UNT Wind Ensemble is Phenomenal.......2007-01-04
This is a very professional group that makes consistently superb recordings. As a student I had the opportunity to participate in a few music clinics with Eugene Corporon and they were always wonderful experiences. I absolutely respect his work and the musicianship of the UNT wind ensemble and hold them both in the highest regards.
Exceptional Klavier release.......2000-05-22
The Klavier Wind Recording Project, already preparing to release its twenty-second and twenty-third discs this autumn, has produced a wonderful collection of contemporary music for band in addition to identifying several important pieces of the standard repetoire. This particular 1998 release, while full of interesting music, likely only holds appeal for the so-called "band aficionado." The selections on here constitute one of the darker Klavier releases to date, containing music of a somewhat more somber nature.
Opening with Carnegie Mellon-based composer Nancy Galbraith's brighly orchestrated work about mischievous elfin beings, "Danza de los Duendes" provides an excellent opener somewhat reminiscent of John Adam's writing. From there, the title track, Walter Mays' 1996 award-winning "Dreamcatcher" follows. The work, dealing with the Ojibwa belief about the nature of good and bad dreams features quotations of an actual Ojibwa folk tune in many of its melodic motives. Leslie Bassett's 1985 commission to compose a lullaby specifically for band, in particular, for the the conductor's newborn daughter, Leslie, utilizes the composer's "trademark compositional technique." More specifically, a non-serialized twelve-tone method. While the only other Bassett work that I am personally familiar with is his trombone quartet (although he has written a considerable body of music, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Variations for Orchestra"), I still remain unimpressed with the very brief "Lullaby for Kirsten" despite repeated hearings.
Another Pulitzer Prize-winner, Eastman-faculty member Joseph Schwantner, and his ethreal "From a Dark Millenium" provides one of the true high points on this album, although I must agree with a previous review about its disappointing sonics. As in his other two works for wind ensemble (also available from Klavier), the piano contributes a very interesting timbre to the already varied band palette. David Gillingham's 1996 "Waking Angels," inspired by Olga Broumas poem on AIDS, "emanates the mysteriousness, pain, and ruthlessness of the disease...through the imagery of music." Prefaced by Will Thompson's "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling" (of which Gillingham derives some melodic motiff), the work is very interesting and wholly satisfying. Gillingham, currently on the faculty at Central Michigan, is enjoying growing popularity for many of his band works. To conclude this disc, German-composer Rolf Rudin's two-part "Der Traum de Oenghus," based on an Irish fairy tale dealing with nightly visions and dementia (in keeping with the overall theme), with its shimmering introduction, violent (and sometimes martial) middle sections, and quiet closing pages provides a very satisfying finish to this Klavier disc.
The North Texas Wind Symphony under Corporn turns in polished performances, at times full of warthm and brilliance. Technically clean and with good intonation, this disc highlights exceptional wind band literature that would otherwise wait years to be recorded. Recommended for serious band enthusiasts or those simply interested in finding band music of a less "oom-pa" oriented nature.
Wonderful music and wonderful recording.......2000-01-08
I am a huge fan of the Klavier Wind Recording project and this is one of the best CDs yet released. There is a nice balance of works here that center around a common theme. From the bright sound of the Galbraith work to the dark and ponderous "From a Dark Millenium" by Joseph Schwantner, this CD has much to offer its listeners. I am always amazed at the fact that these are college level musicians and not professionals. Everything is technically precise and at the same time very musical and the recording is clear and very well balanced. This is can said for all of the recordings in the series as well. I wish Corporon and Klavier all the luck and hope they continue to deliver such high quality music.

More incredible work from Eugene Corporon!.......1999-12-03
Once again, Corporon's integrity shines through with this effort, a worthy addition to his numerous wind symphony recordings. I must disagree with the criticism of the Schwanter in the previous review. From a Dark Millenium is not titled "For Percussion" like the other mentioned piece. The balance is probably intended to make sure that every line in the music is heard. It is still loud enough to shake the trunk of my car. Overall, the recording deserves much accolade.

poor.......2005-09-23
Very pleased with the promptness of delivery. However, the CD is damaged. The quality of the CD is fine, with the exception of one track, which happened to be the track that I purchased the CD for. It is faulty and does not play - I was very disappointed
Superb Music, Superb Players, Superb Recording.......2001-07-03
Anyone who thinks that bands today play only Sousa marches and pop tunes will be knocked out of their socks and shoes when they hear this (or any other North Texas) recording. Several friends of mine that were in band (high school and college) often ask me what band music is like today, especially if they haven't heard any in the past 10-15 years. When they hear this group, they are stunned.
Band directors and those who follow the band world have known about these recordings for years, but sadly much of the general public thinks that band music is either boring or of a very low quality. Not so. Eugene Corporon and many others like him have done an outstanding job of programming quality band works and bringing them before the public. Composers who would never have considered writing music for concert band 15 or 20 years ago are now very eager to compose for the wind band. Times have changed and it's an exciting time for band literature.
Deja Vu opens with Adam Gorb's "Awayday," which the composer describes as "Gershwin, Bernstein, Stravinsky, and James Bond traveling together at a hundred miles per hour in an open-top sports car." It is an exciting, enegetic, fun piece. The disc closes with one of the most exciting pieces to be written for band in the past several years, Frank Ticheli's "Blue Shades," an electrifying blues/jazz powerhouse that brings to mind the Big Band era and more. In between these pieces is even more great music of various styles from outstanding composers such as Michael Colgrass and Leslie Bassett.
Mr. Corporon is dedicated to taking band music to another level. The North Texas recordings feature the highest quality music recorded with state-of-the-art equipment. A very fine disc!
Blue Shades was the best.......2000-01-08
Blue Shades is probably one of the best band works I have ever heard and played. I played alto sax on this piece at a music camp last year, and Ticheli's complex layering of flat thirds, fifths, and sevenths is just absolutely delicous. Get it.
Another dynamic breakthrough for the University of North Tex.......1999-10-21
Blue Shades is awesome, such dynamics. Close your eyes when you listen to it, you can actually see the different shades of blue before your eyes. Technique and quality is superb, and another wonderfull conducting job. Its emotions will have you tired.

Fabulous recording of Basset's Music for Saxophone and Piano.......2001-04-17
I am in agreement with some of the other reviewers. Donald Sinta has influenced me and my playing so greatly, I don't know where I would be if I had never come across his wonderful playing, which sounds I have been trying to echo myself.
Outstanding Re-release.......2000-12-24
Having any available recording of Donald Sinta is a benefit to the musical profession at-large. Needless to say, he is a rare artist who transcends the saxophone genre, and it is unfortunate there isn't more of a recorded legacy of this major performer/teacher. As reflected in the reviews of his work by major critics over the past thirty years, he is indeed one of the most gifted wind soloists ever, and any musician can learn from his artistry. Students of the saxophone 'must' have this important re-release by New World Records to hear how one should play beyond the limitations and aesthetic constraints of this misunderstood classical instrument.
Opposite reaction.......2000-03-06
This is a fine example of a various array of different new music. The fact that it has Donald Sinta performing is an extra treat! Only few recordings are available and are extremely hard to find with Donald Sinta on them. The previous feedback left by the other person is obviously uneducated. I am offended by the tasteless comments of the peon.

only a jerk would let such hideous trash be released with his name on it. maybe it's all a joke...

his music, on this cd, is a perfect reflection of the man

Masterpiece.......2004-12-17
This album is absolutely stunning. I had a student of Clifford Leaman (when he was at furman university with Derek Parsons) as a teacher for highschool and i was introduced to this CD. Leaman is truly one of the most amazing Saxophonists in America today. As stated above, Kilstofte's Sonata for saxophone and piano, debuting on this album, is simply amazing. I only wish i can perform someday. The slaptongue is so tough to accomplish, he slit his tongue one performance and had to finish a recital with it. This album will NOT dissapoint.
Top-notch musicians making beautiful music.......2002-08-20
Pianist Derek Parsons (Furman University) and saxophonist Cliff Leaman (University of SC) team up to form the Ambassador Duo on this CD, which showcases some of the repertoire available to advanced saxophonists and their pianist friends. Leaman and Parsons work well together, and their synergy expresses itself through their playing. Every single work recorded here deserves to be praised for its legitimacy and musical value, but I will only point out in particular the Kilstofte Sonata, presented here for the first time. Mark Kilstofte is a young rising star in the composition world, having received more awards (including a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship, the Aaron Copland Award, the Charles Ives Scholarship, and the Frances and William Schuman Fellowship from the MacDowell Colony) than I can list or even shake a stick at. The Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano exemplifies Kilstofte's masterful control of compositional styles and techniques, including extended saxophone techniques (extreme altissimo, slap tongue), prepared piano, and external effects (one movement uses a Dr. Beat metronome for rhymthic obligato). For music theorists, this window dressing takes second place to the composer's emphasis on form and structore, which is quite classical in its rigid constructionism. Parsons and Leaman perform it (and all the pieces on the CD) with equanimity, technical facility, and most importantly a great deal of spirit and heart. Highly recommended!
Bravo!.......2000-10-03
This recording has some difficult pieces played beautifully. Leaman's tone is amazing and his command over the saxophone is astonishing. I recommend this CD to others!
