Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

This is both an unusual and magnificent recording by the great guitarist John Williams. What makes this disc so unusual is that Williams chose to have himself accompanied by a second guitar, two marimbas, and bass. It all makes for a wonderful and joyous sound. Highly recommended.

My four-year-old son loves this CD and frequently asks to hear "Moonlight Sonata" at bedtime. I'm happy that he is starting to appreciate classical music at an early age.

Sleep at last!.......2001-02-01

I am one those people that cannot sleep when I'm travelling. Even at home in my own bed it takes me a while to relax enough to fall asleep. I heard this CD when I was visiting my sister. She had the CD in the guest room and not knowing what was loaded, I just turned on the player hoping to find relaxing music. I was lucky because the CD player was loaded with several CDs that my sister used to help her child to fall back asleep when he wakes up in the night. It was great because I remember hearing just a portion of the CD when I woke up the next morning. I guess the CDs did the job. I listened to this CD along with Baby Bach and other similar CDs during my entire visit. I had no problem with falling asleep each night while I was there. I liked it so much that I'm purchasing all the CDs that she had for myself. I look forward to receiving my purchase so that I can relax and quickly fall asleep as I did during my visit to my sister. I highly recommend this as a must have for your collection even if you do not have children. My sister used it for her new born and said that it help him to quickly fall back to sleep. I feel that if it can work on me, it would help anyone to relax.

Louis Glass (1864-1936) was born in Copenhagen a year before his compatriot Carl Nielsen, but his music is much older-sounding that Nielsen's, largely because he was initially a follower of the style of the notably conservative Niels Gade, a composer who was the leader of the previous generation of Danish composers. The son of a piano professor, Glass reached professional levels in both his piano and cello playing and indeed made his solo début playing each of those instruments. He was a leading pedagogue in Denmark at the end of the 19th century and up to his death in the 1930s. He was later influenced by the music of Franck and Bruckner. He is primarily remembered for his symphonies. Here we have his two most important chamber pieces, a string sextet and a piano quintet, played by Danish musicians.

The String Sextet in G Major, Op. 15, is a four-movement work (fast-slow-fast-fast) notable for its square thematic material, often repeated in sequences, and its insistent, if sometimes awkward, rhythmic figures. Although written in the early 1890s, harmonically it sounds as if it could have been written thirty years earlier. There is some influence of Bruckner in the block construction. Aside from a harmonically interesting trio section in the scherzo and the neat formal construction, this is not a terribly memorable work. The string sextet, Copenhagen Classic, plays with ardor that sometimes approaches harshness.

In the Piano Quintet in C Major, Op. 22, Copenhagen Classic are joined by pianist Christina Bjoerkoe. The instrumentation is that of the Schumann Piano Quintet. Written 5-6 years after the Sextet, the Piano Quintet was dedicated to the Swedish composer and violinist Tor Aulin whose Aulin String Quartet (with composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano) premièred the work in 1897. Possibly because Glass was himself a fine pianist as well as a string player, the work blends the sounds of strings and piano expertly. But in a number of passages the work almost sounds like a piano concerto with string accompaniment. This allows Glass to vary his means of construction and in the event the Quintet is an altogether more impressive piece than the Sextet. The work opens with a striking ceremonial fanfare-like passage whose rhythm recurs throughout. There are Schumannesque passages that feature the 'Legendton' sound so frequent in Schumann's piano music; one hears the similarity of that sound to the organ-influenced string writing deriving from Bruckner and this makes for a satisfying stylistic synthesis. It may be simply because I preferred the Quintet, but it sounds as if the instrumentalists are more convinced by the quality of the Quintet than the Sextet. Whatever the reason, this is a successful performance of a worthy late Romantic chamber work.
