Great pieces of (mostly modern but nevertheless extremely accessible) classical music, wonderfully performed by the DWS and Fennell, and moreover, fabulously recorded and produced by Professor Johnson for Reference Recordings. Dynamic range, detail, and presence of the highest degree; as a consequence, my inner geek always chooses Trittico when it comes to checking out new hi-fi gizmos. Thoroughly recommended: turn it up to 11.

5 out of 5 stars Makes me remember why I was almost a music major!.......2004-08-29

I really had to scour the internet to find and buy this cd! Why would I do such a thing? One day while driving in my car, I heard "Incantation and Dance" by John Barnes Chance playing on NPR and those wonderful memories of my freshman year of college came flooding back! The Chance piece is such a joyous and intricate exploration of the beautiful sounds that can be created when an ensemble of talented musicians, a great director, and a truly original piece of music are joined as one. I bought the cd specifically for this piece, but I also remember performing "American Overture" by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins while studying trumpet performance at Truman State University, a small liberal arts college in northeast Missouri.

Ok, so I gave up the dream of a career as a professional musician, but I will never forget that feeling of chills running up my spine while playing my trumpet on a lush piece like that one.

I'll bet if you were ever a band member in high school or college, this cd will bring back some good memories. Orchestral music is wonderful, but there is nothing like a big brass section and lots of percussion to make your heart race and your spirits soar!

I had never heard "Scenes from the Louvre" before, and it was quite a pleasant surprise.

Dello Joio's music isn't that common, or maybe better to say not commonly found... so when a new work pops up I usually try to at least audition it. I wasn't disappointed at all.

By closing one's eyes, you can almost visualize walking through the different galleries - Dello Joio paints with music as well as any of the masters painted with oil! Bravo!

The rest of the CD is fine, but "Scenes from the Louvre" is the shining star. I only wish I had been able to see the television production that this was written for.

Being a huge Dello Joio fan, I would appreciate being steered in the right direction for more of his music, especially anything that was written for, or has been transcribed for the Wind Symphony medium.

Norman Dello Joio was a man who stuck to his compositional guns and never succumbed to what Paul Creston thought of as the "disturbing trends" of the 20th century. You won't find dark, illogical, unmelodic music from Dello Joio. Rather, you'll hear some wonderfully crafted, simply beautiful music with an emphasis on rich melodic content. Perhaps his finest works are those he wrote for the legendary Martha Graham, as stated in the fine liner notes. All of them have formal orchestral titles that have been renamed for the Martha Graham Company. His "Triumph of Saint Joan" symphony, for example, was renamed "Seraphic Dialogue." If you enjoy the sound of a good chamber orchestra, the Atlantic Sinfonietta delivers with a tremendous blend of strings and just the right amount of interplay with the wind instruments. Should you like a full orchestral version of "Triumph," you can consider a recording James Sedares did with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. But after hearing it performed by this class group of chamber musicians, it needn't be necessary. A tremendous disc of underrated music.

    I'm sorry.. but I have to chuckle after reading these reviews. Serious trumpet players know David Hickman and his capabilities on the instrument, and, to be blunt, any comments that suggest that Hickman is "all technique" would be simply laughed at. He is a world-renowned performer and teacher who has done groundbreaking work with the Summit Brass and St. Louis Brass Quintet, not to mention on his numerous solo albums. Also, I suggest you look at the roster of his students at Arizona State University and write down some of the names. You'll see them again when they are successful orchestral players, chamber musicians, or solo artists.

    Attacking the quality of Hickman's tone is pretty silly, anyway. If you've ever recorded an instrumental performance before, you know what I mean. Microphone placement and the acoustic quality of the venue (and many other things) make huge differences in how the recording will sound. It's not a good sound/bad sound issue; everyone's sound is different. Additionally, sound engineering technology today can make an 6th grader who started playing trumpet yesterday sound like Wynton Marsalis.

    I apologize for not really reviewing the album (which is fantastic) here. Trumpeters, brass players, and all musicians would be doing themselves a favor to listen carefully to this album. Some fabulous and important trumpet repertoire being performed by world-class musicians.

    2 out of 5 stars Good Technique, Tone needs some work.......2005-10-21

    For all trumpet players, we all know that tone production is what we always strive for. Producing an amazing tone...that is a great accomplishment.

    Hickman obviously is a good trumpet player but I don't think he's anywhere near the top trumpet players. His tone is very heavy, and loses liveliness. When you hear him playing the 16ths and 32nds, his tone seems to turn a bit feeble and the sound IS NOT CONCENTRATED....each note is not clear enough

    If you want to know what I mean, listen to Hakan Hardenberger. He has got a very focused tone and a beautiful tone at that.

    Also, Maurice Andre has incredible tone and technique, but a different style from Hardenberger. Andre's playing may sound different too since he prefers to use French trumpets.

    Serious high school and college trumpet players will be well served by owning this album. It contains several pieces with which you will spend a great deal of time during your studies, and gives you a clear, precise, and very musical account of them. The Kennan, Stevens, and Dello Joio are probably the most often performed works, but the other works on this album make a strong case for more inclusion on recitals as well.

    David Hickman is an excellent player who makes every phrase and articulation clear to the listener. I don't advocate trying to make one's performane a carbon copy of Hickman's, but this CD is an excellent model from which to work, and the number of pieces contained on the album make it a good buy for anyone who is interested, and particularly those who plan to study seriously, the trumpet.

      Dello Joio's The Triumph of Saint Joan (a symphony in three movements) originally started out as an opera in 1950, but the composer withdrew it. He turned it into a compact, coherent three-movement symphony that is stunning in its composure and lucidity of argument. It is quite beautiful. His Variations, Chaconne and Finale (1949) is based on a Gregorian theme derived from the Kyrie of the Mass of Angels but characterized as symphonic dances (its original title was Three Symphonic Dances). The Barber that follows--the famous Adagio for Strings--though done well seems to be tacked on as a marketing gesture. --Paul Cook
