Quite simply : this is the greatest recording of the greatest Cello concerto that the world has ever known. Isserlis knows Schumann. His Cello bleeds the Davidsbundler Master into every passion-note. His collaborators here seem infected by the Schumann/Isserlis heavenly inspiration. How good is it beyond being the best? Well it makes Ma's terrific version sound almost mechanical! Once in a great while there exists such profound intimacy between a great composer and an artist that eternal magic shakes the firmament. Such a wedding is rare and to be treasured when found. The insouciant inclusion of the gourgeous
adagio of Bargiel, a Florestan/Eusibius protege, plus a "few extras", shows that Isserlis is not only in touch completely with Schumann, but in a total harmony that transcendentally and ethereally touches the soul as each lovng bar caresses the senses.
Everyone knows the Concerto and other cello pieces so I won't bother with any analysis except to say that from Zwickau to Endenich RAS is smiling as , perhaps, he never did in his life. Isserlis knows Schumann.And , yes : this is the greatest recording of the greatest Cello Concerto that the world has ever known.

mendelssohns master piece.......2001-02-22

i, as a musician understand the mood of mendelssohns octet. the octet i have just been working in has performed the IV movment of the piece recently, although it was not up to the tempo of how the wounder musicians that performed it, it was at a resonable standered and as i am only a 14 year old cello player this piece is extremly difficult. also at the momement our octet is working at playing bargiels octet as well, this is why i purchised this edition of the CD. as a group we analyse it down to every last detail, e.g the chord progresions. the mood has been captured well in this piece, for music lovers out there that enjoyed this CD i recomend listening to another octet by niels gade in f major op.17. also 2 sextets by brahms, g major op.36 and b flat major op.18. if you would like to write my email address is marianne3000@talk21.com although im only 14 young peoples opinions on classical music these days are hard to find, so we should be listened to. thank you. m

This is not the Barry White collection of Cello music to play for your girlfriend when she comes over. You will not be saying "Yeah, Baby!" to this mix.

Kind of funny that classical music types brand themselves as such brainy folks, it's a laugh this disc is such an off-the-mark mixed bag. -Is this the best they could do? -Or is this "Romantic" to a classical music person?

Good music, well performed, but Not Romantic -at -all.

This CD is just so-so.......2004-05-10

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by the CD. The pieces recorded in the CD don't work together. The performances of the cellists are even more unremarkable. If it's not because of Yo-Yo Ma, this CD probably won't even sell.

If you don't care about the performance or how different pieces work together, it might be OKAY for background music.

Don't buy if you are not buying this one to get the free shipment, like what I did. :p

If you're looking for a cello CD with small pieces of works, I'd hightly recommend "Le Violoncelle Du Siecle" by Mstislav Rostropovich. You'll love it.

Nice collection of works for the cello.......2002-06-06

Overall, this is a nice collection of previously recorded romantic cello works. While the album art leans heavily towards the "love" side of romance, the music does come from the Romantic period and early 20th century. To quote the liner notes: "This collection celebrates the emotional and technical range of the cello." While it does contain some very good recordings by excellent performers (Ma, Starker, Isserlis (one of my favorites), Piatigorsky, Harnoy), it does not contain complete recordings of the Elgar, Schumann, and Dvorak cello concertos. All are exceptional works for the cello (my favorite is Elgar, both to play and listen to), and it is a shame they are not included in their entirety. The addition of the Delius, Bruch and Bargiel pieces is nice. These are not too often heard, but are very nice works in their own right. As a cellist, I definitely recommend this album to anybody looking to learn more about the cello repertoire, and is nice background music if you appreciate the cello. If you're a cellist looking for recordings of some pieces on here, I only give this recording 3 stars, and recommend that you find the original album where these pieces were recorded, even if you have to spend a bit more money to get them all. That way, you have the complete pieces, in certain cases, plus the addition of other repertoire that might exist on the originals recordings.

Hidden Treasures.......2001-07-06

Caught in the musical wars of the 19th Century between the New German School of Wagner and Liszt on one side and the traditionalists of the Leipzig Conservatory led by Brahms and Joachim on the other, Woldemar Bargiel (1828-1897) pleased neither side and was castigated by the critics of his time. History has not yet seen fit to reverse this injustice, but hopefully the emergence of new recordings of his works are a sign of greater recognition to come. These two piano trios are delightful evocations of the Romantic spirit, tuneful in the manner of Schubert and complex enough in construction to repay frequent listening. The Op. 37 trio in particular is really exciting, with the Trio Parnassus in great form. The recording on the audiophile MDG Gold label is impeccable. Thanks to Evan Wilson for spotting this disc and writing the first review.

Delightful Romantic trios.......2001-01-04

Woldemar Bargiel is one of those composers who worked in the shadow of Schumann and Brahms and as a result is considered unoriginal and "second-rate." It's sad how musical "politics" of this type relegates wonderful music like these trios to the dustbins of history.

Written in 1857 and 1870 respectively, these two trios do not break formal ground but that is about the only bad thing you can say about them. They are tuneful, well put together and have a real feel for the possibilities of the medium. If you like the music of Bruch or, perhaps, Dvorak (without the Czech accent) you'll love these.

The Trio Parnassus, which seems to be MDG's house trio, approach these pieces with respect for their high quality and musical worth and enjoy themselves throughout. They don't condescend to them or overplay them trying to sell them and both pieces bloom wonderfully. MDG's sound is up to their high standard.
