A powerful, touching tale.......2002-12-31
Could things get any worse for Choon-yi, born with only one arm in a poor peasant family in China? She makes the best of the situation by creating and selling paintings. She is rightfully concerned when her beloved father accepts a perilous job building railroads in America. When she travels to see him, she endures heartbreak before discovering that her magical talent can help her father and many others.
The beautiful oil paintings have a gloomy dark brown tint that adds to the melancholy mood of the text. This winner of the 1997 Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Medal effectively uses the subdued pictures to compliment the text. I found this to be a powerful book, even though it is written and illustrated with a gentle touch.

Good pieces, weak whole........2007-03-22
While it is a fast young adult read, The Bone Collector's Son didn't quite come together for me. There is a lot in play: father-son distance, cultural traditions, courage, the power of belief, a mystery to be solved, obstacles overcome. The several Chinese ghost stories were quite charming. But when the various bits come together, they don't work together. The disjointed parts don't flow together: they distract from each other. So while the book has virtues, it just isn't that good a read.
A poignant tale.......2006-08-12
I have just read the story and I loved it. It inspires me to look at adversities in life with tenacity and to move on no matter how hard the going may be.

Product Description
NAFTA entered into force in 1994 after a bitter Congressional debate. But NAFTA in operation has proved no less controversial than NAFTA before ratification, for both supporters and opponents of trade liberalization have cited experience with the agreement to justify their positions. To provide a factual basis for this ongoing debate, the authors evaluate NAFTA’s performance over the first seven years, comparing actual experience with both the objectives of the agreement’s supporters and the charges of its critics. They then examine future challenges and opportunities in the trade and investment relationships among the three partner countries and the broader implications for new trade initiatives throughout the hemisphere.

Book Description
Eight original stories give readers a sense of the hardships faced by the first Chinese-Americans. In "Spirits of the Railway," a young man appeases the ghosts of dead railroad workers who were never properly buried. In "Forbidden Fruit," a father's prejudice keeps his daughter from marrying her beloved. Dramatic illustrations accompany the stories. "The brief, pithy tales strikingly reflect traditional Chinese beliefs and customs in New World circumstances. . . . A book not to miss."-- Booklist Starred Review

Book Description
This story begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in South China where Yenyee and her family live. One night, her fisherman father vanishes in a ferocious storm at sea. But it is not only her father that she suddenly loses that day. Yenyee feels betrayed by the ocean, a friend she has trusted all her life, and betrayed by her family who then send her across the Pacific Ocean to the New World to be a servant.
In this poignant story, two worlds-China and North America-come together. Inspired by the Wing Sang collection at the Vancouver Museum, author Paul Yee takes the reader on a magical voyage of love and forgiveness, of bravery and community.

Book Description
Maylin cooks delicious meals every day in her father's restaurant, but her lazy brothers take all the credit. One day a contest is held to honor the visiting governor of South China, and Maylin's brothers decide to pass off her cooking as their own. But when neither they nor the governor can replicate Maylin's wonderful dish, they all learn that there's more to the art of good cooking than the right ingredients. Paul Yee's charming text and Harvey Chan's dramatic watercolors transport the reader to another time and culture in this engaging tale.

Book Description
Ten original ghost stories by Paul Yee dramatize the history of Chinese immigration to North America, from poor villagers who first came searching for gold in the late 1850s to new arrivals from Hong Kong. Told in the style of traditional Chinese folktales, they are illustrated with moody, abstract drawings by Harvey Chan.
In the title story, two friends seek gold, but the precious metal brings riches to one man and a curse to the other. In "Seawall Sightings," young lovers kept apart by immigration laws have a tragic reunion. In "Reunited," a spoiled teenage boy leaves Hong Kong for North America, only to find that his new life is not the glamorous one he had been expecting.
The stories describe the struggles, dreams, and resilience of people making new lives for themselves in a strange land, while retaining strong links to China and the past. In keeping with authentic Chinese ghost stories, wherever they go, the immigrants are followed by the curse of a friend, the ghost of a faithful spouse, or the spirit of a dead parent.

Book Description
In the Chinese opera, men traditionally sing both male and female parts. Wei Lim's father, Ba, however, usually plays masculine characters and sings in a deep bass voice. But Wei's grandfather played female roles, and has secretly taught Wei to sing these difficult parts. When the New World's entertainments begin to cause a shrinking audience for the opera company, and Ba is forced to play female characters, which can help him learn to sing in such high tones? Color illustrations help bring Wei's tale, and this ancient art form, to life.
Customer Reviews:
Coming of age for a child and a way of life.......2005-01-31
Wei, the child in this story, is the son and grandson of Chinese opera singers. At the beginning of the story, he idolizes the way of life his father and friends lead. His father, however, is nervous about the future of the Chinese opera in the new world, and steers his son towards excellence at school. His grandfather, however, secretly teaches Wei how to sing. The crucial difference between Wei's father and grandfather is that the former always sings the male roles and the latter always the female.
After his grandfather leaves, Wei is forced to see the downside of his father's job and what the opera's fading popularity might mean to his father and his own future. At the end of the story, Wei is able to save the day (or at least the performance), but the reader is left uneasy about Wei's (and his community's) future.
Though the author does not belabor the issues, he does drop hints about immigration, prejudice and class differences. While these might be lost on a younger reader, they will provide food for thought (and hopefully discussion) for the slightly older reader.
