4 out of 5 stars Krav Maga.........A fighting style that is practical.......2007-04-02

As a person who provides personal protection and armed event security at large, high profie events where the potential for physical altercation has been high, I looked for a style that would both meet my needs and give me the skills that I need to defend myself and others. However being large in stature and not extremely limber, I found it difficult to master the techniques taught in traditional Martial Arts. Then through a friend I came to discover Krav Maga. As a mix of boxing, Juijutsu, and wrestling, about every attack you can imagine is all taught in Krav Maga.

Devoloped by Hungarian born Imi Lichtenfeld, a Police Officer, with a strong self defense background, Mr. Lichtenfeld started teaching boxing and wrestling to his fellow officers. However due to Adolph Hitler's occupation of Europe, he was forced to leave his homeland in the early 1940s. Years later, landing in Palestine (what is now known as Isreal,) he again started teaching Krav Maga to what was known as Haganah (a paramilitary organization of the Jewish community,) and as well as to the Isreali Army. In the mid 1940s Haganah was incorporated as part of the Isreali Army, and thus the Israeli Special Forces was formed and Mr. Lichtenfeld was chosen as Chief Krav Maga Instructor. For the next 20 years, he taught Krav Maga and it was proven to be extremely effective in actual battle. Following his retirement, in 1978 the first Krav Maga Association was created and instructors were selected from around the world. Being a student of Krav Maga myself, I can tell you after an hour and a half or so of non-stop cardio, boxing, sparring, wrestling, kicking, perfecting disarming techniques, getting out of chokes, holds, wrist locks from both on the ground and standing you are drenched in sweat. Nothing else on earth is quite like it. You will lose weight, tone muscle, and learn some practical proven fighting theories that will make you stronger, more agile, and should the situation arise, you will know what to do.

What is so great about Krav Maga, that you will see on this 5 CD set, is that Krav is all about using the body's natural instincts. For example, when being choked by an attacker facing us, it is the body's natural desire to want to bring our own hands to our throat to pull the attacker's hands away. So, we take that instinct a step farther. We pluck the attacker's hands from our own throat, (since naturally we take our own hands there,) bring the attacker's hands down to a safe place, down to our chest, and then follow up with a kick to the attacker's groin then punches to the face. Should the attacker be behind us, it is the same. Naturally we bring our hands to our own throat, so we pluck the attacker's hands from our own throat, then taking a step to the side, we let loose with hammerfist to the groin, then bring our elbow up hard and fast to the chin, we finish with several punches, more hammer fists as wells as elbows and kicks.

CD 1 is a background of Krav Maga. More of a commerical than anything and while it does show some attacks it doesn't break down the self defense. Disk 2, shows basic techniques. Strikes and kicks. My only complaint is that they talk about kicking to the head. In the instances where I have been involved in hand to hand fighting a kick to my opponent's head would not have worked, as usually fights are from 3 feet away. And am usually surrounded by people and innocent bystanders. While kicks to the head are used frequently and quite effectively by UFC and MMA fighters, it is my opinion that only in dire circumstances should one of your kicks go any higher than your own waist. I can cause massive damage by a well placed kick to an attacker's thigh, chest or lowest ribs. Disk 3 is where you get into getting out of unarmed attacks. Such as headlocks or hugs. They do a good job in slowing down the escapes, and break it down well. Disks 4 and 5 are how to deal with armed attacks. I do disagree with the CDs telling you during a knife attack to kick first, rather than trying to block the attack. If your kick fails, or lands improperly, you are leaving yourself wide open especially if you are facing someone who is adept with knife fighting. Also on disk 4 (attacks against guns) you are told to punch to the head. A punch to the head, while effective, is hard on your own hand. A strike to the throat, face or chest is easier on your own hand. And can cause a lot of pain to the attacker. Each CD is about an hour and a half long, except for the first which is barely 30 minutes.

Compared with Bas Rutten's (who is an incredible Krav Maga enthusiast) or with UFC Champion Tito Ortiz's training videos (which is highly recommended as well) or the excellent Mike Karanek Fight To Survival series, (which also teaches a form of Krav Maga,) I feel this CD set does a much better job a giving a background of Krav, and breaks down moves to its basic levels. Pick this up, and learn a great background in Krav Maga. From there, find a local class to perfect these skills, and you will become an enthusiast of this great fighting style.

3 out of 5 stars Very Basics.......2007-06-15

This dvd has good production, great menu options. This teaches basic punches, kicks. The dramatic/acting scenes are good to show you how to use them. But putting them together is where I was disappointed.
This is not a workout or even a practice with type of dvd. They just show you them well... normal speed, slow motion, different camera angles, etc. But there's no integration to bring in the dvd audience. The narration over the video was a bit boring to me as well.
I watched this with a friend that has taken many years of martial arts & also teaches & he was falling asleep as well. He agreed overall it was good, but the presentation was too dumbed down. For example, in teaching elbow strikes, the show you can swing upward to your head, swing downward, swing outward, etc. They show all this well, which is great, only 1x for each movement then diff angles. But then they showed the same say outward strike in for several minutes at almost any degree possible. Such as you can stroke 90º, 95º 100º 110º or OOHHHH think this... 115º THAT'S a whole new elbow strike IDEA!
My friend also cringed at watching the dramatized scene where a bartender grabs a gun from a customer pulling it towards him before outwards. "That's bad, the gun is still in the assailant's hand on the trigger, pointed at his body while he's pulling the gun away." my friend announced.
There was some great punching & kicking demonstrations with one guy holding up padded hand targets, but only something you can watch & admire the form & power or in my opinion, "watch them show off."
I've seen a lot of other self-defense or martial art teaching dvds & the best is when the teacher is speaking (they are more passionate/in the moment then narration) as they are demonstrating & repeating the moves & encouraging the audience to practice even if only 5-10x.

chances of being a victim,it's easy to follow and learn!

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to krav Maga.......2006-08-08

This is an into to the basic combatives of KM. It shows all the basic strikes (punches, elbows, knees, kicks), and the basic blocks.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow. If you cannot get to any KM classes this is a very good way to start. You will need a partner to practice with. Nice bonus on the DVD is a few examples of focus mitt drills to get you going. Good product, I give it 4 stars becuase I think they could have thrown in a few reality based drills.

4 out of 5 stars The basic techniques.......2004-09-24

This DVD contains the basic techniques of Krav maga system. The techniques include attacks with hands (mostly punches with closed fist, but also hammer punches), elbows, knees and feet. There are some counterattacks and defences also included. At the beginning of the film they talk about angles of attack, target areas and stance & movement. As a DVD extra, they present focus mitt combinations to utilize in your training (they mention that they will produce an entire film on the subject in the future).

It is worth mentioning that they don't teach, or even mention the correct falling technique at all. Also, I think they should have taught also palm strikes, but for some reason they were left out. As palm strike is almost as effective as punch with a closed fist, but much more safe for your own hand, it should be included in everyones' arsenal. When instructing kicking techniques, they mention casually that you can kick also to the head. I think that they should have warned against that, because in real life, kicking above your own waist is considered risky, and generally not advisable.

The presentation of techniques varies from fair to excellent, the average being of good quality. In some techniques I learned some nuances I had not grasped in my Krav maga classes. Each technique opens up with a dramatized scene in which the technique is used. After that they present the technique at full speed, and after that in slow motion, and finally in learning stages. For some reason, they have chosen not to use slow motion of a full speed presentation of technique. Rather, the person presenting the technique is moving in slow motion, according to the instructions of off-screen narrator. This makes somewhat amateurish impression of the production.

Speaking of production, it is fairly OK. The film is shot with only one camera, but for the most part, it is shooting at the right spot. The techniques are presented in a studio against a black screen, but the dramatized scenes are shot in loading docks, restaurants, parking lots and so on. They use two narrators who take turns with narrating the techniques. The other narrator is International Krav maga federation head instructor Eyal Yanilov, and the other is U.S. chief instructor Darren Levine. Yanilov does not speak very good English, so from time to time it is hard to grasp what he is saying. Otherwise the production is good, and it's easy to understand the techniques.

As a Krav maga practitioner myself, I like the system. In this film, they have succeeded in presenting the basic techniques very well. There are some shortcomings, though, that reduce one star from the rating of this film.

3 out of 5 stars Defense against unarmed attack .......2004-09-24

This DVD presents several techniques for defending agains unarmed attack. The punch defences are covered in Basic combatives film, and in this film they present defences against several different chokes, headlocks and bearhugs. The DVD includes two bonus techniques that are not presented in the VHS version. The film opens with almost 15 minute long discussion about the basic principles of Krav maga system (system that relies on instinctive responses to an attack, the demand for realistic training and so on).

As with the previous film (basic combatives), the instruction is generally good. Each technique starts with a dramatized scene, then they show the technique at full speed, then at slow motion (again, they have not slowed the film down, rather the people instructing the techniques are moving slowly). After that, they break the technique down to learning stages to make it easier to learn the technique. When needed, the defender performs the technique as "shadow boxing", without the attacker (so that the attacker's body would not block the view).

In some of the techniques, they use counterattacks that were not instructed in the basic combatives tape (like palm strike). They don't discuss breaking the tunnel vision while using the techniques, and they don't mention other physical effects stress will have on a person while engaged in fight. I found that somewhat odd, as in my Krav maga school, they emphasize these aspects of real-life combat in training.

The production of the film is of the same standard as in the basic combatives film. Everything works quite nicely, but there is slight amateurish feel to the production.

There were some basic techniques I was missing. Naturally, they can't fit everything into one DVD, but if they had moved the basic principles to the introduction film, they could have fitted one or two more techniques to this film.

4 out of 5 stars Defense against a handgun .......2004-09-24

This DVD concentrates defending against handgun threats. There is one technique for defending against a long gun as an DVD extra, but otherwise all the techniques concentrate on handguns. At the film they mention that they are producing more films in the future that include also defences against long gun threats. As in the previous films, this film starts with 15 minute long introduction, in which they tell principles of gun disarming techniques, give very brief instruction on differences between pistol and revolver, and give some advise on safe practise with firearms.

With some techniques, there is a chapter titled "tactical considerations", in which they discuss tactics associated with given technique. In these chapters they tell some basic principles of combat, but I feel these principles would have been better included into the first (introduction) tape. That way, the intro tape would have included some worthwhile information, and the information would have been presented before any of the techniques.

This film includes fewer techniques than other films. But in the other hand, the instruction in more detailed than in other films. On the downside, they instruct hitting to the head with a closed fist in just about every technique. This is not very good thing, especially if you are a police officer or armed citizen. If you first hit your adversary with a fist, breaking your trigger finger, then you cannot use your own firearm to protect you, even if the situation warranted it.

4 out of 5 stars Defending against a knife.......2004-09-24

This film concentrates on defending against knife attacks. They mention that in the future they will produce more tapes on the subject, so this is only a beginning. The film starts with 9 minutes long introduction to knife attacks, that includes the most common ways your attacker will use the knife, several different ways to hold a knife, and so on. The DVD includes over a dozen techniques on defending against different knife attacks. There are two extra techniques on the DVD that are not found on VHS version of the film.

As in other films, the instruction is generally good, and it is easy to understand the techniques. To illustrate the effectiveness of the instruction, I was viewing the film for the first time, and there were several techniques that were totally new to me. The next day, I was practicing techniques in my Krav maga class, and they presented a new knife defense technique. It was one of the techniques I had seen in the film the previous night. As I was practicing the technique for the first time, it was apparent that I performed better than usual when trying a new technique for the first time. Although I had not practiced the technique while watching the film, it still improved my technique.

As of the techniques on the film: For the most part, they were OK, as is usually the case with Krav maga techniques. But this time, there were four techniques I did not like at all. All of them were kick defences against a knife attack. The main problem with these techniques is that there is no blocking of the knife attack, rather the technique is based on pre-emptive kick that is supposed to stop the attack. But if that kick fails, of the attacker tries to block your kick with his knife hand, you are in trouble.

The production of the film is at the same level as in the previous films. Everything works fine, but there is nothing fancy. This time, however, in some places they have used real slow motion (slowing down the film, as opposed to performing in slow pace that is used in other films).

5 out of 5 stars Military Police Combatives DVD.......2007-06-17

I was skeptical when I purchased this DVD but was not disappointed once it arrived. There are no "bells and whistles" on this hour plus DVD and sometimes I had to rewind and pause the DVD itself to understand the techniques, but this DVD is PACKED with great hand to hand combat stuff! It is worth the $25. I really learned a lot from it and the techniques are simple to learn but realistic at the same time. It is geared for the military but I recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to learn some good self defense moves!

2 out of 5 stars A commercial for the system.......2004-09-24

This film reminds me of TV infomercials. There is very little actual content in the film, instead they try to convince the viewer of the superiority of their system (as a practitioner of Krav maga myself, I too like the system - although I don't think it's the ultimate self defence system. But I just dislike this kind of advertising where you have to pay to see commercials). At the beginning, there is a short history lesson, and the main principles of the system are also presented. After that, there are some testimonials on the effectiveness of the system. There are also some dramatized scenes used throughout the film (the same scenes are used in the other films, as well).

The film is narrated by Darren Levine (U.S. chief instructor of International Krav Maga Federation). Except for the dramatizations, there is very little visual content in the film, therefore you could get this information from the Internet, and get it for free. Besides, that way you would get both sides of the story: There are (at least) two international Krav maga federations in the world, and the history presented in the film represents only one side of the story. On top of that, they try to give the impression that Krav maga is an original form of self defence, that Imi Lichtenfeld developed it from scratch. In reality, Krav maga is based on ju-jitsu, judo and an older Israeli system of hand to hand combat called KAPAP (Krav Panim l'Panim - face to face combat), and it was developed by Moni Isaac along with Lichtenfeld. There are also other Israeli systems they don't mention at all. But then, this is a commercial, therefore they don't advertise the competition...

The reason I gave this film two stars (instead of only one) was that if you buy the whole 5 DVD set, you get this film essentially free. It is not worth the money if bought separately, however.

    Product Description

This is the program you saw advertised in Black Belt and other magazines. Unlike the complete F.I.G.H.T. series that includes a t-shirt and manual, this only includes the 3 DVDs. It doesn't matter if they are armed, bigger than you, or more skilled. This is what the Israeli military teaches its Special Ops teams, turning ordinary civilians into devastating hand-to-hand combat fighters. It is all you need to survive just about anything the world can throw at you. Best of all, you don't need tremendous strength or ability to get capable. They will show you how to deal with attackers with guns and knives. They will show you how to get to a point of reference- that is a position you feel 100% comfortable with- in just 2 or 3 steps, regardless of how the attack started. And, once you get there, you will do the same things every time. Things you will become proficient at. The series is designed in a teaching format and is of excellent quality. No matter what your background, you will learn valuable new techniques of self-defense designed to work even in the most extreme circumstances. Don't wait another day to get this important information.

4 out of 5 stars Haganah system in DVD.......2005-01-27

This set of 3 DVD's includes the complete haganah self defence system. You can use the films by itself, but the set is best when used with the haganah textbook.

Haganah is self defence system that has been largely influenced by krav maga. All of the techniques are combat proven, and the system is being constantly evaluated and updated. What makes haganah different from other martial arts is that you don't have to study several years until you can reach the more advanced techniques. Haganah training is based on military training principles, where you train all of the techniques in rotations, each of the rotations taking few months to run through. After you have gone through one rotation, you have been introduced to all of the techniques, and after few rotations, you begin to master them.

Another aspect unique to haganah is thing called point of reference (POR). This means that no matter how your opponents attacks, your aim is to end up in one of three positions relative to your attacker, and after that you have three options (incapacitating, killing or taking into custody), depending what you want to accomplish.

The haganah system is designed so that you can learn all the moves and techniques from the book and film, therefore you don't necessarily need a teacher (although having one wouldn't hurt). The techniques are simple, and because the POR concept, almost all of the techniques end in the same way, so that it's even more easy to learn.

The first DVD includes the basic principles of the haganah system. The second DVD has the unarmed combat techniques, and the third DVD includes defences against knife and gun attacks. The same information is included in the textbook, but the techniques are far easier to learn by watching the film. There are some minor differences (mainly in details) with DVD's and the book. In these situations I have follower the information given in the films. The major downside of the DVD set is that the instructor is a big man, and he does not have a training partner who is considerably bigger than him. Therefore he cannot show how the system works against a bigger opponent (it will work, but you have to make some slight modifications). Otherwise, the instructing is very good and detailed.

The haganah system is very good and simple to learn. You don't necessarily need the textbook, but still I would recommend buying it. If not anything else, you can use it as an easy reference when you are practicing the techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic Self Defense........2006-07-07

While I love various forms of martial arts, I've found that they mostly need to be modified in order to be effective in a real situation. Although those limitations are often needed to isolate certain training methods, most teachers seem afraid to instruct their students on how to REALLY apply what they are learning.
This system is itself a modification. And a very good one at that. I will say that if you are not already a well rounded martial artist then this entire set will be useless to you. However, if you are already grounded in the fundamentals of MMA, have police experience or military hand to hand combat training then this DVD will help you understand how those rules will apply in real situations and make you consider things you would never have had to consider when simply training or competing in a controlled situation.

Weapons are dealt with at great lengths and in great detail. Ground-fighting is also covered but light is also brought to the fact that in a real fight tactics are mixed with someone biting your thigh and ears can be pulled. Mike Lee also points out that going to the ground in a street fight isn't always the smartest thing to do since you never know who's going to be coming along, but one should know how to handle the situation should they find themselves there. AND GET UP. Good advice.

I disagree with the instructor that we need to learn how to fight here in the US because of terrorist threats. Having grown up here I would say the terrorist problem is nothing compared to dealing with the "urban" attacks that happen every day against whites and asians. Even in my own city we hear and see almost daily someone getting randomly attacked, often fatally by a black person on the subway. And considering how the liberal media usually plays down or outright ignores such things one wonders how often these things actually occur. So I think self defense is necessary but for a very different reason than Mike Lee thinks it is necessary. (Even today as I write this two such attacks have taken place).
But as a trainer Mike Lee's instruction is the most realistic, hardcore training I've ever come across. This isn't about being fancy but about what works. Mike Lee should be called the new Bruce Lee of Self Defense because if enough people learn from him he will change the way the men of the world look at combat.

From my entire collection of Self Defense DVDs this is the one I watch the most often.
