The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

Arthur Fiedler made listening to classical music fun. Try a listen to 'Pomp and Circumstance', one of my favourite pieces of classical music. 'William Tell Overture' shines as does most of the material on this album. Well recorded for it's day. Fiedler is missed.

I had the opportunity of playing in an orchestra under Maestro Fiedler. He was a tough, no nonsense conductor who expected crisp, lyrical, and expressive. His musical interpretations of everything from Sabre Dance to Syncopated Clock; from Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 to his love for the Beatles, sets him as the ruler supreme in pop music. I only hope RCA will continue to reissue his LPs so a new generation knows the man and his music. Bravo!

I bought this CD a little over a year ago and it is still among my favorites. "Polvetsian Dances" is excellent no matter what your interests. The full version of "Pomp and Circumstance" as well as "The William Tell Overature" are wonderful; The "Procession of the Nobles" is victorious and galliant; the lyrical complexity of "Farandole" is haunting. This is a brilliant compilation of musical excellence.

It is only natural that players of instruments with a limited repertoire should resort to transcriptions, citing a long line of arrangers from Bach to Liszt to Heifetz. However, the suitability of the material is as important as the skill of the transcriber, and you don't have to be a "purist" to object to some of Balsom's choices. Some of the transcriptions are her own, some are by Julian Milone, a violinist, who also provided the orchestrations of the non-orchestral accompaniments. Unfortunately they sound unnatural compared to Mozart's, in an aria from his Die Zauberflöte, and Bach's, in a movement of his A minor Violin Concerto. Two numbers are for trumpet alone: Paganini's 24th Caprice for violin, which keeps jumping from the highest to the lowest register, bringing out the worst of both, and Debussy's "Syrinx" for flute, which loses its languid character. The "Turkish Rondo" from Mozart's A major Piano Sonata is least satisfying: played in E-flat minor (instead of A minor), it sounds strident, and its breakneck pace destroys the original's grace and buoyancy. The arrangement often gives the melody to the orchestra and un-Mozartian virtuosic interjections to the trumpet. De Falla's Seven Popular Spanish Songs, orchestrated by Luciano Berio complete with castanets, come off better, and not surprisingly, two pieces by trumpet players are most successful: Jean-Baptiste Arban's Variations on Bellini's "Casta Diva," and the Nocturne from Henri Tomasi's Trumpet Concerto. Slow, dreamy and impressionistic, the Concerto is the only "original" piece on the program, and the listener wishes the disc had included all of it. On this record, the playing's the thing. Alison Balsom is a stunning virtuoso; she commands a huge register, a large range of dynamics and colors, and can achieve hair-raising speeds with ease and clarity. A view which praises with-faint-damn - is too reminiscent of days in academia, and causes me to compose my first Amazon comment. On to Ms. Balsom (from a one who won a 'Silver Bugle(tm)' at a military academy / 8th grade (!) and went on with cornet/trumpet, for many decades since.)

I have heard Nakariakov live, met the miraculous man - he is my Trumpet-God! (among demi-Gods like, newly: Ms. Balsom.) But *critical* comparison of 'technique?' is utterly inappropriate, once within or beyond that sublime level of virtuosity which includes Wynton M., earlier - Gerard Schwartz and.. the precious few.

If you love music, especially brass / are still susceptible of wonderful Goose-bumps: you will not be disappointed in the divine Alison and 'Caprice'. IMHO Her pianissimo in *all* registers is second to none, her intonation flawless and her playing: Sublimely musical, in all senses of that vague but large word. Note that most selections are played on a C trumpet (same key as piano) - a bit different effect from B-flat, for those afflicted with perfect pitch.

Bon appetit - be grateful that, amidst the external absurdities of this particular time - Love expressed in sound remains amongst us. And we can afford, ene, to "buy it"! Sorta

Alison Balsom demonstrates brilliant technique and feel throughout this albumn with a choice of contrasting pieces painting a picture of a mature performer with incredible talent. Highly recommended for the trumpet solo and concert trumpet enthusiast.... you reach the end wanting more!!

Alison Balsom...I first heard of her when I saw her Caprice video on youtube. I must say, this is some good talent and she certainly brings justice to the trumpet. However, I think that her interpretations are not yet musical enough. She has great dynamics and is able to change her tone a bit but...even though she is able to employ all those technical displays, the musicality seems to be lacking. Even though I hate to compare trumpeters, I believe that she is trying to achieve a style that is similar to Sergei Nakariakov (that is...playing transcriptions which are technically demanding). Unfortunately, her technicality is nowhere near the level of Nakariakov and her musical interpretations still need work. Her style, however, does bear the shadow of her teacher, Hakan Hardenberger. That is to say, she has a clear and open tone.

So...all in all...I think her musicality is lacking...for now.

Extremely talented performer playing some really great selections. I especially loved Der Holle Rache and Rondo a la Turca. There is also some modern stuff that is skillfully done, but not really my taste.

I own multiple recordings of most of the works on Georg Solti's Thunder & Lightning, but I always hold this collection as my reference. Not only with his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but several other world class ensembles, the Maestro shows his monumental interperative talents to make old warhorses sound as if we've never heard them before. He could inspire an orchestra to "open the heavens or open a flower" with his baton. His presence is missed, but his work is forever.

If you wish to relax using this CD set after work, you are buying the wrong album. But, if you MUST drive between one and six in the morning, this set, by repeating all just once, can keep you awake on the road, however boring it is. Trust me, TRUST SOLTI!

Solti shows here why he is one of the best interpreters of classical music. while conducting Wagner is his best work, here he shows that he can interpret well just about any composer. also, in this 2-disc set, there is a nice wide range of music, so for those who are just getting into classical music, this is a good place to start.

Richard Wagner's third opera, Rienzi, der Letzte Tribun, was never given complete in the composer's lifetime. Even the overture has three sections that never made it into print. This performance includes the first of those cuts, and absolutely everything else from the rise of the curtain on. That's why it is 4 cds at a more than reasonable price.
Past recordings have either been composites of two or more performances or the EMI recording. There aren't others to choose from. EMI had Rene Kollo as Rienzi. He's in good form, as are all of the other singers (except Siv Wennberg, who tries but ultimately ends up painfully sliding through some high tessitura). The performance "sounds" good, but it is just too studio bound. Everyone was giving a good recital of what they had learned, but they don't have much of a clue as to what is going on dramatically. Hollreiser is the conductor of that, and it's on his shoulders that the problem lies. Everyone needed a stronger hand because the opera is, frankly, never given. The recording follows the Eulenberg score. That score may be long, but it has many cuts, and the recording made a couple of more besides.
That recording was already passe when it came out because this performance had already taken place. It includes so much more music! And it is delivered with so much more understanding and panache! John Mitchinson is incredible as Rienzi - and the role makes Siegfried look desirable. He is noble, angry, loving and, ultimately fatalistic. He is surrounded by singers who, if less well known than those on the EMI, have done their homework. They shape phrases to great effect and the whole builds to a great fifth act. Act one runs over an hour, act two just at 90 minutes, act three and four at 50 minutes each, and act five tags in at around 15 minutes. This is Wagner trying to outdo Meyerbeer. Heard cut, the opera does this in the most banal way. Heard uncut, as here, the opera unfolds with some indication of the powerful music Wagner would write soon - Flying Dutchman was next. All Wagner lovers should be standing in line for this one.

This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, is a master stroke of pure choral music. The piece is repetitive but Allegri builds up to a fantastic ending. Also of note is the glorious recording of Mozart's AVE VERUM CORPUS, Hadyn's DIE SCHOPFUNG, and Brahm's EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM. A MUST for any choral music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

So far this my favorite classical CD of the year. I never tire of listening to it (over and over on my iPod). It contains some really beautiful renditions of very moving classical pieces, both modern and ancient. All in all an emotional and dramatic presentation. The overall effect is relaxing but it will definitely never bore you!

As the other reviewer noted, I bought my copy of this after hearing someone else's and I had to have one of my own. A great gift, too. We gave this to people for Christmas one year with a couple of DVDs of the films (Prizzi's Honor among them). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE Opera C.D. for the Opera Illiterate!.......1999-04-19

If you only buy ONE opera C.D., this is it!!! A compillation of famous highlights from operas we all know we've heard before (but might not know where to find them again). Some of my favorites: #3Puccini's Turandot-"Nessun Dorma", #4 Delibes: Lakme-Viens Malika...Dome Epais, #5 Puccini's La Boheme-Quando M'en vo. All treasures.

Of course, there are a few selections that break the otherwise romantic, thought-provoking and quiet-whistful mood the rest of the C.D. creates: all selections that are symphony-only, such as #8 Wagner" Die Walkure - the thunder-crashing sound of the ride of the Valkyries, ever famous but disruptive.

In spite of the few objections, this is a C.D. well-worth having! (Everyone who's heard my copy buys one for themselves) Makes a GREAT gift, too.
