It was faulty on the last title to be played The Carnival of Venice.......2007-06-01
I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04
As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.
A Wonderful Collection.......2004-01-26
This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.
Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21
Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".
Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.
Quite the CD.......2001-04-17
If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.
And comrades, let me say that you can't call yourself a member of the human race until you've heard Wynton Marsalis' performance of JB Arban's "Variations of Carnival of Venice." It's literally perfect. Buy this today.

A triumph.......2006-08-13
What's wrong with a couple of piano concertos by Hummel? Well, it is simple: they're very difficult to play. But they are great to listen to!
That means that if you want the full experience of listening to these concertos, you need to get a recording of them by someone who can really play them. And Stephen Hough does a superb job; this is one of Hough's early great recordings.
Hummel, a pupil of Mozart as a child, was, of course, was a fine composer. I think Hummel's wind concerti may be his most striking works, but I also especially love the B-minor piano concerto on this disk. The A-minor concerto is good as well. If you haven't heard these concertos before, you truly ought to try this CD.
Stephen Hough's first hit recording.......2006-07-11
This recording of the glorious Piano Concerto in A minor Opus 85, and Piano Concerto in B Minor Opus 89 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel was the first recording to bring the spectacular British pianist Stephen Hough to my attention. He went on to sign his exclusive contract with Hyperion and has produced miracle after miracle in his recordings since, winning many awards, including being the first pianist to win the coveted McArthur Award, in actuality a huge stipend given soley on already proven merit.
When I was a high school student somewhere around 1969-70 I remember buying an LP on the Turnabout label of pianist Martin Galling playing the Haydn Concerto in D major. Coupled with that well-known piece was a concerto by a composer I had never heard of, Hummel, his Opus 89. Upon playing the record I fell in love with the Hummel: it's mysterious quiet tympani opening ( in a way like that of the Beethoven Violin Concerto), it's florid rather Chopinesque writing, the sheer drive of the music. I went on to seek out as much Hummel on LP as I could, which back then wasn't much. As the years went on I heard and studied and played quite a bit more of Hummel's ouvre. When I saw this CD I immediately wanted it to replace those old cheap vinyl discs. I had no idea at that time who Stephen Hough was. Well, within minutes I was out of my chair and pacing the room! The playing was so blazing with virtuosity and elan, examples of such a gorgeous pianism that I was flabbergasted.
The Galling recordings of these concerti are full of little internal cuts, sometimes to tighten the structure, but often to avoid some real technical nightmares, such as lightning-fast passages in thirds, etc.
People like to say perfection cannot be achieved in this world, but I say it can. This recording is a case in point. It is absolutely perfect. And beautiful. And thrilling.
I would give it 10 stars if I could.
Breathtaking.......2005-08-06
I can only concur with the comments made by the other reviewers. This is an outstanding CD: spacious, gorgeous, early-Romantic musical themes combined with thrilling bravura writing for the piano. The recorded sound is top-drawer, the orchestra respond magnificently to the taut, fluid conducting and, best of all, Stephen Hough simply astonishes with the poetry, vigour, accuracy and fire of his pianism.
I marginally prefer the B minor concerto (Op.89) - it has the most beautiful second subject in the first movement, very reminiscent of Chopin, and some truly adrenaline-pumping passages for the piano. But both works are highly recommended. As others have stated, the two concertos here span the bridge between Mozart and Chopin (although I find them slightly more Chopinesque than Mozartian) and are required listening for anyone with an interest in the development of the piano concerto as an art form or, for that matter, ANYONE who loves great music.
I doubt this recording of the two works will ever be bettered.
UTTERLY ASTONISHING!.......2004-12-17
I based this purchase on a tiny snippet heard in the background on internet radio. The music was engaging, but what caught my ear was the playing. I purchased the disc on a sort of whim, being relatively unfamiliar with Hummel.
I am on cloud nine because I took the leap. It is a virtual tour de force by Mr. Hough.
Hummel's work, I am sure, received short shrift later because it would destroy any but the finest players. Mr. Hough proves his mettle triumphantly! By approaching these works with respect, Mr. Hough et al can drag us (and an apparently grudging musical establishment) along and teach us to appreciate these glorious concerti for the extraordinary pieces they really are.
Hough's precision and speed are supernatural; exactly the qualities required by the works. Icing on the cake is that he shows extraordinary skill in handling the dynamics & pacing as well as a keen sense of communication with the orchestra that borders on psychic. I am astonished and was moved to tears during several of the flourishes. How rare to be that moved by talent and ability in this day and age.
The orchestral accompaniment is top flight and the production quality is superior. It is a stunner on all fronts!!
Kudos to Chandos!
It beggars belief that, as good as these are, I had heard Hummel's name mentioned maybe twice and actually had only heard one trumpet piece. A sad testament to his neglect. I am a convert!!!
I cannot recommend this disc highly enough.
Excellent recording of excellent music.......2003-08-11
Hummel is somewhat a neglected composer, and after hearing these recordings of piano concertos, I can only wonder why.
The music itself is well written, and the piano part is as one would expect from a virtuoso pianhist/composer...brilliant.
The orchestra sounds great, and the soloist is put to the technical an musical test in these pieces. He comes through magnificently!
No ifs ands or buts, highly recommended.

Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22
This album is an incredible showcase for the trumpet and the orchestra, in other words, the trumpet concerto. Hakan Hardenberger, the featured trumpet player, is highly talented and at the top of his game. Even the great jazz and classical trumpeter Winston Marsalis does'nt seem to reach the flights of fancy on the trumpet as does Hakan Hardenberger. Hardenberger masters the trumpet to perfection, capturing every nuance and every tone, from fortissimo fanfares to the softest pianissimo. On this compilation are the trumpet concerti of Baroque and Classical Era composers, among them Corelli and Albinoni and the Classical masters Franz Joseph Haydn and Leopold Mozart, Mozart's father. The sheer scale and magnetism of this music cannot be neglected. It is the greatest gathering of trumpet concerti ever made. The trumpet was perhaps the most fascinating instrument for Baroque composers. The trumpet produces grand, triumphant tones when played forte. It was an instrument that was displayed in ceremonial pomp- weddings, coronations and marches. The Baroque composers were sponsored by kings so they were expected to compose music for trumpet, which could be expressive not only as a fanfare for the king himself, but as an instrument of many dynamics. It can be played softly and slowly, which seems to create a nocturnal, reflective mood and staccato and fast-paced which made the music sound exciting and lively. In my opinion, it was the premier instrument of the Baroque Age.
The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.
superb playing.......2003-10-30
Hardenberger is indeed an extraordinary. The playing is right up there with the best of them. One thing unique to hardnberger is his ability to lock in ever note of every passage reguardless of register, speed, etc. In addition he playes with great character. The only reason i give hims less than 5 stars is because his lyricism, the most important thing, is surpassed by Maurice Andre and Phil Smith without questiong. especially after seing all of them live and buying their CDs. He is definitely among the greatests ever.
The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25
It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players.
Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.
Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.
The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.
Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.
Long live the king!
Virtuosic... Incredible.......2001-08-06
You don't have to be a fan of the instrument in order to appreciate and become overwhelmed by the beauty, the splendor and acrobatics of the trumpet. In the Baroque era, it was a instrument for the royal treatment and heralded arrival of kings and war. The performances here are excellent- Hardenberger, I Musici and Neville Marriner and his orchestra deliver virtuosic renditions of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat, Hummel's, Hertel's, Molter's and Albinoni's concerti, as well as incredible arrangements of Ave Maria by Bach and Albinoni's Adagio.
A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12
Although I love classical music and have done so for a long time, I must confess that I am not a trumpet player. With that said, I must say that these two CDs are wonderful. My first recording of the Hummel and the Haydn concertos was the second Marsalis/Leppard/ECO recording on Sony Classical (titled Wynton Marsalis - The London Concert). Inexperienced with trumpet recordings at the time, I really treasured the CD. After all, a big name artist known for his virtuosity was performing the technically demanding concertos. What more could you ask for? After a while, though, I began to feel that Marsalis didn't really do it for me in these works. Sure, he played with a flair (and what a flair it was), but he lacked the focused, rich tone that I've come to associate with great trumpet players (Herseth comes to mind here).
The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.
All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

One of my favorite baroque recordings, if only because it was my introduction to Neruda. Eklund's performance is, as always, incredible. There many flattering adjectives that would properly describe this album, so buy it and pick the your favorite.

Andre & Karajan Make Magic.......2003-07-22
At first look, this disc may come as a surprise to you. Herbert von Karajan is not generally regarded as an accompanist, or as a conductor of baroque or classical-period material, yet here he is with trumpeter Maurice Andre in brilliant recordings of Trumpet Concertos by Hummel, L. Mozart, Telemann and Vivaldi. Another thing Karajan is not generally known for is the great recordings he made for EMI (and to a lesser extent Decca), as most associate him exclusively with the Berlin Philharmonic and the DG label. Many of his great EMI recordings have been released recently in the "Karajan Edition" series, but a few, like this title, have now been included as part of the "Great Recordings of the Century" series (though mostly his opera recordings). My only problem with this fine disc is that it is basically a straight reissue (aside from remastering) of the original vinyl LP, which means it only logs in at just over 45 minutes. But my dissatisfaction stems only from the fact that I am greedy, and would love to have had more to savor from this wonderful collaboration between Andre and Karajan.

A Joy.......2007-04-14
What I like about Wynton Marsalis' trumpet sound is its shrill clear tones that give it a sort of independence no matter the orchestral accompaniment in the background. The timeless melodies of Antonio Vivaldi come to life with Marsalis playing his instrument. It's a joy to witness the handshake across the centuries between geniuses through the glory of music.
Why is he so big??.......2005-10-16
At best a mediocre jazz trumpeter-he should stick to classical music. One would be far better off purchasing music from any great classic trumpet player such as Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Louis, Miles, Fats Navarro, Hot Lips Page, Buck Clayton,- or any other superior player. Just because he plays a Monette and worships Louis doesn't mean he can play jazz.
one of my favorites.......2004-05-15
my 2 favorite classical albums are "Bernstein Appalachian Spring Suite" and this one. Wynton Marsalis is unbelievably gifted and it's awesome to listen to. It's impossible how Wynton Marsalis plays Flight of the Bumblebee, blows me away everytime I hear it.
4 stars, not 5 because last few tracks aren't that great, but 14 out of 17 MONEY tracks makes this one of my alltime favs.
Wonderful Selection of Wynton's Work.......2002-08-28
Marsalis cannot be regarded as anything but one of the great musicians of the last few decades. His historic feat of winning Grammy awards in both the Jazz AND Classical genres is a testament to his musical genius. While Wynton's contribution and leadership in the jazz world has been of greater consequence, his classical brilliance shouldn't be overlooked.
These selections are a testament to Marsalis' amazing trumpet-playing. Whatever your musical background, you will be thrilled and enthralled by his mastery of the instrument.
Technically speaking, Marsalis is impeccable, with an ebullient tone to compliment his flawless technique. His virtuosic abilities are on full display in Jules Levy's "Grand Russian Fantasia", a mainstay of old virtuoso cornetists like Herbert Clarke. Also entertaining is Marsalis' take on Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major", with Marsalis dubbing himself over twice to create a soaring trumpet trio.
A wonderful addition to your classical or brass collection.
Enjoying Wynton in many ways.......2001-08-02
This excellent recording of Wynton Marsalis is wonderful not only for trumpet players, but for anyone. The many different styles presented in this one recording provide a refreshening variety and the overall effect is very pleasing to the mind as well as the ear. The only reason for rating it four stars is that five stars should be given sparingly to add emphasis- just as standing ovations should. I reccommend this recording for anyone who loves the pure sound of brass in any form.

Marsalis delivers again.......2007-01-30
If you like trumpet concertos, you cannot go wrong with this album.
This is a perfect album..........2006-08-16
People may solely know Marsalis as a world-class Jazz musician, but he's... at worst... pretty darn good on Classical works too. He does have a strong background in both Jazz and Classical. And he played all of the pieces very well, including those requiring killer high notes. Forget all the negative responses; he does an absolutely great job!
This album features some of the most beloved works for trumpet, all which were composerd during the Baroque and Classical era. The original release has him performing concertos by Haydn, Leopold Mozart (Wolfgang's dad), and Hummel, as well as a concerto for trumpet and 2 oboes by Fasch. The Haydn is above all a classic for all Classically trained trumpet players.
The bonus tracks not included in the former releast, however, makes it even better; two exciting concertos requiring killer high notes (even up to a high A!), and another one featuring two trumpets (even though Marsalis played both parts using multitrack - would have been nicer if he worked with another trumpet player, perhaps Maurice Andre). Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, the latter of the works with high notes, is a piece you're likely to hear in one place or another, and it's a must for every trumpet player to check it out. All works in general require a great deal of virtuosity and musicality, so like any Maynard Ferguson piece, it's pretty darn hard to master.
This is a perfect album whether you're a Wynton Marsalis fan, or enjoy listening to any hard-core trumpet music regardless of genre.

Album Description
Three hundred years of viola repertoire are represented in the enormous time span of this release. One of the earliest composers to use solo viola in an instrumental work was Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). His Concerto in G is the oldest surviving viola concerto. Johann Neopomuk Hummel (1778-1837) is known today principally for his piano compositions, yet he completed compositions for every type and form of music other than the symphony. Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) composed, on the occasion of the death of the English King George V in 1936, the Trauermusik. The echoes of folk music dominate many of the works by the Israeli composer Oedoen Partos (1907-1977). The composer Alfred Schnittke, born in 1934, reveals the form of his viola composition written in 1989 in its title: Monologue. Rainer Moog was principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974 to 1978. He has performed all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician.
