Book Description
Available January 2005
For the past forty years Beer and Johnston have been the uncontested leaders in the teaching of undergraduate engineering mechanics. Their careful presentation of content, unmatched levels of accuracy, and attention to detail have made their texts the standard for excellence. The revision of their classic Mechanics of Materials features an updated art and photo program as well as numerous new and revised homework problems.
The text's superior Online Learning Center (www.mhhe.com/beermom4e) includes an extensive Self-paced, Mechanics, Algorithmic, Review and Tutorial (S.M.A.R.T.), created by George Staab and Brooks Breeden of The Ohio State University, that provides students with additional help on key concepts. The custom website also features animations for each chapter, lecture powerpoints, and other online resources for both instructors and students.

Mech Engineering.......2007-02-13
This book was required for my Mechanics of Materials course in my major of Mechanical Engineering. The readings and examples are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. SuperSaving shipping rocks!
Mechanics of Materials review.......2007-01-04
I needed another copy of this book and it has been helpful to have it in my library.
Poor answer key.......2006-02-09
The book explained the concepts of the subject well enough, but the number of typos in the problems and in the answer key led to many hours of frustration. I was often under the impression I was doing something wrong, only to find out the givens in a problem had incorrect prefixes, or some other error.
Good Coverage of Complex Material.......2006-02-01
This book provides the reader with a good basic understanding of the subject. I recommend it to the apprentice engineer or designer or technician wanting to gain a good understanding of the basics of how loads and materials affect the shape of structures and machine design.
Great Great book!.......2006-01-21
This book is great! it has a lot of examples that follow right after the text explaining it. its great for those who want to teach themselves and great for classes. I have also used to reference a few times while working on projects.

Incomplete recovery from grief can have a lifelong negative effect on your capacity for happiness. Drawing from their own histories, as well as from others, the authors illustrate what grief is and how it is possible to recover and regain energy and spontaneity. Based on a proven program, now extensively revised, The Grief Recovery Handbook offers grievers the specific actions needed to complete the grieving process and accept loss. For those ready to regain a sense of aliveness, the principles outlined here make this a life-changing handbook.
Customer Reviews:
Very good and popular resource... (review by personal coach).......2007-06-15
This book is an excellent resource for those who are grieving any kind of loss. It provides an action plan that is gentle and provides direction during a difficult, confusing and often disorienting time. I have used this resource with my clients and I know many other therapists who regard it highly and use it in their practices. If you get this, I would also recommend the classic On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss. After a big loss of any kind, I think it is very important to take action, but also make sense of the loss. Both resources I mention in this review will help with making meaning out of the loss and getting reoriented.
An "okay" approach.......2007-06-02
The book has some good ideas and points to offer grievers. It is my opinion and now, unfortunately, my experience that recovery issues and circumstances of loss vary by the loss.
To play "catch all" with death and divorce wasn't particularly helpful to me as I wasn't divorced. I found it difficult to make an empathetic connection why divorce was similar to death and I suppose the reverse is true. I didn't fail in my marriage. If by reading this, you think I'm judging divorce or suggesting that people who divorce are lesser or greater than me, I'm not. I just think the loss and recovery issues are too dissimilar to be combined within one book.
What was helpful involved writing a letter to the person I lost. Recommendations to write a journal and there was also good advice on not making any "major life" changes for at least a year. I've done and am following that advice to some success.
Beyond that, there is a mindset among practitioners that group therapy is helpful and this book, though there is room for an individual journey, is built around a group therapy approach. If you like or respond to group work, more power to you. I just never have found airing my dirty sheets among relative strangers did much for me.
To each his/her own, what works for one person so motivated to write a book about his/her experiences isn't universally right or wrong for other people and I picked up some admonishing for those of us pursuing our own journey.
So, if like me and your spouse died and you don't have a penchant for group therapy or facilitated group discussions about grief and loss, look for another book.
The Grief Recovery Handbook by John W. James and Russell Friedman.......2007-05-13
I had previously read the book Grief Recovery Handbook and ordered copies to give to others. This is probably the best book/program for anyone who is suffering from the pain of grief, regardless of the reason for the grief. The book covers death, divorce, and many other losses causing grief. Most people do not know how to deal with grief and though will meaning often say the wrong things to their loved ones who are grieving. This book is not only for someone recovering from grief, but it also explains what you should say and not say to someone who is grieving. My personal grief resulted from the death of my wife of 38 years who died of cancer.
The order came promptly with no problems as expected.
Required reading for anyone who has suffered a loss.......2007-04-14
Having an action plan that guides you through the stages of grief is much needed. Too often when we suffer a loss we are expected to rebound and recover quickly. Not taking the time to work through our feelings is dangerous to our mental health. It is important to go through the necessary steps to healing. Divorce is one area where most of us fail to properly grieve and mourn the death of our marriage. This book is a must read for anyone coping with the loss of a loved one.
Seven Secrets to a Successful Divorce
Be where you are and be where you're going........2007-03-01
This is a non-threatening user-friendly book that helps the reader both understand the experience of grief and find ways to recover from its impact.

Customer Reviews:
i wish it were better.......2002-12-17
the other residents in my program are a lot more critical of this text than i. i agree that it is very inconsistent. some chapters good, some very poor. all do not give a good idea of "outcomes", part of the intent and title of the text. it is mostly a " this is how i do it as i am famous" read. however, i must be fair and admit this is probably the most complete recent text on comprehensive plastic surgery. i do not regret buying it.
A basic, yet helpful text........2001-01-27
An excellent reference for first year residents in plastic surgery, or other surgical residents who want to explore the fascinating world of plastic surgery. The third "great compilation" of the plastic surgery knowledge, who substitutes McCarthy's text ,yet McCarthy's is quite more extensive, but a little out time (1990). This could be any plastic surgeon's pillow book...
The definative text.......2000-10-13
This is without a question the definative text of plastic surgery. Just look at the authors. Current comprehensive, and well organized. This is a must own. This book replaces my entire plastic surgery library.

Book Description
Fr. John McCloskey has become a famous "convert maker" in the power corridors close to the White House and various government agencies. Having run the well-known Catholic Information Center in the heart of Washington, DC since 1998 and ending in the beginning of 2004, brought McCloskey in direct contact with numerous well-known and lesser known Washington figures who have been directly instructed, encouraged and assisted into the Catholic Church by this priest-evangelist.</p>
This work is a joint effort of McCloskey and Russell Shaw, a well-known Catholic author and speaker who also works in the DC area. Based on the great success and influence that Father McCloskey has had in helping instruct many converts to Catholicism, especially numerous high profile DC figures, this book is a powerful combination of the methods, theology, and theories that McCloskey uses in his evangelization efforts.</p>
In addition to his compelling insights on how to teach or share the faith in a winning, inspiring way, this work includes the contributions of several dozen converts of Fr. McCloskey who give their own moving testimonies of why they converted to Catholicism, and how that life-changing journey happened for each of them. Many of their writings reveal extraordinary perception regarding the workings of grace and the dynamics of the spiritual life.</p>
Customer Reviews:
The call of the laity.......2007-06-18
Drawing on his vast pastoral experience, including his time as Director of the Catholic Information Center in downtown DC from 1998 to 2004, Father McCloskey has distilled in this book (written together with Russell Shaw) some pointed reflections on how best to serve as God's instruments in the conversion of others.
The book starts from a twofold premise. Firstly, in our "age of the laity", the specific call of lay people is to be apostles to the world rather than crowd the sanctuary. (Father McCloskey's "Sermon for Our Times", on page 58 of the book, is a forceful invitation to avoid the risk of "clericalizing" the lay person, a danger against which para. 45 of the 2004 Instruction "Redemptionis sacramentum" by the Roman Congregation for Divine Worship called to a sane relationship of complementarity between the cleric and the lay person, each one with his complementary gifts.) Secondly, effective apostolate is not a light endeavor but (as Father McCloskey writes on page 91) an investment into spiritual growth by the evangelizer himself/herself: it "must flow from prayer and mortification and participation in the sacraments - from one's own ongoing ascetical struggle to put on Jesus Christ."
On the basis of these premises, Father McCloskey shares his insights, with the help of actual stories by converts, into how best we can help others to have a personal encounter with Christ.
The book is enriched by an appendix containing the "Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan", a list of solid works for Christian formation compiled by Father McCloskey while a Director of the Catholic Information Center.

Belisima.......2005-01-11
This is a very well executed book. The pictures chosen are perfect and the authors do a commendable job with the research. The book gives an exhaustive cross section of Mr. Popes work and one gets a real appreciation of his talent. The book publisher deserves credit for creating such a finely made book, one never doubts they are perusing an expensive book. The only qualm I have with the book is that they didn't do like the authors of the book on Delano and Aldrich and include some fine current color pictures to compliment the wonderful vintage B&W photos, that would have made it perfect, but this is close enough. Congradulations to the authors for this fine piece of work.

Book Description
<blockquote> <p class="quote">"Russell Lee's sense of the possibilities of photography was almost as generous, open, and democratic as photography itself. His appetite as a spectator was as wide as the prairie, and his sympathy for his fellows appeared seamless."</p> <p class="source">John Szarkowski, from the foreword</p> </blockquote>
Russell Lee is widely acclaimed as one of the most outstanding documentary photographers of the twentieth century. His images of American life during the Great Depression, created for the Farm Security Administration between 1936 and 1942, hold a preeminent place in one of history's best-known and most useful photographic collections. This famous body of work demonstrates Lee's extraordinary ability to reveal the humanity of his subjects and to become a part of the communities he photographed. It also displays Lee's superior technical abilityhis legendary skill in using a flash enabled Lee to create some of the finest candids in the history of photography.</p>
Russell Lee Photographs is the first book to show the full range and quality of Lee's entire oeuvre beyond the FSA work, as well as the first major publication of his photographs since F. Jack Hurley's 1978 book, <cite>Russell Lee: Photographer</cite> (long out of print). The book contains over 140 images, 101 of which have never appeared in book publication. The photographs are grouped into suites of images that represent all of Lee's important, non-FSA subjects: early work from New York City and Woodstock; the Spanish-speaking people of Texas; the mentally and physically disabled; political campaigns, including the Kennedy-Johnson campaign of 1960; commercial work for chemical and other companies; a portfolio of images of Italy; and quintessential scenes of small-town life.</p>
Setting Lee's images in context are a foreword by John Szarkowski, one of America's leading photography curators and critics, and an introduction by Lee's friend and fellow photography educator J. B. Colson, who offers fascinating personal insights into Lee's life and career.</p>
Considering Russell Lee's stature in American photography, it is surprising that much of his post-FSA work is unknown to the public and has been seldom seen even in the photography community. By making these images readily available for the first time, this book gives long-overdue recognition to the full range and excellence of Lee's work. Russell Lee Photographs is the essential book on this major American photographer.</p>
Customer Reviews:
Images for heart and mind.......2007-06-25
A wonderful large format and beautifully produced book of 140 photos by Russell Lee made more worthy because 101 of them have not been published together in book form. Lee is rightly famous for his FSA work though none of that output is included here. Instead there are photos from the Texas political scene from 1935 to 1965, Italy in 1960 where he did a portfolio of work commissioned by the Texas Quarterly, Saudi Arabia in 1955. The majority of the photos are of the US with plenty showing small town life.
I'm not convinced that the absence of FSA work was a wise editorial choice, clearly this aspect of his career has been well documented in other books but perhaps in this one there could have been a chapter devoted to Lee's extensive 1940 work in Pie Town, New Mexico. The photos of this small town seem to be the high point of his career, also he was experimenting with color at this time (seventeen shots are shown in Bound for Glory: America in Color 1939-43) and I hope some publisher would consider a book just on Lee's Pie Town photos.
'Russell Lee Photographs' compares very favorably with Jack Hurley's 1978 'Russell Lee Photographer' (ISBN 0871001500) though the reproduction, with 250+dpi gives a much better showing that the 200dpi used in the Hurley book, which has 121 photos and a more comprehensive biography of Lee.
Both books celebrated the work of a dedicated humanist photographer whose work will equally stimulate your heart and mind.

Perhaps the best of the best.......2007-06-11
Russell Lee was one of the group of photographers that were assembled by the government during the Great
Depression to document and publicize the poverty that had hit the heart of the nation, and the ways - through
various federal programs - those that were hurting the worst could be helped. Today, that group, which included Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Marion Post Wolcott, Eudora Welty and many others who worked for the Farm Security Administration and other agencies, has been recognized as perhaps the greatest collection of documentary photographers ever gathered. Russell Lee was one of many, some of whom became much more famous, but who was recognized by them as perhaps the best. This collection strengthens that
reputation as the best of the best. He wasn't fancy, and took what he saw - he did not pose subjects for his
camera, but shot the truth. This book covers not only the Depression years, but continues with photographs in other countries, politics and of course, his chosen home state of Texas. This book is getting a lot of attention - well deserved. Center For American History and University of Texas, Hardcover, with over 140 b/w photographs, some never previously published.

We love Frances!.......2007-01-12
My husband's family grew up on the recordings of the Frances stories, read by Glynis Johns (sp). Entertaining for children and adults alike!
Frances Audio Collection.......2007-01-09
I was delighted to see this offered for sale. My daughters loved the Frances stories when they were young and I bought the CDs before a vacation trip we all took. The girls and their children enjoyed the stories in the car and this led to some great discussions. We shared the CDs among the cars as we drove to the beach. They loved listening to the recording and still borrow the CDs to keep at their house to listen to while falling asleep. What a great collection. It was a big hit with the grandkids.
Frances Audio Collection.......2006-06-28
My 6 year old son loves the Francis stories, even though he is usually more attracted to stories like Henry Huggins, or Mouse Tales; etc. However, he was a bit put off by the change in narrators between the Francis audio collection and a different Francis tape and book. The audio collection employs an older English lady with a rather coarse voice for it's narration.
He wrinkled his nose and said "who's that"? when listening for the first time. I think he prefers the pleasant voice narration on "A Bargain for Francis", and some other Francis selections.
Frances Rocks!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-27
My four year old has loved the Frances books since she was two; this CD is absolutely perfect and she asks for it at least once a week, and finally we have a sort-of tune for all of wonderful Frances' songs. PS if you are a real Frances fan as a parent, check out Mr. Hoban's "Riddley Walker" adult novel. Trust me, you will love it, and in 10 or 15 years, your current Frances fan will too.
Not what I thought it would be...but it's still good!.......2005-07-20
I was so thrilled to find this collection. As a little girl, I had the books along with the records. The records were great...especially when Frances would sing...and the background music and sound effects were magical. When I played this tape, I was disappointed. There is no music or sound effects...just a woman with an English accent that reads the story to you...and she reads very quickly. The songs are sung differently than they were on the records but the more and more I listen to this tape, the more I am just happy to have something that reminds me of my childhood. I am still searching for the original recordings though!

ASIN: 1556709080 |
Book Description
The Virtuoso is an illustrated celebration of the human potential in all of us. Defined as the unthinkable ventured and the impossible attained, the virtuosos in this book are from different generations and cultures, but they share certain qualities: dignity, self-discipline, determination, courage, and focus. They are tangible evidence of the value of hard work, dedication, and passion; they inspire greatness.
This daring book pairs lively text profiles with stunning, intimate portraits. Some, like Mikhail Baryshnikov and Muhammad Ali are world famous, others are relatively obscure. But all are among the best on earth at what they do, whether it's tying flies, puzzling over evolution, baking bread, making a canoe, picking stocks, juggling, telling a story, or playing a guitar.
From an unbelievable 720-degree aerial rotation on a skateboard to a clandestine 1,350-foot-high wire walk between New York City's Twin Towers or a transporting piano solo, perfection exists in myriad forms, though rarely has it been captured so brilliantly as in this book.
Customer Reviews:
enthusiastic fun.......1999-04-27
What's great here, in addition to stellar photos and high production values (what kind of paper is this?) is the surprising quality of the selection of the people. I like seeing boxers and map makers, basketball players and glass blowers set next to each other.
To surpass oneself is among life's greatest rewards.......1999-04-18
Wayne Gretzky's retirement from hockey seems a fitting occasion to remark on the phenomenal collection of virtuosos Ken Carbone has gathered together in his new book. The gift of a Virtuoso like Gretzky, and of this book, is the realization that absolute focus and dedication to a passion can lead one beyond oneself. That message resounds like a gong through the handsomely designed pages and expressive photographs of The Virtuoso. The thrill of sharing a Virtuoso's talent is the transcendence it offers, the visceral feeling that one is witnessing, in the Eastern sense, life lived fully in the moment. Inspiration, indeed.
Buy this book for everyone you care about.......1999-04-17
Joseph Campbell's sadly over-used expression "Follow your bliss" is personified in the 40 profiles that fill the pages of The Virtuoso. What a revelation to find that the world possesses such remarkable individuals in places we might least expect to find them. The Virtuoso says much about taking risks, about going as far as you can to arrive at a place that is larger than yourself. Love, and a dash of madness, are at the core of every choice a Virtuoso makes, shaping the lives of these extraordinary talents in the most unimagined ways, and those who come into contact with them. It takes a vision to see the vision in others. Clearly this author has that. Bravo!
THE VIRTUOSO ROCKS!...KEN CARBONE IS THE KING OF THE WORLD!.......1999-04-16
This is one of those extraordinarily rare books that inspires me to buy not one, but 100...for family, friends, and colleagues. The idea is so simple and so brilliant but more important, it is beautifully executed. Truly inspired virtuoso selections, gorgeous photography and wonderful writing-- rarely, does one find all of these qualities in one body of work. My only regret is that the book wasn't available during the holiday season or I would have used it for ALL of my X-mas gifts. With tremendous respect, LCLJ

Not just the famous. Not the infamous. Not the obvious. This amazing book actually delivers on the promise of the title. I didn't realize how jaded I was until I sat down and moved through the text and images. Simply brilliant. Don't miss the experience and integrity of this book. ADDED BONUS: The book's superlative design and extraordinary photographs.

As befitting a royal and ancient game, golf's rules are complicated and often confusing. On the PGA Tour, players have tournament officials to help keep them on their toes. Those not fortunate enough to be on the Tour are left to the mercy of the official Rules of Golf--a fine book, but somewhat bogged down in legalese. To remedy this situation, veteran golf writer John Andrisani teamed up with PGA Tour tournament official Mark Russell to create Golf Rules Plain and Simple--a plain-spoken guide to dealing with 37 common rule violations. Some of the rules seem too strict for the weekend duffer (are you really going to penalize your opponent two strokes for asking you what club you used?), but committed golfers will want to abide by them anyway. After all, golf is a game of honor. With its compact size and durable covers, Golf Rules Plain and Simple is the perfect addition to any golf bag. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
<BLOCKQUOTE>
"The game's big lie is that the rules of golf are simple. The actual fact is that they are complex and confusing, which is why millions of earnest amateurs unwittingly violate them every time they play. PGA Tour official Mark Russell is one of golf's best at making complicated rules decisions clear and understandable to the best players in the world, and now he's presenting his common sense approach in plain drawings and plainer English. If you want to truly understand the rules and confidently play by them, read this book." <BR> -- Jaime Diaz, Sport Illustrated

The title says it all.......2002-01-10
Though the rules of golf are not as difficult as they are often said to be, they can nevertheless be arcane at times, but this book does a good job demystifying them. Knowing the rules can save you strokes, as you can sometimes use them to your advantage. In a format small enough to fit in a golf bag but with print big enough to read easily, common situations are presented, then common mistakes in this situation are shown, followed by the correct way to play. To help even further, one or more pictures accompany each of the 37 situations. All this, along with a modest price, combine to make this an excellent purchase for the golfer without the patience to read the official rulebook.

Pretty well done. Golf Rules Plain & Simple is a book that I hope only gets better with future editions.
With that in mind, I offer some suggestions that the author or other readers may want to comment on.
Some suggestions:
While there is a footnote that gives the author's opinion as to the more important rules, he doesn't use them to order his book. Rule #1 (for example) is about seeking advice on golf club selection - and of his five key rule situations - the first one drags in at Rule Number 18. Also, it would seem to be much more helpful to put yellow and red staked hazards on adjoining pages for the reader to compare and contrast.
After stating each rule situation, the author gives the most common mistake made (first) before giving the correct procedure. This is not helpful and potentially confusing. When telling someone how to do something - do you want to start with the wrong way or right way? Nothing wrong with pointing out the common errors - just put it at the end.
Some more could have been expected as to the top issues. For example, how to come to agreement with others as to where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. Things to say to an opponent could make this a lot less trying in match play, for example.
To the author, page 67 talks about a provisional ball played for a ball that you think is lost in a water hazard. Agreed. But the more common argument is when it is unclear. Where is your explaination in the book that if you don't see it land (and stay) in a water hazard - the ball is assumed to be lost? Another point that your book appears deaf on - what happens (for example) if you are playing a match and hit a ball towards the woods bordering the fairway. You don't have any indication that it is a hazard (it looks like normal woods from the tee) - you announce your intention to hit a provisional ball as you may have a lost ball. You and your opponent both agree as to where the ball seemed to drop down. You find your ball but those nice woods actually turns out to be a red stake marked lateral hazard. You have a shot to the green (without penalty) that you would like to try. Your opponent says no. He says, "you can't use the provisional ball rule when a ball lands in a hazard. Lack of knowledge of the hazard's existance offers no help. You need to play your second ball (i.e. no longer provisional)as it is the live ball" (in other words, no five options for a lateral hazard). Is he correct?
Finally, while you give the five options for a lateral hazard correctly, a note that "playing it as it lies" also means no grounding of the club (while covered elsewhere) would be a helpful reminder here.
Hope these suggestions help.
IF YOU GOLF-OWN THIS BOOK.......2000-10-13
Like most golfers I think I know the rules, but I don't. Who has the time to read the very confusing USGA rules book?
Mark Russell simply and clearly explains the basic rules of golf. O.B., lateral hazzard, lost ball-these are the rules that 95% of golfers DO NOT understand.
Thanks Mark!
Alan
Please Read This Book!.......2000-09-22
Sunny Delaney, please read this book. You see a little knowledge of the rules of golf is important in reviewing a book about the rules. Point: You would never penalize your "opponent" two strokes for asking for advise (the club you hit), because the penalty in match play (the only time you have an "opponent") is loss of hole - not two stokes. In stroke play the penalty is two stokes, but you do not play with or against "opponents", but instead "fellow competitors." Too picky? Not to a golfer, even a weekend golfer.
Must have for the golf bag!.......1999-09-26
Mark Russell has taken something that not many golfers know anything about, the rules, and made them simple to understand. In the common situations Russell uses, he shows you exactly where you can find it in the rule book. After reading Golf Rules Plain and Simple, I consider myself more knowledgeable of the rules. This book is a must for your golf bag.

Electron microscopy for biologists.......2007-05-14
This book is a very good technical introduction to the electron microscopy of biological samples. Good figures and schemes help to understand the text. Photos of different types of samples are also adequate to illustrate the methods. The book is an excellent manual for beginners and biologists find it useful and easy to read.
Excellent Book.......2006-04-06
This book is excellent for beginners and advanced microscopists. It offers fine details and tricks about techniques as well as the theory behind it. There are lots of pictures and schematics for each descriptions. It is also useful for microscopist that want to learn more about different methods. I definitively recommend it!
Excellent EM primer.......2001-06-26
I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.
If you are learning EM you must have this book..........2000-05-11
This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. It will be a book you will refer to for methodology and protocal from fixation to sectioning...I really love this book.
