I really enjoyed listening to this CD. My husband's father used to listen to this band and many others when he would go to Catalina Island for the weekend dances back in the 30's and early 40's. He had many stories to tell about people that he met at the ballroom and fun times that he and his friends had there. Being able to listen to this band helped me to imagine him dancing with Dorothy Lamour and Dolores Del Rio and many others he met in Avalon. He very much liked hearing them play "Harbor Lights"

Now, see, I like the cornball aspect of the big band era as much as anybody else does, but even I have to admit when I'm licked. California-born trumpet player Dick Jurgens led one of the top second-string bands in the early '40s, and had a strong run of hits before World War Two swept him (and most of his players) into the armed services. Be that as it may, Jurgens arrangements are too just too darn sleepy and square for me, it's like getting all the squareness of the Glenn Miller approach, but without any of the pep. Eddy Howard, who was Jurgens' big star vocalist, was never a big favorite of mine, and unfortunately after Howard left the orchestra, Jurgens kept hiring guys who stuck to the same leaden style. Devoted big band fans (among whom I can be counted) may find this disc a blessing -- it certainly has all the hits -- but I can't say that it really wowed me.

Udo's live albums are always amongst the best and this one is no exception. The highlights for me are 'Gaeb' es nur noch dieses Lied für mich' (the German version of 'If I Never Sing Another Song') and Kurze Unterbrechung, his send up of German cable TV.

The only disappointment is that the beautiful 'Das ist dein Tag' is not the concert version, but a recorded version with his daughter, Jenny.

        I am sorry that I cannot give you a personal rating for this item. I ordered this for a friend (John Hawkins). John is 91 years old and not only does he not own a computer, but has no intention of buying one. He sometimes asks me to check on a particular artist on band from the 30s or 40s and then I print out my findings and let him pick out what he wants. That is why you sometimes see his address for the product to be shipped to. However, I have asked him for his opinion of "Your Dance Date/At The Aragon Ballroom" and he rates it with 5 stars. I am ten years younger than John so my taste in music runs to the big bands of the 40s.
        Thank you for the very good service that we have come to expect from Amazon.

        I have waited for quite some time for these releases, and they were finally released, put on one Disc. I had the original first copies and recorded them on tape for, I was wearing the orignals out, especially the "Dick Jurgens at the ARAGON BALLROOM", Listen to his CLEAR-mixtures of songs and see how everyone Danced to this band. His rendition of CUMUNA-was the first song I wore out on his original releases. Every time you would read a Critic on Dick Jurgens, most of the starting lines would be: "NOW THERE IS A DANCE BAND"
