The Letter by Judy Garland.......2007-05-16
The Letter tells a story with singing by Judy and naration by John Ireland. It makes for great listening.
GARLAND.......2007-05-13
THIS IS A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF GARLAND VOICE BOTH SINGING AND TALKING. THE ALBUM IS UNIQUE AMOUNG THE MANY ALBUMS THAT SHE HAS AVAILABLE.
Disappointed.......2007-05-13
I love all of Judy Garland's work and this early concept type of work I thought I would like better than I did. It was an early attempt, and probably very innovative in its time, but seems lacking today. However, any dedicated Judy Garland fan like myself will want it anyway.
AT LAST !.......2007-05-07
"The Letter" with Judy Garland is truly a classic and was for a very long time not availabale (not on LP but also never released on CD). The last time was some 40 years ago on an abridged (= missing 2 numbers) Capitol LP, retitled "Love in Central Park". Now, at last, the masterpiece is here ! With original title, not abridged, with original LP-cover and in excellent Full Dimensional Stereo Sound ! DON'T MISS IT !
Frank Kruger/ The Netherlands
Sure Winner.......2007-05-03
Miss Garland was at the top of her form when this was recorded. Her voice is clear and secure. The Greenwich Village sequence is sublime.

Customer Reviews:
Faure Essentials.......2007-05-29
If you want to persuade someone to listen to Faure then this is the album to begin with. It contains the very best known melodies.
music inside you.......2005-10-01
Have you ever felt music inside you when watching the sun going down, when felling the breeze in your hair, when smelling the grass in a gentle summer night...? The music of this CD may remind you that part of yourself that we may tend to forget in our busy life, liked the words of Celibidache which I liked very much: "the music is not the notes, YOU are the music"!
You would feel in this way, when listening to this CD.
An excellent compilation of Faure's work.......2003-02-15
I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.
Romance.......2002-11-23
Bought this CD originally because of Romance, but I like it all. This is a new composer for me and I'm glad I found Faure'.
good value.......2002-03-01
i'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get an inexpensive taste for faure's music. The recordings are decent, and the selection is interesting. After this, check out his nocturnes for piano and of course the Requiem.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

From the Label
Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

Beyond words ..........2007-03-22
Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.
If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.
While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.
Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17
This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.
Not their best album.......2006-02-27
For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.
Excellent !!.......2005-10-26
I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.
sacred.......2005-10-23
I enjoyed most of the music. My main complaint is the repeated songs from John McDermott's Faithfullness CD. For us fans of John the repeats seem a bit too much. I think there are six reteats.

Album Description
Both fiddler Carroll and guitarist Doyle began their careers young, recognized as instrumental virtuosos. Carroll won the Senior All-Ireland Championship at age 18, not a small feat for an American. While Carroll traveled eastward across the Atlantic, Doyle moved westward, relocating from his family home in Dublin to New York. Introduced to Irish music by his grandfather Tommy, Doyle was playing professionally by age 16, and soon joined an energetic collection of New-York based Irish musicians, including Eileen Ivers and Seamus Egan. Doyle's partnership with Egan became Solas, the supergroup which would come to define Irish-American music. Doyle pioneered a rhythmic, sophisticated approach to Irish guitar accompaniment, setting a new standard for the instrument.
Doyle and Carroll deliver gracefully, with the squeaky clean gem only they could pull off: an all instrumental, self-produced recording with no additional musicians necessary. Most of the tunes on the thirteen-track In Play are Carroll originals, with one Doyle tune, one Carroll/Doyle co-write, one Johnny Harling tune, and three traditional melodies arranged by the duo. Doyle offers a subtle texture change with bouzouki parts on several tracks, and both musicians explore the range of their expressive capabilities, proving themselves equally at home with heartbreaking slow airs and upbeat dance tunes. In Play is a record of consistent beauty from three old friends - Carroll, Doyle, and Irish Music.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps the best example of original traditional music out there.......2006-08-02
This CD serves as perhaps the best example of originally written Irish traditional music. Most of the tunes have been written by fiddler Liz Carroll, who is both at the top of her writing and playing form. John Doyle, probably the world's best Irish guitarist, is also at the top of his game, displaying his prowess on the bouzouki as well as the guitar.
In terms of Irish traditional music, you couldn't find a better duo if you tried and this album is a fantastic example of what these two can do together.
excellent.......2006-02-26
This collection of tunes, featuring extraordianry work on fiddle and guitar, is truly wonderful. I love the fact that Liz Carroll's tunes are very innovative while at the same time faithful to the Irish tradition in music. In my opinion this is her best album in recent years, and this is very high praise considering all the great albums she's been a part of. With just fiddle and guitar on this one, the talents really shine through. Most of the tunes are lively and catchy, and all are very well done. For those who like this album as much as I do, I also recommend checking out the Liz Carroll album, and A Friend Indeed.
Absolutely outstanding.......2005-12-09
One evening, driving home, I heard the "Hunter's Moon" track from this CD on a local radio station. As soon as I got home, I logged on to Amazon.com and ordered a copy. It's an outstanding album all the way through: the performances sound spontaneous (even in the studio setting), the recording quality is excellent, and the tunes are well selected to show off both performers' range of styles, from cheery to meditative to bumptious. When I read the liner notes later, I was astounded to note how many of the tunes were original compositions by the two performers (mostly Liz Carroll) -- the melodies are interesting and piquant, but they're so thoroughly in tune with tradition that they sound as if they've been around for hundreds of years. The album is an impressive achievement in both composition and performance, and if I could give it 10 stars I would.
Celtic music lover.......2005-11-26
If there are any two musicians better at their instruments than these two I'd be surprised. The album is great and the chemistry these two create is wonderful to listen to and even better to see. The album doesn't allow you to see Liz's sly little smiles or John's amazing body rhythm and hear Liz's great humor but you can hear the energy these two create. I've been fortunate to see these two on personal appearances many times and am among their biggest fans. John has appeared on the more recent albums Liz has done. This is their first joint release. May there be many more to follow. Don't miss this album or any others that Liz and John have done
The best in fiddle and guitar.......2005-10-30
Liz Carroll and John Doyle are wondeful musicians on their own. When they combine their talents, it's a real treat.

Lovely readings, but the music is pastoral to the point of stupor.......2007-03-14
In Britain the modernist movement was a sidelight to the pastoral movement, a constant outpouring of pastures, meadows, and brooks painted in soft pastels. The most bracing of the pastoral composers was Vaughan Williams, but here we get the palest of all, Frederick Delius, whose peaceful dreaming occupies this whole CD except for Bax's Tintagel at the beginning and Ireland's London Over. at the end. Beloved as Delius is in the UK, to my ears these five works are a single, long soporific wandering. Tunes vaguely flow in and around the mists, none of them memorable. Harmonies are hazy but uninteresting. Ireland ad Bax rise to a little more excitment--it would be hard not to--but Tintagel, King Arthur's ancestral castle on the wild rocks of Cornwall, seems pretty sleepy, too, except for the occasional outbreak of a storm. Ireland's London isn't exactly on the move, either.
Enough. Lovers of British pastoralism will be delighted by these ripe performances from the hand of Sir John Barbiroli, while the rest of us can loll our heads and smile as we nap.

The Irish Tenors are an acquired taste that, it seems, nearly everyone has acquired. On Home for Christmas, John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan create a stirring seasonal follow-up to their extremely popular self-titled debut of Irish standards. On this disc, we get some of the best-loved holiday songs performed by the tenors in their trademark, Emerald Isle vocal style. Though the disc boasts a 78-piece orchestra, don't expect big-band arrangements on these tunes; if anything, these are intimate performances, with the tenors front-and-center. Each vocalist gets his own solo turns, but there are plenty of tunes featuring all three: "Joy to the World," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "O Holy Night," The Holy City," "Silent Night," and "Amazing Grace." If you still haven't had your fill of holiday music, check out McDermott's solo Christmas album from 1998, on which the vocalist performs an eclectic mix of standards and lesser-known holiday gems. --Jason Verlinde

Beautiful Christmas Music.......2005-10-26
I really enjoy this music. I like the quality and style of music presented by the Irish Tenors, and I like Christmas music. This is the perfect CD for me. I like hearing it from early November through the holiday season. I have given this album as a gift, and it was much appreciated. I would recommend it for anyone who likes traditional Christmas music.
BREATH - TAKING !!!.......2001-03-07
I have the CD and the tape of this item and I have also seen the Concert twice.TWICE !! The most amazing part of it is when Anthony sings his LITTLE JESUS BOY. When I went to the concert the first time I wasn't really prepared for the effect that song would have on me. On the CD & tape he sings with a Choral Group to back him up. EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST LINES OF THAT SONG !!!!!.
IT IS ONLY HIS VOICE WE HEAR, AND WHAT A VOICE !!! But at the live shows, he does the same thing, but without the music, and the effect it has IS LIKE A PHYSICAL BLOW TO THE SENCES. I think every one in the place just held our breath until he was finished. IT'S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUND THAT EVER CAME FROM THE MOUTH OF ANY SINGER I HAVE EVER HEARD. I play that one number over and over just to hear ANTHONY'S VOICE. I guess by now you know that I think all THE IRISH TENORS are great, but there is always something special about each of them on certain numbers they each sing. I especially like the trio doing AMAZING GRACE. They do it so well together. Just can't wait for the new "STUFF" FROM YOUR #1 FAN. JOAN WAY
Home for Christmas--A Masterpiece.......2000-05-28
Like millions of others I discovered the Irish Tenors through PBS. I promptly began looking for anything else by these wonderful performers and found this Cd. The music is soul-satisfying as the Christmas music is all sacred (the closest to secular is "Good King Wenceslas"). The arrangements are in turn glorious, tender, and sweet. "Suo Gan" by McDermott, ''Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "The Wexford Carol" by Kearns are highlights. Of the ensemble pieces, "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World" stand out. But the crowning selection is "The Holy City." We are wearing the album out and it's only May. We'll have to have another copy for Christmas!
Live From Belfast.......2000-04-15
I first videotaped the "Live from Belfast" performance on PBS.I don't know how many times I have watched it. Then I bought the CD (as well as the "Live from Dublin" CD and video), thinking it would have a song book, but it didn't. That is the only thing I could wish for. I am delighted to find the "Home for Christmas" CD, as I have been told by two different sources that it is unavailable. As someone else expressed, I am glad Finbar Wright was given a chance, even though I am sorry for the occasion that made it possible. I am of Irish descent, and their songs (and especially their interpretations) touched me deeply. I would also like to see a list of other recordings, especially of Anthony Kearns. Pavarotti and Bocelli are the only tenors I might rank as equals with Anthony for ability, pure beauty of tone, and control. I have tried repeatedly to access their web site, but it is unavailable.
Breathtaking.......2000-03-19
This collection goes straight to your heart. It's their voices, their song selections, and most of all their enthusiasm and heart that makes this albumn shine. I listen to it over and over and it still is fresh each time. The best Xmas singing ever as far as I am concerned!

Just a year after their smash breakthrough debut album--itself still riding high in the charts--the Irish Tenors have added another delightfully varied collection to their discography. Live in Belfast again showcases the group's obvious concert charisma from a performance given in February 2000. It's a generous smorgasbord of medleys, traditional numbers, and songs from popular sources (including "Scorn Not His Simplicity," which Sinead O'Connor has interpreted)--mixing nostalgic sentimentality with selections of bittersweet melancholy. Binding the whole together is the unmistakable stylish charm of the Irish Tenors, whether singing in solos or in ensembles. But the biggest surprise for fans already hooked on the Tenors is the introduction of Finbar Wright as replacement for original member John McDermott. Wright's bright, romantic voice easily wins over a potentially skeptical crowd--especially in the dreamy "Isle of Innisfree"--and blends nicely with his colleagues. (McDermott, who had to bow out of the performance due to the death of his mother, makes a surprise appearance to solo in a memorable and touching "The Last Rose of Summer"--given as a tribute to his parents--and to rejoin the Tenors for "Red Is the Rose.") The arrangements by Tenors producer Frank McNamara are played with zest by the Orchestra Warsaw Sinfonia. --Tom May

Great Music and Outstanding Voices.......2007-03-28
My wife and I saw these tenors live and on stage and we were truly impressed. Their voices blend beautifully and they present a well rounded variety of songs. We so enjoyed the first CD that we bought this current one.
Time for a new one.......2001-10-19
I bought this CD, (plus the video) in July 2000 and listened to it so much I think it must be just about worn out.!!!The video I have seen so often I bet I have seen every idiosyncrasy of each of them. The Tenors are almost my total pastime. About 12 hours a day, listening and viewing. I "met" them July 22/00 and have been to four concerts, and I'm still impressed by the joyous sounds of their voices.
It's been a lomg time since I wrote my last review of this CD, but I hope I have helped to encourage others to enjoy the thrill of the most magnificent voices of their lives.
The Tenor's #1 Fan,,,, Joan Way
Wonderful music, wonderful voices.......2001-05-31
I do not claim to be a musical expert. It has always been my contention that music which makes the listener feel good, which raises the spirits and makes the heart glad, is worthy of being heard. Such is this CD. I don't listen to it to search for flaws, flubs, failings and screw-ups. I listen to it because it makes me happy. I am of Irish ancestry, and this wonderful music stirs a core deep within my soul. I got to hear some traditional Irish folk music I'd never heard before. I would hope that all those who listen to this CD would choose to enumerate its merits based on the fact that this music is meant to lighten the soul. It never was meant to be held up to intense scrutiny, because it is folk music. These are the songs the people sang. They weren't meant to be grand, classical opera, and should not be regarded or critiqued as such. They are beautiful and moving, just as they stand, and I am grateful that God gave these four men such voices to sing these old tunes and to preserve them for the generations to come. God knows we need positive, beautiful music now more than ever.
Professional on professionals.......2001-05-05
I am taking from the best in the world. I have met Pavarotti's teachers (Joan Doanerman and Joan Sutherland) and also take from them. I am very well-known in musical analyzing and teaching. I have read all reviews, and personally, many of you need to learn much more about proper vocal technique to be a critic. The voice must flow, with support (breath), low larynx, etc. All four tenors possess the proper singing qualities. However, stage presence, song interpretation, and musicianship also take into affect. Finbar Wright needs to continue his musicianship. He possesses much more romanticism than he shows. Also, anyone can say words like "texturing, spellbinding and dominance," and sound like a knowledgeable critic. However, these words are thrown into sports review as well. Face it folks, know what you are saying. John McDermott has a beautiful voice, but it is a much different classical style than many people know. John is a Celtic Tenor, which means that his under- and overtones will sound much different than the other three. The symphony is NOT too dominant, David Schierholz. If you have worked with the Met recording studios, than you can talk with me, because I have sat in on them. These are live performances, not takes in a studio. Folks, I am a born and bred Irishman. These men are great, but there needs to be more of there individual literature available. I would love to find Anthony Kearns classical recordings. Then, when you have studied and understand the nature of the voice and theatre, then you can write your reviews.
Tenners for Tenors.......2001-02-16
This cd and video was my introduction to the wonderful "Irish Tenors". Seperately each is spellbinding. Together they are nothing short of magical. Finbar Wright is a dashingly romantic figure while Ronan Tynan is most compelling. Anthony Kearns will be a major star someday in the opera world. His voice is clear and strong. Wright's voice soars in songs such as "Carrickfergus" and "Isle of Innisfree". He seems a bit nervous which is understandable given he had only 10 days to prepare for this concert. He was asked literally days before the performance to step in for John McDermott. Thank goodness he did! The one downer for me was the appearance of John McDermott as his voice is not my cup of tea.

Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11
This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.
Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.
It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.
Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.
