This mass, commissioned and performed by the superb 12-man American group Chanticleer, begins and ends with Plainsong, and is comprised of five movements by five different composers interspersed with shorter pieces by Carlo and Andrea Gabrieli and Carlo Gesualdo. Douglas J. Cuomo's Kyrie features the extreme ends of the men's vocal ranges and plays plainsong against tonal clusters; the Turkish composer Kamran Ince's Gloria is sung to a Sufi text and radiates peace; Shulamit Ran's Credo, in her native Hebrew and English, begins in a stunning martial outburst about the belief in one God and uses texts that relate to the Holocaust (occasionally spoken) to make her dramatic points; London-born Ivan Moody contributes a ravishing, medieval-tinged Sanctus, as ethereally lovely - and at points as stunningly wild - as his compositions for Trio Mediaeval; and the Irish composer Michael McGlynn's Agnus Dei begins as a solo in Gaelic, which is then underpinned with a drone in the darker voices and it ends, with grace, at a whisper. Perhaps the boldest music here is the Gesualdo, whose bizarre harmonies and discordances still can shock and awe, but the Chanticleer Mass, while not an overwhelming new work, is nonetheless, fascinating, and, as one might imagine, beautifully performed. --Robert Levine

After reading a positive article in the Wall Street Journal in May 2007 I was particularly interested in hearing this Mass, and didn't know Chanticleer had recorded it until a friend offered to lend me her brand-new copy after a three-for-two spending spree at the local brick&mortar bookstore.

This is an awesome recording, and I use this adjective without hesitation even though it's over-used and teen-speak. I'm surprised at the number of used copies available - perhaps buyers think that this is a warm & meditative piece and reject it when they discover it's not. It is most definitely not meditative - but it is instead a powerful discourse with God from Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions. The liturgical setting unites it with traditional Mass settings and the music and text raise 21st-century - but also eternal - questions of faith, doubts - and hope. Five stars - no hesitation.

Andrea and Giovanni.......2007-05-10

I can only say "ditto" to all the previous reviews. This recording has to be the best one of Andrea's works, which are all too rarely performed. Love the strong, low-register, at-times-blasting brass! Surely this is how the Gabrieli's intended the music. It makes the hair stand up on the back of one's neck! McCreesh's dynamic's instincts are spot-on and are a dramatic departure from his previous efforts. I cannot praise this CD enough.....

May i also add that it was awarded Record of the Year 1990 by ABC-FM Stereo
here in Australia and Gramophone (UK) 1990 Early Music Award.
I also suggest looking at abcshop dot com dot au for a superb selection of High quality classical music most of which is produced in Oz and not seen in huge quantities overseas. Amazon does have a few also. Type in ABC Classics
and browse through the selection.

Venetian Coronation CD.......2007-01-09

The item arrived in a good time and was well packed and in excellent condition. It was less than ordering it elsewhere. I learned of the music on PBS radio and was enchanted by it. Having a copy is a joy.

Wow! This is the best I've heard Gabrieli.......2005-01-19

The performance of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli is quite amazing. The acoustical effects of brass, organ and voices bouncing of the walls in natural stereophonic sound is really beyond description. A good mix of brass ensemble, vocals, organ and gregorian chant. I had not listened much to Andrea Gabrieli before I bought this CD and I have to admit that his contributions to this CD are very powerful.

The "omnes" at the end of the cd has extraordinary musical power. It builds to an amazing climax that has caused many a chill to go up my spine. On a personal note, I listened to this song on my way to see my alzheimer's stricken mother who had died just moments earlier. The finale to this CD represents the finale to my mother's life to me and will always be an important piece of music to my soul. I truly love this cd.

5 stars doesn't do this recording justice.......2004-12-28

There is little to say about this superlative recording that hasn't been said before. It represents the high point of the recording career of Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players. This recording happens to be one of the best recordings of the music of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli available.

If you only ever buy one recording of Gabrieli's music, make it this one. There are a few good recordings of Gabrieli's music but none are better that 'A Venetian Coronation'. The recording 'Venetian Church Music', by the Taverner Consort & Players, is similar in quality to 'A Venetian Coronation', only Andrew Parrott did not choose to present the music as a recreation of an event.

The cornetts, Baroque violins, Baroque trombones and organs are all played with great style and panache in this recording. The choir features men's voices - from soprano to bass, and the sound blends beautifully with the cornetts and sackbuts.

Listen to 'Deus qui beatum Marcum' and you'll buy this recording.

This recording was a miracle and a wonder in its time and it is still the most impressive recording of its kind.

My best baroque CD.......2004-08-29

Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of them) of baroque music for brass is surprising and fascinating me with every 'song', showing facetes and diversity I always missed on my other records. Finally nothing is like the original PJ!

Après nous avoir fait plaisir avec le Greatest Hits, voici un double CD qui nous enchante avec les principales pièces de la Renaissance du sublime Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Il y a longtemps que nous attendions la mise en CD de ces oeuvres, et nous voila comblé. Pour plusieurs pièces, c'est Elgar Howarth qui les a arrangé. Un grand moment de musique pour cuivres avec de grands compositeurs, délicieusement arrangées.
Pour éléver encore plus ces 2 cds, saluons encore la présence du London Festival Brass Ensemble dirigé par Elgar Howarth (dont la plus part des membres sont du PJBE), alors quoi de plus normal d'avoir inclu leur préstation.

An amazing collection, as expected........2006-06-09

I stumbled across Chanticleer in late 2005, while running a search for chorale music -- the album I found being Gregorian Chants -- and instantly fell in love with this wonderful group. I had known about countertenors for some time previously, but, as I had not yet witnessed the sound, was stunned to find that Chanticleer was composed entirely of males.

Their sound is wonderful; rarely do I catch them slipping in their harmonies, a quality that I primarily associate with Russian Orthodox Choirs, which I don't find often enough within the US-of-A. But being a stickler isn't bad; it's this way that I found, and stuck with Chanti.

The selections of music on this CD are wide, ranging from American Folk -- Shenandoah -- to Strauss' "Drei Männerchöre," and back to Irving Berlin and beyond. My personal favorite is the rendition of Allen Shearer's musical adaptation of "Nude Descending a Staircase," featuring X. J. Kennedy's text.

As a final note: for lovers of a good bass in choral music, this is certainly a CD to consider, as are all Chanticleer works, thanks to Mr. Eric Alatorre, facial ornamentation and all. He's certainly a warm, rich anchor for the group's sometimes ethereal sound.

The last work on this recording, "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well, is worth many times the price of this CD. Joseph Jennings' performance on this one riveting and the group really takes off. The entire album is great, but this piece is an absolute knockout.

A No Brainer!!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-26

This is a must have cd for any classical, choral,or jazz music fan. Chanticleer is world renowned for their abilty to branch out and do all kinds of different styles, and this cd shows off there incredible range and diveristy. This cd incompasses 20th Century classical, Rennisance, Romantic, Jazz, Spirital, and Folk music done with blend balance and style that each one of these genres calls for. It can take years for a group to do one off these genres well, let alone all. If you have never heard them this a a good cd to start with, and if you have heard them this is a great cd to add to your collection

A True Sampler.......2003-08-29

The purpose of a sampler is to showcase a variety of one's best work, and Chanticleer certainly does that on this disc. The Gabrieli Magnificat captures the spirit of San Marco, Venice, and then jazz and pop numbers are hilarious! A lesser known treasure is "I have had singing". "Jesus met the woman at the well"...as my grandfather used to say, "If that don't light your fire, your wood's wet."

No matter what your musical tastes are, you will enjoy this CD. Chanticleer sings songs with such a beauty and clarity, it makes one want to take up singing. I highly recommend all of Chanticleer's material.

The Venetians have always had a genius for celebration. Take, for example, Ascension Day: what began as a simple gathering of sailors to pray for St. Nicholas's protection became by the 16th century an opulent procession of barges across the Lagoon, a ceremony where the Doge (and Venice) ceremonially married the sea "as a sign of perpetual dominion" over it, and a sumptuous High Mass. Robert King has assembled (on a two-CDs-for-one set) an assortment of music for this occasion. Disc One, the Procession to the Lagoon, has an extraordinary variety of secular pieces: drum tattoos and trumpet fanfares; elegant instrumental works; grand multiple-choir madrigals; delicate pieces for three lutes; even Venetian church bells. The second disc (music from the Mass) has similar instrumental music and sprightly organ pieces mixed with impressive Mass movements for choir, soloists, and brass by the Gabrielis. Now this is a very worthwhile release, and the King's Consort performs very capably, every note in place--what's missing is a sense of excitement and festivity, the energy that Paul McCreesh would bring to such an occasion. First recordings of some of this music.......2002-08-17

This recording is very impressive. It features a range of sacred and secular vocal and instrumental music by the Gabrielis and their contemporaries. The music is well sung and well played and the whole experience is very impressive. I do agree that Paul McCreesh often does this kind of 'reconstructed event' in music a little better but this is a fine effort.
There are some fabulous pieces here that are rarely recorded and I suspect that some of these works have received their recording debut here.
The vast madrigal by Giovani Gabrieli - 'Udite, chiari e generosi figli' and Andrea Gabrieli's polychoral madrigals 'Cantiam de Dio' and 'Vieni, vieni Himeneo' are beautifully performed here and I know of no other recordings of these works.
The Canzon per otto tromboni by Tiburtio Massaino is a deep and dark piece and suggests that this composer deserves further exploration.
A couple of minor criticisms - the madrigal Lieto Godea is taken at a snail's pace and it is hard to believe listening to this performance that this piece inspired so many composers! Also, the performance of the Sonata XX à 22 is a all right but the recording made by the Taverner Consort & Players under the direction of Andrew Parrott is vastly superior.

Overall, a very entertaining CD with a couple of interpretations that did not impress me very much. Buy with confidence!

Makes me wish I could play the sackbut..........1999-09-08

I have a lot of CD's with Renaissance/Gabrieli music, so I have become rather hypercritical and I didn't dare to expect too much. But thanks to Robert King both 'uncle' Andrea and 'nephew' Giovanni again have moved me deeply (for those who understand Portuguese: saudade...). No CD or book is a 'must', but this performance makes me wish I could play the sackbut (at all/this well).

Two of the most amazing brass quintets in one........2004-07-12

This is by far the best fusion of two great brass sections ever recorded. This collection of 10-peice brass ensemble transcriptions combine the Canadian Brass and the brass section of the Berlin Philharmonic back in the eighties. Even if you're not crazy about Baroque/Renaissance counterpoint-style polychoral works, you wont even be thinking about the era the music is from. The Gabrielli selections demonstrate amazing interpretation, and the Albinoni Adagio is absolutely beautiful. The Pachelbel Cannon is the first track on the cd....and its the only arrangement of the cannon that I can still listen to. As overdone as the Cannon is today....(I saw a cd somewhere recently called "surfin' pachelbel" which really disturbed me....the cannon is so cheapened by people that think they can make money off of it)....this track will remind you how unique and beautiful it was originally intended to be. And Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is incredible... another seemingly cheapened composition is brought back to life in its original gorgeousness. The entire collection is relaxing and the musicianship is not to be compared with any other double brass quintet. You will not be disappointed.

Although instrumentation seems good, it is a pity that Savall hardly uses varied percussion. This is DANCE music. This makes me go back to the 1960s' Ulsamer's versions, full of imaginative contrasts and dynamism and enthusiasm
