The version of Eugene Ormandy conducting The Philadelphia Orchestra has most youthful and imaginary reading of Peter and Wolf. The color and the flare of the story is vividly drawn out. The orchestral sound are warm, delight and dynamic. Thanks RCA for reserving this musical artistry and rematster it.

This CD is one of my family's favorites. From the soothing voice of David Bowie (yes, THAT David Bowie!) unfolds the delightful story of Peter and his menagerie of animal friends and foes. The orchestration is simply beautiful, the reading expressive and vibrant, and the story a classic. I would highly recommend this CD - as it also includes two other pieces that will delight music lovers of all ages.

These recording from the mid 1940's sound great. The performances are of course wonderful, it is the sound quaility that will catch your attention, if you remember when they were recorded. Most CDs of recording from this era either have major noise problems or sound compression. This 2 disc set does not suffer from either of these problems. The team from Deutsche Grammophon and Andrew Wedman at Emil Berliner Studios are to be applauded. These are mono recordings but DO NOT let that stop you from enjoying them. It was a pleasure to introduce to my grandchildren. MOST important is the narrative that starts each track. Many of the other versions do NOT include this. They were my most favorite memories, and the children still resond to them today. A no - brainer.......2002-04-16 Simply, the best. The best performances, the best sound, the best narration. The best. 'Nuff said. Great Fun.......2001-11-22 The other reviewer is off base. If you don't want narration get a recording without it. With narration or not, Saint-Saens chose his animals and gave his musical interpretation of their appearance. Children can enjoy the verses although Hugh Downs does not have as much fun with them as some narrators. This is a great CD if you want to develop a child's interest in classical music. Beautiful music, but too much narrative........2000-09-03 This "unwashed" recording has the exhilarating tonality of a live performance which many modern digitals lack. Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals" was my 4-year-old's favourite, followed by Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette". Odgen Nash's verses, written to accompany Saint-Saen's work are too clever for young children, who will miss out on the word-play and puns. Also, they tend to interpret the experience too much, which interferes with their imaginations. Of the 6 Pierrot's I've owned, this DeGaetani is the finest. The orch/conducting as well matches DeGaetani's superb artistry. Here is the finest Pierrot ever recorded. the best.......2004-04-08 This is the recording that made me fall in love with 20th century classical music. Hundreds of CD's of modern music later, this one remains very close to my heart. Pierrot is scary, poignant, strident, and sometimes annoying--it's a masterpiece of exaggerated emotion. If God incarnated as a drag queen, this is what He'd sing. "The most prescient confrontation in my life.".......2004-01-19 The above words come from Igor Stravinsky describing his impressions of an early performance of _Pierrot Lunaire_, and given my own reaction to this masterpiece it is a fitting title. Composed in 1912, _Pierrot Lunaire_ (or, _Thrice-seven Songs from Albert Giraud's Pierrot Lunaire_) is a melodrama for voice and a small chamber group, consisting of piano, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, and cello. Each of the 21 parts uses different combinations of instruments along with the vocalist. The vocalist gives frightening life to the text of Giraud's poetry, using an esoteric technique called "Sprechgesang," something between speech and singing. It is recognized as viciously difficult to perform, requiring unqualified control of tone as the vocalist must momentarily touch upon each note before moving to the next. The vocal performance here stands as one of the best I've heard by anyone anywhere. There are three sections, with seven rondels each, and in each Schoenberg deploys colorful combinations of instruments and tonal color, with music often angular and jagged, to underscore the various states of emotional drama. It's unbelievably intense, wild, outlandish, and haunting, especially once you read the translation of the poetry to understand the meaning of each individual part. Book of the Hanging Gardens - quite good, bordering on excellent. But this disc is all about this performance of _Pierrot lunaire_. Essential in every way. Exemplary Schoenberg.......2003-11-24 Jan DeGaetani has legendary technique, which is well suited to the interpretation of twentieth century music. Weisberg elicits top notch performances from the chamber ensemble. Interpretations are first rate. These recordings of Schoenberg are equaled by few and surpassed by none. amazing.......2000-12-10 I love this recording of Pierrot so much that there was a time when I listened to it pretty much on repeat the way people usually do with rock albums. If you've heard another recording of Pierrot and didn't like it (like that horrible Boulez one), do yourself a favor and buy this, and see what it's really supposed to sound like. I've heard this singing surpassed only by a live performance, and that had flaws in other ways. Get this, now, listen to the whole thing while following in the translation, and then, I dare you, tell me this isn't one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Herrmann completely mesmerizes us with his themes, blending variations with eloquent and subtle cues...depicting each character in the film, and fine tuned to the story-line ~ he was a genius and knew his craft well...relies heavily on strings, usually with lyrical solos for the winds...absolute in capturing the essence of each scene, musically letting the audience in through his score ~ the result is colors come shining through with wonderful arrangements...many of the classic film scores have become cult favorites among "film-score-buffs" like me and collectors alike. A Classic Performance of Schuman!.......2000-09-17 I must agree with the previous reviewer, that "American Masterpieces" comprises a very thoughtful collection yet suffers slightly from poor interpretation of certain pieces. But the presence alone of the classic performance of William Schuman's "New England Triptych" by Andre Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic makes this compilation all worth it. I have looked forward for this particular version of Schuman's work to be released on compact disc for several years, in the meantime not being entirely satisfied with other versions that have circulated, i.e. Howard Hanson/the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra on the Mercury Living Presence label, -very poorly executed with an off-key, off-timed horn in the first movement, or the version on the RCA label by Leonard Slatkin and the St.Louis Symph.Orch. which is very well done, yet to my ear still does not compare to the depth and lively energy with which Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic presents this work. I was disappointed with the manner with which the first two pieces by Berstein and Ives were conducted. The "Candide Orchestra" lacked the sensitivity of the performance by Lukas Foss /Milwaukee SO on the Pro Arte label, while Slatkin does a much better job with the Ives piece for RCA. But the remainder of colorful material following Schuman on this CD - even with the overdone "Adagio for Strings" by Barber - makes for a very rewarding listening experience, with the only disappointing exception of the third piece ( "A Narrative") curiously missing from Virgil Thomson's "Acadian Songs and Dances", yet present on an old scratchy, mono LP that I have on the Decca label (Thomas Scherman /the Little Orchestra Society). Did Thomson later revise this suite? Or did this CD run out of space? If the latter is true, one can only wish that Barber's overplayed "Adagio" would have been bumped to make room for the entirety of Thomson's superb "Acadian Songs". American Masterpieces - For pleasure or music ed. resource.......2000-07-28 The American Masterpieces CD is an excellent compilation of music that is uniquely American. Much of the material is based on folk sources, and all of it is thoughtfully selected. THE SORT OF MUSIC THAT BOSTRIDGE'S VOICE WAS MADE FOR.......2002-10-09

Ian Bostridge has one of the most beautiful voices on record, and he has consistently shown courage and wisdom in selecting material that will extend and develop his gifts. Not all of this material has been a perfect match for his young and soaring tenor voice, notably some of Schubert's more dramatic "lieder". In contrast, nothing could be more perfectly suited to his voice than this generous and beautiful collection of traditional English poetic settings by Britten, Finzi, Grainger, Warlock and others.

Bostridge brings more than just a beautiful tone and a subtle musical phrasing to these songs. The challenge any intepreter of English songs has to face is that, in contrast with the pure syllables of most continental languages, the complex vowels of "Southern British English" are formidably difficult to render attractively in song. It's not just a question of singing them prettily. Think how accurately the pronunciation of a word like "house" or "bath" can betray someone's geographical and social background; our vowels are a caste-mark as well as a means of communication. But somehow Bostridge himself, in his fruitful partnership with Julius Drake, manages to transcend our socio-linguistic divisions and deliver these songs in a way that places no barrier between the listener and the music.

The material is wonderful in its own right - a collection of lilting pastoral airs and occasional boisterous ditties. They are at one and the same time ancient and modern, embracing at once the mutual cross-fertilisation between classical and "pop" sensibilities that has always underpinned the best of English music. Even the most trivial of these songs (e.g. "Jillian of Berry") are memorable, and some of them (notably Sir Charles Stanford's chilling musical setting of the Keats' poem, "La Belle Dame Sans Merci") would not have been beneath Schubert himself.

It has been fashionable over the generations to belittle British classic music. "The land without song" England was dubbed, as the sleeve notes poignantly remind us. This CD is a healthy reminder that the global success of English popular music in the latter four decades of the 20th century did not appear out of nowhere; it was built on a solid foundation of past accomplishment that it was for too long fashionable to dismiss. Highly recommended.

Artistry beyond measure.......2002-09-20

This disk is a wonderful treasure. "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing" is an exquisite song that you should not go another day without hearing. I am speaking literally.

Mr. Bostridge's interpretation of Browne's song is amazingly compelling. His ability to express goes beyond that of most other singers - even some great ones. He notes the problems in singing in English (the "extra" vowels, the English vs. German approach to word painting, etc.) and I have to say he triumphs on this disk.

As he also notes, this is NOT a recording of a recital program nor are the songs "English" in nationality - the songs are just set to texts in the English language. I had not heard of some of these composers, but I am enthusiastic in saying that every song on this disk has something very nice to recommend it - at least at the voice and hands of Ian Bostridge and Julian Drake.

I must say a few words about Mr. Drake's playing. Overall he is simply incredible. He has a beauty of tone and a singing style that is not in anyway mere accompaniment. It really isn't even a partnership. It is a unity of artistry that creates this single entity, a song. There aren't many that can pull this off and Mr. Drake should be treasured for this ability. Just amazing artistry.

Please get every disk that Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake have done together. You will thank me for recommending this if you didn't know this already. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on this disk or any comments you have about Bostridge and Drake.

Perfectly Enjoyable.......2002-02-09

I already liked Ian Bostridge, but I thought "English songs" would be rather light and without substance. But I have fallen in love with this CD and never tire of it! I was already an admirer of Vaughan Williams, Britten, Finzi, Warlock and Delius, and I'm glad for this introduction to other composers as well. Also, much beautiful poetry is chosen, from Shakespeare, Yeats, Rossetti, Keats, and others, and each is treated with careful consideration by the composer, *partnering* music with poetry rather than simply enhancing or overshadowing the lyric. Bostridge seems to have the perfect voice for this music, light and charming when appropriate, heart-breaking at other times, always an engaging storyteller. He obviously understands intimately each word and note that he sings. The listener can hear his facial expressions and body language! The English Songbook is a beautiful collection of excellent craftsmanship, and one of the best CDs I have.

Do Not Be Deceived By His Look Of Innocence.......2001-10-14

Just look at Ian on the cover photo of this CD. He's sitting there looking coy, playing with his finger, hair a little mussed, with a very cute boyish smile, as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong mommy, honest." Well he has done it this time.

This CD was my first exposure to Ian Bostridge. I bought it because I was very surprised to know that one of my favorite poems, the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats, was set to music. I spent 17 bucks for one song, and ended up cashing in on 23 others.

To Gratiana Dancing and Singing quickly became a favorite, as did Bold William Taylor. This last one was my first realization of Ian's gift of storytelling. Somehow he is able to make his voice sound like a woman, namely Sally Gray, and the narrator, and the macho Captain, all in the same song. The multiple personalities come out to play similarly in The Death of Queen Jane. I am lulled into quiet reflection and relaxation when Ian sings the Cradle Song.

Check out his CDs of Schubert Lieder, also accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian may be even more at home in German than he is in his native English! Julius is at home with Schubert, especially the water songs, and we are at home listening to this wonderfully weird, warm voice paired with masterful piano playing.

One of the best English-Song CD's available.......2001-09-12

Unlike the reviewer "A music fan from California, USA" I realize that this is not a recital program of music (as even noted in the liner). This is though, an unequaled collection of some of the most beautiful English Songs ever. Ian is on top of his game and J Drake plays, well, I don't have the words. He never fails to impress with his skills. Each key under each finger sings! Back to Ian. As a professional tenor, I am in awe of his voice. It is tender, moving, all the things you want in a good recitalist, and (unlike any of the opera tenors I can think of) it is note perfect. Yes, there are times when his voice seems a little light for the song he may be performing, but it is passionate and caries the pathos of each note/word he sings. BUY THIS CD - you will love it for ever!

Stern Playing From The Heart.......2001-11-19

Isaac Stern one of the top 5 greatest violinist of all time. Here Stern plays short pieces from two of his Lp's, None but the Lonely heart{1963} and Romance{1972}. These two lp's put on CD is a must for any fan of the Violin.

Stern's playing here is top of the line..playing directly from the heart. No other violinist played with so much color and shading as Isaac, and only a few had their own personal sound like Stern did...most other famous violinist play great but they all sound pretty much the same.

The personal sound of a violinist really comes across when he plays encore pieces like Stern is playing on this CD....So if you want to hear The Beautiful Sound of Stern, grab this CD. Also you get beautiful arrangents for violin and orchestra by Arthur Harris. You can never go wrong with a Stern recording.

Best Classical CD I Have Ever Heard!.......2001-11-12

I never write reviews for any of the music or books or anything else that I have ever gotten in my life but this cd is different. It is absolutely beautiful. Every note is perfect. Thus it is my suggestion that you buy this cd, the music is something special.

Superb, one-of-a-kind, the whole world should hear this CD........1999-09-29

I was first introduced to Isaac Stern about 30 years ago when my husband purchased the Humoresque album for a stereo. This album is no longer in existence and looked everywhere for this CD and didn't find until recently. It is just as beautiful as I remember it. We also purchased a second CD to give to our son so that our two grandsons, ages 1 and 3 will have an appreciation of classical music.

Galway is a past master of the flute. The selections on this CD, both familiar and new to this reviewer, are lovely. And more than one is positively haunting. I tell myself each day that I will remove the disk from the changer, to save for another day. But I cannot. I must have my daily dose of Galway. Such is the enchantment that he weaves. Unusual but outstanding flute music.......2001-01-30 This is one of a number of cd's bought for my wife (an avid flute lover) which have turned out to be among my favorites. Galway plays with his normal crispness and energy, but here some unusual pieces one doesn't hear often. The two Khachaturian songs are haunting and the Belfast Hornpipe is so neat! We listen to this often with toetapping, sometimes dancing enjoyment.
