5 out of 5 stars Joyce has a big heart and huge sound.......2006-09-15

I've seen 2 master classical pianists, Mitsuko Uchida, and Joyce Yang. I have Mitsuka's 5 CD box set of Mozart on Phillips. I was told it took Spivey Hall, on Clayton College Campus in Atlanta 20 years of consecutive invitations before they could schedule her recital, Halloween, Oct 31st 2002. I was 2nd row, what I call the handkerchief section. Violinist Mark Steinberg accompanied her that memorable evening of Mozart's five violin Sonatas. My favorite performance still, was Joyce's Silver Medal recital inside Harris Concert Hall, in Aspen, July 2nd, 2005, performing Bach, Vine, Scarlatti, Currier, Chopin & Liszt. I sat front row center at Lakewood Cultural Center for Joyce's March 23 2006 recital, and 4th row again in Aspen for her Prokofiev piano concerto with the Aspen Festival Orchestra, July 2nd 2006. All 3 times I was greeted by her with a hug backstage Aspen and in the public lobby at Lakewood. She has a magnetic, sparkling, bubbling, wonderful spirit and personality, is constantly laughing off all the well deserved fans praises, and even introduced me to her Mom. I told her it's becsause of her sophomore yr high school tour to Decatur, Illinios' Millikin University recital, that my Mom attended that I discovered her prior to winning the Van Cliburn silver. Oh, and Alexander Kobrin, did not "blow away the competition", during the 17 day competition in the opinion of some judges and reporters of the Dallas Morning News who proclaimed "Joyce Yang...won the heart right from the start... She's a brilliant pianist and million-volt presence on stage". Whew, I'm going again 4th row to see Joyce with the Colorado Symphony Oct 1st 2006. Also reccommend Jennifer Lim, Canadian pianist, Juillard & Curtis Institute trained, with perhaps the finest Chopin recording on the Green House label.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Horowitz and Rubenstein Sound like novices !.......2006-02-27

Listened to her perform at Barns at WolfTrap much the same works that are on the CD. Yang is an exceptional performer who really does excel in all of her work. She is a rising star and this CD is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Yang, and not Yin: An Inspiring Young Pianist to Watch! .......2005-10-24

Joyce Yang won the silver medal at the recent 12th Van Cliburn Competition. She also received first place for the best performance of a contemporary piece; and first place for the best performance in chamber music (with the Takacs string quartet.) If you have a chance, take a look at the DVD of the competition--where her chamber performance is briefly shown. A testament to the respect and chemistry between her and the Takacs string quartet is that she has been invited to perform with them on one of their next tours.

Joyce Yang is young but she is not a newcomer--she came from Korea to study at Juilliard and won a competition to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of thirteen, playing the same Prokofieff Concerto #2 that she performed in the final concerto round of the Van Cliburn. Her playing is clean and musical. There is a maturity and a grasp of the music that is palpable. Plus, she has a charismatic personality that imparts passion and a plucky sense of humor. What I can't figure out is how someone with such thin arms and fingers can play with such stamina and musicality. She "gets" really complex music, like the Vine sonata...and then rolls right into the Liszt right afterwards.

Joyce Yang has the potential to become a truly great pianist. How she matures as an artist and grows as a person will be watched with great interest. Buy this CD!! I hope she records with the Takacs Quartet--buy that one too if it comes along!

5 out of 5 stars A True Treasure.......2005-10-16

Ms Yang plays with a maturity that far exceeds her age of 19. For those that have had the privalege of viewing her performance at the 12th Van Cliburn Competion know the pure depth of emotion she expresses through her music. Treat yourself to her wonderful performance. Your spirit will soar!

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Isserlis..........2005-07-26

What a mix of pieces of which to compare and contrast. Through it all, Steven Isserlis takes us on a wide and varied journey! He truly is one talented artist. Well worth the money. Get a copy and give thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Universal Music- I had to grab it.......2004-09-06

I was just listening to anything "interesting" in cello music & just took this like any other cd. I was hooked from the onsert. The tone of Isserlis is awesome, Beethoven's "Andante con Variazion" with harpschord accompanyment is just great. I continued to listen and things started hitting up when I heard a sorrowful soprano voice by Felicity Lott in Berlioz's "La Captive" song & the piano, cello move around it Oh! my God then & then I decided to purchase it, actually i had decided to purchase "Folk Cello" by Rautio & Ylonen(not available on Amazon, US)then i ended up using my last penny for Isserlis CD.The soprano returns again on Taverner's "The child Lives" with the same impact Wow !what a voice. This was very good for me because I like opera very much & to find it in this setting with the cello & piano was a bonus.ALL tracks in this cd are the greatest ever with a variety of styles from different composers but one song that really captured my imagination was Leonard's "Donkey & Driver" especially at the end. According to the story (as written by artist):there was this donkey trotting merrily along the road when its driver decides to sing a very beautiful sorrowful song well this is said to be a very busy donkey with people to see & their cultures clash then who wins? well listen to the song especially the last part when the cello mimics the sound of the donkey a rebelious one at that. All songs background are also included, the interpretations of the soprano songs in English are also included. Also check out the last song which was enhanced by isserlis when he says he was "hooked" by Carl vine's "Inner world" as played by David Pereira the dedicatee of the work. This is one of the most trilling cello renditions I like the warmth, the tone that is almost humanically lyrical.Well I guess if u love cello & u dont have this then u are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Other artists take note - THIS is how recitals are done........2001-06-29

'Cello World' is a model recital disc, conceived as a recreation of a typical turn-of-the-20th-century programme of short 'encore pieces'. Naturally, the bulk of the pieces privelege the essence of the cello, its deep, meditative, wistful melancholy - Schumann's sleepy 'Intermezzo', Villa-Lobos' evocative 'Song of the Black swan', Dvorak's romantically sad 'Romantic Piece no. 4', Rachmaninoff's rich 'Lied', Scriabin's atypically accessible 'Romance'.

this low-key mood is interleavened with moments of pure play - Beethoven's mischievous 'andante con Variazioni', a delightful tussle between (transcribed) cello and harpsichord that evokes a blithe aristocratic 18th century world rather than the composer's usual Romantic intensity; Popper's impish 'Dance of the Elves', Seiber's lovely Kreisler pastiche 'Dance Suite'.

There a couple of musical jaw-breakers to 'enlighten' the conservatism of the presumed audience - Tavener's sub-Gorecki 'The Child Lived', and the galloping epic 'Inner World' by Carl Vine, actually played by David Pereira, recorded on amplified CD, full of distorted computer echoes, and a lot more exciting and accessible than it should be.

Most cherishable for me is a little Francophone section near the start - Debussy's unexpectedly sprightly '(Nocturne et) Scherzo'; Berlioz's lyrically lilting 'La Captive', sung by Felicity Lott, for today at least the most beautiful song ever written; Faure's characteristically soulful 'Morceau de concours' (written as a Conservatoire sight test!); Leonard's deliciously funny 'Donkey and Driver', the cello playing the obstinate animal; and Saint-Saens' 'The Swan', a watery dream that defies over-familiarity.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2000-09-10

There cannot be many greater British 'cellists than Steven Isserlis. He commissioned and premiered John Tavener's "The Protecting Veil" in 1989, to huge acclaim, and has championed for many years the 'cello music of Saint-Saens and Schumann. His playing is very energetic and intense (a 'cellist friend of mine noted that you can hear his fingers stopping the strings!) and his musicality shines as brightly as a precious jewel.

It is therefore very good to find this disc. It covers an eclectic range of styles: a set of Beethoven variations (with harpsichord accompaniment) opens the programme, whereas the last track is a strange and colourful work by Carl Vine with electro-acoustic effects produced by an amplified CD; we are also treated to a set of jazzy variations by Matyas Seiber and the wistful "Song of the Black Swan" by Villa-Lobos. Some tracks show the 'cello as a solo instrument, accompanied (these include "Romances" by Scriabin and Rachmaninov, and a "Nocturne" by Debussy) and otherwise (for instance the intriguing "Chonguri" for plucked strings by Sulkhan Tsintsadze). There is a dazzling display in the form of David Popper's "Elfentanz," but there is also a sober and calm use of the instrument in Tavener's "The Child Lived" (which features fine singing from Felicity Lott and shows how far the ''cello soundscape' has affected the composer since he was first approached by Isserlis). There is even a piece by one of Isserlis' relatives, and to hear him perform it is reminiscent of Julian Lloyd-Webber's recordings of music by his father and brother.

Everything about this disc is a joy. The music is good, the performance sparkles, the programme works despite being so varied, and the notes (by Isserlis himself) are witty and delightful to read. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Listening.......2000-02-12

This cd relaxes me when I am working at the computer or driving the car. It covers a wide range of tempos but always pleases. A good cello lover's collection. Some pieces almost make me cry they have so much feeling.

    5 out of 5 stars Unheralded brilliance.......2004-07-08

A couple of friends sent me this CD, justifiably effusive about it, and I must agree with them: this is one hot pianist. The first-prize winner in the 1989 Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition, Sergei Babayan is apparently well known to connoisseurs of fine piano playing, but from the evidence here, deserves the widest possible audience. His amazingly strong technique is well presented by Pro Piano Records' sound here, too, which which puts you right up near the instrument. (The recording itself was made in Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood.)

Babayan's unusual menu begins with three selections from Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus (sections 11, 13, and 15) with the pianist bringing out every piercing emotion in these monumental works. Let's hope that at some point he will record the entire cycle. Perhaps most unusual is Carl Vine's Piano Sonata, written in 1990 for the Sydney Dance Company. (This work must have been a choreographer's dream.) It is a real dazzler, with relentless, darting cross rhythms that tickle the ear, and I don't think it is premature to call it one of the great piano sonatas of the 1990's. The two Respighi pieces are also alluring, with Babayan finding just the right touch to express their delicate, luminous sonorities. They also make a nice break between some of the more intense (and difficult) works before and after them.

Perhaps the best are saved until last: selections 1, 3 and 7 from Ligeti's Musica Ricercata, written in the 1950's. Ligeti posed himself the problem of writing a cycle of short piano works in which No. 1 dwells on a single note (in this case, A), escalating in complexity all the way to the final one, No. 11, which uses all 12 notes in the octave. If you can't imagine how anyone could create music under such restrictions, here is the evidence.

One of my first thoughts after hearing this marvelous project was to muse on how many pianists are out there doing terrific work, virtually out of sight of the general public. Babayan is on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music, and to be heartily commended for his commitment to nurturing young pianists. But I do hope he carves out more time in the recording studio. For most listeners, this little-known, spectacularly talented artist will be a real find.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!.......2001-03-05

Upon my first listening to this CD, I thought it was incredible. The only pieces that I had heard before were the Respighi Notturno, and the Musica Ricercata by Ligeti. I havent spent much time listening to the Messaien, but, what i have heard is extremely good. The Carl Vine Sonata is an AMAZING piece!! I had heard his name before, but not any of his music. Babayan plays it extremely well. His technique is incredible. I would definitely buy this cd if you are interested in good piano music or post-modern style music.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely brilliant soundtrack for a wonderful film........1999-01-11

This soundtrack is mindblowing. Westlake's brilliance in suiting to perfection each and every sound to the images on screen for the large-screen documentary film THE EDGE (not to be confused with the feature film) is stunning. But seeing the film is not necessary to appreciate the quality and talent of Westlake. His own compositions on this CD, and his arrangement of Purcell's work, are simply beautiful. They touch at a spiritual part of the listener, evoking the ancient landscape and moving one closer to the spirit which permeates the Australian landscape - the spirit which suffers due to humanity's destruction of nature. An outstanding CD, accompanied by a small booklet which contains representative shots of the landscape which is the focus of Westlake's careful, skilled attention.

5 out of 5 stars Vine a highly underrated genius.......2002-04-03

This CD is a must for anybody interested in contemporary classical music. Vine is relatively well-known here in Australia, but the music on this CD and other works of his suggest that he should be more widely recognised.
The performances of the works on this disc are irreproachable- Michael Kieran Harvey's fiery, passionate and tender performance of the Piano Sonata no.2 is simply breathtaking. His attention to detail is incredible and this performance simply illuminates Vine's wonderful music. A personal favourite of mine is the String Quartet No.3- this piece has it all, excitement in large doses, interesting rhythms and harmonies, but plenty of old-fashioned beautiful tunes as well. Vine is such a versatile composer in that he seems equally at home writing complex, rhythmical music as he does writing beautiful melodies. Both are well represented on this disc! Heartily recommended.
