|
No doubt opinionated fans will argue about what should fall under the rubric of "masterpiece" in Hitchcock's body of work, but with the bona fide classics Vertigo, Psycho, and The Man Who Knew Too Much, there's plenty of timeless movie magic here. Eye-popping transfers and gorgeous sound make this set one of the must-have releases of the year.
Should the Hitchcock fan have the energy for more after imbibing on the movies themselves, a bonus disc provides additional documentaries. These include a revealing interview in which the master of suspense discusses, among other things, how much he dislikes working with method actors, going so far as to name names (we're talking about you, Jimmy Stewart and Montgomery Clift). In an American Film Institute lifetime achievement ceremony, the master of suspense is praised by the likes of Stewart and Ingrid Bergman, and seems to be suffering from severe boredom as celebrities pile on the flattery. Then Hitchcock opens his mouth to accept the award, delivering an endlessly witty stream of perfect bon mots that prove once again that he was a master of high comedy as well. Revealing documentaries about the making of Psycho and The Birds round out the feast of extras. The 36-page booklet, filled mostly with stills and poster art, provides little new information about the films.--Ryan Boudinot
Films Included in Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection
Saboteur
Robert Cummings stars as Barry Kane, a patriotic munitions worker who is falsely accused of sabotage, in this wartime thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Plastered across the front page of every newspaper and hated by the nation, Kane's only hope of clearing his name is to find the real villain. The script as a whole is a clever one--Algonquin wit Dorothy Parker shares a screenwriting credit, and her trademark zingers make for a terrific mix of humor and suspense. Saboteur is a pleasure whether you're a die-hard Hitchcock fan or just someone who likes a good nail-biter. --Ali Davis
Shadow of a Doubt
Alfred Hitchcock considered this 1943 thriller to be his personal favorite among his own films, and although it's not as popular as some of Hitchcock's later work, it's certainly worthy of the master's admiration. Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920's serial killer known as "The Merry Widow Murderer," the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. And, of course, it's all done in pure Hitchcockian style. --Jeff Shannon
Rope
An experimental film masquerading as a standard Hollywood thriller, Rope is simple and based on a successful stage play: two young men (John Dall and Farley Granger) commit murder, more or less as an intellectual exercise. They hide the body in their large apartment, then throw a dinner party. Will the body be discovered? Director Alfred Hitchcock, fascinated by the possibilities of the long-take style, decided to shoot this story as though it were happening in one long, uninterrupted shot. Since the camera can only hold one 10-minute reel at a time, Hitchcock had to be creative when it came time to change reels, disguising the switches as the camera passed behind someone's back or moved behind a lamp. James Stewart, as a suspicious professor, marks his first starring role for Hitchcock, a collaboration that would lead to the masterpieces Rear Window and Vertigo. --Robert Horton
Rear Window
Like the Greenwich Village courtyard view from its titular portal, Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window is both confined and multileveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment, convalescing in a wheelchair, from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Cheerful voyeurism, as well as the behavior glimpsed among the various tenants, affords a droll comic atmosphere that gradually darkens when he sees clues to what may be a murder. At deeper levels, Rear Window plumbs issues of moral responsibility and emotional honesty, while offering further proof (were any needed) of the director's brilliance as a visual storyteller. --Sam Sutherland
The Trouble with Harry
A busman's holiday for Alfred Hitchcock, this 1955 black comedy concerns a pesky corpse that becomes a problem for a quiet, Vermont neighborhood. Shirley MacLaine makes her film debut as one of several characters who keep burying the body and finding it unburied again. Hitchcock clearly enjoys conjuring the autumnal look and feel of the story, and he establishes an important, first-time alliance with composer Bernard Herrmann, whose music proved vital to the director's next half-dozen or so films. But for now, The Trouble with Harry is a lark, the mischievous side of Hitchcock given free reign. --Tom Keogh
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. The Man Who Knew Too Muchis the work of a master in his prime. --Tom Keogh
Vertigo
Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson
Psycho
For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. --Jim Emerson
The Birds
Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however, The Birds is also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963, The Birds has grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films. --Robert Horton
Marnie
Sean Connery, fresh from the second Bond picture, From Russia with Love, is a Philadelphia playboy who begins to fall for Tippi Hedren's blonde ice goddess only when he realizes that she's a professional thief; she's come to work in his upper-crust insurance office in order to embezzle mass quantities. His patient program of investigation and surveillance has a creepy, voyeuristic quality that's pure Hitchcock, but all's lost when it emerges that the root of Marnie's problem is phobic sexual frigidity, induced by a childhood trauma. Luckily, Sean is up to the challenge. As it were. Not even D.H. Lawrence believed as fervently as Hitchcock in the curative properties of sexual release. --David Chute
Torn Curtain
Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense of Torn Curtain is by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business. --Ali Davis
Topaz
Alfred Hitchcock hadn't made a spy thriller since the 1930s, so his 1969 adaptation of Leon Uris's bestseller seemed like a curious choice for the director. But Hitchcock makes Uris's story of the West's investigation into the Soviet Union's dealings with Cuba his own. Frederick Stafford plays a French intelligence agent who works with his American counterpart (John Forsythe) to break up a Soviet spy ring. The film is a bit flat dramatically and visually, and there are sequences that seem to occupy Hitchcock's attention more than others. A minor work all around, with at least two alternative endings shot by Hitchcock. --Tom Keogh
Frenzy
Alfred Hitchcock's penultimate film, written by Anthony Shaffer (who also wrote Sleuth), this delightfully grisly little tale features an all-British cast minus star wattage, which may have accounted for its relatively slim showing in the States. Jon Finch plays a down-on-his-luck Londoner who is offered some help by an old pal (Barry Foster). In fact, Foster is a serial killer the police have been chasing--and he's framing Finch. Which leads to a classic Hitchcock situation: a guiltless man is forced to prove his innocence while eluding Scotland Yard at the same time. Spiked with Hitchcock's trademark dark humor, Frenzy also features a very funny subplot about the Scotland Yard investigator (Alec McCowen) in charge of the case, who must endure meals by a wife (Vivien Merchant) who is taking a gourmet-cooking class. --Marshall Fine
Family Plot
Alfred Hitchcock's final film is understated comic fun that mixes suspense with deft humor, thanks to a solid cast. The plot centers on the kidnapping of an heir and a diamond theft by a pair of bad guys led by Karen Black and William Devane. The cops seem befuddled, but that doesn't stop a questionable psychic (Barbara Harris) and her not overly bright boyfriend (Bruce Dern, in a rare good-guy role) from picking up the trail and actually solving the crime. Did she do it with actual psychic powers? That's part of the fun of Harris's enjoyably ditsy performance. --Marshall Fine

Poor packaging........2007-06-01
This is a great set minus the annoying packaging. As someone mentioned earlier the DVD cases are fitted to go in a certain order and if they don't go in in that order then they get stuck and the edges of the DVD cases get frayed. The corners of the cases get frayed anyway because the cases are a paper and cardboard-based binding with the plastic DVD holders glued on to them. So I put them in spine first now. Open and close them enough times and you get those white, worn edges on the spine. Another problem with the cases is that the plastic glued on part that hold the DVDs in place are notorious for getting de-glued. Yet another thing. . .one disc is now not holding in the case properly. How could I remedy this problem? Buy an entire new set??? The door on the velvet box doesn't snap shut in anyway so if you hold the wrong side down. . .the DVDs will fall out. So watch out. The velvet box looks and feels nice but it collects dust very easily and is not easily cleanable. I tried to brush off some of the dust and the silvery logos and such began to flake off.
A REALLY NICE COLLECTION - A GREAT GIFT.......2007-05-23
Not only does this collection have some of Hitchcock's best movies, it also comes in a REALLY nice felt box and nice DVD cases. Makes an excellent gift.
Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection.......2007-05-08
This is an excellent collection. It doesn't have all of Hitchcock's greats, it's missing Strangers on a Train, Notorious and Rebecca, but its hands down the best collection assembled of his movies from the 40's and on. There are some great extras as well. I highly recommend this collection.

Almost as welcome as a shaker full of martinis, The Complete Thin Man Collection represents an eagerly awaited DVD milestone for fans of the fizzy MGM movie series. The best film in the series came first: The Thin Man (1934), W.S. Van Dyke's marvelous adaptation of a Dashiell Hammet novel. The movie gods were in a generous mood when they paired William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, the upper-class sophisticates whose sleuthing escapades somehow joined the classic form of the whodunit with the giddyup of screwball comedy. Among the series' many attributes, one of its most radical notions was the idea that a married couple might find each other delightful and view life as a goofy adventure together.
It is common wisdom that the Thin Man sequels adhere to the law of diminishing returns, and while none of the follow-ups reach the diamond level of the first film, all afford pleasures. There's the cocktail-swilling chemistry of Powell and Loy, for one thing, as well as the considerable satisfaction of average movies made during the studio system: the craftsmanship of studio hands, and a gallery of terrific character actors filling in supporting roles. First sequel After the Thin Man (1936) is very good, with the couple in San Francisco and a supporting part for rising player James Stewart. The scenery moves again, to Long Island, for the rather impudently-titled Another Thin Man (1939), which adds baby Nick, Jr., to the mix (a "bad idea," thought Pauline Kael, perhaps a sign of the domestication of the series).
Shadow of the Thin Man (1941) sets the action around a racetrack, and is the last of the series to be directed by the fast-working Van Dyke. The Thin Man Goes Home (1944) finds Nick escorting family to his parents' house for a visit. Song of the Thin Man (1947) engagingly adds a jazz milieu to the Charles's detective work; at this point, Nick, Jr. was played by child star Dean Stockwell. The series stuck with certain staples: the unveiling of the guilty party, a wirehaired terrier named Asta (who became a star in its own right), and booze. When Nick opines, in the first film, that a dry martini should always be shaken to "waltz time," you know why audiences fell in love with these guilt-free comedies. --Robert Horton
Description
The sparkling series featured the irresistible William Powell and Myrna Loy chemistry as husband and wife sleuths who solved murders with the aid of their wire-haired terrier, Asta. Set in the glamorous world of 1930s upper-class Manhattan, The Thin Man and its sequels established the standard for witty comedy, clever dialogue and urbane one upmanship. The 7-Disc set includes THE THIN MAN, AFTER THE THIN MAN, ANOTHER THIN MAN, SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN, SONG OF THE THIN MAN, THE THIN MAN GOES HOME, and the ALIAS NICK & NORA bonus documentary disc.
Customer Reviews:
Love the Thin Man.......2007-06-09
If you like mystery and comedy together than this is the collection for you. Myna Loy and William Powell are so good together, they should be up there with Hepburn and Tracy, Bogie and Bacall. I know they made alot of movies together beside the Thin Man series. The Documentary disc is really good because you can't find to much information on William Powell anymore and that is a shame because he was always one of my favorite stars. I loved all the movies in this collection and so glad that I added it to mine and you will be too...
Nick and Nora and Asta too!.......2007-05-30
This is a perfect box set containing all six movies of the popular Thin Man series. The first movie was based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett and teamed the great William Powell and wonderful Myrna Loy for the second time. Their first feature, also released in 1934, was "Manhatten Melodrama." To say that the pair exuded chemistry is an understatement. Though the best of friends, Powell and Loy, were never romantically linked. This did not stop fans from believing that they were. And why not, Powell and Loy managed to create an image of marriage that is as sexy as any courtship. In many romantic comedies, the dramatic tension ebbs when the romantic pair gets together. Powell and Loy manage to transcend this limitation, not only in these films, but also in seven others which run the gamut from comedy to melodrama.
The Thin Man films also owe a great deal to the writing, Hammett continued to be somewhat involved in the early spin offs from the original, but the series also benefited from the scripts produced by Albert Hacket and Francis Goodrich, who were married in real life. This point of view probably contributed to the success of series as a whole.
This boxed set contains all of the movies in the series along with biographies of Powell and Loy. There is also an episode of the 1950s TV series which only goes to show just how well the original film series was executed.
The films range from excellent to good. The sixth film in the series probably is the weakest of the lot, It appears that the producers were attempting to inject elements of film noir into the light hearted detective series and this just does not work. However, Powell and Loy managed to turn in excellent performances which rise above the problems with the script and its execution.
Probably the only thing that would make this boxed set better would be if it included the other seven films which starred Powell and Loy since they are always interesting, no matter what the subject matter.
ole movie buff.......2007-05-14
great cant say enough about this series. loved the thin man movies as a kid and still do. Wish there were more
Nick and Nora Review.......2007-05-08
The entire series depicts the engaging relationship that Nick and Nora Charles have; played by William Powell and Myrna Loy, they are coyly sexy.
The suave William Powell is always charming and Myrna Loy is sexy without trying to be. While the subsequent movies are short on story line, the husband and wife banter make up for it. They all represent the old fashioned "whodunit" black and white movies we grew up loving where the star gathers all the characters together into a room and we discover who the guilty party is.
Charming..............

Shadow Riders.......2007-03-15
I enjoyed the movie very much. I'm a huge fan of Tom Selek.
Tom Selleck Rides Tall in the Saddle.......2007-03-10
Team tall, handsome Tom Selleck with a Louis L'Amour classic, toss in Katherine Ross and Sam Elliott and you have western romance at its finest. Tom is one of these wonderful actors who is comfortable whether in the saddle or driving a red Porsche. He's totally believable. I would say integrity, honesty, and doing what's right is the trademark of the roles Tom Selleck chooses and this movie is a winner. It has romance, tension, conflict, good guys, bad guys and a happy ending. I highly recommend this movie. It's a keeper to be watched more than once.

Keeping the western genre alive.......2007-03-08
I thought this movie did a fine job of keeping up the tradition of the old John Wayne, John Ford westerns. It was fast paced, the dialog was quite real, and I was impressed by the attention to detail in costume and scenery. I was especially impressed, being a civil war nut, in the port-rayal of the Confederate Major played by Geoffrey Lewis. He was not the villian of the piece, yet what he was doing was wrong. I loved the way his charactor reverted to the true southern gentleman whenever confronting Katherine Ross, until he realized his cause with her at least was lost. A fine film, although having the same three men play the brothers here as well as in the Sacketts was a bit strange. But they did a fine job, and Ben Johnson always did impress me as a bit of a rogue even though he usually played a good guy. Well done by all.
The Shadow Riders.......2007-01-10
I truly enjoyed this Louis Lamour film. I love westerns and was a big fan of John Wayne. I see Tom Selleck as the closest actor to emulate The Duke in his presence on the screen.
Good western with a strong cast.......2007-01-05
I am a very big Western fan, while this movie is entertaining I thought that it was a little short on action. But, if your a Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot fan (as i am) this is a wonderful addition to your western colletion.

A mixed bag that received mixed reviews when released in 1994, this lavish film works overtime to honor the spirit and style of the vintage pulp novels and radio shows that made The Shadow a household name in the 1930s and '40s. Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability "to cloud men's minds." A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still, The Shadow is true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling. --Jeff Shannon

Remade as Batman Begins........2007-06-26
THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST SUPER HERO MOVIES EVER MADE. Even Remo Williams was better. At least Remo Williams had some humor and heart.
BATMAN BEGINS SEEMS LIKE RIP OFF OF THIS MOVIE, BUT SO MUCH BETTER. If you have seen Batman Begins, you have seen this movie. A guy living in the underworld in some Asian mountains find the light with a guru. He returns to the big city as a rich playboy and fights crime. He ends up fighting those who trained under the same guru. Although The Shadow did it first, and Batman Begins is a copycat, Batman Returns is a much better movie.
I really like Alec Baldwin, but in this movie, he is a cardboard character. How he turns from bad to good is never shown, it just happens. He really doesn't show any emotion during the whole movie. He is a lot like the character he makes fun of in 30 Rock.
Not much is done with the concept of The Shadow. There is one short episode near the beginning of the movie tha shows what The Swhadow is all about, but it isn't very thrilling or interesting. He just captures some criminals on a bridge, but there is no background to draw you into the story.
After that, it is more a supernatural story, and not much to do with The Shadow. A much better movie would have been to explore more about The Shadow, just like Batman Begins gives you a rich story about Batman, who he was and how he fought crime. But, it also gives you a backgrind story about the criminals he fights so there is tension.
The love story in this movie is also very weak.
This movie was killed by critics and was a bomb at the box office. But, sometimes the critics can be wrong and the movie fans might miss a winner. You can decide if you want to take the chance.
Lots of surprises.......2007-05-13
This movie has fast paced action, good acting with a touch of the exotic. Based on an radio series. I liked it!
Brought back my childhood radio daze . . ........2007-04-25
I really liked this movie. I saw it in the theater and several times on DVD and VHS. When I was a kid in the 40's this was one of my favorite radio shows. It worked then because of my imagination and the talent of those radio actors and writers. The later black and white movies were a disappointment because of the lack of special effects, so they weren't convincing at all. Just a guy in a black baggy outfit with the other actors pretending not to see him. This version had it all. The right guy in the starring role, Alec Baldwin as the handsome Lamont Cranson/Shadow. Penelope Ann Miller as the vivacious Margo Lane and a great supporting cast with John Lone as the villain, the great Tim Curry, Ian McKellan before The X-Men and Gandalf, Peter Boyle, Jonathan Winters, et. al. The look of the film was excellent, the comic relief really well done and the writer David Koepp deserved a big slap on the back. This is one of those films that I will look at over and over in the future. The film deserved better and I think better advertising might have created a better financial performance, maybe one matching the performance of all who participated in making the film.
In The Shadow.......2007-02-09
A marvellous escape into the yesterdays of my childhood. A reminder of a simpler less complicated time when good versus evil was a clear-cut battle with good triumphing in this eternal battle. Yes I enjoyed the film and the acting was great and the cinemaphotography was vivid and eye-catching. The setting almost surrealistic. Overall a fascinating experience.
The SHADOW.......2007-02-03
I will never be able to understand why THE SHADOW (1994) is so underrated. Sure, there are things I would have changed, but--the acting was convincing, the special effects dazzling, the dialog witty--and it the film was appropriately set in New York.
The film borrows from both the pulps and the radio show. The Shadow is appropriately clad with an eerie, echoing voice. Shiwan Khan is properly cruel but humorous (how can a Tibetan have pupils THAT big??)
This is not exactly a family movie. There is some language, a scene with scantily-clad concubines. Oh, and the demon-possessed knife called the Purba.
Overall, a faithfully adapted crime fighter/superhero movie. Highly recommended.

.. nice idea but..........2007-04-15
When I came across this movie two key words caught my attention...1 - vagina... 2 - director's cut...I love Gabriella Hall but this movie is kak...it is a nice idea but again not cleverly executed... lots of nudity but not that erotic...it looked too 'cut' for a directors cut... I did not enjoy the movie...the key words did not do the trick...
Clear cutting of Sherwood Forest.......2007-04-10
Video quality could be better and the appearances of featured 'star'were fewer than expected.
Robin Hood it's not.......2006-08-05
I spent most of the time in fast forward, and don't think that I missed any of the plot. I gave it a 2 because it was not so bad that I turned it off. A good movie to put on in the backround, if you are not going to pay it much attention.
Virgins right...........2006-07-25
not a great acting movie but of course you don't see these kind of movies for the acting but it is very comedic. the scenes are really good and all of the women are hot there isn't one woman who is unattractive in this film. its as good as softcore can get if this was hardcore it probably would have been even a better title but still a good buy if you like this style. but this movie is an excellent choice and funny if your looking for comedy and a little bit of action.
Virgins of..Worthy.........2005-09-14
I am into collecting all the older movies such as this and find
them funny as well as interesting and the ones I have bought are
becoming part of my collection. I would recommend this one if
you are into a funny, sexy, nude version of Robin Hood.

Created for the 20th anniversary of the popular Robotech continuity, The Shadow Chronicles Movie picks up where 85-episode series ended. In 2044 A.D., humanity is at war with the alien Invid, who occupy most of the Earth. The Invid ruler takes her people to "a higher plane" to escape the Children of the Shadows, aliens dedicated to the destruction of any race that possesses Protoculture. (Illogically, they fear the power of Protoculture, but they can destroy its users.) New characters and ones from the original series battle the Children of Shadows until a cliffhanger ending that makes it clear a sequel must be in production.
Although it helped to create the audience for anime in America, the original Robotech was an anomaly: a Japanese show that never aired in Japan. Producers at Harmony Gold edited together the unrelated series Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super-dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross. The Shadow Chronicles Movie is also an anomaly: an "anime" feature made primarily in the U.S. and Korea. Although they've added lots of flashy CG effects to the space battles, the film lacks the qualities that made the series a hit. Like Star Wars, Robotech used an interstellar conflict as a backdrop for a tale about friendship, romance, and heroism. The filmmakers spend the first half-hour of Shadow Chronicles filling in background material for new viewers; the rest is so packed with exposition and action, there's no time to get to know the characters--or care about them. The movie will appeal primarily to fans of the series and its manifestations in games, toys, novels, etc. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

The Return of a Classic Series.......2007-06-23
In 1985, a new series debuted in the United States. Robotech. It was the first of its kind: an animated serial science fiction epic that asked the question: What will we do when we discover we are not alone in the universe? Beginning with the crash landing of an abandoned alien ship on Earth in the year 1999, and ending with the liberation of Earth from the alien race of the Invid in 2044, the original Robotech series charts in dramatic narrative the lives, losses, and sometimes, deaths of the characters over the course of three terrible wars between human beings and aliens.
While the original series ascended to a truly legendary status as a masterpiece of intelligent animated storytelling, many story issues were deliberately left unresolved. A second animated series was intended to answer those questions, but due to the fickle nature of network programming, it was abandoned, leaving those questions unanswered for a generation.
Now, more than 20 years later, the series enduring popularity with its fans has finally garnered a sequel: The Shadow Chronicles.
The movie opens by replaying the events leading up to the end of the Third Robotech War, abeit from a different perspective than the original, and answers some of the burning questions that fans of the original Robotech series have wanted to know for years.
Humanity's future is jeopardy. Even though humanity has secured an empty victory over the Invid, who have now fled Earth, there is no time for rest. Scott Bernard and Ariel (human and Invid characters from the original series) discover they have been played for fools all along, and that a mysterious foe has been orchestrating events between their races from behind the scenes, hoping for their mutual extermination - and now emerges from the shadows bent on finishing the job.
In the tradition of the original, the movie is dark, gritty, and deadly serious, dealing with many themes of the human condition while telling a fast paced story.
It's pacing and depth are its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. The film is too fast paced to catch everything in the first viewing, and its plot is a result of subsequent (and necessary) dependence on knowledge of events in the original series.
If you are a fan of the original, this is definately recommended, but if you are entirely new to the Robotech story, I'd suggest watching the original series first.
Decent.......2007-06-10
I have been a Robotech fan since the original series, and I was cautious about getting too excited about this DVD. I saw what happened to the Star Wars series and was prepared for the worst. The good thing was that Shadow Chronicles is not the worst. Nor is it the best. I think that the idea is well intentioned, but they just don't have the time to develop the story, the way that they did in the original series. Its hard when you only have 2 hours or less, to tell such a grand story. And, that is what made ROBOTECH great. The story, though grand in scope, was about the people that were taking part in these wars. Any form of storytelling that does not have the time to tell this kind of story is severly at a disadvantage, and so it is for the SHadow Chronicles. ROBOTECH is too fantastical, and the story too well developed for a DVD to come along and explain everything that is happening and make us feel for the characters, and tell a meaningful story. This is the weakness of the SHadow Chronicles. It means well, but it really doesn't get anywhere. Viewers of the original series will get a kick out of seeing old characters again, and I enjoyed that aspect. But, these experienced viewers will also get tired of the retelling of the story. New viewers will undoubtedly be asking, "what?", because the story of Robotech is kinda out there, if you don't watch the original series. Oh, and the computer graphics, once again, fail to impress. I hate computer graphics in movies and anime. Especially when I used to love to watch the art of the Mecha. Now they are laughable video game creatures. Very disapointing, but I understand that the cost would be too great to animate the battle scenes. The art overall is not great, but is decent, and really is eqaul to the original series in quality (some of the episodes in Macross were pretty raw). Anyway, a fun little trip for hardcore fans, but missable for everyone else.
Robotech returns.......2007-06-05
Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles was a very anticipated sequel, and due to this fact I was suprised at how much it satisfied me. It was a long wait since I first joined their website and had heard rumors of production of a sequel, and after I had heard the stories of The Sentinels failure and RT:3000, this was actually much better than those two failures of the past. Robotech promises to be a living work now, and this movie will set the groundwork for more animation in Robotech. I liked the subtle character relations, and the humor, and the mecha, though the computer graphics leave a little more artistic character to be desired. I however was disappointed in the slight but obvious differences in the character designs from the original, such as very similar body types that seemed slightly cookie-cutter and not as I remember, but that's putting a fan's expectations above the reality that they had to hire different animators after the 20+ year gap between this project and the 1985 TV series. Also I never cared for the Hadonites as they are too unimaginative for villains. RT:TSC is worth watching more than once though.
20 Bucks wasted.......2007-06-04
Don't bother buying this. As a fan since 1986 I was VERY disappointed in this so called movie. The computer generated graphics are an insult to the Robotech name. New people are introduced and no one bothers to explain who they are or how they got there. Scott acts like a wimp. Admiral Hunter has long white hair?!?! The Regis gives up and leaves out of "kindness"?
DON'T waste your money. This DVD is not worth it.
Excelent movie, and must have dvd.......2007-05-27
Excelent movie from the start to the end. Awesome graphics and story line, cant wait for the next part.

That's where young Charlie (Teresa Wright) lives with her parents and two younger siblings, and where murder is little more than a topic of morbid conversation for their mystery-buff neighbor (Hume Cronyn). Charlie was named after her favorite uncle, who has just arrived for an extended visit, and at first Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) gets along famously with his admiring niece. But the film's chilling prologue has already revealed Uncle Charlie's true identity as the notorious Merry Widow Murderer, and the suspense grows almost unbearable when young Charlie's trust gives way to gradual dread and suspicion. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. And, of course, it's all done in pure Hitchcockian style. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Shadow of a Doubt.......2007-06-25
Hitchcock shows us how close to home treachery may be found in "Shadow", a subtle yet riveting psychological thriller about a small-town serial killer. The director himself considered this one of his finest achievements. Penned by playwright Thornton Wilder and based on the infamous "Merry Widow Killer" case, "Shadow" maintains a nerve-rattling mood of menace throughout. Highlighted by a chilling performance from Cotten, this film gives diabolical new meaning to the adage, "You can't pick your family."
Norman Rockwell meets Norman Bates.......2007-06-14
In my mind, Alfred Hitchcock was the greatest director in moviedom - bar none - and he considered this to be his favorite film. There are several reasons why this was so. First and foremost is the movie's insidious nature. We are taken to a stereotypical Mid-American town and are presented a scene of idyllic calm - Norman Rockwell brought to the big screen. However, all is not well as the center point of the film, Uncle Charlie, turns out to have a very dark side indeed. His adoring niece comes to slowly realize that things are not what they seem and that her "sainted uncle" is in fact a cold-blooded killer. From there, the suspense builds steadily until the film's climatic end. Norman Rockwell, meet Norman Bates.
The Truth About Charlie,.......2007-04-04
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
"Shadow of a Doubt" (1943), the story of a serial murderer as a loving uncle is the movie which Hitchcock himself had declared as his favorite. This movie is quite a departure from Hitchcock's previous Hollywood productions. For the first half, it is an intimate family dramedy that describes a typical American family in a typical small town, USA which in this film is called Santa Rosa, CA. Hitch said about the movie, "I am extremely anxious to avoid the conventional small-town American scene and the stock figures that have been seen in so many films." Much of the film was shot on location in a real California small town far away from the studio. The director worked closely with the famous writer Thornton Wilder on the screen (Oscar nomination) about a charming attractive young man (Joseph Cotten) who after many years comes to Santa Rosa to visit with the family of his older sister whom he truly loved. He brings into the lives of his relatives, especially his older niece and namesake Charlie (Teresa Wright) excitement and joy. Soon things begin look puzzling and even grim when two undercover detectives from a big city on the East Coast show up in Santa Rosa and reveal to Charlie who by the words of her father, "has brains" and the power of observation that her beloved uncle Charlie may be an infamous "Merry Widows murderer" on the run. The girl does not want to believe the detectives but she can't help noticing her uncle's strange behavior, his sudden and scary mood changes. The inscription on a gorgeous emerald ring he gave her as a gift makes her think of a previous owner of the pricey jewelry. She grows increasingly suspicious of the uncle who loves his niece but he loves his freedom much, much more...Unbearable tension builds up, leading to the series of accidents and to hair-raising climax in the best traditions of Hitchcock's movies.
Roles of a lifetime!!.......2006-12-26
Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright both play the roles of a lifetime in this Hitchcock classic!!
damn, I'd love to see this on a big screen!!
Shadow Across an Innocent Age.......2006-07-18
A film of subtleties and evil in plain sight, Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt is a slow moving character study of young "Charlie," the namesake niece of elegant but sinister uncle Charles. Formerly of Philadelphia, his visit to a younger sister in California is the kind of long visit by a relative everyone dreads in hindsight. Situated and contrasted by the light and seeming perfect American middle class small town of Petaluma, suave Charles Oakley (Joseph Cotten) is all fine suits and manners of a bachelor gentleman.
Wholesome Theresa Wright is "Young Charlie," an average, and purposeless young woman whose guileless world has bored her by its failure to have meaning, although she is the cause. As a member of a family where everyone talks over one another without heeding, the kids prattle, the wife babbles, and the family's men persist in mindless discussions over how to plot a murder effectively as family dinner conversation. Somehow this oddness is translated as the norm in Hitchcock's translation of small town. A film of many dialogues, only one voice is audible without interruption: Uncle Charles. His dinner table monologue is most menacing as he describes the "useless, fat, women" who he sees as less than human and deserving of death. Until this moment, young Charlie had idolized her uncle until doubt is created by a detective played by MacDonald Cary. One of two detectives on a national hunt for the "Merry Widow" serial murderer, they have tracked the suspicious Uncle Charles across country to his unsuspecting sister's home and family. Once the seeds of doubt are sown, Charlie's dreamlike idealization of her perfect uncle and his world becomes shattered by her suspicion. Charlie no longer can fantasize about her dreamy uncle who she has erotic longings that can never be consummated. Once he realizes his charade is over, Uncle Charles rips away the curtain of sleepwalking in Charlie's perfect world with terrible consequence. The perfect world is not a nice place as Charlie's revelation is made all the more grusome through her uncle's warped eyes. As the evil grows more apparent, Charlie attempts to shield her storybook family by keeping them ignorant of his murderous past, but is it at a cost to her own happiness and life?
Hitchcock acknowledged the film was his personal favorite and it defines the notions of suspense, noir, and thriller without blood or visual carnage. A literate script by Thorton Wilder (Our Town) alludes to violence that is only suggested never seen. Through the physical presence of the brilliant character actor, Joseph Cotton (Citizen Kane, Portrait of Jennie), the menace and diabolic threat to the snow white, virginal Theresa Wright is alluded in eye, body language, and especially his hands. Sophisticated and cerebral, Hitch was playing with audiences creating a masterpiece of normalcy and idealized family values under a looming presence that cast a shadow of a doubt. Classic, for every suspense library.

The Truth.......2007-02-17
I can't beleve you people think that on the English version Maria was not killed but arested. That is not true! When that retired policeman was telling Scarlet and Mr. Stuart his story about what happened at the ark fifty years ago, it showed him pointing a gun at Maria and when she pulled the lever, yes they did skip the scean when she was shot but after that, the guy was crying and regreting he ever shot her, he wouldn't be doing that if nothing happened to her, besides he was pointing a gun at her and telling her to get away from the lever and she disobays him what else would you have expected to happen. When he said they took her away, he ment her dead body because they were camanded to take the casualty's bodies back to Earth to have them identified and that is when Professor Garald found her name in the list of those who died when the ark was shut down. If Maria was still alive and was arested as you guys say she was, even 4kids would know that Shadow wouldn't waist his time trying to destroy the earth, he would go strait to the prison that was holding her and break her out.
This is movie is awesome!.......2007-02-07
Man, these shows are so great together, I personally think Project Shadow should've been a full-length movie and released into theaters. Obviouslly, there's some parts that need to be edited, but there's many scenes in it, especially the end, that make it look like it should've been a full-length film and released into theaters.
Sonic Adventure 2 Adaptation!.......2007-01-29
To start things off, let me just say that Sonic Adventure 2, or SA2, is my absolute very favorite video game. EVER. Better even than Pokemon! (For me, that is definitely saying something)
While there were still some differences between SA2 and the Sonic X adapt, I have to say I loved it. Still the same blue blur that rocked the world with a Sonic Boom 15 years ago. Amazing. 15 years, and he's still making new game-totally awesome. Despite what those so called 'profession' reviewers say, I loved the new Sonic '06 game, Sonic Heroes was immensely fun, (Who couldn't love it? Totally awesome Neo Metal Sonic claiming that he was 'the one true Sonic.') and Shadow the Hedgehog had an awesome story.
But, now for the review. The Project Shadow SA2 adapt is probably one o the deepest Sonic stories ever. Shadow the hedgehog is a Mewtwo-like character, planning to gain revenge for the death of his best and only friend-a girl named Maria.
The military, GUN, mercilessly murdered her, and now, Shadow aims for revenge! Although, in the dub (English translated version is what 'dub' means) Maria is apparently arrested. Well, thats what some people have said anyway. IMO (In My Opinion) the dub implied it well enough that Maria was shot, and not arrested (They never explicitly said she was killed, but they never say she was arrested, just taken away. Of course, that could be a metaphor, and they showed a scene with the GUN soldier with a, duh, shotgun, and Maria...eh, I won't spoil it) So, yes, Maria died.
Its very emotional, (Though not as much as the game) and very, very good. Many scenes are very good, one in particular where Knuckles hijacks a space shuttle becuase the Master Emerald flew out the window. Strange, I know xD.
There is also a very cool battle between Sonic and Shadow as well. Very fun, so don't miss it!
So, a brief and spoiler free summary of the DVD? Sure! Why not? Sonic has been framed by a mysterious black hedgehog, and is on the run form the military. Meanwhile, this same hedgehog teams up with Dr. Omele-I mean, Eggman, and Rouge the Bat. When a dangerous space station known as the ARK prepares to fire a cannon into earth, can Sonic stop it? And what does a professor named Gerald and a girl named Maria have to do with this? Why, watch and you'll see~!
Despite the editing that the dubbers did to it, its still very, very good, but the game itsdelf is the very best. If you want the absolute ultimate SA2 experience, then just go buy the game itself.
All in all, this is a very deep story and any respectable Sonic fan should watch this DVD. And as a side note, fans of SATAM never fear, for a SATAM DVD has been released! To anyone who's missed the 'way past cool' Sonic the Hedgehog Freedom Fighter, buy that DVD as well as this one.
Oh yeah, the moon gets blown up.
Until next time! Sayonara, readers!

Ok.......2007-06-10
This movie is a bit boring, typical late teen movie, no money have to save the building before the bank claims it back. The brunette is the only girl worth watching.
Not recommened.
Exotic House, hm.......2005-09-14
This like the others has plenty of nudity but leaves something to be desired... I did enjoy it and have added it to my collection...
about the movie legacy of lust.............2005-01-31
This title is also one of the better titles of Art series films/movies for Home video which might interest some whom are potential buyers on their mindset. The story is bascially about wax figurine in their sexual posisition comes alive after an amulet of sex is put at their neck (not going to elaborate any further to make it more attractive to people whom wish to know the story). Sexual content, in this film/movie, which are numerous are strongly put across the screen rather than a more story based. What makes this title goes unrated at this point of discussion is the lesbian sex between the two alive wax figurine and four lesbian sex which follows next. (I meant with the lesbian scenes missing would be just a normal R rated). There are some other movies that comes in this form with story based which includes sexual intrigue(2000), illicit confessions(1998), play time(1994), forbidden (2001), claire dolan (1998), Fast lane in Vegas/Fast lane in Malibu, Jan Dara, Untold Scandal, Romance and Passion, Crash (1996), Close your eyes and hold me (2001), the lover and some other EROS titles. These erotic films/movies that I have reviewed so far is a "blessing" during the long wait for time which is more or less about to come true to the dreams....so far so good. I hope the recommendation is useful for those whom are interested ion these titles of movies/films. Enjoy....:-)
Good, early, Surrender softcore........2004-04-29
Exotic House of Wax is one of Surrender's earlier titles and was made around the same time as Femalien, Virtual Encounters 1, and Virtual Encounters 2 (there's even a small relationship between EHOW's story and the one in Femalien). It isn't in the same league as those titles, but it's still good.
There are 6 sex scenes. 3 are boy/girl. 2 are boy/girl/girl. 1 is girl/girl/girl/girl. There's also a short shower scene with Blake Pickett. The best scene was the lesbian foursome. That's Jacqueline Lovell's only scene, but she was great. Romeo and Juliet's boy/girl scene and Blake Pickett's boy/girl scene were also exceptional. The other three scenes were decent, but nothing memorable. The actors/actresses stayed in their costumes a little too long for my liking and the camera was too close to the action a lot of the time. Also, this being a Surrender title, there was no audio other than the music during the sex scenes. Although 6 scenes doesn't sound like much, Surrender's scenes run longer than your typical softcore title. However, I felt this video did devote a little too much of its running time to the story.
All but two of the women were beautiful and had great bodies. Those other two were not what I would call unattractive, but just didn't compare to the other women.
I'm a big Jacqueline Lovell fan and consider her scene second only to her lesbian scene from Femalien. For that reason alone, I consider this a worthwhile purchase.
I have one gripe. The DVD is authored very poorly. There are no timecodes and no way to jump to specific scenes from the menu. There are chapter stops, so it's not as bad as it could be, but to not include those two features is just lazy.
And finally, I want to make it clear that I am reviewing the most recent DVD release from Shadow. They did get the right version for this one. It is the unrated version, not some chopped up R rated version.

For two years Marc Singer lived with the people who make their home in the tunnels beneath Penn Station in New York, creating an unflinching portrait of a part of society that is literally and figuratively beneath our notice.
"You'd be surprised what the human mind and body can adjust to," says Tito, one of the tunnel dwellers. He and his neighbors are homeless, but the tunnels offer them a degree of safety that doesn't exist on the streets above. In this strange place they manage to achieve a remarkable degree of domesticity, building shelters, keeping pets, and cooking meals.
Singer has an eye for telling images, such as Dee dragging a sofa along the train tracks like Sisyphus rolling his stone in Hell. With its grainy black-and-white photography and haunting soundtrack, this is a surprisingly beautiful film, but it is never sentimental, nor does it try to impose a false nobility on its subjects. Dark Days simply shows us a world that we never knew existed, and in this simplicity lies its power. --Simon Leake
Description
"Dark Days" is the multi-award winning documentary from Marc Singer about a community of homeless people living in a train tunnel beneath Manhattan. The film depicts a way of life that is unimaginable to most of those who walk the streets above. In the pitch black of the tunnel, rats swarm through piles of garbage as high-speed trains leaving Penn Station tear through the darkness. For some of those who have gone underground, it has been home for as long as twenty-five years. The director abandoned life on the outside to spend all of his time in the tunnels, making it his home for two years. Surprisingly entertaining and deeply moving, "Dark Days" is an eye-opening experience that shatters the myths of homelessness with the strength and universality of the people the film represents.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!!!.......2007-06-19
This film is the antithesis of our seemingly endless obsession with the vacuous lives of rich and famous celebrities. This film examines the lives of people who are infinitely more interesting and far more resourceful than Paris Hilton or Oprah Winfrey could ever be. I must admit to not having the highest opinion of homeless people prior to seeing DARK DAYS, because I often felt like a magnet to which panhandlers were always attracted. It got to be a bit much at times. However, I now feel somewhat petty about getting angry with people who out of desperation (sometimes fueled by drug or alcohol problems) approached me for money. DARK DAYS opened my eyes to the plight of the homeless more than any other film I've seen. It did such a wonderful job of humanizing its subjects. When I watched the "making of" featurette on the DVD I understood how it accomplished that feat - the filmmaker lived among his homeless subjects in rat infested tunnels for an extended period of time and, in effect, became one of them. It's very obvious that he earned their respect and trust - something that really comes through in the film. In fact, I consider Marc Singer, the film's director, to be a remarkable human being. I sincerely believe he did this great work of art to help his homeless friends get out of the dark, dank tunnels in which so many of them lived for over a decade. My hat is off to Mr. Singer. What a great man!!
See this film. You won't regret it.
mandatory viewing.......2007-04-10
Consider this mandatory viewing. Forget Paris Hilton and all that crap; THIS is reality TV. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I promise you won't regret watching it. It is enlightening. (It's not all grim either, there is humor too.)
This may be all of us, after a cataclysm.......2007-03-29
Thoughtfully done by an apparent empath, without hurrying, without staging. The pace seems to faithfully replicate the actual days lived by each person who was kind enough to let us into their lives. Well done.
Evocative film.......2007-03-07
DARK DAYS goes underground to show how the mole people in the tunnels of New York city live. By showing the homes that they've built and their attempts to yield power over their lives DARK DAYS emphasizes the universal need we all share for a sense of home.
As we shift through the dark space of their world that is at once claustrophobic and cavernous, we see the mundane rituals of ordinary life play out: cooking, raising pets, cleaning, and showering. The men (and one woman) of this film speak of a life lived autonomous from societal intervention. One senses that the filmmaker, and more adamantly the homeless themselves, are trying to convince us that here in the subterranean garbage disposal of life, their needs are being provided for by the trash of the world that is chewed up and spit out. In the film, these leftovers become a metaphor for the people themselves - as they revel in finding a treasure of discarded donuts, or show their opportunist nature by collecting cans for cash to buy heroin. As our waste becomes their livelihood, we start to see them more and more as individuals. "We're not homeless," one man tells us, "homeless is when you don't have a home." But then his friend corrects him. "Nah, you're still homeless. You just ain't helpless." But as the film progresses, we start to perceive something in the darkness, something invisible around the edges that keeps them buried underground; it's their addiction to drugs, and the memories of past lives that are fraught with anguish and suffering. They are lost souls - shadow people moving through an ethereal, timeless landscape.
I highly recommend this film.
Dark Days - Got Balls?.......2006-10-27
People live in the NYC subway. Are you freaking serious? That's awesome! We should all aplaud Marc Singer for making this documentary about real people who live down there. Why? Because I sure as hell wouldn't do it. Have you ever seen a NYC rat? They could eat your foot. Cinematically it doesn't even matter because the story is enough, but Singer does a great job given the circumstances. He even won the cinematography award at Sundance in 2000. I was a little shocked by that one. Just validates the expression, "only two kinds of people can afford to live in New York, millionaires and the homeless." I don't know who said that.
