ber. They zip by, but each tone is centered, perfectly struck, and lovely. In truth, the recorded sound here is miles ahead of the thin, screechy sound he got in his earliest recordings with Dohnanyi, some of which are painful even in their recent remastering.
Compared to other versions of the Barber, particularly the classic one from Isaac Stern with Bernstein on Sony, Bell and Zinman ae almost as vigorous rhythmically and never lacking in intensity. One can feel in this work that the composer is wading through caramel, and Bell's ultra-sensitive phrasing could be to much of a good thing. Here it isn't, and Zinman's robust, even rough way with the accompaniment also helps.
I usually have no interest in the music of William Walton, and even among his devotees the Violin Concerto takes second or third place behind the famous Viola Concerto. Yet it's perfect for Bell, who plays with such compelling lyricism that the relatively weak sections still hold one's attention. None of these works are first rate all the way thorugh, and his magic applies to all three, especially whenever there is a long, lyrical line. In sum, if I were to point a new listener to Bell's artistry, I'd choose this CD.

Gorgeous!!.......2005-04-01 This was a pleasure to listen to. The music chosen for the recording brings out the soulful cello sound played so wonderfully by Sara Sant'Ambrogio, and the piano part played so skillfully by Anyssa Neumann rounds it all out. It puts you in another dreamy world!

Another legendary George Szell recording, this time partnering him with Pierre Fournier, the magnificent French cellist. At the very beginning of his career, Szell recorded this concerto in Prague with the Czech Philharmonic and none other than Pablo Casals. That recording, made around 1938, is still available. This stereo remake with the Berlin Philharmonic shows both artists at the very peak of their form. The the couplings, too, are uniquely appealing. That this compelling performance is available on DG's budget line underscores one of the great peculiarities of the classical music business. In case you haven't noticed, there is no relationship at all between quality of performance and price. So what are you waiting for? --David Hurwitz

best Dvorak.......2005-10-09 I have heard perhaps 5 or 6 versions of the Dvorak cello concerto. Of the ones I have heard this is the best (close competition from Du Pre only). The other pieces are okay but the Dvorak is the reason you would purchase this. The recording quality is especially good with the solo cello while the orchestra occasionally is not as clear. Recommended. I would have given it 5 stars if I liked the other two pieces nearly as well.
The best music ever written!.......2004-12-12 Well, that's a large claim to make, but I'm going to be 60 in a few months and so I will state my frank opinion: the Dvorak Cello Concerto is the best piece of music ever written by mankind, and you should really listen to THIS version, with Pierre Fournier on the cello, and George Szell conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.
This could hardly be called "program music." Yet it seems to address any questions which you bring to it -- questions about love, mortality, and the gods, among many others. And there are many, many moments when Dvorak is simply "out there" -- communicating with the stars.
My runner-up is the Brahms Violin Concerto! :-)
Very personal account!.......2004-10-14 The level of concentration throughout in this set of recordings is amazing...even though some may not know it, the Lamoreux orchestra is one of the very finest and it is the oldest orchestra in Paris. All of the recordings are top notch and are played with polish.
As a backgrounder, you may want to investigate the 1936 Casals/Szell coupling of the Dvorak on EMI! Wonderful in different ways!
Dramatic and Passionate.......2004-06-20 Beijingfox2 and California music fan have just about covered the bases regarding this outstanding recording, but I wanted to add a few words from a different perspective. Listen to this CD without being involved in another activity. Turn down the lights. Allow yourself to be totally immersed in the music. All three pieces, but especially "Schelomo" are emotionally powerful, and will sweep you away.
beijingfox.......2003-12-06 There are countless versions in the catalogue of this concerto (probably the most difficult solo cello part to play completely convincingly in the current popular repertoire - it's HARD!) and many play "very well"....Lyn Harrell, Paul Tortelier, Mistislav Rostropovich, Heinrich Schiff, but the overall picture and feel which MUST be portrayed beyond the notes is normally missing to a degree in these and certainly in almost all others (including Yo yo Ma, Jaqueline Du Pre and many many others eauuuch). The technical playing of Fournier is without question particularly authoritative and impressive (all cellists agree!) - the right hand/bowing phrasing is special in a way which is just unforgettable and rich in tone....and the left hand contact and articulation with the strings never less than brilliant and inspired - but beyond that, the romantic sweep, ultimate control and passionate throb of the playing on ALL 4 strings - even high on the fingerboard with the A string (and D) - is unmatched even after 40 years! If you really want to hear one of THE definitive concerto recordings of the gramophone catologue (up there with Josef Hoffman's Chopin concerto recordings) then this is it. You don't necessarily need to be a cellist to appreciate the sheer gifted and beautifully thought-out musical tapestry beyond the bounds of mere cello-playing which is represented in this deeply passionate, and unforgettable performance . Delightful collection.......2001-03-25 A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.
