A light and legato approach to Strauss waltzes from the young Welser-Most.......2006-01-05
Franz Welser-Most was thirty in 1990 when he recorded these famous Strauss waltzes and two overtures (Gypsy Baron and Fledermaus). EMU clearly believed they had found their natural Staussian--they assigned a Thomas Hampson operetta recital and the rarely heard Simplicius to W-M. Certianly he has the touch; the Viennese rhythms are impeccable, always alive and moving. There is not a trace of the mechanical; however, W-M may be a touch too legato and light compared to a conductor like Karajan who fully dramatize these works (this is one gypsy baron without Magyar swagger or fire).
If you want waltzes that glide without touching the floor, sing sweetly, and radiate dappled sunlight, this is a five-star recording. I am holding back a star because the London Phil. doesn't play exceptionally, and I do like more drama. Even so, this super-budget CD is miles ahead of programs I've heard from Boskovsky, Mazzel, Kempe, and quite a few others.
Looking for Vienna Ballroom Music?.......2004-11-05
This is it! A inexpensive yet elegant Strauss waltz collection featuring London Philharmonic Orchestra led by Franz Welzer-Most.
Although seven cuts is its entirety, it is over sixty-five minutes of just gorgeous sound to practice your waltz moves or just enjoy this relaxing, beautiful music.
A steal of a deal at this price.
Superb performances of truly great music........2004-05-01
Johann Strauss II is that most rare of composers--a writer whose works gain rapturous popularity with the public while also garnering the praise of the most austere critics. Strauss was the most popular and financially successful composer of his time, travelling the world with his orchestras and making millions (yes, millions) from both his waltzes and his operettas. Meanwhile, musicians on the level of Hans von Bülow, Richard Strauss, Johannes Brahms, and Richard Wagner marvelled at the fertility of his melodic gift and the brilliance of his orchestration. For a composer, this is the ultimate dream, and none have so totally achieved it as Strauss. Perhaps Gershwin comes closest.
In these wonderful performances from the early 1990s, Frans Welzer-Möst, then the wunderkind of the conducting world, performs Strauss' finest waltzes with the London Philharmonic. If you are going to buy only one Strauss recording, let this be it. Welzer-Möst and the Philharmonic completely capture the joy and vibrancy of Strauss' music, and these renditions are possessed of an unusual rhythmic vitality. Perhaps it was the youth and enthusiasm of the conductor, but this is as fine a Strauss recording as I've ever heard.
The waltzes of Strauss capture the romantic neverland of late-19th century Vienna better than any other music. Of course, that world never actually existed, but listening to Strauss' music, one wishes it had.

Finally, an equal to Piers Lane!.......2003-01-17
Before this album, Piers Lane was the only pianist to record an entire album of virtuoso piano transcriptions on Strauss waltzes. Where technically Piers Lane is more aggressive and high strung, Scherbakov's technique is fluid, effortless, and rock-solid. Most pianists would avoid music with such formidable difficulties. Scherbakov tackles each piece with an unmatched technical security. This is Russian piano playing at its best! His tone is full and warm. The charm of each piece is perfectly captured. The rhythm and rubato breath naturally. This cd has been reissued for some reason, so buy it while you can. Nearly everything Scherbakov touches turns to gold! This album is no exception!

Spacious recording, Viennese charm, grand selection.......2004-11-06
Although this disc can in no way compete with the musicianship and the atmospherics on Willi Boskovsky's New Year concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic, it is nonetheless praiseworthy and recommendable. Ondrej Lenard has proved often enough on disc that he is a fine conductor, and whenever one sees 'Festival Orchestra' on a CD label, one knows that the recording was (probably) made using musicians specially selected for this occasion. The thin Naxos booklet gives no details whatsoever, so it is anyone's guess who is really playing here. Nevertheless, the result is good: The recording is a good deal more direct and spacious than on many other early Naxos discs (this one was recorded in January 1988), and the playing (Strauss is taken at a comfortable speed) is rather attractive with a good deal of Viennese charm about it, despite being recorded in Bratislava in Slovakia. And the Waltz selection is grand: here are all those tunes that many of us grew up with and have always loved
Enjoyable Performances of Delightful Music.......2004-10-16
This bargain-priced CD is a perfectly acceptable recording of Strauss Waltzes, and contains some of the most well-known ones. If you wanted one recording of Strauss Waltzes, this would be an ideal choice.
Confidently recommended

Customer Reviews:
A sparkling performance, full of fun and great singing.......2001-01-25
What a joy to find this recording! It was originally broadcast live from the San Francisco Opera in 1973. The cast is Joan Sutherland (Rosalinde), Nolan Van Way (Eisenstein), Judith Blegen (Adele), Ragnar Ulfung (Alfred), Huguette Tourangeau (Orlofsky), Bruce Yarnell (Falke), Daniel Sullivan (Dr. Blind), Spiro Malas (Frank), and Walter Slezak (Frosch). Richard Bonynge conducts.
Musically, this performance just can't be beat. Sutherland sings with beauty, intelligence, and a sure flair for comedy. Judith Blegen sings Adele's two arias with an ease that eludes most Adeles. Her coloratura in the Laughing Song sounds more like laughter than usual, without any loss of tonal beauty. Bonynge supports the singers with tempi that bring out their best. Listen to the end of the first act, when the tempo slows and Sutherland floats a few high notes over the ensemble. This sounds more like the end of the sextet in Lucia than any other Fledermaus I have ever heard. And it works!
But what really distinguishes this performance is that everybody is having fun and relishing every moment. At one point, Judith Blegen, who also studied violin, pulls out a violin and accompanies herself on it. Even Dame Joan pokes fun at herself: Spying her maid at Orlofsky's ball, she fumes, "It's Adele... and in MY gown... CUT DOWN!" Watergate was still a current event at the time of this broadcast, and the script is peppered with references to it: "The best of people are going to jail nowadays -- doctors, lawyers, even politicians" and "Are you telling the truth?... To the best of my recollection at this point in time." And could there ever be a better Frosch than Walter Slezak? Who else could handle low comedy while lending an air of Viennese charm?
The performance is in English, with occasional forays into other languages. Listen for the moment when Eisenstein and Frank, both masquerading as Frenchmen, are encouraged to speak to each other in their native language. Their exchange is in most recordings of Fledermaus, but it is so much better here where they have the advantage of playing to an audience. And Sutherland sings the Czardas (beautifully) in Hungarian. According to the program notes, she later recalled with amusement that a review of this performance said that her rendition of the Czardas was so unintelligible it may as well have been sung in Hungarian. (Incidentally, her diction is fine in this recording. You will understand all of her dialog and almost all of her singing -- I never understand all of anyone's singing in opera.)
In case it isn't obvious, I highly recommend this recording. If only there were a video....
Need more information.......2000-10-01
This recording is great. I would almost reccommend this over Karajan's version in 1960 with Decca. I need more information. Obviously this is a live recording, but what about the rest of the cast. When was this recorded? Are the singers speaking or are there actors? And it sometimes it sounds like they're speaking dialogue in German and other times in English, so is this an English or German recording, in terms of the dialogue.
Okay, enough of my questions, about the recording. Joan Sutherland voice is heart-breakingly georgeous. I've never heard "Der Heimat" sung that way before. The audience and the laughing is intoxicating, something you can't find in studio recordings. I laughed just listening to it. If someone can help me with my questions please e-mail me at cade_cannon@hotmail.com.
Gorgeous voice.......1999-05-11
This opera is of course no challedge to Dame Joan's phenomenal technique. But it is just amazing to me how incredibly gorgeous her voice is here. Talk about total package!

Wiener Blut.......2003-09-16
The famous Strauss waltz Wiener Blut is here, and it benefits from a performance where all the repeats are observed. A far less famous waltz, Promotionen, is also included on this 76 minutes CD. It has the most solemn introduction of any Strauss waltz known to me.
One of the many gains that comes with an exploration of this complete Johann Strauss Jnr edition is the opportunity to hear the relatively neglected quadrilles that formed a large part of the composer's output. There are two here, and they display high spirits and ingenuity aplenty.
Johannes Wildner and the Czechoslovak orchestra are in good form here and, as usual in this series, the recording quality and the annotations are excellent.

Mixed Bag.......2005-06-05
There are many better renditions of the “Blue Danube” on the market than this rather smooth and uncontured one from Slovakia, so if you are merely looking for this Strauss super-hit, it would be advisable to go elsewhere (try Willy Boskovsky with the Vienna Philharmonic on Decca). But taken as a whole, this is still quite a pleasing disc, the nine numbers here having been, as I can only assume, culled from the Complete Johann Strauss Edition published by Marco Polo at full-price. The CSR Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ondrej Lenard, makes up for the uninspired opening with fair renditions of the “Pizzicato Polka” and the “Tausendundeine Nacht” waltz, followed later by acceptable versions of “Frühlingsstimmen” and the “Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka”. The playing is not always brilliant, but the overall impression is quite good, especially as the recorded sound is better than on a lot of early Naxos discs (the recordings here were made in 1988 and 1989): if you listen at a slightly higher volume than usual, you will notice that there is much detail captured, with some excellent bass, and only occasionally does the empty recording venue lead to that “cavernous” sound that is so often heard on Naxos. One of the most interesting pieces on this disc is the Overture to Strauss’ opera “Indigo und die 40 Räuber”, here played by the CSSR State Philharmonic from Kosice, directed by Alfred Walter. I have had occasion in the past to criticize Kosice recordings for Naxos, but here both the playing and the sound are superior to the Bratislava CSR SO; the Quadrille from “Die Fledermaus” is also given a spirited rendering by the same orchestra, and it is only the waltz “Wo die Citronen blüh’n” which fails to deliver the excitement that one can expect from Strauss. The last piece on the disc, the “Morgenblätter” (morning newspapers!), is here played by the Polish State Philharmonic, directed by Johannes Wildner, in a more than acceptable rendition in an acoustic that is obviously better than at either of the two Slovakian venues. All in all a mixed bag that can give a good deal of pleasure without in any way being ideal.

Excellent Straus transciptions.......2005-11-16
Very fine playing of Straus transcriptions, including many of the most famous themes from the Waltz King. No bombast here--just beautifully judged and nuanced renditions from a very fine pianist who obviously loves this music. Highly enjoyable. I would like to hear more from this fine artist. Good natural sound.
