The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10
Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.
An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01
The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.
Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02
"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."
The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.
A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.
The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".
Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body
The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16
I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.
This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27
No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08
I'm one of those The Sound of Music addicted, having lost the track of how many times I've seen it whatever the format is. Therefore, it was basically for curiosity that I've bought this CD. It's a fine recording that takes you to a typical, cosy family reunion. The male voices are not impressive and I wouldn't include the flute solos in the CD. But the final result is very pleasant, excellent to listen in the car while you're driving in the countryside (before lunch, of course).
The original sound of their music. .......2006-01-15
The original von Trapp Family's twenty years of touring and performing internationally had finished, and Maria Augusta von Trapp had written their story in three books and begun several decades of missionary work in New Guinea by the time "The Sound of Music" hit Broadway, and Julie Andrews later sang about her favorite things in a top-earning film. I don't know if the original von Trapp Family benefitted from show and film royalties; they certainly deserved to, for they worked very hard perfecting, under their conductor Dr Franz Wasner, their natural ensemble and music-making talents.
The results may be heard in this first-class CD reissue of recordings they made in New York in 1952 and 1956. The family amassed a large repertoire, collecting items while touring, for example "Waltzing Mathilda" from Australia. The selection here includes a cross-section (loosely titled "Folk Songs") and some of their instrumental items involving recorders, cello and harpsichord. Perhaps the items from their rich Austrian culture are the most satisfying.
This is the second DGG CD release of their recordings. Duration 52 minutes. I recall from my LP collecting days, that there are enough Trapp Family recordings to fill a third CD. I look forward to it.

An assembly of jewels!.......2004-02-12
The era of the real La Stupenda, Adelina Patti. Around the queen of song we can hear such titans as Calve, Nordica and de Lucia. Just to pick the GREATEST highlights:
Emma Calve's SUPERB Habanera. (Carmen) Being lauded as the greatest Carmen who ever trod the stage Calve dazzles with flawless French, passionate phrasing and subtle style!
Fernando de Lucia's stylistic recording of "Il sogno" (Manon). A lesson for stylistic, graceful singing!
Ophelia's aria by probably the greatest Ophelia ever: The flawless Nellie Melba. Still one of the greatest recordings!
Marcella Sembrich's gorgeous singing in "Qui la voce sua suave". This is what I call STUPENDOUS!
And these are just the crown-jewels! No opera-collection is complete without this historical gem!

A whisper from the past.......2003-09-17
I had read about Adelina Patti for years, then one year I was able to find a record set of 2 records containing her recordings. I listened to it with much interest. Out of the mist and dark, the crackles and spits, came forth a wonderful voice beautifully produced even if past its prime. The portamento style was completely strange to me, and at first it sort of sounded sloppy, but on repeated listening, I learned to accept its stylistic relevance.
Well, now those same recordings (even if not quite complete as the former set I had) are out there to listen to again. The remastering is a revelation. Yes, there is surface noise, so those who can't hear past that, I would NOT recommend you buy this recording. You are NOT going to hear any flights of coloratura to take your breath away (such singing Adelina was noted for, and did well); remember, the woman was OLD when these recordings were made, and had been retired a while. Yet, even making them thrilled her, for at first hearing she screamed out "Now I know why I am Patti."
Patti was of a long ago generation that now is nothing more than a mention in the ancient history books. However, she was one singer who not only reflected the tastes of her time, but actually knew most of the composers of the music she sang. When listening to this set, one wonders, "Was that how Gounod taught her to sing the role?" The composers she sang approved of the portamento, the extremely smooth legato, and the mellow quality of her voice. We can never know for sure, but we are led to wonder just what in her singing style is a reflection of the composer's intent.
Even with age, and with a less than perfect support, Patti is able to captivate us with her charm, her personality, and yes, her singing. People have commented on how she sounds more mezzo than soprano, and that is a reflection of the way singers sang at that time. Voices were trained with a strong full lower and middle register; high notes as we are used to hearing them were not considered appealing, though at the time of these recordings they were becoming more and more acceptable. High notes were not necessarily weak, but the volume we associate with them today simply was seen as tasteless. The voice was full at the bottom, and gradually lightened, yet still very penitrating. Thus, the rich sound we hear in Patti's singing (for alas, we hear no high notes at all) was probably the natural heart of her voice throughout her career. The caressing sweet high notes she was praised for would most likely have had that same richness along with a more brilliant focus.
This is all technical, and maybe not too interesting, but it helps the buyer have an idea of what they are going to listen to. One thing I have to comment on, and that is Patti's trill. In all recording I doubt there has been a more beautiful trill recorded. It is even, warm, and so perfect. Sutherland's comes close in mellow beauty, but most sopranos, though perfectly executed, seem to have none of Patti's warmth in their trills (Melba's was technically perfect, but compared to Patti is cold and lifeless). Even Ponselle's, in all its stunning volume and briliance, has nothing on Patti.
This is not a recording for everyone, and to some hearing things like "Old folks at home" may see like a cheap shot considering Patti's greatness in an era of super great singers. Again, the woman was old, and she recorded what she could (and even a few things she couldn't do) and left us with a glimpse, even if ever so clouded, of the wonderful joys of singing audiences of the past basked in regularly.
Hers is a voice in its final bloom.......2003-08-17
I heard that Adelina Patti's voice was a delight to hear. If only the gramphone would have been invented earlier than 1888 so I could have heard her voice in its prime. The charm and fullness of her vocal technique seems to have survived alright into the time of the recording, though she sounds more mezzo than soprano. She tends to slide a bit in Lotti's "Pur de cesti". The Mozart aria "Voi che sapete" had a little too much pace in the "Sospiro gemo" part, which kind of threw her off count. But I give her credit for the work she did in recording these songs. They can also paint pictures of Victorian and Romantic delights and transport the listener to the garden of past singers where Patti's voice was in its final flowing.

The singing is excellent, and some of the pieces are quite good, but after a while you get tired of this genre.
