    Album Description

"Few horn players produce such a luscious sound as David Pyatt." -- Gramophone

In addition to his many radio broadcasts for the BBC, David Pyatt has recorded frequently and was named a Young Artist of the Year by Gramophone. Gordon Jacob's Horn Concerto is considered by some the best of the nineteen wind concertos of this prolific composer. Malcolm Arnold, one of Britain's most beloved composers, was a student of Jacob's, as was Ruth Gipps, both of whom are represented on this CD. York Bowen's Horn Concerto was premiered by the legendary hornist Dennis Brain in 1956.

4 out of 5 stars Music from the empire.......2007-06-01

From the 1700s to the mid-1900s, Britian ruled most of the world at some time or another. Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars The British and their music.......2007-05-30

This CD offers an excellent sampler of traditional British music. If you have watched Chariots Of Fire you will recognize Jerusalem By Parry(the final scene at Harold Abraham's funeral). This is a beautiful selection. The Tam O'Shanter Overture dispells the often unjustified characterization of the stuffy Englishman and is a rousing piece. All in all a very enjoyable CD. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes.......2005-06-29

It is a good choice of tunes played often in England. The quality of recording is good, the choice of tunes is good too and the orchestration is good too. It is a good CD to buy.

    4 out of 5 stars A beautiful CD!.......2001-12-16

This one is for all those who want a splendid introduction to the music this CD offers. It would make a lovely Christmas present for the discriminating listener. My favorite is "Jerusalem!"

Although most of this set is devoted to major cello concertos (Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Dvorák, Schumann, Haydn) that Du Pré played so well, perhaps the most treasurable recording is one of two Beethoven cello sonatas with the pianist Stephen Bishop (Kovacevich). Recorded very early in her career, these show Du Pré at her most eloquent, the early promise of a great career so cruelly interrupted. This set includes most of the cellist's best recordings. Too bad it's not 10 times the size. If the cellist's passion occasionally seems excessive, at least it's the right kind of flaw to have. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mostly valuable for the sonatas & suites.......2002-07-02

Although Jackie du Pre's playing in the Elgar, Delius and Schoenberg concerti was superb, I for one simply find nothing to admire in that music. Perhaps this is my fault, perhaps not, but in general there are so many superb recordings of the Haydn and Dvorak concerti that only the sentiments surrounding her decline into MS and early death recommend them.

On the other hand, the recordings of the Chopin, Beethoven and other sonatas in the second 3 discs of this set are among the most moving recordings ever made. Jackie never had quite the golden tone or perfect technique of Feuermann or Yo-Yo Ma, and this shows itself more in the Bach unaccompanied cello suites where she plays a few scratchy-sounding turns, but the deep-down love and emotional commitment of her playing always communicated itself effectively. In short, then, I recommend this set for the sonatas & suites, but if you also enjoy these concerto recordings, you will love it all.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2001-04-22

this is a wonderful recording of some of the best cello music played by one of the worlds best cello players, the late jacqueline du pre. jackie had magic in her fingertips and listening to these recordings is pure joy, one of the best set I had the chance to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Great record of Great cellist at Great budget price.......2000-11-04

The collection dosen't have Brahms's Cello Sonatas. But you picture her portrait by these 6 CDs( The cost is 7 dollars or less per one CD ). If you don't know what kind of cellist she was--yet, I want you to get it.

You would meet extraordinary emitted passion by Du Pre in Elgar( needlees to say, it is one of her most famous performance), Saint-Saens, Dovrak( in spite of unskillful conducting of Barenboim), Schumann. The set has not only her famous performance of the Concertos in disk 1-3, but also various Sonatas( Barenboim makes excellent piano playing in good harmony with his wife more than support) in disk 4-6.

Furthermore, the Bach's Cello Suite No.1 and No.2, as her only solo performance in this collection, are very interesting. Its passionate Bach(!!) is certainly like Du Pre.

Thanks EMI FRANCE for the great work!!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Great Cello Music.......2000-07-26

This collection, composed of the great works for the cello, is a must have in any serious classical music fan's library. It is an even better collection for the "newbie" to the genre. Jacqueline du Pre was undoubtedly one of the greatest artist of the century and her passion is well documented in this collection. Just get it...if you like classical music...you'll like this collection and the price is great too. What's to lose?

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Indispensable! So why only four stars..?.......2000-03-19

This is definitely worth getting, and Amazon's price is right. Du Pre was one of the greatest ever (Yo-Yo Ma now owns her cello, in case any of you play Classical Music Trivial Pursuit), and I cry inwardly when I think of her early death. The Elgar Concerto alone on this set is enough to justify the purchase price. After she died, several "name" conductors vowed they would never perform or record it again with anybody, so strong was their memory of her. So why only four stars here? Two reasons: some of these performances are with hubby Daniel Barenboim conducting, and they just aren't quite in the same league as the other efforts. Just compare the Barbirolli Haydn and the Barenboim Haydn to see what I mean: both are slow-tempoed, and neither would be my top-drawer choice. But Barbirolli *almost* makes it work, and has a certain perverse logic, whereas DB is just dull and colorless and square. The second defect is the remastered sound, which oftentimes is not very good. Sure these are "historic" recordings, but they're not that old, most are stereo. Still, the sound is flat and clipped at the high end. This should not dissade anyone from getting this set, however. Just don't expect a sonic demo disc. You will get thrilling cello playing across a broad selection of repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04

I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!

Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.

Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.

Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.

Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.

Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great First CD.......2000-06-22

After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars The sublime collection.......2000-06-18

I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.

Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.

This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.

This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28

This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

Malcolm Arnold, like Dmitri Shostakovich, wrote a wide range of music, including music for film. But while Shostakovich's film music is generally looked down upon (having been mostly commissioned by the state), Arnold's film music aspires to the same level of seriousness (and delight) as his "important" works. Most familiar here is the music from The Bridge Over the River Kwai, which features Kenneth Alford's "Colonel Bogey's March." Fortunately these works are all orchestrated by the late Christopher Palmer; they would otherwise likely have languished in obscurity. Fans of Arnold's music will want this exceptional collection. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars A Walk Down Memory Lane.......2007-01-18

I purchased this CD about three years ago primarily for the Bridge on the River Kwai music. I had bought the original soundtrack album very soon after seeing the film (in 1957). The thought of having another copy recorded with modern-day technology made the purchase irresistable. One slightly negative (for me) comment about the music is that this is not a re-recording of the original soundtrack. This is a concert suite arranged by Christopher Palmer. The music is "basically" the same. Mr. Palmer has re-arranged much of it and the sequences of events are out of sync with the original. Apart from these differences the music is still awsome sounding! The other pieces on the disk are all well worth listening to for Arnold enthusiasts. Whistle Down the Wind is charming. The Sound Barrier has that Arnold juxtapositioning of the stern and dramatic with the bubbling and warm-and-fuzzy tunes that he is known for. The Hobson's Choice music has a lot of Arnold's humor in it. Upon first hearing, I thought the music was rather "corny" but repeated listenings have allowed me to find the deeper things in it. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is pure Arnold from beginning to end. The grandiose London Prelude opening, the tender Romantic Interlude section, the stirring and ominous Mountain Crossing, and the "This Old Man" tune at the end make this piece, as well as the entire album, a joy to listen to. If you are a Malcom Arnold fan and would like a sampling of his film music, this CD should meet your needs very well. Five stars!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing! .......2006-11-16

This music is amazing! I gotta admit that I bought this Cd mainly because of the tracks from "The Bridge on the River Kwai", but all the other tracks are also very good. My personal favorites are "The Bridge on the River Kwai March"( last track of the Bridge on the River Kwai section of this Cd), the Overture/Shoe Ballet from "Hobson's Choice", and the last track on this Cd, the "Happy Ending: Mountain Crossing-the children". That track is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. One comment on the orchestra that is playing it all: They are great. They play really clean, stay on the beat, and I am sure that they play the music just like Sir Malcolm Arnold intended it to sound. The London Symphony Orchestra is doing a great job on this Cd. This Cd rocks and well deserves five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Film Scores.......2001-04-17

Malcolm Arnold's film scores stand on a par with his concert music; they are of equally high quality. Of the five films represented on this CD, the most prominent would have to be the 1957 best picture Oscar winner, The Bridge on the River Kwai. But, having said that, it would at most have to be considered as first among equals, as the other scores represented are also well-done and well-performed. For film score buffs, this CD should be a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Jolly Arnold jinks.......2001-01-17

This album will be a delight to baby boomers like me who were taken to the movies during the late fifties and sixties to see these films. The films seem a little dated now but the scores of Arnold bring out tear jerking emotion, nostalgic pangs and jolly japes, all in the blink of an eye. The heavyweight David Lean 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' item is probably the movie you are most likely to see repeated on TV; who can forget the defiant and physically broken Alec Guiness standing up to the Japanese Camp Commander? Yet, paradoxically, although the Colonel Bogey March was very popular when the movie was relaeased, it probably will not be the most played item on the CD if you buy it. Arnold's fecund imagination comes into its own with the 'Hobson's choice' with the brilliant orchestral character sketches of the grumpy and drunken Charles Laughton character on the deep brass, or the thrilling optimism as our hero sudenly realises he can make it. The 'Whistle Down the Wind' offerings are sheer musical poetry that underline the pathos we all feel of our lost childhood vision of Jesus and the haunting theme stays in your head a long while afterwards. The 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' and 'Sound Barrier' items are wonderful and will be enjoyed again and again as Arnold's imagination jumps around the orchestra in its different tones. A brilliant buy!

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

3 out of 5 stars So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

These modern examples of the "classical music ethnic dance craze" are simply adorable. Their inspiration comes from those two great Romantic compositions, Brahms's Hungarian Dances and Dvorák's Slavonic Dances; and like those two vivacious and popular works, these jolly little pieces helped put their composer on the musical map. Arnold began his career as a trumpeter, composed music for several films (including The Bridge on the River Kwai), and has since gone on to create an imposing orchestral legacy. But for many people, he's still the guy who wrote the English Dances, and they make the perfect introduction to his expertly crafted and brilliantly orchestrated musical universe. --David Hurwitz

The late Bryden Thomson turns in a wonderful--and in places nearly heartbreaking--performance of four sets of dances composed by Arnold, one of the most prolific contemporary British composers. The best of these pieces are the English Dances and the Four Scottish Dances, which capture all the color of their specific regions without losing any of Arnold's distinct personality--and doggedly romantic touch. The rich Chandos sound has never seemed better or more appropriate. --Paul Cook

    5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-02-09

Malcolm Arnold's many sets of Anglo-Saxon Dances are fun, light-hearted pieces that capture the folk music of the many cultures of the United Kingdom. This CD features the English, Scottish, Cornish, and Irish Dances (only missing the Welsh). My favorites are the more popular English and Scottish Dances, but the Irish and Cornish are still enjoyable to listen to. These pieces capture melodies that will sound very familiar and that you'll be surprised you've never heard before. After listening to these tunes, you'll catch yourself gaily whistling a Scottish reel.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkably moving music.......2001-11-17

I had no idea what I was getting when I bought this CD; it has become one of my most listened-to albums. Arnold had a genius for romantic melody that moves the soul. I believe his fame will grow in the 21st century as the silliness of modern atonal music is forgotten and the eternal values of melody and beauty regain their place in western culture.

Led in great part by Mitch Miller's recording of "The River Kwai March/Colonel Bogey March," this soundtrack became part of the mass-consciousness of the 1950s and following decades. The infectious and defiant whistling of the British prisoners of war is only one aspect of the film, though, standing alongside a score by Malcolm Arnold that (although winning an Academy Award) became overshadowed by Miller's commercial success. Often wading in folly as much as doom, Arnold views the adversities and will of the POWs in a way akin to Mickey's battle with the brooms in Fantasia. "Shear's Escape" floats in the life-and-death realism of the situation yet seems to find the playfulness and romantic abandon of a walk through a forest. "Overture," in its simultaneously laborious and stirring tones, prefers the stark representation of menace and captivity, orchestral sections battling one another as they search for a means of escape yet, in the end, find they must submit. And standing among it all is K. Alford's "Colonel Bogey March," the whistling tribute to another Disney film score that has always seemed to alleviate even the worst days of drudgery at a cruel job. --James Stockstill

4 out of 5 stars pluses and minuses.......2001-12-11

A remastering of one the treasured albums of my youth.

Among the pluses: The original album featured the Mitch Miller arrangement of Colonel Bogey, whistled professionally, with the River Kwai March countermelody brought in by discrete steps verse by verse, then taken out the same regular way. In the new print, that is pushed to the end, and the version from the sound track restored. A wonderfully raggedy whistling of Colonel Bogey, with the River Kwai March swelling and overwhelming the whistling as the camera focuses on Nicholson's pride in his regiment, cut off when the camera shows Saito watching.

Among the minuses: Despite the claims of remastering the actual film music, the dynamics are substantially more limited than I remember from the theatrical presentation. Example: The scene "Nicholson's victory," in addition to standing on end every hair you possess, lifts you 4 inches off your seat, despite all the messages from your rational mind that the victory is completely nuts. A big part of that in the theater was the *explosion* of sound from the orchestra breaking into the introduction of the River Kwai March, as Nicholson's regiment break ranks to lift him to their shoulders. On the new CD, however, the loudness of that explosion is not something you'd remark if you didn't know what to expect.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fantastic music by Malcom Arnold.......2001-10-25

I saw this film a couple weeks ago, and I thought the music was just wonderful. I saw that the library had the 1989 Varese Sarabande copy, and when I got it I listened to it over and over again. I don't know how long this cd is, but mine was only 34 minutes long, because I only had the nine tracks, which was all I needed. The other three tracks look like they just have re-recordings of the Colonel Bogey march. But I'm sure it will please the next person who buys this soundtrack. This is just a beautiful soundtrack, I suggest anyone to buy it and put it with their other soundtracks from David Lean's films.

4 out of 5 stars Memory Lane revisited.......2007-04-11

This is a very nice CD collection that I enjoy very much. They are original recordings so you have to be aware that a couple of the older songs sound scratchy just like they did when you put the record on the record player. It was a shame they couldn't get a crisper sound with all the new technology but it does make you aware how the sound quality has improved over the years. This would make a great gift to anyone over 50. I put mine in the car and just sing away and before I know it I am at my destination. This would be a great collection to take on a trip.

    5 out of 5 stars YOUNGER THAN 70 BUT..........2007-04-10

Even though I am not 70 years old, I knew most of the music, and this collection is excellent. I chose some songs and put them on my i-pod. This collection is worth every penny. Enjoy it!
