If the people at Nimbus are smart, they'll do a whole collection of discs on this theme. The literary-musical connection is, when done tastefully, as it is here, irresistible. As the intelligent and interesting notes maintain, "London at the time of Jane Austen was one of the most exciting centers in all of Europe for music," and this was an era of great fertility of composers in general. Lucky Jane! Imagine publishing your second novel the same year that Beethoven's Seventh Symphony receives its premiere. Or offering your fourth novel to the public near the time of the first performance of Schubert's Fifth Symphony. The program highlights popular music from Austen's time by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Fasch, J.C. Bach, Boyce, Schubert and others. I find the exclusion of chamber music a little odd here, though, since chamber music was the rage among the sort of gentlemen and women of the country about whom Austen wrote so well. --Gwendolyn Freed

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

My favorite classical music album.......2006-09-30

I first listened to this entire set of music on cassette in 1983 and prior to that I heard parts of it on a CBC radio program called "Gilmour's Albums" in 1979. It remains my most favorite classical music album. The range of sounds coming from the organ and the interpretation of each piece is wonderful. Having this music still available after nearly 50 years, and on CD no less, is a tribute to Fox and his outstanding talent.

Good as an introduction to the organ (and Virgil Fox).......2006-01-24

I hate to beat a dead horse (with 7 reviews) and to slightly contradict some of the previous opinions, but I can't agree that this CD is one of Fox's greatest. It serves as a fine introduction to those who want to hear the rich tonal palette of an organ and indeed, few are finer than Fox in the jaunty Schumann "Canon" and the oh-so-sweet "Ye Sweet Retreat." However, repeated listenings show the Little Fugue and Handel to be a bit sloppy, and the overall nature of the CD somewhat one-dimensional, with the faster pieces very fast and ending very loud, the slower pieces very slow and ending very softly.

This is not to denegrate Fox, who especially for an organist, had an unbelievable control and understanding of dynamic shading - it's more that the program itself suffers from a lack of variety. Perhaps this CD, being an RCA release, served an important purpose in getting organ music, and more importantly classical music in general, to the broader public.

But for more serious artistry, turn to recordings like Digital Fox (1978) and these unjustly underpublised re-releases of Fox playing major organs:
1) Virgil Fox at Hammond Castle -- available at organarts.com with samples and background info. Contains incredible, I mean incredible, interpretations of Franck's Grande Piece Symphonique and Reubke's Sonata on the 94th Psalm, to name only a few
2) Virgil Fox Command Performances 1963-1965 -- available on Amazon and organarts.com. Fox plays the organs of Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center (with an extremely intense reading of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor), Boston Symphony Hall, and the Riverside Church. GET THESE ASAP - THEY ARE SUPERB!

Excellent Music choice........2003-12-13

Virgil Fox is without a doubt one of the most advanced organists in the new phase of Organs. As an Organist myself, there are many new changes with Organbuilding and how older Organists try to adjust and try to get used to. From the Sound of the Organ it is indeed a rather powerful Organ with what sounds like a Possible 32ft Reed!!! I do not know where this recording was held at, but You need to listen to some of the Samples that there is. There are a wide variety of moods with this organ all the way up to a very scary but demanding Full Organ! Buying this cd is a MUST. If not then at least listen to the samples. You will not consider it a waste of time.

Riverside Organ Is Stretched to Its Limits in This One - - -.......2002-12-14

If you like flamboyant, this CD will blow your skirt right up there! The dynamic range of the music in this CD will test your stereo system to the limits. Every part of the organ is used, from the shyest Kleine Erzähler to what must be a Double Bombarde.

The songs showcase the organ and are played flawlessly, even if somewhat ambitiously interpreted. If you're tired of hearing the Little Fugue in G Minor played like a funeral dirge on a worn-out calliope, then you'll appreciate what Fox does with it on the big Aeolian-Skinner. Absolutely incredible! On the other hand, I personally would have enjoyed C.M. Widor's Toccata from the 5th taken a little slower. Perhaps Virgil was running late for supper or had to go to the bathroom when performing this one, 'cause it could stand a little Largo to let the notes pop out. Nevertheless, it shows what "Nimble-Fingers" can do.

Technically, the CD is flawless, except for some low-level noise heard during the quieter interludes when the volume is up. Ideally, there should be no noise here at all but what do you want for coming from 40-year-old tape masters??? That one flaw is vastly overshadowed by the excellent stereo separation and extreme dynamic range, with absolutely no rumble or flutter to be heard.

The CD includes a couple of the better-known pieces, and the lesser-known ones are equally interesting. Can't go wrong with this CD, but don't expect to get much out of it in your car CD player due to the wide dynamic range and the inherent noise in the car (unless of course you're driving a Mercedes)!!

Outstanding organ program.......2001-02-06

This is the first album of organ music I ever bought back in the days of vinyl. I have always loved it, I practically wore it out. Mr. Fox was the teacher of a friend of mine and I got to hear him once. His program here is varied and the sound is excellent. He did a lot for the advancement of organ music in the USA, we owe him a huge debt. Warmly recommended.

William Boyce is a comparatively unknown composer, but one who merits greater recognition. He combines a wide ranging capability for orchestration, for innovative rhythms and for delightful melodies. Fresh, clear, colourful and stylish.......2005-08-06

This recording is excellent and the Aradia Ensemble just seems to get better and better with every recording. This recording presents us with eight symphonies by William Boyce. These works have a very agreeable late Baroque flavour to them.
Boyce was not quite in the same league as Handel, Haydn or Rameau, but his music is, nonetheless, very beguiling and attractive. A solo for the flute in the first symphony could have almost been written by Rameau.

The Aradia Ensemble plays Boyce's works with great ease and skill. I have listened to this CD many times since I bought it two weeks ago. It makes for very enjoyable listening.

Delightful Music With a Spring In Its Step.......2005-09-26

This CD is an excellent example of music written in the transitional Rococo period between Baroque and Classical. When these eight delightful symphonies, originally composed as overtures between 1739 and 1756, were first published together as a set in 1760, J.S. Bach had been dead only 10 years, Handel one year, and Haydn was 28 years old.

Though Boyce's style has elements that can be compared to these composers (the first movement of Symphony No. 5 in particular is reminiscent of Handel's Water Music and Music for Royal Fireworks), he is neither a faded echo of Bach, nor a mere imitator of Handel, nor a pale precursor of Haydn. He has his own distinctive musical style that is fully apparent in this recording. As Michael Tilmouth writes in his informative essay in the CD booklet: "If we were asked to name the native musician most typical of his profession in 18th-century England we would almost certainly nominate William Boyce. . . . No doubt Boyce learned a good deal from his great contemporary Handel. But his music has a robust and fresh quality of its own, nowhere more apparent than in the vigorous 'jiggs' and sturdy, tuneful gavottes of these symphonies, a quality that seems innately English and makes a distinctive and valuable contribution to the music of the 18th century."

The allegro movements of these symphonies, filled with bouyancy and enthusiasm, resonate with vitality. The adagio movements are enchanting. The performance, recorded in June 1986 with Trevor Pinnock conducting The English Concert and playing the harpsichord, is first-rate. Pinnock is one of the most distinguished names associated with the period instrument movement. The sound quality on this CD is crystal clear. Time = 60:04. Highly recommended.

Great, great music.......2001-03-30

I didn't know anything about William Boyce before I bought this CD, and now I am hooked on his music! His music is wonderful, very bright, happy, and highly enjoyable. I've been told that he is also known as the "English Bach," and I don't think that's an exaggeration. Boyce's music is in a somewhat conservative Baroque style, even though he lived during the end of the Baroque period, when the early Classical and Rococo music dominated the music scene. However, I am certain his music must have been a hit, especially these 8 symphonies. Briliant music performed by Trevor Pinnock's briliant English Consort, this CD is a must-have! My personal favourites are symphonies #1 and #4.

Superb recording!.......2000-06-03

When you hear these 8 symphonies you will notice that William Boyce (1711-1779) is a very great and enjoyable english baroque and rococo composer. Try listen to the "symphony no. 8 in D minor" especially the last movement and you will think: How great the music was in the 18th-century. The outstanding conductor Trevor Pinnock and his authentic instruments ensemble The English Concert gives a first-class, lively and superb performance. This cd is highly recommendable.

Pinnock does it again.......2000-02-09

I love the overtures (or symphonies) of William Boyce, the "English Bach," as I'm sure most lovers of late baroque music do. Trevor Pinnock et al. are in superb form here; I'd say this is the Boyce Symphonies disc to purchase.

Top notch.......2006-07-01

In my opinion, this is one of the best CD's I have ever herd. The playing is clean and pure, and never gets old. I have 100's of classical CD's, but I never tire of this one.

Bright, snappy brass chior feeling........2000-05-20

This is a bright, snappy forward moving CD. I have owned all their records/CD's at sometime, and this is my all time favorite. The playing is awesome, very baroque in style. You'll recognizes some tunes and fall in love with the rest.

If you enjoy a wide range of baroque music, this is a fine choice to compliment Italian and German baroque classics. A bit more structured than Italian, but more flexible than German.

Symphonic baby steps.......2007-05-17

Before there were the symphonies of Mozart and Beethoven, William Boyce was composing the musical baby steps which would lead to the development of symphonies. His music is lovely and moving, and I have long wished that he would be given more exposure. It seems as if my wish might come true as I have heard of release of more of his music lately. Boyce's symphonies are more like what we would call movements - short and sweet. All eight of these symphonies take only an hour to listen to. This version of his eight symphonies taken in hand by the great Sir Neville Marriner and the Orchestra of St. Martin's of the Fields is a good place to start. This is a fine addition to anyone's music collection.

"Calliope: Beautiful Voice," by Emma Curtis and her consort "The Frolick," presents over 2 ½ hours of late Baroque popular song, as collected in the 1739 English songbook "Calliope." This beautifully packaged 2-CD set features 52 songs from many of the major composers who worked in the genre (Boyce, Carey, Corelli, Handel, Purcell) as well as several lesser known ones. The generous booklet includes historical background for the compilation, complete lyrics (in German, French, and English), and insightful commentary by Ms. Curtis.

This collection is clearly a labor of love for Ms. Curtis and company. They have attempted to replicate the sonic environment found in a small meeting hall or private residence, perhaps explaining the predominance of Ms. Curtis' voice in the mix. I would have liked to have heard the musicians better; they play wonderfully, and lutenist Andrew Maginley is a noteworthy soloist in his own right. While Curtis' voice is clearly on the pedestal, she unquestionably delivers the goods. Her voice is not only beautiful but remarkably strong and agile; she delivers the frilliest, most ornate passages with aplomb. She's also confident enough to sing badly on the drinking songs, which were undoubtedly delivered with many a duff note in their day.

Highlights from the collection include the festive opening track "Cupid and Venus," Henry Carey's stately ballad "The Supplication," Handel's humorous (and self-referential) "A Dialogue between Punch and Columbine," Thomas Arne's exuberant "The Miller of Mansfield," and Corelli's "The Praise of Bacchus," which provides a strong finale to the set.

"Calliope: Beautiful Voice" is a veritable feast for fans of early 18th century popular music. Not all these songs are to my taste, particularly those excessively ornamented numbers which showcase Ms. Curtis' vocal talent at the expense of melodic clarity. But as Henry Carey is quoted in the liner notes, "If every Piece should not hit every particular Taste, it is to be consider'd, that Variety makes the Feast." Well said.
