The miracle about Miracle is that it gets so many details right in telling its 24-year-old story about the historic victory of the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympic Games. It's typical for Hollywood to compromise such period details as hairstyles and fashion when catering to a contemporary audience, but Miracle looks and feels right in every detail, capturing the downbeat mood of post-Watergate America while showing how obsessively determined Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) managed to assemble a once-in-a-lifetime team and whip them into a victorious frenzy over their Soviet champion opponents. With sharp support from Patricia Clarkson (as Brooks's wife) and Noah Emmerich (as his long-suffering assistant), Russell grounds the film with a well-balanced combination of aloofness, intimidation, and closely guarded strategy. No doubt the real Brooks (who died in a car accident shortly after filming completed) would have approved. Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history — the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of 26 undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned 20 of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Miracle - More than a Sports Story!.......2007-07-04

A story of powerful healing & believing, incredible human ability to achieve the "impossible" when using heart body and soul and working as a team, preparing and believing. Wonderfully inspiring, incredible coaching and spirit displayed by young men when our country needed this healing and unity. Love this movie and display of determination, belief, love, patriotism, and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars "On A Sheet Of Ice In Lake Placid, New York" ~ Knowing When It's Your Time.......2007-04-27

Who will ever forget that memorable Winter Olympics in `80 when a young, inexperienced U.S.A. hockey squad beat the juggernaut Russian team in the semi-finals on their way to the gold medal? Well if you have just watch this movie and rekindle the memory of what was unquestionable the ultimate moment in the history of American hockey.

Released in '04, the inspirational sports film `Miracle' is a nostalgic look back at a time before professionals took over the Olympic games and young, starry-eyed college kids reached for that one glorious moment of fame. Yes it's overly sentimental and just oozing with saccharine but deep down inside I think that's how most of us want to remember this game anyway. U.S.A. versus Russia, doesn't get any better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling.......2007-02-04

It is easy to summarize the plot behind this movie. It is about the 1980 U.S. hockey team that went all the way to gold in the Olympics at Lake Placid. What is harder to summarize is the era and feelings of the United States at that time, and just what a kick in the behind this game was for the U.S.

1980 was a very bad time. Inflation was horrible. We recently left Viet Nam, failing to accomplish whatever mission we had. Students kidnapped Americans from the embassy in Teheran. We suffered from a president who was tied to a politically motivated hotel break-in and from a president who was unable to effectively deal with politics in Washington, D.C.; then came the 1980 Olympic hockey team.

The hockey team of the Soviet Union was the dominant team for 20 years. They were favored to win the 1980 Olympics. The U.S. team might have a shot for bronze, if we were lucky. Instead, the U.S. team kept beating teams that "everyone" expected to beat the U.S. Americans began holding their breath as the team played each new opponent, and won. It was amazing. The gold medal game against Finland was almost an anti-climax after the game against the Soviet Union. While Coach Brooks was there to play hockey and go all the way, the biggest hurdle was going to be the tough, professional Soviet team.

This movie captures it all; the feeling of the era, details of the era, the thrill of each team victory, and Coach Brook's refusal to celebrate any victory until the truly important one. I was amazed at Kurt Russell's performance. He is compelling as Coach Brooks. Brooks is obsessed in his drive to make his team the best, and he skillfully transmits that obsession to his players. Kurt Russell was perfect for the role of Brooks, and it is one of his finest moments in a movie.

This movie is perfect for most members of the family, and may well serve as an inspiration for some family members. Some younger members of the family may be distressed by the violence of hockey, which is well replicated in this movie. You may not want to be eating while watching some portions of the movie.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars good uplifting movie.......2007-02-03

i like the perspective the movie tried to portray, that individual Olympians who are great at what they do are not representing themselves, but are representing their country. im really glad our hockey team won in those adverse times and that this movie was made to reflect a bit of the triumph they experienced.

purchased for our 6 yr old grandson who watches the military channel religiously. He know all the names of the fighter planes that are retired & in service. We watched this DVD twice while we were visiting. The filming is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps all over.......2007-05-08

On the topic of the NTSC disc possibly not playing in "multizone" players outside of zone 1, I am happy to say that my JVC home theatre system (in Zone 2, PAL television country South Africa) had no problem in playing it in it's full glory. Despite it being obvious that quite a bit of the move was "staged", it doesn't detract enough from sheer moments of power, where surround sound comes to its right like never before, to warrant it not being given 5 out of 5. The Windows High Definition product also creates visuals on my computer monitor that has not been matched closely by anything else ever.
Despite the high cost of having it sent all the way to South Africa, it has already a "money well spent" item to me. No regrets (on the contrary, constant pats on the back!) on having taken the chance to purchase this product!

3 out of 5 stars ok, but not great.......2007-03-27

The movie follows a fighter pilot sent to a elite training mission, however does not go into the more educational role as most IMAX movies do. It mainly tells a short story with no real details or plot line.

2 out of 5 stars Very weak narrative, but some nice takes.......2007-03-17

The narrative is very weak up to the point of being embarrassed for those who wrote it.. But--the takes are nice and it gives a pretty comprehensive overview of what the exercise is all about.

3 out of 5 stars Hollywood Gimmickry .......2007-03-12

I saw Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag on the USS Lexington museum in Corpus Christi, TX. At first I thought it was one on the most beautiful films ever made. But, I noticed some Hollywood gimmickry was afoot. In the dogfight scene, the pursuing F-16 didn't look right. Real dogfights are probably not that interesting in that computer guided missiles are fired many miles away so the aircraft never get that close. Also, in the live fire sequences, the bombs could not be seen and the explosions were too fiery. Wouldn't the target tank (as well as the camera) be destroyed?

Still, Fighter Pilot is an interesting film best seen at an IMAX theater with loud sound.

Description

A sprawling. Action-packed epic that sweeps off the pages of the Bible and across the screen recreating one of the most torrid tales of passion ever told, Gregory Peck delivers a commanding performance as David, King of the Israelites, who falls in love with Bathsheba (Susan Hayward), a beautiful woman- and wife of one of his captains. It's a story of sin and redemption, a searing saga of love as burning as the sands of the harsh landscape on which it was consummated. A love that violated the laws of man- and God. David, once the Chosen One, now risks God's wrath, his kingdom, and the life of Bathsheba, who may be stoned to death for his sin!

Product Description

A devastating story of war and a generation destroyed. In 1914 a group of German schoolboys, idealistic and inflamed with youthful patriotism, set off to fight in the "glorious" war. During their brutal basic training disenchantment begins; then, boarding a train for the front, they see the wounded being rushed back to hospitals. They begin to grasp the grim reality of war.

On their first night in action they come under heavy attack. In the trenches, they begin to fall. Their youth is stripped away by the violence, and the boys become as sullen as veterans.

When Paul (Richard Thomas) shoots a Frenchman and watches him die, he realizes the futility of the war. Wounded, he returns home to a different world, a place where he cannot fit in. Sent back into battle, he meets destiny on a day when the German High Command Communiqu states simply, All Quiet On The Western Front.

    Amazon.com

Taken from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front is a devastating portrait by Delbert Mann (Desire Under the Elms, Marty) of a small group of German soldiers throughout the World War I.

The star-studded cast is headed by Richard Thomas (The Waltons) as Paul Baumer, and includes such award-winning actors as Ernest Borgnine, Ian Holm, and Patricia Neal. As both narrator and star, Thomas occasionally seems to reincarnate his familiar John-Boy persona, but creates a character that has many more levels than that television alter ego. Watching Paul as he watches all of his high school buddies die is a highly emotional experience. He returns to his home a different person, conflicted in his feelings about the Army and war, evolving from an idealistic schoolboy to a fearful and humble veteran.

The scenery and costuming in this period piece are well done, and surely contributed to its winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for TV. Also contributing to the greatness of the film are the exceptional cinematography and special effects that, while realistically gruesome, truly emphasize the horrors of war. --Zachary Lively

5 out of 5 stars Great War Film!.......2007-05-25

This is one of the best war films ever made. I've seen the first version also. This film is an improvement over the original although the original was done well with what they had back in early years of film. What really makes this war film great is that it doesn't glorify war at all but shows you the death and destruction of war. This film should be mandatory in all high schools! The book is very good also. The book is more descriptive than the movie. What happens to Paul in this film is happening to our young men and women in Iraq right now!!

1 out of 5 stars The "Johnboy" version of AQWF is truly awful.......2007-05-01

This film might be okay for the general public or high school classroom, but this film brings almost nothing to the table for WWI buffs or lovers of the novel. It's hard to mention anything good about this film other than the fact that it is not as dated as the original film and is also in color.

Earnest Borgnine's casting as Kat is simply laughable. The boys' mentor in the trenches, the "old man," was "old" only in comparison to the teen-aged boys who surrounded him. The battle scenes do not inspire fear or horror. Equipment, uniforms, and sets are inaccurate and "made for TV quality" at best. The acting is wooden and hallow.

This film is a waste of time and is scornfully referred to as "the Johnboy version" by WWI buffs. It is universally reviled.

4 out of 5 stars All Quiet on the Western Front.......2007-01-18

Great war documentary of WWI, there is very little available that shows this period in history on the front, but this one is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars ALL QUIT ON THE WESTERN FRONT.......2007-01-17

I really enjoyed this movie. Not the typical "John Boy" movie. I have not seen the original, although I have recently purchased it. I will be able to make a better comparison once I have seen it. By itself, however, it holds it's own.

4 out of 5 stars All Quiet on the Western Front DVD.......2007-01-10

The DVD followed the novel fairly well, however, I did prefer the book over the movie.

    5 out of 5 stars A FITTING TRIBUTE.......2007-06-20

This film is a fitting tribute to the "Talvisota." I have a personal connection - my father was among those on the front lines, those that the movie depicts. He was one of TWO men to survive from his unit, and while he didn't like to speak of the war, the movie was extremely accurate from the accounts my father did share. As for the ending, I noted one of the reviewers didn't "get it." My dad said that one day they were shooting at each other, and the next they were fishing together. So, yes, the brutal combat ended in the blink of an eye, as soon as word came. Neither the young Finns nor the young Russians wanted to be there, they were just serving their respective countries.

As for the subtitles, I speak fluent Finnish, so I enjoyed the movie immensely. My husband, who is not fluent, wasn't particularly taken with the translation, so I translated for him and he enjoyed it more. All in all, though, I thought this was a fitting tribute to the young Finns who sacrificied their lives, and their youth - as my father did - to serve in the front lines and defend their country. Most importantly: KNOW YOUR HISTORY - FINLAND IS THE ONLY COUNTRY TO EVER REPAY ITS WAR DEBT TO THE UNITED STATES.

5 out of 5 stars US DVD version cut by 70 minutes.......2007-04-13

Be forwarned! The US version of this film is 70 minutes shorter than the original version of 195 minutes. You are missing a lot! The PAL version, as far as I know, is only available in the EU.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb! .......2007-02-06

This is how war movies are supposed to be made. You feel tired by the end of this one because you almost feel like you were in those trenches with them. Outstanding movie making about a conflict which is often overlooked. Hollywood should take a lot of notes from this movie. Definitely belongs in the collection of any military history enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars SISU examined and explained.......2006-12-31

Any work of art must address the three aspects of our psyche: Intellect, Appetites, Spirit. This movie, unlike many others, addresses the entire psyche, and does so by weaving these three aspects through the soundtrack, the dialogue and of course the visual representation. After the first viewing, the actual historical account is told and the psyche is no longer overburdened with the obvious. Later viewings allow for a much more meaningful experience. In this, I believe that the production staff have succeeded in their task.

Finland being the underdog, does successfully thwart the massive Russian attack. Not being the aggressor and losing the advantage of first attack, Finland must respond to this attack of its country. But it is not a superior technology, nor numbers that is responsible for this victory of sorts. It is the spirit of man that allows for this page of World War II history to come alive, and if there is anything good from war, it is the ability for men and women to show the eternal and noble virtues within in each of us.

I was not born in Finland, but my parents were, and did raise me with more of a European background than Canadian. With some grade school level Finnish fluency, I found the subtitles to be mildly off target, but then again, there might be some disagreement in my interpretation too. While I would agree with other reviewers that sometimes it is difficult to read all of the subtitles, I am reminded by the fact that this movie was produced a number of years ago. I think that the movie can hardly be held to critical review for technical issues that were resolved after its production.

There is a word in Finnish, SISU, which has no English counterpart or translation. This movie while a wonderful rendering of this historic event, does in passing allow the non-Finnish speaking person a chance to understand what Finns mean by it.

I would heartily suggest this movie for its edu-tainment purposes, but if a History teacher were looking for something to engage children, this movie could very well do so. Being off the beaten path, the teacher would not find students who have already seen the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Finns on the frontlines!.......2006-12-02

One of the greatest, and most accurate war films made, yet little known by most English-speaking viewers. An army reserve unit is mobilized to man the fortified Mannerhiem Line, in the early days of World War II. The characters express all the usual concerns about the coming ordeal...and then it happens. The Soviet Union launches a massive armored onslaught against Finland. Despite Finland's lack of manpower, equipment, and supplies, they devasted wave after wave of Russian assaults. Finland had better-trained soldiers, repelling hundreds of thousands of expendable communist conscripts. In the years before, wisely foreseeing the inevitable conflict with the communist power to the east, Finland had a series of fortifications built in advance, and the Finns utilized these to maximum effect! This film portrays the frontline combat very well, but the entire war had various fascinating perspectives that should also be portrayed on film some day. To get a greater idea of the conflict, read the book, "A Frozen Hell" (which I have also reviewed).

This has to be one of my favorite movies, not only at Christmas time, but I can watch it year round. The acting is absolutely great, the story line is wonderful, the Americans and Germans put their differences aside on Christmas Eve for the sake of this brave mother and her son. THE BEST !!!

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Holiday "Must See"........2006-12-17

I first learned of this true story over 25 years ago when seeing a brief low-budget 35mm version produced by a religious organization. Though the quality of the movie was very poor, the inspiration of the true event was wonderful!

In this more current remake, Linda Hamilton portrays Elizabeth Venkin who host an unlikely household of Christmas Eve guest at the end of war-torn World War II Germany. Every person who I have shared this movie with have the same feeling of warmth and encouragement as they view this movie for the first time.

This is a must-see Christmas Season movie! One that if I don't have the opportunity to see it every coming year, my Christmas season will not be complete. The world would be in a different position today if it were filled with morally courageous individuals like Elizabeth Venkin!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Christmas Story During WWII.......2006-02-01

"Silent Night" is a wonderful story of how people of vastly different backgrounds and beliefs came together on one Christmas night during WWII.

Anyone can enjoy this movie. However, if one is a history or military buff who could really appreciate the different backgrounds of the characters, he/she would probably enjoy "Silent Night" even more.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Night is the Best Christmas movie ever........2005-12-23

I am really a collector of Christmas movies, & this is the best I have ever seen. I cannot beleive that it was not promoted more. It really touched my heart. It was heart warming & truly a wonderful amazing movie. I pray this could happen in on time of war ,at present.
Actually this movie could be viewed at anytime of the year.

While in Berlin in 1938, Varian Fry (William Hurt) witnesses firsthand the brutality of the Nazis as they assault Jews in the streets. Upon returning to America, he launches an effort to save artists and intellectuals whom the Nazis have designated as "degenerate." Varian's War follows Fry as he learns to navigate his way through the bureaucracies of France--which, even in its unoccupied half, was still under the watchful eye of the Gestapo. In his role as a highbrow Oskar Schindler, Fry rescued such artists and writers as Marc Chagall and Franz Werfel. Hurt, as always, gives an intelligent and subtle performance, ably assisted by Julia Ormond as an American expatriate who helps Fry set up his underground railroad. Also featuring Alan Arkin, Maury Chaykin, and Lynn Redgrave. --Bret Fetzer

      Description

This is the untold story of Varian Fry (William Hurt), a forgotten hero of World War II. He built an elaborate underground rescue network that managed to save some of the most influential cultural figures of our age. He saved artists (such as Marc Chagall), writers, and scientists. The safe arrival of these treasured individuals in the United States permanently changed the face of American culture and enriched all of our lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars An American hero of the Holocaust.......2007-05-08

This little known gem of a Holocaust movie by Showtime is worth watching for its portrayal of an American intellectual, Varian Fry's efforts in rescuing Jewish artists & intellectuals trapped in Vichy France during World War Two. Although Varian's efforts were not publicly recognised until after his death in 1967, this movie showcases his heroism in a time when the US maintained a policy of neutrality in the war. Varian is played brilliantly by William Hurt and Julia Ormond shines in her role as the female assistant. The story moves along at a thrilling pace with Varian having to fend off the Nazis and the French securitate whilst undertaking efforts to transport Jewish refugees to Spain. Thanks to Varian Fry's little known heroism, the human race has been enriched by the works of such Jewish luminaries [amongst those he rescued] such as the artist Marc Chagall, and the author Hannah Arendt. A compelling film!

5 out of 5 stars An unheralded hero of Holocaust events.......2007-02-14

Isn't it amazing how many unlikely people can end up the biggest and bravest of heroes? THAT is precisely the story of Varian Fry, an almost "Mr.Peepers"-kind-of-guy who risked life and limb to get safe passage for countless artists, composers, writers, scientists and "subversive" free-thinkers trapped in German-occupied Vichy France. With the express backing of then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt,Varian Fry operates under guise in order to provide "legitimate" papers for peoples set for arrest, deportation and extermination by the Nazis.SEE THE DOCUMENTARY ENTITLED VARIAN FRY as an excellent companion piece to this wonderful homage to an unheralded hero.

5 out of 5 stars Vitally Important & well done.......2006-08-24

This work is significant not only for understanding the way that the Allies let down the Jews during WWII, but for understanding that this is happening again - particularly in Europe, but also in the U.S.A.

3 out of 5 stars Simplifies the Complexities of History.......2004-02-16

This movie is loosely based on the life and work of Varian Fry, an American intellectual who went to Vichy France to save European cultural luminaries from fascist persecution and death. The movie simplifies a complex person and situation, and, as such, falls short of the true history. I do think William Hurt does a good job portraying Fry. I have shown this movie to history classes, but found the pacing is a little slow for most high school students (although a minority appreciated the fact that an American also played a role in saving Jews). To people interested in learning more about Varian Fry, I highly recommend Andy Marino's fascinating character study, A QUIET AMERICAN: THE SECRET WAR OF VARIAN FRY. To history teachers looking for good (and appropriate) films to show students on rescuers during the Holocaust, you might consider the RESCUERS: STORIES OF COURAGE series.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Thus it should come as little surprise that while the events described in Winter Soldier took place during the Vietnam conflict, the 2006 home video release of this 1972 documentary more or less coincides with recent, eerily similar revelations regarding the activities of U.S. military personnel stationed in Iraq, including the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the alleged slaughter of civilians in the town of Haditha. The film centers on a day in January, 1971, when more than 100 former soldiers turned up at a motel in Detroit to give testimony as part of an investigation sponsored by a group calling itself Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Their stories are genuinely chilling, as they matter-of-factly describe civilians being thrown from helicopters, villages burned, children shot, women raped, and innocent people tortured, maimed (cutting off their ears was popular), or even skinned; the notorious My Lai massacre of 1968 was apparently more the rule than the exception. Some eighteen documentary filmmakers took part in the making of this production, including Barbara Kopple (Harlan County, U.S.A.) and Robert Fiore (Pumping Iron). But there is no great artistry on display here--the film is mostly a succession of talking heads, appearing in grainy black & white (there are also a few photographs and occasional color film footage shot in Vietnam) and recounting how they were brainwashed into believing that the atrocities in which they participated were "in the best interests of our nation," as one puts it, especially since "it wasn't like (the Vietnamese) were human." Unlike Emile de Antonio's In the Year of the Pig, Winter Soldier gives us nothing from the other side--the opposition to the opposition, if you will. All we have are the vets' terrible (and highly credible) tales of how officers who witnessed or took part in these horrors wrote them off as Standard Operating Procedure. Strong stuff, but the film starts to become repetitive and ultimately tedious after it passes the one hour mark. The abundance of bonus features, including a current interview with the filmmakers and three shorter films addressing the same theme as the main feature, will be of interest mainly to gluttons for punishment. --Sam Graham

      5 out of 5 stars Overwhelming .......2006-12-06

I saw this movie on TV the day before Thanksgiving and just couldn't beleive it, it may be the most important documentary ever made. The very first veteran interviewed talks about how it was fairly common practice for vietnamese POWs to be thrown from airborne aircraft and everything just spirals downward from there. The movie shows normal everyday americans talking about some of the most horrible things imaginable. Veterans often laugh and chuckle while recounting these things and then you see their faces going from amusement to guilt and shame in the blink of an eye. This literally shows how war is hell and I think should be required viewing in all high schools.

1 out of 5 stars Not exactly as described.......2006-07-03

A detailed examination of the full transcript of the presentations made in Detroit in '71 shows they are a mix of reasonable, questionable, and really off-the-wall statements. One of the stars, Scott Camil, has made a lifelong career of outlandish claims, most recently that an entire village was massacred by Marines who wanted the US combat boots the natives had all somehow acquired. Since the average VN foot size is several sizes smaller than US and villagers didn't like American boots anyhow, this is patently absurd. (He had also proposed assassinating US Senators.) None of the claims of atrocities could be confirmed by the military investigators who later contacted those testifying, all of whom refused to cooperate. (Since they were already out of the military, they could not have been prosecuted for any such incidents, so they had no reason to stay silent.) Accepting the film at its face value, no matter how dramatic and real its contents seem, is well beyond risky. There were undoubtedly individual atrocities committed by US soldiers in Viet Nam, as there have been in every war by every side. But there was never a policy of inciting or encouraging such, and in fact there were courts-martial of soldiers for such occurrences. Where do we hear of the trials of VC/NVA for the 4000-odd citizens of Hue very deliberately rounded up and murdered during Tet '68? If you want to believe the USA is the source of all evil in the world, buy this DVD and you'll get years of enjoyment from it. Otherwise, buy books by Gunter Lewy or Harry Summers or Lewis Sorley.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Underside of War.......2006-06-23

Being a retired Air Force Officer and in the military when this film was made, it brought back many sad and disturbing memories. I know the truth of this as although not on the ground in Viet Nam I listened to enough first-hand accounts. This is what happens in every war. It is especially common in wars such as Viet Nam and Iraq where the "enemy" does not wear uniforms and blends into the population. Put 18, 19 and 20 year old soldiers in the mix of terror and chaos and even some of the best breakdown. Where leadership is absent disaster happens. Bush and his staff who never came close to this scene should watch this film. War should always be the very last resort. So very unfortunate that this film has been seen by so few.

5 out of 5 stars Testimonials such as Winter Soldier Deserve the Light of Day.......2006-06-08

We watched a double feature of Winter Soldier and Sir, No Sir (the recent documentary about the protest movement within the Vietnam War troops) a few weeks ago. The telling of stories that are true and heart-breaking is still with me. I know we will be hearing similar stories from the Iraq War, and we will be devastated because we KNEW. We KNEW from experience what war brings to young men and women, and we went ahead anyway.

At the Vietnam Wall memorial in Washington one can talk with the veterans of that war. Whether or not they were a part of the protest movement, or were supporters of that war, the effects of the rape of a country are with them still.

We will have many more ravaged souls after the current conflict ends.

5 out of 5 stars Great late Godard film.......2006-10-02

I wasn't so impressed with "In Praise of Love", but "Forever Mozart" is incredible. Godard certainly is still relevent today, even if filmgoers increasingly turn away from him for not making a-b-c easy Hollywood films. Check this out and keep and open mind and you should enjoy this thoughtful film.

2 out of 5 stars Mozart has very little to do with it........2006-01-30

While this film may have been a fun exercise for the director in constructing several narrative lines and some beautiful images, it is a muddled and disjointed film.

Luckily I have some knowledge of French or I would have been even more at a loss than I was to understand what message,if any, this film wished to convey. The subtitles were few and far between and they were sorely needed in a movie with many story lines and so much dialogue dealing with philosophical matters.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece. One of the best films of 1997.......2004-02-12

Godard's career is a difficult one to summarize or even to get a grasp on. After creating the seminal New Wave films of the Sixties we all know and love him for, Godard took a drastic turn in the late Sixties-early Seventies when he began making film within his "Dziga-Vertov" group, which were a group of didactic films that marked Godard's complete break from narrative film. After that dead-end, Godard made many beautiful and interesting documentary-theoretical films throughout the Seventies (the best being Numero Deux, Ici Et Ailleurs & Tout Va Bien). He returned to more narrative cinema in the 80's beginning with the little-seen "SAUVE QUI PEUT (LA VIE)". I find most of his 80's films to be pretty weak, besides some good ones up until 1985 or so. My whole point with this rant is that Godard seems to have had an artistic re-awakening in the 90's. Starting with "Nouvelle Vague" in 1990, Godard's Nineties films rank up with some of his best work in the early days. Although I prefer his more recent "In Praise of Love" to this, but I love them both and say that they should be essential viewing for any world cinema buffs. GODARD=CINEMA!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, difficult, exciting film........1999-03-23

In the theater, it was such a fascinating thing to watch. Particular images and sounds still stick with me three years later! Godard enthusiasts will love it, those who like to think on their own (or so they think) will love it. And I love it, too.
