithful, for the atmosphere to Ronin Warriors/YST is maintained in this two part OVA. The plot is fairly simple: A couple of NYC mooches are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time when they decide to taunt and tease a mysterious figure, who in turn promptly kills them save one person. This figure turns out to be the armor of Halo. The armor is seemingly under the control of a dark priest named Shikaisen. Elsewhere Ryo Sanada is celebrating his 17th birthday (and Kento's big win on the lottery) and ponders the absence of Sage before overhearing a news report of an armored assailant killing several people in NYC. He proceeds to go to America without telling the others but Kento and Cye are quick to discover his plans and join him on the plan to New York. Meanwhile in NYC Rowen, Mia, and Yulie travel to the university Sage was supposed to have gone to inspect the authenticity of a sword supposed to belong to the Date family. They discover that he was never even there to begin with, thus they try to unravel the mystery of their friend's disappearance. From there the Ronin Warriors are forced to confront their ally [the armor of Halo] while searching for Sage. The animation for GAIDEN is a little more dated than the animation used in the series, which made me wonder if this was before or after the series. Of course such thoughts were truncated upon learning its release date (but anything's possible). You can visibly see the frames in each shot of the animation, most notably the opening theme and their transformation sequences. The music hails mostly from the series while adding a little something new, but is an ultimately cheesy 80s type soundtrack. The characters were pretty much the same in the series if not more mature. The original character Luna (or Runa) didn't pan out as much as I would've liked her to and she was dealt with in a lousy way as well. The romance between her and Ryo was nonsensical at best; They just met in the 1st episode and suddenly their becoming involved with each other. Unrealistic. The voice acting on the English dub is a major disappointment as expressed above; Most of the voice actors were replaced by different ones or the original voice actors really didn't put any sort of effort into characterizing the characters. An annoying point of the English dub is that they pronounce Ryo name RE-OH instead to RYE-OH (this did this in the English dub for "Princess Nine"). The Japanese is basically the best on the DVD and a welcome refuge. All in all Gaiden gets a 4/5.

(INFERNO): Inferno was my least favorite out of the two. While there seemed to be more substance in terms of storyline in this four part miniseries, it all felt much to melodramatic. The Ronin Warriors, are enjoying their summer vacation are suddenly thrust back into the world of heated battles that never seem to end when an African warrior appears in Japan and wordlessly challenges Ryo to battle. The warrior of wildfire tries his best to defeat the new "foe" but is outmatched in every aspect of their battle. Sage, Rowen, Kento and Cye don't fare well against the warrior either. Cye suddenly has a bout of reluctance for battle and refuses to part in any of their situation. After Ryo and Sage are captured, Cye runs off, abandoning his armor and his friends at the same time. Because of their separation, the warriors are easily manipulated by their armors. I really didn't like the plot where the white inferno armor is suddenly a corrupt and evil entity with no virtue of its own, bent on controlling the armors and their bearers. Its counterpart the black inferno armor and its bearer was a sort of lousy addition to the storyline as well. The animation was much better than GAIDEN, in every term of the word. You can truly see that the animators had more resources and time to put into the motion of the characters. However, in the final episode it starts to get patchy; Scenes like the ellipse, the Ronin's flash backs, and then the scene where the silent warrior's sweetheart and White Blaze are hit by the Inferno armors blast are the most visible notes of poor animation. The voice acting is the same in English, probably because I do not favor the changes. The Japanese dub is still the way to go if you want to watch this mini-series. - 3/5

(MESSAGE): Now this five part mini-series was just a plain waste of time and production. There is simply no rhyme or reason to it. MESSAGE was more or less a poor attempt to revitalize the YST series by introducing a so-called "villain" that "kidnaps" the Ronin Warriors, trapping them in new armor. Ryo goes to recuse them but in a manner I didn't expect and was disappointed by. This so-called villain is consumed with sorrow and hatred toward war and those who wage it due to a traumatizing moment in her childhood. So its only natural that she goes after the Ronin Warriors. But the sad part is that even if each episode focuses on the main characters (Rowen, Cye, Sage, Kento, and lastly Ryo), it does little to explain anything about MESSAGE's storyline if there was one. This was more or less an archive show, for there were mostly nothing but flashbacks from the series and previous OVA's with new footage thrown in as an added bonus. Twenty-one minutes of pure torture and pain, confusing dialogue trying to explain an unexplainable complex of the characters, choppy editing and Audio choices that does nothing to nullify the fact that this mini-series was pointless endeavor. I would sorely advise skipping this DVD and never watching it. Some things were better off left alone. --- 1/5

TOTAL: All in all the RONIN WARRIORS BOX SET is a must buy for fans of the show. However, if a little more thought had been put into the production of the DVDs and the OVAs themselves, then this was be a no-questions-asked buy. But every diamond has its flaws and Ronin Warrior's shows theirs. ---- [a 4 out of 5]

      4 out of 5 stars freakin' awesome.......2006-02-28

I ordered the Ronin Warriors set but when I received it, it turned out to be Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, which is indeed the same thing. I love the series, I'm glad I bought it. The price was unbelievable (cheap) and it got to me monday after I ordered it the preceeding friday. This was only my second online shopping experience and I'm very pleased. However, I think things should be advertised as exactly what they are. In this case it didn't matter, but that might not be the case some other time...

      5 out of 5 stars I love this cartoon.......2005-10-12

I just really like this cartoon. Nice animation, interesting (and, in the case of Kento, quite amusing) characters, good plotline, really nice scenery. I seriously appreciate the Toonami people for this cartoon, but then I like all the cartoons they show, except for Thunder Cats.

      5 out of 5 stars HELLO!!! FINALLY!!!.......2005-06-05

My God what a relief! FINALLY this series has been released in its entirety. I watched this show at the age of 19 in the spring of '95 on WTXX channel 20 (Waterbury/Hartford/New Haven)and it BLEW MY MIND!!! The power that these characters exhibit is MIND-BLOWING! The situations they're put in and the villains they have to face are CRAZY! Not knowing if the main characters will get out alive, especially after you've come to like them, invested in them and become attached to them:this is what suspense is! And as all good writers know, suspense makes for great storytelling. For animation this is truely powerful stuff. That, I think, is why this series is so riveting. When the Ronins call out their main attack moves(and they are YELLING) it is PURE adrenaline! This is absolutely captivating entertainment! Beyond belief at times! As an animation enthusiast I was EXTREMELY impressed with this show. I've been upset for awhile that I couldn't find the entire series, as I had never seen all of the episodes largely because it was syndicated in my area. Only a few volumes with just 4 flimsy episopes apiece were released. After that, I hadn't heard or seen anything for years. And now this. WOO - HOO!YES!!! This show was the one thing that got me pumped at a bad time in my life, and it is one of the few good memories I have from that period. Originally relesed in 1989 in Japan and '95 in the U.S. This is well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A movie is only as good as its villain.......2006-07-25

To be frank, this movie gives the feeling of a thrown together, have a happy ending kid movie. But when u see its villain, all conventions disappear. Komodo has to be one of the best villains in this genre of film. I find myself renting it over and over , just to watch the scenes with him in it. Angus Macfayden brings a quirky and somewhat comedic attitude but thats balanced by the sadistic evil we know lies in Komodo because of his ruthlessness. Now i admit, parents may not like choice scenes in the movie such as Alicia's new outfits as she joins Komodo and the sex kitten attitude. Now this is to parents looking to buy this movie. There is a curse word and i myself, who watched it before as a child, did not remember it being there so be on the watch. There is only one so it wont do much damage to the young viewer. But it might get them repeating it. There is a good bit of violence and some bloodshed, which is what i meant by conventions being shattered as the villain enters the story. To be honest i find Angus in this role to be dangerous and sexy, which keeps my coming back. As for the heroes, i do like how they made them non conventional ie kangaroos. It twists the story a bit and gets the kids rooting for the cute karate kangaroos, which is the aim of the filmakers. The fight sequences are spectacular. With a director like John Woo, you come to find great action sequences and here is no exception. My one probablem, which is why there is one less star, is the abysmal script. Even though there are memorable lines, the rest of it drags the story down like the titanic and leaves you going huh? Other then that the rest is all good and i thank John Woo for giving a non forgetable villain.

5 out of 5 stars Warriors of Virtue DVD.......2006-04-02

      5 out of 5 stars ..........2005-08-01

this is the most ridiculously awesome movie i have seen in my entire life - kangaroo ninjas!!! it doesn't get any better than that. wow, what a trip ryan, what a trip. makes me want to grow some big back legs and a pouch and learn kung fu. great movie.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2005-06-16

Not a great movie plotwise, it's rather silly. But oh MAN the character designs! If you're a fan of costuming, anthropomorphs, special effects, or kangaroos, watch this for the eyecandy!
The costume design in this is wonderful. I can only DREAM of making something so realistic.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie!.......2004-10-17

The story of WOV is about a boy who always wished he was something more. Ryan is a boy who has a crippled knee, and has always dreamed of playing football and just being normal. His friend gives him a book, telling him it is his way to "finding himself." Ryan scoffs at it, but takes it. But when he is sucked into a churning water pool in a freak accident, it transports him to a world unlike any other. There, he must aid the Warriors of Virtue, a band of Roos who command the forces of nature. In the end, it becomes a quest to defeat the forces of evil, and a journey to find his way back home.

This movie greatly focuses on the idea of not what you have on the outside, but what is inside. Ryan's quest to become stronger on the outside becomes a quest to get home, which can only be done by understanding what was inside him.
