5 out of 5 stars She is fantastic.......2000-06-16

I have heard Ms. Beiser play some of these pieces before in her extraordinary concerts, often set in accesible atmospheric settings. Now to have them on a CD is too good to be true. The playing as always is a mixture of the challenging, the sublime and the mystical. People should check out her other work and become a Beiser groupie!

5 out of 5 stars Forget what you think you know about the cello.......2000-06-09

This album is extraordinary. Listening is its own reward, but if you ever get a chance to see this performer, RUSH! She's unbelievable in live performance. This is what happens when a brilliantly talented virtuoso with the requisite classical training expresses her interest in the wide world and shrugs off the constraints of the classical canon. This is MUSIC. Why you have to search "classical" in order to get it to come up, I don't know (are you listening, Amazonees?). This is as vital, contemporary, stimulating and far-reaching as any current CD - in any genre. If you like classical, you'll find this rewarding. if you like jazz, you'll find it inspired and highly individual. And if you like "world" (that dubious genre; see what the liner notes say about that!) then you'll find all the exoticism and unique sounds/ethnic strains you want. This is music that moves you, fills your soul and makes you smarter too. The playing is beautiful; her taste in composers (and their quality) is incomparable. You won't have anything else like it in your collection, and it will give you listening pleasure for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Around the World in 60 Minutes.......2000-05-30

The pieces Miss Beiser has chosen for this disc are really wonderful! I understand that she has been performing these pieces around the world for years, and has finally recorded them. In Kebyar Maya, I wonder how she was able to make all those different sounds with just the cello. It sounds like there are many different instruments playing, not just cello. I wish they would put the cover picture up on the site - it's a photo of Maya in a yoga position (I think it's called the Ohm, legs crossed, hands palms together), with rays coming out from her hands. It's pretty cool.

Harrison is one of the few American composers who has applied Eastern musical modes (and instruments) to American music. His Suite for Symphonic Strings (1961) is a playful accretion of Renaissance stamping dance with a standard canon and fugue structure. Ung's Inner Voices (1986) reflects Ung's Cambodian background, even though there isn't any Cambodian music in it. It's a dazzling work (we need to hear more of this guy's music). McPhee, who died in 1964, provides us with a strangely minimalistic Tabuh-Tabuhan (1936). It's based on Balinese gamelan playing. Hard to believe that Reich was just a toddler when this came out. --Paul Cook

        Album Description

The work of Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung (b. 1942) represents one of the more successful attempts to accomplish a musical integration of East and West, resulting in a style that is uniquely his own. In general, Ung's music is resplendent with lush romantic harmonies, rhythmic complexities, and lyrical melodic passages, an amalgamation that, together with his own idiosyncratic compositional technique, has evolved over the course of time.

Both Asian and Western elements are readily discernible in Spiral VI (1992), probably one of Ung's best examples of achieving a true integration of these ideas. Spiral VI is constantly changing, expanding, or contracting, and has been described as having a "floating" feeling despite its precise rhythmic notation. Seven Mirrors (1997) is a challenging solo piano work that is comprised of seven short virtuosic movements, each of a different character, but all linked either musically or thematically. Familiar piano gestures reflect postmodern characteristics that prevailed in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and each movement is assigned a fanciful title that "describes" the nature of the music.

Grand Alap (1996) has a fascinating array of sonic effects, both in the instrumental and vocal parts. More than thirteen different percussion instruments are in constant motion under the amplified cello passages, providing continuity and unity to the work.

In the words of the composer, the source of inspiration for Grand Spiral ("Desert Flowers Bloom") (1992) was "the image of a translucent piece of sculpture that is constantly moving and rotating in the desert while reflecting sunlight as perhaps a prism would." The post-impressionist aspect of Grand Spiral should come as no surprise since Debussy was one of Ung's early heroes of composition. This work shows Ung to be a consummate orchestrator, with an uncanny sense of how to combine instrumental colors in order to produce his desired result. Of related interest: 80412

5 out of 5 stars Caught by Virtuosity.......2001-04-06

Things don't seem to be what they really are when you first hear this disc! How is it possible to have so much happening, at such a virtuosic level with only two musicians? This is gorgeous music played exquisitely and begs to be played many times. Every aspect of the disc yells out, "Exceptional quality!" from the elegant design by a fellow named Appleton, to the linear notes by Greg Sandow and especially the music itself. These two folks, members of the Bang on The Can All-Stars, play this music as if it was made for them - and, of course, it was. All of the compositions by George Lewis, Chinary Ung, Nick Didkovsky and others were composed for this duo of Maya Beiser (cello) and Steven Schick (percussion). If you want to hear the future of serious chamber music, pick this up.

I have heard Grand Spiral played live. It was very very engaging. Chinary Ung writes some very nice music. It's very raw sometimes - which also is very likeable. If you like this CD, buy it. Support a very good and deserving composer.
