4 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-04-07

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I have performed this piece myself and listened to many other recordings, and this is truly the best one I've heard yet. The only problem I have is with the sound of the sopranos in the Sanctus movement. Other than that, a true masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best performance.......2006-12-17

Faure's Requiem is one of my favorite pieces. I have several different versions of it on CD and have even performed it myself with choir and orchestra (I am a tenor).
Based on the excellent reviews I went ahead and purchased this version and I am listening to it as I write this review.
This is definitely the clearest and cleanest performance of this requiem I have heard yet. I enthusiastically recommend it.
If you like Faure, also try Pelleas & Melisande. The Deutsche Grammophon version with Seiji Ozawa is very good. I had lost my tape and decided to purchase the CD recently. It comes with one of the best chorus versions of the Pavane (the one on this Requiem CD is very good but instrumental only).

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2006-10-11

I have been sampling other performances of the beautiful, moving Requiem, but there simply is no other as pure, and perfectly balanced -- the sorrow and darkness of grief is here, but unlike other requiems, in a way that touches the heart gently, lightly, and soothes the pain of loss. When you hear this recording, you somehow know that death is not the end.

5 out of 5 stars VERY BEST VERSION.......2005-12-01

I have an old Seraphim LP record - undated with no Copywrite or "P". I was ready to bring it to some very expensive Reproduction place to convert it to Digital for me, because I have bought many CD's of this piece that cannot come anywhere near the "majesty" of this version.

I once lent an audio tape I made of this record to a friend, and after a week he ask me, "how can you stand to part with it, even for a day?"

This is the very best rendition of Faure's Requiem I have every heard.

This is the one to own.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choral CD.......2006-02-28

This CD cpatures the BYU choir sound and every song is powerful. My favorite are "The Five Hebrew Love Songs" as well as an excellent arrangement of "Be Still My Soul". The choir then sings "God So Loved the World" which is a stellar and beautiful arrangement from Chilcott. Is a must have for anyone who enjoys listening to choral music.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!!!.......2005-02-12

I own several other King's Singer CDs, but this one is definitely my favorite. Every track is a gem! It is amazing that only six vocalists are able to produce such beautiful harmonies. My favorite tracks are:
-"Te Lucis Ante Terminum (I)" This begins with Gregorian chant done in the way that God intended for it to be sung. When I am listening to this, I imagine it being performed in an English cathedral, and I imagine the entire building resonating with the music. After the opening unison Gregorian chant, the music changes into a polyphonic and harmonic style that is a very interesting textural contrast. Wonderful!
-"The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah" This is a wonderful example of the highest form of English polyphony. I have a CD that has the Choir of King's College performing the "Lamentations", however, the King's Singers' version on this CD is much clearer and richer.

If you like this type of music, then this album is for you. Even if you are not sure if you like this kind of music, I would still recommend purchasing this recording. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!.......2002-01-22

This CD is absolutely essential. These guys know their music inside and out, and the dynamic levels they are able to achieve should be the envy of any ensemble.

The album contains an exceptional recording of Tallis's "The Lamentations of Jeremiah" which are virtually unperformed in the music world, but are exquisite pieces of vocal polyphony. I highly recommend this album for that reason alone.

Listen to it as an activity in and of itself, with no background noise if possible. You will be rewarded! Also, it is a great album to help you fall asleep, if you use music to relax.

If you like Early music, you MUST acquire this CD! End of story!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Flawless.......2000-12-08

The King's Singers are one of the best small vocal ensembles in the world today. With beautiful, strong, clear voices, they sing new life into some of the loveliest melodies of the two wonderful English composers. Their voices seem perfectly suited to this music, and indeed their performance itself is essentially perfect--I cannot find a single significant fault with anything on this recording. The quality of singing is absolutely first-rate. In particular, the sound of the male contralto is wonderfully pure. If you like Byrd and Tallis, then you are in for a wonderful treat with a purchase of this CD. If you are not very familiar with the composers, or the Singers, then I am sure this CD will make you quite a fan of both! This is very, very lovely music.

5 out of 5 stars The King's Singers Overcome Obsticles of Byrd and Tallis.......2000-06-10

William Byrd. Thomas Tallis. Both were common copmosers in the Renaissance era that were sure to offer up a challenge to anyone who dared. The King's Singers were up there to challenge the music of Byrd and Tallis. What an interesting choice of composers too. Byrd was known to be the most respected composer of his time in England (1543-1623), which may also be the reason he got away with composing music for both the banned Catholic church and the new Angelican church.

I honetly do not know much about Tallis, but I think that "Te Lucias ante Termnium I" shows well defined and blended harmonies while focusing on an excellent bass line. "Haec Dies" sounded like two different SATB choirs copying each other while actually the music is only SSATTB; they made a masterpiece out of a song that only consists of: 'Haec dies, quam fecit Dominus, Exultemus, et laetemur, inea, Alleluia'. The melodies were bouncy and fizzed with intense pop and curiosity to what was coming up, how the style format was going to suprise you next. "Beata Viscera Maria Virgins" demonstrated brilliant sections as well as dramatic dynamics. "Ave Verum Corpus" drifted me into a daze with beautiful melody lines to relax to. "Viqilate" created a sea of harmonies using the basic lyric line while brilliantly intensifying with each word.

The King's Singers have once again proved they are serious singers by tackling a new challenge: music that invloes dramatic dynamics and does not always have smooth transitions. Not only did they manage to pull it off, they also perfected the music and performed it with such eloquency it almost sounds easy. Almost. I have personally performed some music composed by William Byrd, and it is not easy. That is all part of brilliance. '-English Renaissance' has definitly proved that the King's Singers can overcome obsticles with grace and purify the rest, such as "You Are the New Day", with their beautiful sound. This is one album that is worth the trouble to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc at UNBELIEVABLY GOOD Price!.......1998-12-16

Whether you are just beginning to gather a library and want some staples of the choral music world or have long loved the works on this disc, this cd is an indispensible part of a serious music lover's library. The remastering of these historically memorable performances is first rate. Both main works are done with the reverence to the score and the meaning behind the text that was such a hallmark of David Willcocks illustrious career.

I wish that Willcocks would live forever, but if trends tell us anything about the future, his extensive output will probably be re-issued some time after he takes his place with the heavenly choirs--and the price will probably not be so inviting. This disc is a gift at this price and it makes a great gift, too! As a choir director, I have often given it to friends and choir members. It has always been greatly appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal & poignant. The King's Singers in their element........1999-04-15

This CD presents the King's Singers performing the very emotionally poignant music of Des Prez. Minor keys prevail, and the Singers communicate the feelings of loss and longing excellently. In this CD the King's Singers demonstrate their technical mastery (with the exception of one noticible pitch problem early on the CD)of early music. They also seem to be more at home in this venue, where metric precision and open vowel production don't sound over-precise or soul-less. Renaissance music fans who may have been put off by the King's Singers' rehashing of popular songs should not miss this. The Singers are performing in their element.

I do agree that the name of the CD is really silly, and detracts from the overall quality of the work. The CD would better have been named for Jackson Berkey's composition, Native American Ambiances. It is a beautiful and usual work that is well worth hearing.

It seems a shame to use such a stupid title for a CD of great music recorded by a great ensemble. 'Tis a pitty to be silly.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-12-30

Another excellent recording from the versatile and virtuosic King's Singers. The theme of this CD is 20th century sacred music. The performances, as usual, are superb. The choice of pieces is very interesting. Some of these pieces were commissioned by the King's Singers themselves. This CD doesn't have the broad appeal of the King's more popular works or probably even of their fine recordings of early music but is very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars This will summarize all other reviews........2000-04-24

The King's Singers showcase their incredibly broad talent. But if you thought "Good Vibrations" was their best CD, beware; this is for head-banger King's Singers fans only. This will not be popular among pop music lovers---only artiste-types.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual and distinctive.......2000-02-27

I have heard a good many snippets of this unusual CD. One thing is clear- the King's Singers are not to sneered at: the range they cover given their limited size is almost frightening, particularly given the justice they can do to such weighty material as recorded here.

I am very familiar with the Tavener and Stravinsky on this disc, and it is a constant amazement that with just two counter-tenors against four lower voices, the group managed to achieve a mostly successful balance in them- especially in Tavener's "Funeral Ikos" to which they bring a remarkable shine. It is a pity they tackled the Gorecki "Totus Tuus"; they really could have done with augmentation (just as the Tallis Scholars were augmented to cover the forty parts needed in their recording of Tallis' motet "Spem in alium") and the work does lose something in being scaled down to six parts. That said, the group still manages to capture an intensity in the piece that listeners familiar with it will recognise. Meanwhile, the other works on this disc were written for the group, and in that respect they are easier to listen to. I have performed some Richard Rodney Bennett music in my time and find it to be on the approachable end of the modern music spectrum. He is a thoughtful composer and uses his forces well, as this recording shows.

Not the best showcase of the more familiar works perhaps, but undoubtedly a triumph for the King's Singers.

5 out of 5 stars impressive works, excellent performance quality.......1999-01-12

The King's Singers are well-known for the breadth of their repertoire - anything from pop classics to traditional Western folk songs to Renaissance madrigals. The album "Sermons and Devotions" demonstrates that they are willing to try on music that can be demanding for themselves as well as more challenging (well, somewhat) to listeners.

On the CD, they cover Stravinsky's "Pater noster" and "Ave Maria". Though I still prefer the latter as done by a mixed ensemble, they certainly do them both justice.

The album opens with Gorecki's "Totus tuus," perhaps a surprising choice for a small ensemble, because of the big sound the work demands.

The works which most caught my attention were the "Wymondham Chants" and the title work, "Sermons and Devotions". The former, by Geoffrey Poole, makes bold use of non-traditional vocal techniques, but conveys a very striking atmosphere: as the liner notes mention, it brings forth images of processions of monks, and of the abbey which inspired the composition.

"Sermons and Devotions" uses as its text the prose of John Donne, including the famous line, "Ask not for whom the bell doth toll; it tolls for thee..." Bennett's setting of these sermon texts heightens, in my opinion, the sense of the words' philosophical and religious weight. The final section of the work has the singers creating bell tolling effects by accenting and then holding certain pitches, making them sound like echoes.

Finally, very little can match the serene beauty of Taverner's "Funeral Ikos", based on the Greek Orthodox funeral service for a priest.

Overall, this cd might seem somewhat somber compared to others released by the King's Singers, e.g. their folk songs and madrigal albums. Nevertheless, I was impressed by the excellence of the music, all written in the twentieth century, and also by the vigor the group displays in the recording of it. (Two of the works on the cd were commissioned by the King's Singers).
