I won't try to make the case for Gigli's operatic singing. He's far too well known and debated amongst opera-lovers for me to add anything. I do want to offer a comment or two on this recording, however.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the transfer which Nimbus Records manages. As is well known, they built a special apparatus for playing such old 78 rpm records as the ones this CD used as source material. Perhaps their pains have never been so well rewarded as in this case. The transfers strike me as being among the best I've heard from 20's & 30's era recordings. (They were electrical, at least, and not the older acoustic types.)

Three cheers to Nimbus for these excellent transfers!

The selection this CD offers, is also, I think, outstanding. Most of these arias are among the very most popular tenor highlights, so it is easy to compare Gigli's performances with those of others. (I believe all the pieces are operatic arias except for the last one, which seems to be an art-song.)

The liner notes are informative and well-written, focussing on Gigli's very distinguished and pretty long career. They also discuss briefly the individual arias and how they fit into their operas. (We don't get the texts, but these are all pretty familiar, so that shouldn't be a problem.)

Gigli sings these arias in Italian, by the way, even the ones from French operas, like Bizet's "Pearl-Fishers" ("Les Pecheurs de Perles"). That isn't unusual for an Italian tenor, especially of Gigli's era. (Remember, even Jussi Bjoerling did most of his early recordings in Swedish.)

All in all, I'd give this CD a very strong recommendation for those who already love Gigli and for those who want to know what he sounded like. This is a very fine sample, I think.

While the recording is as good as can be expected, the voice of Beniamino Gigli must have been delivered to earth by the angels. His ability to take the high notes and deliver them in their purest form is unrivaled by anyone before or after. According to the recording notes, the role of Prince Calaf in Turnadot was written with him in mind. He was a work horse throughout his career, and toward the end his voice showed the signs of the wear and tear inflicted from performance after performance and some of his often critized affectations. But, he was still the best, even at the end.

If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing Gigli before, get this CD along with Volume One, and be prepared to be for a treat!

    Album Description

    Neva Pilgrim is known throughout the country for her extensive work with composers, many of whom have written for her. She appears regularly in recital and as soloist with orchestras, having performed with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Syracuse Symphony and Clarion Concerts. She has concertized in Japan, Canada and Europe and appeared at such festivals as Tanglewood, Marlboro, Chautauqua, Monadnock, and Saratoga Baroque.

    Edward Smith , is known throughout the USA and Europe as a soloist and ensemble performer. H received his Bachelor of Music from Lawrence University, studied composition with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy, and was a student of Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale. Mr. Smith was a member of the famed New York Pro Musica from l964-69, was a founding member of the Philidor Trio, and has been a regular performer with the New York Consort of Viols and the Waverly Consort. He presently resides in Verona, Italy.

    Steven Heyman studied at Juilliard and the Hochschule für Müsik in Vienna. He has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe and has received prizes in competitions including the Beethoven Competition in Vienna, the Gina Bachauer, Southern International Competition, the Portland [Maine] Competition and the American Music Scholarship Competition. He was the top American and fourth Laureate in the prestigious Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition. Mr. Heyman teaches at Syracuse University and Hamilton College in upstate New York.

    Pilgrim's voice is without expression or feeling, and unfortunately, is with excessive and unstable vibrato. The selections are wide-ranged and interesting. The program has great potential as a comprehensive resource, but it's vocal performance lacks talent, technique, and interpretation.

      Leonard Warren was a baritone noted mostly for the power of his dark baritone voice, but he could also sing quite sensitively as this collection proves. Unfortunately, he does NOT sing sensitively in the heavy-handed, old-fashioned readings of Handel, Bach, "Aamarilli" or "O del mio amato ben," but his performances of tracks 3, 7, 9, 10, 13, 17-22 and 24 are superb. Especially interesting is his baritone version of the tenor specialty "Mattinata," which he turns into an intimate love ballad...I have never heard the like, and it is surprisingly effective. In the arias, of course, Warren is in his element; the "Faust" is sung much like Alexandru Agache in the Rizzi recording, and "Nemico della patria" is a predictable tour-de-force. William Sektberg's pianism is competent and perfunctory, nothing more. American-based singers of this era (among them Steber, Merrill and Bjorling) didn't exactly use the best pianists most of the time; the singing was the focus of things. Recommended, then, with a few reservations.

        I actually picked up this album at the Folger Shakespeare library, the D.C. library/theater at which the Folger Consort is based. I listened to it and was immediately pleased. The instrumental pieces aren't quite my thing, but they're very well executed. The madrigals, though, which make up about half of the album, are just superb. My title really says it all--these recordings are sensitive, energetic, and really just excellent. Pick it up and enjoy.
