This remarkable, unique opera, premiered in the Netherlands in 1999, is a beautiful, lyrical piece of work. It takes place in 1672, when the artist Johannes Vermeer left his home in Delft for two weeks to advise a collector on the purchase of some Italian paintings. The opera's form--thoroughly anti-dramatic--involves letters sent to Vermeer (who never appears or reacts) by his real mother-in-law, his real wife, and a fictional model. There are 18 letters, and each of the women represening them has a unique voice and attitude. The model, Saskia, has music that sits high in the soprano voice and is always sung sweetly; the mother-in-law, Maria, is a mezzo, and her middle register provides warmth and caring; Vermeer's wife, Catharina, another soprano, sings lovingly and passionately. The letters are relatively mundane. They describe the health and well-being (or not) of the children, domestic life, and so forth, and all of them yearn for Vermeer's return. So where's the drama? Well, 1672 was a catastrophic year for the Netherlands. Catholic-Protestant battling tore the country apart, there was an explosion in Delft, the French invaded, two important statesman were murdered, and finally, the Dutch flooded their own country as a defense against the French, ruining the country's economy and Vermeer's livelihood. These events burst into the narrative and the music, which is simply lovely and gentle most of the time, although it becomes dissonant and aggressive. Andriessen's score is interrupted by electronic music and sounds composed by Michel an der Aa. If all this, with the libretto by Peter Greenaway, sounds odd and difficult to take, it is only odd. The string playing is light and Baroque-flavored (and there is prominent use of harpsichord), while harps and cimbalom create a gentler world. And the final all-encompassing flood is as impressive in its cataclysmic grandeur as the simpler, domestic scenes are charming. As great drama, onstage, I'm not certain of how this would play; on CD it is a joy to behold. --Robert Levine

      Album Description

Writing to Vermeer is the sixth Nonesuch release from Louis Andriessen, the most highly regarded contemporary composer working in the Netherlands today, an influential and inconoclastic figure whose work has been presented on stages throughout the world. The multimedia opera contrasts the alluring stillness and warm glow of the domestic scenes painted by Dutch master Johannes Vermeer with the clangorous political, social and economic turmoil or the encroaching outside world during the late 1700's.

I can't imagine why Mr. Andriessen's new opera Writing to Vermeer is garnering so much praise -- maybe "you had to be there." On CD, however, it's a grating, annoying, and self-consciously postmodern trial to endure... in fact, I finally had to just give up about halfway through the second disc. Life is too short, after all.

5 out of 5 stars Can minimalists repeat themselves?.......2006-12-17

When I first discovered the music of Louis Andriessen, I suddenly understood more clearly why so many contemporary composers (esp. those who'd worked with him) sounded the way they did. Andriessen brings a European edge to the repetitive, jazz & rock tinged music we call "Minimal" in the USA. I ran out and bought just about everything available on CD. Listening to this new opera, however, I'm reminded that every composer has a tendency to repeat themselves. While there are some absolutely stunning moments in this piece (especially those that combine music with concrete sound) I also found the all-female voices got taxing about 90 minutes in. An opera, after all, is a theatrical experience, and I bet this piece (with staging and projections by Peter Greenaway) was dazzling to watch. Where the hell's the DVD?

What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

This is quite a nice disc of French music concerned with the "Ralliement": the resurgence of interest in Romish mysticism in the twilight years of the 19th Century and the early years of the 20th C.

This Ralliement roughly began with Baudelaire and continued with many of the artists, musicians, and writers of the Fin de Siecle and Belle Epoque.

Van Oosten is a great musician, and has selected some nice tracks for this disc.

Anyone who knows Louis Andriessen's music won't be disappointed in this crisp, hard-driving, spare music. The cascades of notes, the obssessive slithering around tight clusters of notes, and the pointillistic rhythms have the hallmarks of minimalism, but it seems an innacurate label for pieces so jam-packed full of notes. And there's moments of humor, surprisingly, if you know where to listen. Sincere, virtuoso performances. Recommended.

        2 out of 5 stars Too Minimal.......2004-04-14

Minimalism has had its share of great, truly reductionist works: Glass' "Two Pages", Reich's "Pendulum Music", Bryars' "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" - but none of these failed to capture the imagination of the captive audience.

Unlike these significant works, Louis Andriessen's works represented on this disc (although performed quite well by the now-infamous Bang On A Can) go almost nowhere with the very little material present. While the other composers took highly limited material and turned it into something way more worthwhile than the sum of its part (notice I didn't pluralize this word...), Andriessen uses the same amount of material and succeeds only at utterly boring the audience.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE minimalist music (Glass, Reich, Adams, Riley, Gorecki, Part, Nyman, Tavener, Bryars, Duckworth, Lansky at times, etc...) but I just don't think this disc lives up to the other great works of the genre.

To be fair, track 1, Workers' Union, actually travels pretty well, but it outstays its welcome pretty badly. Hoketus and Hout, although initially intriguing, lose any sense of ingenuity or emotion once you get a few minutes into them.

Should you pick up this disc?
        Yes.

        Will you enjoy it?
Not as much as you could have had BOAC picked more musical
        works.

Overall, I would skip this disc until you absolutely need it for your collection...otherwise check out some of Andriessen's other music...I'm sure you'll be quite satisfied with anything but these pieces!

I will just add a similar comment to the others posted. Even if you don't like some of Louis Andriessen's music, you could very well love this. In my opinion, one of the most unconventional and strikingly beautiful pieces I have ever heard. As a jazz native, I sometimes have some issues with the boogie-woogie movement, but I assume (hope) that it is completely tongue-in-cheek, in which case it is hilarious simply because of its audaciousness.

        Listen to this stuff.

Part 1 will wake you up, Part 2 will make you think, Part 3 will get you dancin', and Part 4 will make you cry! This is music you have to hear to believe. Andriessen flouts just about every convention of music, contemporary and traditional, to stupendous effect. Who says you can't repeat the same chord 144 times? Who says a boogie woogie can't be polytonal? Who says the inventory of equipment for a Dutch ship can't be an opera/drama text? Who says the Contrabass Clarinet can't take solos? Who says you can't write a five minute passage for two anvils? If you're not interested by now, let me add that even if you don't normally go for minimalism, you'll go for this amazing theatre piece -- it features, in addition to some of the most powerful triple forte music ever written, some of the most amazingly conceived slow and quiet music too-- Part 2: Hadewijch might even be called spiritual... and Madame Curie's diary entires, interlaced with the most poignant glistening chord, definitely have tear-jerker potential. There is something in this music that has more life than anything I've heard recently. It's a burning energy combined with a genuine craft, and superior technique. Wonderful washes of sound, huge powerful blasts of energy. This CD made me go out and buy EVERYTHING that Andriessen had to offer. He is one of the greatest composers of our time. I highly reccomend this music, but add it is not for the faint of heart...it gets pretty deep :)

5 out of 5 stars A monumental work by an incredible creative voice.......1999-04-02

Listeners unfamiliar with Andriessen's music may hesitate to invest in this two-disc set, but it is perhaps the best introduction to this unfortunately underappreciated composer. Andriessen brings together seemingly disparate elements--from jazz and rock to neo-medievalism, Stravinskian rhythmic inventiveness and Messaien-like mysticism--and molds them into his own intensely incisive musical personality. De Materie contains some of the most captivating examples of "minimalism" I've ever heard: the luminous, hypnotically slow unfolding of Part 4 is genuinely otherworldly, while the 144 accelerating fortissimo chords which open Part 1 create an exhilirating, terrifying "granite wall" of sound. Other sections, especially the bold choral declamation in Part 1 and much of "De Stijl" seem highly anti-minimalist in their rhythmic and harmonic intricacy. The performance, under the direction of Reinbert de Leeuw, is consistently forceful (though I think I detected some insecurity in the quick accelerandos and retardandos of Part 1) and the sound quality is uniformly excellent. I recommend this set without reservation and anticipate future Andriessen releases, as he is still very much with us.
