close to home cooking!.......2007-04-15
This is an awesome cookbook. I love the enticing pictures that accompany the recipes. I'm no chef but I've had a lot of success in many of the recipes in this book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning to cook thai food.
THE BEST THAI COOKBOOK!!!.......2006-09-15
I just bought this cookbook and I must say I am extremely pleased. I bought my copy at Barnes and Nobels which was more expensive than the price at Amazon but I would still say that it was worth the few extra dollars. There are close to 300 pages of delicions, exquisite, authentic thai cuisine and food culture. Each dish has a beautifully photgraphed presentation of the dish so you can make dishes that are not only delicious but that can keep up with some of the best Thai restaurants out there. The first few pages also give you a breakdown of the different regions of Thailand and the foods that they eat, which differ sometimes based on economic status and other cultural influences. The best part I must say are they beautiful, eyecatching pictures that capture all aspects of Thai cuisine and food culture. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to cook delicious, well presented Thai food. It could also be given as a gift to someone who you know that likes Thai food. It's just great and I cant wait till the next time that I get to cook with it!!!!
An excellent book for new and intermediate Thai Cooks.......2005-12-24
This is a great book for new or intermediate thai cooks. We bought the book because we wanted to try to make some of our favorite take out dishes in our own kitchen. We did have to find a asian food store that sold the curry paste and fish sause... (much cheaper than the Mega Market), which was part of the fun. About 80% of the recipes are things you can actually make yourself... Also there are descriptive pages about the types of foods, ingrediants, spices, and lots of colorful fantastic pictures. My wife now thinks I cook better than the take out joint... !!

I Love Charles Alan Wright.......2005-01-30
Wright's work is more technical than Glannons, but I used it for my civil procedure class, and I did extremely well in that class. I would buy both.
Quick summaries to get you through class and 1st year exams.......1999-10-09
If you are not understanding civil procedure and want something to clarify the rules or subject matter/personal jurisdiction, this is a good book to start. It provides clear summaries of the rules as well as the policy debates underlying issues raised in procedure. Keep in mind that this is not a law review article, so in essence this book is more aimed at summarizing all the critiques and debates that have gone on before rather than looking at the law from a different angle. But if you want a short read that will get you through the exam, this book is just as about as useful as anything else you might come across. There are professors who base their classes on this book, as well as students who diligently read this book every day to prepare for the socratic questions they can await in class the next day. If you want good grades, though, I think it takes more than reading all these horn books and what not. A lot of it just comes down to the processing and understanding of the material, which can be daunting at times and actually just comes at different times for different people. However much you read these hornbooks, if you don't understand the stuff or can't apply it, it won't actually help you that much.
Succinct summaries of FRCP.......1999-10-09
This book is commonly used by first year students in civil procedure. I have known many students in the past who have found the book helpful in explaining the intricacies of the federal rules. A must read.

Book Description
Send 'Em South is an adventure story that brings the two conflicting worlds of North and South together. In the years just prior to the Civil War, David Adams grows up in the middle of two worlds. His father is an Irish immigrant who is ridiculed and ignored by the people of Boston. His mother is an abolitionist who has dedicated her life to ending slavery. David, as the son of these two, finds himself an outcast amongst his friends and even his family.
Lisa has been a slave all of her life. Her mother was sold when she was 10 years old. Her father appears to have given up all hope of seeing her mother again. When he takes Lisa's hand one day and whisks her off the plantation, no one is more surprised than she. Then, with the help of several white and black abolitionists, the pair head north to the city of Boston where they hope to find Lisa's long lost mother. The only problem is that slave catchers are hot on their trail and are determined to send Lisa and her father back to the plantation. Only a young boy named David Adams stands in their way.
Send 'Em South is a story of love and dedication, hatred, and sacrifice. It is the story of Lisa's love for her father and the sacrifices he makes for her, of David's need to find acceptance in the confusing world he lives in, and of bravery that two children can have when surrounded by hatred, deception, and danger.

Send em South.......2005-10-24
I liked the action in the book. I also liked the actions of the people helping the slaves.
A great read for young people and their parents!.......2001-09-26
This book not only totally involves you with a great story, thoughtful writing, and a surprising amount of suspense, but begs the reader to further discuss and reflect on their own values and view of the impact of slavery on the American experience. I am a mother of grown sons, and wish I had this book to share with them as they were growing up.
The best kind of book........2001-09-21
Many times books meant for young people don't have an interest for older adults - like the parents! This book is different. In fact this book begs to be read simultaneously by parents and kids, or read aloud by parents and their kids together. The wealth of opportunity for meaningful discussion of goals, opinions, values, and yes - history - should not be left unused. Send 'Em South is well written and surprisingly suspenseful and interesting. I am a mother with grown sons, but wish I had had this book to share with them as they were growing up.
excellent book.......2001-08-27
This was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. Its around a middle school reading level, but could easily be enjoyed by older students, or anyone interested in the Pre- Civil War. The book is well written, and keeps you wondering what will happen to Lisa and David, until the very end. This book shows that friendship goes beyond race, and but also shows just how cruel people can be to people of other races and nationalities. Overall, I loved the book. I give it a definite five stars.
Send 'Em South.......2001-08-24
I read the first book in the 'Young Heroes of History' series; 'Send 'Em South.' I LOVED it!!! I couldn't put it down!!
The adventure captivates the reader in a whole new world, time, place, and setting, making you feel like you are in the book, experiencing the thrilling adventure, right along with the characters! Altogether, making this an incredible book, and series. I HIGHLY recommend it. I give it 5 stars! (It's the best!)

Book Description
From a leading medical expert at Johns Hopkins, here is an up-to-the-minute, definitive guide to whats known about depression and how it can be treated.
Around ten percent of North Americans suffer from depression at some point -- and more than half havent even sought help. Now, Dr. Raymond DePaulo, one of the worlds foremost authorities on depression, provides a sensitive, thorough, and reassuring book for sufferers from depression and those who care about them. This practical guide for individuals with depression and their families -- the only totally comprehensive book in the market -- shows readers how to identify the problem, then directs them to the various forms of treatment, including medications, psychotherapy, support groups, and exercise. It is one of the few books to discuss in depth manic depression, the bipolar form of depression. Dr. DePaulo discusses both mainstream (the latest medications and talk therapies) and alternative paths and reveals the truth about the dangerous fallacies that abound about depression. Comprehensive, compassionate, and grounded in the very latest research into brain chemistry, psychology, and medications, this is a definitive, landmark roadmap to one of the most devastating -- and common -- mental illnesses.

Brilliant Man.......2006-11-25
Excellent. This man is brilliant. After 12 years of depression he is the only doctor who correctly treated my daughter.
A stepping off point.......2006-07-17
I have major depressive disorder. This book helped me understand the science of how the brain works with the various chemicals and drugs. As far as the experience or treatment, there wasn't much that I found personally relevant or didn't already know or that went into enough depth for me.
The book is a basic guide to understanding depression and does not offer any sort of cure or ideal treatment plan. That's not the point of it. The information is presented categorically and clearly with the resources cited, should you like to go further. The more common methods of treatment are presented with explanations of how they work and why.
However, this book was an excellent resource for the other people in my life who have been affected by my depression. They don't need or want to know all about the treatment options and experience in great depth. They do need to know some of the why's and how's and that it's not their fault. My parents found it to be quite helpful in understanding what was happening with me.
A+ Book. Now there's a new therapy-Vagus Nerve Stimulation.......2005-03-14
This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend for anyone struggling with the depression. However, since publication of the marvelous book, the FDA has approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. Vagus nerve stimulation is NOW the mainstream treatment for chronic or recurrent depression. Patients and their families should educate themselves about this remarkable treatment-it could change their life. I would recommend the book-"Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's a must read for anyone struggling with the grips of the terrible disease.
A Biased View on Treating Depression.......2005-01-30
"Understanding Depression" is a clear and concise view of the illness through the eyes of "a psychiatrist who has seen in consultation, teaching, research, and treatment settings some 8,000 people with clinical depression and manic-depressive illness."
Dr. J. Raymond DePaulo Jr., M.D. is not only a psychiatrist, but also a psychiatry professor and the director of the Affective Mental Disorder Clinic at John Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. DePaulo has written a cogent book at what it means to suffer from depression and its possible causes. The psychiatrist also covers various aspects of manic-depression, but the lion's share of the book covers the illness of depression. Despite numerous advances in medical science, we are still not clear on what causes depression. Dr. DePaulo states, "No one system, organ, or other factor is responsible for depression - not one steroid, not one gene, not one neurotransmitter, and not a lesion on one side of the brain or the other. What we seem to have is...a stew with lots of different and exotic ingredients."
Where the book becomes shortsighted is within the sections dealing with the treatment of depression. The doctor advocates the use of traditional and cutting-edge medication as the cure for the vast majority of people throughout the book. It is not surprising that a psychiatrist does not go in depth concerning alternatives to drug therapies, but Dr. DePaulo covers only an astonishing 9 pages regarding alternative treatments such as exercise, nutrition, or talk therapy. In fact, large portions of the text read like a long pharmaceutical advertisement.
In the end, "Understanding Depression" is an invaluable guide to just that, understanding depression. However, the latter part of the subtitle, "What You Can Do About It," is a biased view of a psychiatrist whose only remedy are pills despite this "cure" entailing ineffectiveness and serious side-effects for a significant portion of the recipients.
Bohdan Kot
an Excellent Resource.......2004-08-06
If you're looking to learn about depression, this is an EXCELLENT book to begin with. DePaulo does a great job of explaining what depression is (and isn't) and what we do and don't know about it.
He explores the causes of depression and he's not afraid to say when something isn't 100% certain. The truth is, they're still learning so much about the causes of depression that I'm very suspicious of anyone who claims to know exactly what causes it or how best to treat it.
Also, the book reads well.. his writing style is very conversational. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to understand what depression is and the options one has in dealing with it.

A tastefully selected anthology of comfort for mourners .......2004-10-15
This is a tastefully selected anthology for mourners that Alan Kay put together after the passing of his father. It combines traditional Jewish writings with some more contemporary pieces of literature. The Jewish tradition has many great works , Psalms, Lamentations, Job , and many others which express the spirit of mourning in a deep way. This book also includes an account of Kay's own personal process of mourning which is also moving and helpful.
A very good work- the prayer is that none of us should need it.
