Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Essential recordings.......2007-04-06

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2006-12-14

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

5 out of 5 stars The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

A wonderful combination between the Great Bach and a master of Guitar

4 out of 5 stars heavenly music.......2006-07-10

I love this cd. The minute you put this music on you are transported to another world. It is very soothing and relaxing to listen to. Anyone who likes classical guitar should own this cd.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable box set.......2007-04-29

Chavez was definetely not really influenced by the "nationalist" school in music. On the contrary, his music is modern, dense, complex, often atonal, but ultimately worth listening to. I immediately liked the First symphony. It is sparse, but intense. The Second symphony is more easy to understand, and the use of folk-like material more obvious. The Third and Fourth are built on motifs, which are treated unequally, and are freely varied. They need to be listened to a number of times to be rewarding, although some listeners with a musical background may think otherwise. The remaining symphonies have a neo-clasical feel with a clearer couterpoint.
This is highly original music for the most part, and the only qualification I found is the playing of the LSO, while satisfying in ensemble, they seem less "free" than they could be in this music. For the price, this set is worth considering, especially for those who want to get off the beaten track.

3 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for Chavez fans, but what about the rest of us.......2006-07-13

In many ways, this is a very difficult set to review. Not knowing anything about this music, I purchased the symphonies of Carlos Chavez (1899-1978) out of curiosity. Many sources indicate that Silvestre Revueltas and Chavez were the two leading twentieth century Mexican composers. Despite the apparent importance of these two composers, recordings are relatively few (the music of Mexican composers seems to be somewhat of a dark territory, at least in comparison to other countries). In fact, (as of the date of this review) this is only the complete set of Chavez's symphonies available.

I wish I could say that these symphonies immediately won me over and should be played by every orchestra in North America. Unfortunately, even after repeated listening of these works, I am still a little perplexed by this complex music.

Despite composing a "Sinfonia India" (Symphony No. 2), based on actual Huichol and Yaqui Native American themes, Chavez should not be considered a nationalist composer. Chavez was a self taught modernist, although he independently studied the works of Beethoven and Brahms. His style is organic in nature and based on the use of recurring motives. Other than the above mentioned Symphony No. 2, his music is not immediately accessible. Dissonances are the norm here. Much of the compositional output of Chavez could be considered sparse in terms of melodic content, as well as orchestral texture. Although I indicated that Chavez should not be considered a nationalist composer, there are small, yet detectible, elements of folk / native music sprinkled throughout these pieces. The most striking element of this music to me is the characteristic writing for the woodwinds.

Here is a brief summary of the symphonies:

Symphony No. 1 - Sinfonia Antigona (12 minutes): A single movement work based on the Greek modal system

Symphony No. 2 - Sinfonia India (13 minutes): Chavez's most popular work. This single movement work uses actual Native American themes and percussion instruments. This is perhaps the only symphony which features a prominent part for the guiro.

Symphony No. 3 (31 minutes): The four movement symphony is most traditional of the set. I find the "Allegro" second movement to be somewhat gallant, and the quirky third movement scherzo to be interesting in a comical way. Despite the interesting inner movements, the terse outer movements of this work make it somewhat difficult to get a handle on.

Symphony No. 4 - Sinfonia Romantica (22 minutes): Another single movement work. The first half of the work is slow and murky, while the second half is lively and spirited. If it wasn't for the first half of this work, I think there could be some potential for the symphony to obtain more widespread popularity. The final section of this work features a rollicking syncopated melody, and is probably my favorite part within the six symphonies.

Symphony No. 5 (23:43): This symphony, scored for strings only, is neoclassical in nature. The string writing here reminds me a bit of Einar Englund's fourth symphony (Chavez's symphony came first though). The work concludes with a propulsive finale.

Symphony No. 6 (34:28): Concluding with a monumental passacaglia, some consider this to be Chavez's masterpiece. The passacaglia theme is initially presented by a tuba, which is followed by 34 (!) variations, then a set of two more variations within a fugal structure. The work concludes with a set of six more variations, followed by a coda in which Chavez, somehow, makes a C major chord sound ominous. All of this sounds interesting in theory, but the casual listener will definitely find himself or herself lost in Chavez's orchestral writing in this long (17 minute) movement.

So what does all this mean? Well, I liked the second symphony and I liked parts of the third and fourth at first listen. For these, I am glad I purchased this set. After repeated listening, some of the material in the fifth and sixth symphonies is yielding some pleasure. Additionally, this is an important release, given it represents the only complete set of Chavez's symphonies. And, how about that bargain price - it's tough to regret an eleven dollar purchase. Yet, in conclusion, I have come across so much fantastic music by virtually unknown composers, which is both immediately accessible and wholly characteristic, that this set in comparison, seems just a bit mediocre. For those new to Mexican classical music I would recommend starting with the less modern music of Revueltas ("less modern" is used in a relative sense here). For those who know and enjoy the style of Chavez, this set is wholly recommendable, given the price, the completeness, the detailed program notes, as well as the good playing by the LSO, although I am sure an orchestra which is more familiar with these works could add just a bit more excitement.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Symphonic Cycle by a Forgotten Composer.......2004-02-24

Chavez - Complete Symphonies

For years I was convinced that I knew exactly what the music of Carlos Chavez would sound like, without hearing a single note. To me it seemed obvious that any Mexican composer would automatically be a nationalist and base most of his music on the folk music of his country. That, plus Chavez's closeness to Copland in the 20s and 30s convinced me that his music would be a rather wan "Mexicana" copy of Copland's more successful Americana material. Then a few years ago I actually listened to the music of this composer and was completely blown away. Chavez was quite simply a brilliant modernist composer who just happened to be Mexican. And a more unjustly neglected composer is hard to imagine.

Chavez's six symphonies are a substantial addition to the form in modern times. They are diverse in form and mood and beautifully crafted. Though the composer was primarily self-taught, his command of modal counterpoint and 20th century harmony is impressive in the extreme. Each symphony is distinctive musical entity. The First and Second Symphonies are the shortest works, both in a single compact movement, but that's just about all they share. The First Symphony was developed from material that Chavez has written for a production of Antigone. This is the most uncompromisingly modernist music in the set. The piece is one slow movement, with material based on Greek modes accompanied by tense dissonances. It is austere, but powerfully tragic music. The Second Symphony couldn't be a greater contrast. The Symphony, called the Sinfonia India, is one of the best examples of Chavez's forays into musical nationalism. Based on mestizo music from Chavez's childhood as well as including a massive array of native percussion, this is one of the most impressive and accessible pieces in the composer's repertoire, the only work really that approaches a permanent place in the repertoire. The piece begins with a vibrant melody in wildly changing meters, contrasted with a lovely slower pentatonic melody. The piece has an austere middle section based on a haunting modal melody which climaxes and leads to a repeat of the opening material. Then, the final section of the work accelerates and introduces a new, rollicking theme, which is repeated almost verbatim over and over. The only changes are to the instrumentation, as more and more instruments and a greater battery of percussion drive the work to a rousing finale.

The third symphony is the first fairly traditional work in the cycle, written in three movements. The first is a typical sonata allegro with a jaunty main theme. The second is a charming scherzo and the final movement begins as a slow movement, but morphs into a faster finale as it goes. The work is beautifully crafted, as is the one movement 4th symphony, subtitled the Romantic Symphony. The Fifth symphony is almost neoclassical, and scored in two movements for strings alone. The Sixth symphony is also neoclassical, but with romantic overtones. It concludes with a stunning Passacaglia, perhaps the most effective since the Brahms 4th Symphony. It's a wonderful end to a truly impressive symphony cycle.

There is almost no competition for the Third, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies. The only other recordings are old vinyl releases with the composer conducting, and they have never made it to CD. The First, Second and Fourth symphony are presented on a competing disc conducted by Enrique Batiz and the State Symphony of Mexico. This latter disc also includes music from Chavez's ballet The Daughter of Colchis and the tone poem Baile, both wonderful works as well. The Second Symphony also appears on a wonderful disc of Latin American music by Leonard Bernstein in the best performance I've heard of the work. Between the Batiz disc and this one by Eduardo Mata the choice is harder. Batiz is a much less inspired conductor than Mata, but his orchestra plays with more color and fire than the LSO under Mata. On the other hand, this Vox set is the only way to get all six symphonies and it IS laughably cheap...you can buy it and still decide to get the Batiz CD later if you wish. Trust me...you'll want that one too, if only for the other Chavez material, because once you discover this unsung composer, I'm sure you'll be wanting more of his wonderful music. I know I do!

5 out of 5 stars Decent performances, really cheap price.......2001-02-13

Carlos Chavez wrote 6 wonderful symphonies which have struggled to hang on to the fringes of the repertoire. When conductor Mata recorded this set, it was only the second complete rendition of the pieces (after a gritty but imperfectly played set led by the conductor).

There has not been another complete set since Mata's so that and the cheap price are good reasons for getting this. The playing and performances are clean and colorful, but I have the feeling that the London orchestra was not completely comfortable with the idiom. There is a certain stiffness and control to their playing which stifles the music a bit. Still, this set warrants 5 stars because we aren't likely to get an new set any time soon.

A word about the music itself. Chavez explored Mexican (& Aztec) folk music and the results of that research inform his symphonies to varying extents. The Symphony No. 2 positively revels in the rhythms and sounds of the land, but the folk influence is much more subdued elsewhere.

Chavez knew the great 19th century symphonies and his carry on that tradition in a distinctive way. Thus, these pieces use older forms (including a Passacaglia to end the 6th symphony a la Brahms' 4th) and counterpoint abounds. However, Chavez's spare yet original orchestral palette (combining unlikely sonorities) and edgy (but not atonal) harmonic sense rewrite the romantic symphony in a new way. Don't expect the warm, lush sound of Brahms, even in Chavez's so-called Romantic symphony. Instead, expect pieces that meld colorfulness (but not impressionism) with a certain severity. It's an odd mix, but Chavez makes it work and it produces music that is very distinctive.

This is very high quality music and it should be in your collection. Still, I hope some enterprising young conductor will take up Chavez's cause soon and give us another cycle (along with recording of Chavez's various concerted works). He deserves to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2000-05-18

From start to finish these two CDs are simply incredible. Chavez' music is so complex, so emotionally intense that one must make a concerted effort to fully assimilate it. Yet it is work that is well rewarded. This is, simply put, some of the best 20th century orchestral music out there. I most wholeheartedly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Latin-American maestros at their very best.......1999-09-09

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

    5 out of 5 stars 6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

Maestro Lenny was at his best in this extroverted, highly rhythmic music. The Batuque by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez will be a discovery for most people, a tremendously exciting orchestral showpiece. There's lots more excitement in the pieces by Guarnieri, Revueltas (a stunning performance of the great Sensemayá), and two pieces by the tourist Aaron Copland. (This version of El Salón México is Bernstein's stereo recording; Sony has already reissued his earlier mono one.) The late Netania Davrath sings beautifully in the familiar Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Sony's remastering is really first- rate. But there should have been more than 53 minutes of music, even on this mid-priced reissue. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars An exotic delight.......2005-05-14

With the exception of the Copland pieces, these are the works of Latin American composers looking for--and finding--their own voice within the tradition of 20th century orchestral music. Four pieces are particularly noteworthy: the justly beloved Bachianas Brasileiras #5 (superbly sung by Natania Devrath), the propulsive Batuque, Sensemaya (a Mesoamerican "Rite of Spring"), and Chavez' "Sinfonia India." This last is not "misplaced geographically" (contrary to an earlier, otherwise helpful review); Chavez, writing in 1936, used the word "Indian" to refer to the native inhabitants of Mexico. He wrote that he and his colleagues in Mexico had to "free ourselves from the stuffy conservatory tradition, the worst kind of academic stagnation. We have found ourselves by going back to the cultural traditions of the Indian racial stock that still accounts for four-fifths of the people."

When I was a lad I went to a Young People's Concert in Manhattan. Bernstein trotted onto the podium and launched into Batuque, followed by many of the works on this disc. This recording was made right at that time of this concert and captures its joy, its sense of exploration, its energy.

4 out of 5 stars South of the Border, With Panache.......2002-01-11

        Jaunty. Fanciful. Riveting. Mysterious. Ominous.
There's a very wide range of emotions embodied in "Latin American Fiesta", a first-rate tribute to five Latino composers (and one Gringo) represented within this excellent collection. Bernstein and the Philharmonic really lay into the pieces that call for it, so much so that you may glance over your shoulder during "Sensemaya". "Batuque" is commanding; "Dansa brasileira", playful and way too short. The last work, "Sinfonia India", is misplaced geographically (not by the composer's ethnicity), but it's a highly evocative journey into the Subcontinent and a fitting capstone.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable musical excursion.

5 out of 5 stars my hero, Maestro Lenny.......2001-02-25

The re-mastering of this CD is amazing, and these recordings deserved the technical wizardry. It's the kind of music Leonard Bernstein was at his most incredibly brilliant at...rhythmic, emotional, and full of energy.

His interpretation of Copland has always been known as the "definitive" one, and in these two pieces, you can see why. The next three selections are by Brazilian composers, the most well known being Villa-Lobos' "Bachiana Brasileira # 5", here sung so beautifully by Netania Davrath.

Silvestre Revueltas' "Sensemayá" is fabulous. Reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in parts, though 100 % Mexican in feeling. It throbs with vitality, and the intensity of its rhythms is astounding...it's also a hard act to follow, which is Carlos Chavez' lot here with his beautiful "Sinfonia India". This piece may take a few hearings to fully appreciate, as there's a lot going on in it, like complex counterpoint, etc.

In my student years, I found a way (not telling how !) to hear the N.Y. Philharmonic rehearse, and would sit in total awe of Maestro Lenny...his genius and his humanity. He was my first hero, and though I never met him, my "father figure". This CD just exudes his presence...it's a special treat for anyone who ever saw him "make music" in person, and experienced the magic of it.

5 out of 5 stars Netania Davrath is the star of this release.......2001-01-25

In addition to the review mentioned above, the recording of the Bachianas is the star here. Soprano Netania Davrath recorded this right after a performance with Bernstein in New York during one of her tours. This recording pops up in many anthologies which is great as that way it can be shared with more music lovers. Davrath is best known for her complete recording of Songs of the Auvergne on Vanguard. Enjoy Davrath along with these fine works from composers from south of the border. You will be glad you did.

        Label: Scde
        ASIN: B00005MJTD

As many of the old Vox single CDs & boxes disappear or are reshuffled into deceptively "premium" packaging, this wonderful, celebratory collection remembers the glory years with a wide-ranging selection of great music, from the post-war mono recordings that, among other achievements, resuscitated Otto Klemperer's career & sent him on to settle some old scores, to pristine sessions from the Eighties engineered by the team of Marc Aubert & Joanna Nickrenz. Along the way there are some delightful surprises; pianists Novaes, Philipp, Haebler; Alfgren's lovely "Swedish Rhapsody" superbly played by the Baltimore Symphony as something more than a light classic; the under-rated Donald Johannos & Dallas Orchestra challenging Lenny Bernstein in 1967, the height of the Charles Ives revival, with a remarkable "Fourth of July;" Ravel's "Habanera" performed by violinist Elmar Oliveira. Included is a colorful 40 page booklet, written by frequent Vox liner note contributor, Richard Freed, outlining the Vox history with special attention to its visionary founder, George H. de Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (a collateral descendent of Felix & Fanny). My set also came with a "complete listing" insert of Vox Boxes, so many of which have been discontinued since 1995. One could only wish for a fourth CD devoted to the avant garde music Vox issued on the Turnabout & Candide labels, proudly mentioned in the booklet, but alas, tapes apparently buried in a secret vault somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired concertos of a one-time neglected brass sackbut.......1999-06-06

The Trombone has come of age of itself. Time was it inhabited the backwalls of the orchestra to sit tirelessly counting rests. Slowly we have pieces now for solo trombone, in fact there is an entire repertoire which Lindberg has recorded vigorously. The Rouse concerto casts something similar to his "First Symphony" with bursting lyricism of strings screeching in the stratosphere, with thick impenetrable lower strings. The odd mimicking of ideas is slightly humorous. A direct imitation is quite innocent yet filled with high energy, even jazzy in gesture at times. Rouse knows how to build momentum, but I think it is not enough all the time or not well paced With this large gestural scope the Rouse requires a possessed performer at minimum. Augusta Read Thomas has an original voice here. Her music displays well crafted lyricism, lapidiarian like with well balanced chordal sonorities, knowing how to mix and blend strings and winds. She is less informed in her use of percussion. She knows brass well, she played trumpet once, but here the trombone has a story to tell, one of elegant lyricism, meaning her music transcends the instruments obvious historical baggage of relative arrogance heaviness and clumsiness. She knows how to shape her solo accomplice into the fabric of the orchestra. The Chavez as well is a good example of this neglected composer. And Lindberg knocks the hell out of anything he blows. He can also be senstitive as well to the metaphysical voice contained within each work

5 out of 5 stars Three knockouts by a trombone heavyweight.......1999-04-13

Read Thomas is someone who has found a unique voice. She is elegantly ugly at times, and evocative without knowing. But there is an intense transparent lyricism which runs through all her music. She glides and lilts her way through her well thought-out pieces not bothering to write so that everyone in the orchestra plays. She for instance downsizes the lower voices, something I find fascinating. Here the trombone solo is music it has been wanting to play all its life,so neglected and pigeon-holed as a clumbsy clown. But not here, Read Thomas reestablishes its grandeur and dignity. So does Rouse but in an ever more gut-wrenching way. I feel the presence of his "First Symphony" here the "Adagio" the darkly packed lower voices there and here again served him well with high-tension violin melos.Dedicated to Bernstein a friend, the piece has an obvious miniature requiem-like feel. But things do get jazzy, huffy with Lindberg teasing and tempting the orchestra to mimic him and does a few times. A funny bit I guess proclaiming Lenny's self-consciousness. Chavez to we hardly hear or know, but this is a well constructed work with again the lyricism the trombone has been begging for and needs.
