5 out of 5 stars Provides a context for J.S. Bach.......2006-12-27

This is wonderful stuff. You can listen to it with pleasure without concerning yourself with history or musicology at all.

But if you ARE interested in such matters, Buxtehude was not only n influence upon, he was an inspiration to, the incomparable J.S. Bach. It takes nothing away from Bach to say that his genius didn't come from nowhere, it didn't drop onto this planet from Mars.

And when you listen with that thought in mind, you get extra levels of satisfaction from this recording.

Although Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707) spent most of his life in Lübeck, Germany, the Danes have always been proud to claim him as one of their own because he spent his formative years in Denmark. The Danish record label, da capo, originally published these performances of his Sonatas, Op. 1, for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord, in 1995 and it won a Danish 'Grammy' that year. And no wonder. These are marvelous performances by three marvelous musicians -- John Holloway, violin, Jaap ter Linden, viola da gamba, and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, harpsichord. Holloway has recorded much baroque music, including a terrific set of Biber sonatas. For a time ter Linden seemed to appear on every baroque recording that came my way. Mortensen participated in one of my favorite recordings of this past year, a set that contained performances of Bach harpsichord concerti. Holloway, long the concertmaster of Roger Norringston's London Classical Players, has just been named music director of Atlanta's hot baroque ensemble, New Trinity Baroque.

Buxtehude is remembered mostly as a composer of organ and sacred music. He was organist at the main church in Lübeck for almost forty years. The story of how Bach walked to Lübeck to study with Buxtehude is well-known. He wrote very little chamber music, and this disc is one of a series of three that contains the lot. One presumes that Naxos will reissue Vols. 2 & 3 in due time. Op. 1 consists of seven 'sonatas,' which are composed partially in his 'stylus phantasticus' in which each of the instrumentalists, rather as in jazz, is allowed free improvisation for a few measures in turn. Actually, of course, Buxtehude composed those measures, but the effect is one of spontaneous improvisation for each of the players. As Kerala Snyder has it in the New Grove's, "These are sonatas a due, based on virtuoso and integrated writing for the violin and gamba. Although real trio texture sometimes occurs, the continuo line is more often a simplification of the gamba part. The structure of the sonatas is based on an alternation of tempo and texture, but this can take place either by means of tonally closed, independent movements or with sections that flow together; there is no standardization of their number, which ranges from three to 14." Half the sonatas have an ostinato movement in which a pattern is set up in the continuo and followed through to the end. To this listener, the sonatas overall convey a sense of informality, brio, and an almost romantic expression of feeling. It is entirely apt that this CD's instrumentalists mirror that approach in their playing. The result is joyous. One comes away from this music refreshed, invigorated, stimulated. One looks forward the next release, the Op. 2 set, also of seven sonatas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to this countertenor and well-rounded compilation of his work.......2007-04-02

If you're new to Andreas Scholl and want to dip a toe in the water of his recordings I think this would be an excellent choice - not only because it is mid-priced and because it has a generous 21 tracks. This countertenor singer has an unsurpassed voice, pure and beautiful but also strong and yet not overblown. Unlike many singers he doesn't (for me) ruin it by being excessively warbly but adds just the required variety to the tone.

This album contains a selection of tracks from several of his albums for the Harmonia Mundi label (he then switched to Decca and is now back with HM) which include a variety of styles and accompaniments. The first two tracks, for example, are English folksongs, then we have an Air from Handel's Messiah and three tracks (one instrumental) from Handel's Serse opera, some lively Vivaldi cantatas, there are a couple of German baroque songs, a JS Bach opera Aria from Hercules and finally the big guns (in my opinion), "Agnus Dei" from J S Bach's Mass In B Minor, Vivaldi's "Stabat Mater," a Buxtehude cantata "Jubilate Domino" and the incomparable recording of "Erbarme Dich" from the St Matthew Passion by Bach. That last track is so good I tend to feel I have to lie down afterwards and contemplate the world whilst waiting for the hairs on the back of my neck to settle down. The album price is worth it just for that one track.

The accompaniment on this album varies from just lute (in the folk songs), organ lute and cello on the German baroque songs, the Ensemble 415 with Chiara Banchini and several full orchestras. There's something here for everyone and none of the tracks is in any way disappointing (although I have my favourites, of course). The album was produced in 2000 and of course Andreas Scholl has done many more recordings and probably become an even better singer since this album but it's still an excellent album which can be played and enjoyed over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars heavenly.......2006-12-10

andreas scholl does it again. the beauty of this "voice" is expressed in this lovely selection. so far my favorite scholl cd, with his pergolosi stabat mater as a close second. the highlight of this cd i felt was "da quel strale che stilla veleno" from the caldara work madalena ai pieda di christo. with the orchestra directed by his famous teacher rene jacobs this piece is a gem. absolutely heavenly is how i describe the heavenly side of the voice scholl portrays in this sacred opera. other highlights are bach's "agnus dei" from the mass in b minor, which scholl himself has referred to as the most beautiful piece for the countertenor voice. bach's "erbarme dich" from St. Matthews Passion, which he sings in his mother tongue, and his "ombra mai fu" which is the version i favor as opposed that that which appears on his "best of" cd, of which i also recommend. his version of "ah ch'infelice sempre" by vivaldi will give you chills. it is one of my favorites to sing as i am a countertenor as well. a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-13

Andreas Scholl is regarded as one of the finest countertenors of our generation and has appeared throughout the world under the direction of many notable conductors. I personally think that the most important contribution he as has made is to the rediscovery of the German Baroque repertoire. There are two examples on this disc from his album :German Baroque Songs, which I think is one of his finest discs. He is also very interested in pop music and sound techniques. One can only hope that he doesn't decide to make an album of pop songs. He came close to it in that miserable disc: The Three Countertenors. However, I do think this is a very excellent collection of songs from his various recordings. I expecially liked the Vivaldi 'Cessate, omai cessate' and the 2 German Baroque songs: "Ach Liebste, lass uns eilen" by Johann Nauwach and "Kunst des Kussen" by Andreas Hammerschmidt.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque My Heart.......2002-09-13

For a relatively young singer, Andreas Scholl has a surprising number of recordings. This attests to his amazing talent and the increasing popularity of music for countertenors. This CD is a sampler of Scholl's repertoire.

The English folksongs are interesting and pleasant, but for me, it is the Baroque works that truly shine. Scholl's voice is remarkably pure; his versatility and fluidity lend themselves perfectly to the currents of Baroque music. His take on Handel's Xerxes is incredible-this is music at its finest: pure joy, pure passion, raw emotion. It is heart-wrenching and soul-shaking. In "But who may abide the day of His coming?" from the Messiah, Scholl masters the balance between structured discipline and bravura "riffs" that demonstrate a singer's range and talent. Vivaldi's Sabat Mater, one of my favorite pieces of music, gets glorious treatment.

I'm glad that our civilized world had abolished the practice that creates a castrato, and I'm glad that there are rare talents like Scholl who can give us a sense of this musical genre.

The only downside to purchasing this CD is that you will immediately want to run out and purchase the complete version of each sample presented here!

If you enjoy listening to the magic of countertenors, I highly recommend Yoshikazu Mera, an amazing young Japanese artist. Start with his "Baroque Arias" CD, and I'm sure you will try more.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime compliation of Scholl's Harmonia Mundi recordings.......2002-01-23

Andreas Scholl is the countertenor, nay, the *VOICE* of all time. None can match him for clarity, diction, tone, precise phrasing, or *passion* that he puts into every song that he performs. For me, Scholl's voice is the voice of a divine being, at once something mysterious, holy, achingly beautiful and otherworldly.

If you believe me to exaggerate, so be it. To each his own. Countertenors are not to everyone's tastes even though they are more visible and mainstream than thirty years ago. Yes, there is perhaps some novelty to be found for the uninitiated at the sound of a man singing falsetto. I did not say "singing like a woman" because I do not believe that to be the purpose. "Singing like a woman" in my book defines Brian Asawa and David Daniels, two popular American countertenors who, to my delicate ears, sound exactly like mezzo sopranos and not the otherworldly, decidedly masculine sound of a countertenor (with the exception of Dominique Visse, whose voice is extremely androgynous, especially in the higher registers). This is only my humble opinion.

I discovered Andreas Scholl three years ago and have collected many of his works since. My first Scholl song was "Ombra Mai Fu," a song that is present on this collection. I was in awe, in heaven even, at the first sound of his pure voice, that first gentle crescendo that hinted of sensuality, vocal purity, a past era of Bach, Handel, Hasse. Scholl's phrasing is lush, his singing is effortless, he makes sparing use of vibrato, spinning track after track of an unmatched vocal tapestry. At times Scholl and the orchestra match each other note for note, at other times his voice soars above into the heavens ("Cessate, omai cessate").

"The Voice" covers various styles from nine different Andreas Scholl Harmonia Mundi recordings (Deutsche Barocklieder, English Folksongs and Lute Songs, Kantate, St. Matthew Passion, Cantates Profanes, Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo, Ombra mai fu, Messiah, Stabat Mater). Andreas quit Harmonia Mundi in 1999 and signed a recording contract with Decca Classics, on which he has released five additional recordings (Nisi Dominus, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Heroes, A Musicall Banquet, and Wayfaring Stranger).

It is my opinion that the best of Scholl's works up to the present were with Harmonia Mundi, as these 21 selections show. We have the pleasure of hearing Andreas sing English lute songs ("The Three Ravens," "Barbara Allen"), Baroque religious works by Bach, Handel, Caldara and Buxtehude ("Erbarme Dich," "Agnus Dei," "But Who May Abide," and "Jubilate Domino"), German Baroque songs, and other Baroque cantatas by Vivaldi and Bach.

At present (including several upcoming projects) Scholl's discography is over 75 recordings large. This is an excellent and affordable introduction to the voice of a most remarkable man.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous and stylish performance.......2007-05-13

The interpretation in this recording is stunningly beautiful, stylish and elegant. An excellent collection of some of the most beautiful sacred cantatas of Buxtehude is presented, all performed superbly. The organ Fuga, although seems to have no particular logic in the disc, is elegantly played, and serves as some sort of an interlude between the cantatas Mein Herz ist bereit and Cantata Domino. I have not checked the keys of each piece, but it seems that the cantatas were mostly performed in Chorton, as they would most likely have been done in Luebeck in Buxtehude's time. The performance of the Purcell Quartet alone deserves the purchase of the disc, not to mention the beautiful baroque voices of Suzie LeBlanc, Emma Kirkby, and Peter Harvey. The CD booklet has comprehensive information about Buxtehude and the works included, translations of cantatas in three languages, biographies and photos of the soloists and the Purcell Quartet. A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED recording.

    5 out of 5 stars Buxtehude & Bryndorf.......2004-06-22

Adds up to an unequalled combination. Sound is marvellous, clean and crisp, and Bine Bryndorf a performer with a due restraint that plays to this music's advantage. The music is never thick, and is almost without exception engaging to one's ear and to the senses. If you are an organist, the detailing of the instrument's registrations (the Johan Lorentz at St. Mary's Church) should delight as greatly as the music itself. Listening to this quite makes one understand why Mr Bach chose to hike for hours and hours just to hear old Buxtehude play.

Not always have we got a clear notion as to the extent in which Buxtehude influenced the work of J.S. Bach. Neither is a Buxtehude's full collection available in just one album at such an accesible price. This is an impeccable remasterisation of a celebrated performance of Walter Kraft on the Lubeck Cathedral organ: an instrument very similar to those Buxtehude wrote for.

5 out of 5 stars Die Orgelwerke Buxtehudes minus 2.......2006-07-07

This is by far (with the exception of the set performed by Harald Vogel) the best recording of Buxtehude's complete output for Organ. With two exceptions (not included in this recording are the Praeludium C-Dur BuxWV 138 and the Kanzonette a-Moll BuxWV 225), Walter Kraft here records the entire opus for Organ of his illustrious predecessor at the post of Organist and the Marienkirche zu Luebeck--the Danish/German Organist Dietrich Buxtehude.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining except for the feature piece.......2005-09-25

I'm not familiar with any of these pieces, but the album is very enjoyable. Perhaps these pieces were meant to be played on the organ, but the use of harpsichord enables the separate voices and melodic lines to be heard clearly. My favorite pieces are the toccara and two preludes (G major and G minor), especially the G minor.

My quibble with the album is the featured "La Capricciosa" variations. Don't imagine that you will hear a work of the complexity of the Goldberg or Diabelli variations. It's really more of a pedagogical piece. The theme is prominent in all variations and frankly gets tiresome after only a few (after all, Bach only used it - heavily elaborated - once in Goldberg). Naxos has then grouped 4 or 5 variations into the same CD track, making it difficult to know when an old one has stopped and a new one begun. Worst of all is the complete lack of notes to explain the variations. Only the humorous "bad taste" variation is identified. So unless one is very knowledegable about 17th century keyboard music, it is difficult to appreciate what Buxtehude is doing in every variation.

That being said, the muted variation (#16?) is gorgeous and my favorite of all of them.

But buy the album. The rest is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Buxtehude's Harpsichord Works, Beautifully Presented.......2005-04-02

Chances are you've never heard any of Buxtehude's harpsichord music. I certainly hadn't in more that fifty years of concert-going and record-collecting. That's because his keyboard music is best known as played on the organ. And indeed most of his keyboard music is specifically for the organ--it contains pedal parts. But sometimes at the back of collections of his organ music there were pieces marked 'manualiter' (for manuals only) that not only can be played on the harpsichord but indeed, from internal evidence, were probably meant for that instrument (or any other pedal-less keyboard). Glen Wilson, a fine American keyboard player long resident in the Netherlands, brings us, in this hour-long CD, a collection of some of the choicest manualiter specimens. And it shows Buxtehude to be a worthy link between Froberger (1616-1667) and Bach (1685-1750).

The CD contains a wild mixture of styles and formats. It starts with a five-minute Toccata in G, that then leads into one of the larger works, 'La Capricciosa,' a set of 32 variations on the tune known as 'Bergamasca' (but in Germany known perhaps better as 'Kraut und Rüben' ['Cabbages and Carrots', the same popular song Bach used in the Quodlibet, Variation 32, of his 'Goldberg Variations']). 'La Capricciosa,' in G major, could be seen as a kind of model for Bach's better-known work. It is an oft-told story that Bach made a walking journey to Lübeck to heard Buxtehude play and learn from him; indeed he over-stayed his leave from his church job of the time in order to have more time with Buxtehude. This is also when he turned down the job of succeeding Buxtehude in his job at the Marienkirche because to do so would have required him to marry Buxtehude's spinster daughter.

The Chorale-Partita based on the chorale, 'Auf meinen lieben Gott,' BuxWV 179, is an odd duck in that it combines features of the suite (with an Allemande and Double, Sarabande, Courante and Gigue) with that of a set of variations. It is extraordinarily unusual for all the dances in a suite to be based on a single tune, as is the case here. There is a second suite in G minor, BuxWV 241, that is more like the suites we are familiar with, with the usual dance movements (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue) based on different themes. Rounding out the disc are smaller single movements: two separate Praeludia, BuxWV 162 and 163, each containing fugal passages; a Canzonetta in G, BuxWV 171, and a very nice 7-minute 'Air with Two Variations in A Minor,' BuxWV 249. The latter is an impressively solemn, dark-hued work. It is wonderful to hear these works that are clearly transitional between those of the great Froberger and Bach works so familiar to us from many performances and recordings. It is particularly interesting to hear Buxtehude's own 'Goldbergs' (so to speak) and to hear a couple of suites from the earliest days of that form later brought to such perfection by Bach.

Wilson's harpsichord is a modern copy of a 1626 Ruckers made by Jan van Schevikhoven and the recording was made in a nicely resonant space in the Schüttbau, Rügheim, Germany in July 2003.

This particular cd is an excellent choice for those who want an introduction to organ music. The collection music from germany, England, and France - the three main categories of organ music. The only downside to this CD is that only part 1 of the Toccata and Fugue in d-minor BWV565 is on this CD. Overall, the performances are not bad. However, there are better recordings of this stuff.

    Album Description

The works recorded here illustrate Buxtehude's masterful command of the huge variety of styles that characterized the sacred cantata in Germany during the seventeenth century. Each begins with an instrumental passage, and sung text is interspersed with instrumental responses, sometimes in strophic form. In the larger cantatas for all three voices, the music allows for the maximum of contrast, whereas the four solo cantatas give a more intimate expression of Buxtehude's craft. Into the latter category falls the extremely virtuosic Jubilate Domino, one of Buxtehude's best-known cantatas.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite CD.......2006-04-28

The two previous reviewers did a wonderful job which I won't even attempt topping as it would be impossible. But I must say that I agreed completely that Matthew White is superb, particularly on this disk. He shines on "Jesu meine Freud und Lust", I play it over and over... its just a masterpiece and I never really remember what it means in English and it doesn't matter, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and promising recording.......2005-08-07

Just a short review from me.
This recording is superb and the singing is very fine, indeed. The countertenor, Matthew White, is new to me and he has a very powerful and rich voice. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. The cantatas presented here features voices, strings and basso continuo. None of the larger scaled cantatas with clarini, timpani, cornetti, tromboni and fagotti by Buxtehude are featured. However, we have a very beautiful collection of cantatas for voice(s) and small string instrumental groups. The works are sublime.

Many may already know the Jubilate Domino, BuxWV 64 from other recordings. Matthew White's interpretation is a very contender.

The Aradia Ensemble goes from strength to strength - last year they gave us a fine rendition of Rameau's Castor et Pollux and more recently they have made one of the most delightful CDs of 2005 - the 8 Symphonies of William Boyce (also on NAXOS). This Buxtehude CD will reinforce their reputation as one of the Baroque music groups that is really making entertaining, expressive, stylish, colourful and wonderful recordings these days.

    Impressive? You betcha!

4 out of 5 stars Buxtehude Cantatas in Sparkling Performances.......2004-12-22

The Aradia Ensemble has become one of Canada's, and the world's, best baroque groups. They have now recorded more than a dozen CDs on the Naxos label. This is, as far as I know, their first go at the music of Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) but one hopes it won't be their last. This CD contains six sacred cantatas, all for solo singers or small vocal ensembles accompanied by small instrumental group (including at times baroque violins, viola, cello, viola da gamba, violone, theorbo and positif organ) all led by Kevin Mallon. The styles vary according to the forces called for. All have instrumental introductions, the complexity of which is determined by the form of the subsequent text and its treatment for voices and instruments. Most familiar is 'Jubilate Domino' sung with laserlike intonation and sweet tone by countertenor Matthew White. This 9-minute hymn of praise begins with a long string/organ introduction that gives us materials that are then used in the florid sung line. The form is semi-strophic, with solo instrumental intermezzi between the verses. White's solo singing is also heard in 'Jesu, meine Freud und Lust,' and 'Wenn ich, Herr Jesu, habe dich' as well as in the three cantatas that call for the singing of all three soloists. He is clearly the star of this issue and one predicts a big career for him.

Katherine Hill, a clear-voiced soprano of the Emma Kirkby stripe, is heard in another solo cantata, 'Sicut Moses' ('As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up'). The three soloists (including bass Paul Grindlay) are heard together in three other cantatas, 'Was frag' ich nach der Welt, 'In te, Domine, speravi,' and the dramatic 9-minute 'Wie schmeckt es so lieblich und wohl' ('How lovely and good the saviour') with its introduction and instrumental ritornelli, passages for combined voices as well as those for each of the soloists. This is a virtuoso work, calling for exciting (and expertly done) fioriture from the singers and solo playing from the instrumentalists.

The CD also contains the familiar Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161 (originally for organ) arranged by Mallon for strings. I prefer it on the organ, but it is nonetheless an effective transcription. (It might be added that pitch on this CD seems to be pretty close to modern concert A=440, not radically lowered as it so often is in baroque recordings.) Sound is clean and lifelike.
