This is an interesting book. A good companion for PMP certification. I warmly recommend it

5 out of 5 stars PMP review.......2007-01-07

This book was a tremendous asset and an excellent supplement to the mediocre PMP prep course I took. I'd highly recommend it for that purpose. It's not really designed as a stand-alone course.

The exam prep questions are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Testing Materials.......2007-01-05

This book has a very good test bed of questions for the PMP. It has a large variety of test questions and covers each area with good test questions.

I would recommend this book as one of the better resources in preparing for the PMP test.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent prep guide.......2006-10-10

If you are planning on sitting for the PMP exam, this is the prep guide for you! I've reviewed four or five other books, and this one stands out. The format is easy to follow; the nine knowledge areas are set up in a manner that makes the information easy to follow; the "Notes" area next to the Sample Assessment Exam makes it easy for the student to record their areas of weakness, so you can go back over those areas; and the authors even took the time to explain how long each section of the exam allows, the number of questions in each area, and the passing score.

This is a must have for any individual wanting to study and sit for the PMP exam. It's a great resource, and lays out the information in a manner to provide the student the added advantage for "PMP Exam Success".

Book Description

Here is the classic--and true--story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress, a Southern Civil War heroine to rival Scarlett O'Hara. Vyry bears witness to the South's prewar opulence and its brutality, to its wartime ruin and the subsequent promise of Reconstruction. It is a story that Margaret Walker heard as a child from her grandmother, the real Vyry's daughter. The author spent thirty years researching the novel so that the world might know the intelligent, strong, and brave black woman called Vyry. The phenomenal acclaim this best-selling book has achieved from readers black and white, young and old, attests to her success.

5 out of 5 stars Add this one to the Literary Canon.......2006-12-06

This is a beautiful piece of literature taken from the history books. It takes you on a journey from slavery through reconstruction into the start of what would become Jim Crow. The characters are vivid and this could easily be the story of any number of African American families.

5 out of 5 stars Voices of the Old South.......2006-07-25

I was 13 years old when I read *Jubilee* for the first time. I found it in the library and spent a rainy Saturday devouring the story. After the last page was turned, I ran immediately to my grandmother (who was born in 1906, and therefore an expert in all things old) and asked her how any of this could possibly be true. I knew about slavery from history books, but slave masters having children with slaves! What followed was an eye-opening conversation about what our history REALLY was - and who the people of the south really were. I never forgot the experience, and I never forgot the book.

Now, I am 18 years older, and once again, on a rainy Saturday, I picked up a copy of *Jubillee* (this time from Square Books in Oxford) and read the whole book again. The story was still as powerful, and I understood so much more than I could back then. I understood the mastery of Walker's writing, the power of her story, and the incredible fairness and depth with which Walker crafted her novel. So many voices of the South speak to us . . .

The chief voice is of course Vyry's - it's her story. She is the voice of forgiveness, compassion, fairness, and spirituality that reaches to so many. She is also a voice that triumphs over the horrible suffering and injustice of the pre-Civil War South. She endures Emancipation and Reconstruction - not quite the panacea of those history books that led me astray so young - and ultimately triumphs over hate in all its forms. Her words concerning misunderstanding and reconciliation in the closing 4 chapters of the novel are some of the most powerful words in literature. She is a heroine among heroines - a beautiful example of what it means for humanity to triumph over prejudice and adversity. Alone, it would be a great tale, but the voices don't stop with Vyry alone . . .

Each of the characters speaks for a class of those who grew up in the South: the angry poor-whites (Grimes, the people who burn Vyry and Innis out of their home), the angry black men (Randall Ware, Jim to an extent), the privileged and cruel white upper class (Big Missy Salina), those among the white upper class who felt the injustice and yet were too cowardly to enact change (Marster Dutton and Miss Lillian), the freedom fighters that worked diligently to bring freedom (Brother Zeke), those who suffered before they saw the promised land (Mammy Sukey, Aunt Sally), and those who wanted to turn the labor that had been stolen for so long into proof of their worth (Innis Brown). Not only are all these voices present, but they are treated with equal sympathy and truth. Even the most evil of characters, like Grimes, is presented with compassion. Even the most heroic of characters, like Randall Ware, is portrayed with human frailties in tact. This is what makes *Jubilee* not just another slave novel, but a novel that really makes history alive.

I am a descendant of the poor white class. What *Jubilee* proved to me as a child was simple: I shared more with people of color than I thought. What it proves to me now is no less profound: Our history and our heritage are bound together by threads that we may not understand, and yet they are undeniable. Perhaps Vyry said it best: we all need each other. Only when we as a nation and a people realize that truth can true healing take place.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2006-03-26

This book was assigned reading for my daughters college literature class. She kept her copy, I read it and wanted a copy for myself. It is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Jubilee.......2005-09-02

A tremendous story of one woman's determination to survive. This is a no-glory novel, with deep emotions and awe inspiring human spirit. The dignity with which Vyry lives her life is as relevant today as the time period depicted. There is more than one lesson to learn in this classic novel.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2004-03-15

One word cannot describe this book. Margaret Walker captured the essence of one woman's struggle that represented so many during a period when freedom was an elusive dream. It would take a war and many deaths before African Americans became liberated, only to realize later that the chains of oppression were still evident just manifested in other ways. In JUBILEE, Vyry is born into slavery as a result of a relationship between her mother, Hetta, and the white plantation owner, "Marster Dutton." After Hetta's death, Vyry would be placed in the mansion as a servant to the owners and their children. Her mulatto coloring would elevate her above the station of a regular field hand and qualify her to work in the "Big House." While in the "Big House," Vyry would be subjected to almost daily abuse from the "Big Missy." Sometimes her only peace of mind would come from some of the older slave women who worked in the house. But when they all finally died, leaving her all alone, Vyry starts directing her own life and dreams, even daring to find love with a free black man.

Margaret Walker's JUBILEE is one of the best book written on witnessing the brutalities, triumphs and struggles of African Americans before, during and after the Civil War. In a true account from her ancestors, Walker has written a riveting tale of life as a slave. Her main character, the focal point of the book, is one that left this reader in tears from the hatred she received, but spellbound at the compassion she showed to her abusers. I was captivated by the love she showed for her husband and the stamina she possessed to keep the family and the dream alive. This novel is a fine testament to the life that our forefathers suffered in the pursuit of freedom and should be required reading for all African Americans.

    Book Description

Moral Repair examines the ethics and moral psychology of responses to wrongdoing. Explaining the emotional bonds and normative expectations that keep human beings responsive to moral standards and responsible to each other, Margaret Urban Walker uses realistic examples of both personal betrayal and political violence to analyze how moral bonds are damaged by serious wrongs and what must be done to repair the damage. Focusing on victims of wrong, their right to validation, and their sense of justice, Walker presents a unified and detailed philosophical account of hope, trust, resentment, forgiveness, and making amends - the emotions and practices that sustain moral relations. Moral Repair joins a multidisciplinary literature concerned with transitional and restorative justice, reparations, and restoring individual dignity and mutual trust in the wake of serious wrongs.

    Book Description

Fifteen original essays open up a novel area of inquiry: the distinctively ethical dimensions of women's experiences of and in aging. Contributors distinguished in the fields of feminist ethics and the ethics of aging explore assumptions, experiences, practices, and public policies that affect women's well-being and dignity in later life. The book brings to the study of women's aging a reflective dimension missing from the empirical work that has predominated to date. Ethical studies of aging have so far failed to emphasize gender. And feminist ethics has neglected older women, even when emphasizing other dimensions of difference. Finally work on aging in all fields has focused on the elderly, while this volume sees aging as an extended process of negotiating personal and social change.

4 out of 5 stars Age before beauty.......2000-09-06

Every now and then a book appears which responds to a real need, even if you didn't know the need existed. This book breaks new ground on the issue of aging and women. The studies on images of women and how it affects women aging are especially good. Not all is perfect. Many claims are made for the differences between male aging and female aging, but little proof is given. The religious issues which surround aging are strangely absent. Still, this is a first and a scholarly one.

5 out of 5 stars Leading with Constructivism.......2003-03-04

This book essentially examines the dynamics of a learning community within the theoretical framework of constructivism. While the book is dense in theory, itýs clear prose and liberal inclusion of examples and stories make it an accessible and meaningful read. The bookýs title may be misleading in that an educational leader, in the constructivist sense, is any educator who seeks school improvement through open, democratic processes. In this sense, the book would seem useful to any organizational development specialist who craves a broader theoretical understanding of the nature of OD, and insight into how groups of educators can build learning communities committed to improving the lives of their stakeholders. The book is complex in its scope and depth, but nonetheless answers a fairly simple question: How does constructivism help us see what humane and effective schools should look like? Lambert and her colleagues weave a fairly cohesive and inspiring narrative of social change within the educational context.

According to the writers, constructivism is a theory of learning derived from the fields of philosophy, psychology, and science. Constructivism in simplest terms posits that learning is the process of reforming what we know, believe and value based on the connections between new and already held knowledge, values and beliefs. In other words, people are in a constant state of learning in order to secure or enhance their existence. In the school context, Lambert defines ýConstructivist Leadershipý as ýthe reciprocal processes that enable participants in an educational community to construct meanings that lead toward a common purpose about schooling.ý (p.29) These reciprocal processes entail building trust through social and professional relationships, identifying and reconstructing commonly held assumptions and beliefs, building new shared knowledge, and altering individual and group behaviors to create new ways of doing school. In this way, Lambert and her colleagues argue, we begin to see leadership, community, and schools themselves not as roles or physical entities, but as social processes, which require constant tending and development. In a biological sense, individuals are in a constant state of constructing their understanding of the world. In an ecological sense, interdependent groups of individuals must co-construct their understandings in order to create a desired reality. In this way, Lambertýs constructivist view of learning and leadership is in close company with Sengeýs view of the learning organization, which strives to move from status quo to a shared ideal of something better.

Theoretically, constructivism owes much Lee Vygotskyýs work on the relationship between language and learning. Not surprisingly then, this bookýs core chapters all deal with the role of communication in constructivist leadership. In ýLeading the Conversationsý, Lambert argues that conversations ýare the visible manifestation of constructivist leadershipý (p.83). On page 86, she provides a useful ýTypology of Conversationsý model, which shows that four conversation types (dialogic, inquiring, sustaining, and partnering) contribute to, among other things, collaborative sense-making, remembrance and reflection, sharing and building ideas, and respectful listening. In ýThe Linguistics of Leadershipý, Diane Zimmerman deconstructs the processes of paraphrasing, inquiring, and articulating ideas, and argues that when used in balance they help groups uncover ýthe unspeakableý, make sense of assumptions and beliefs, and find new patterns and paths to improvement. In ýThe Role of Narrative and Dialogue in Constructivist Leadershipý, Joanne Cooper argues that ýstories provide a vision and a desired direction for adults working in schoolsýý (p.122) Narratives bring to life ýtacit knowledgeý and in so doing imbue groups with connectivity, and common purpose and vision. In these chapters, we see strong practical and theoretical themes that are consistent with the change work of Fullan, Sengeýs work on learning, and the organization work of Schmuck and others.

Constructivism, as an epistemological theory, has a long and broad history in this century. I found this book refreshing for making clear connections between a theory of knowledge and the practices and perspectives relevant to organization development and learning communities.

    3 out of 5 stars Ok but..........2002-11-23

This had many solid points and I like the fact that it has many example of the constructivist theory in use which makes this book more practical for some one who doesn't want to worry about getting to deep into the theory. The only problem with this book is that the theory that is presented is flawed. They completely down play the role of traditional education and present their theory as the opposite to traditional education. This goes against John Dewey's basic theory and makes the fallacy of selective emphasis. This is a great book if you want to practical experience from schools that this method has been used at but if you want theory, you are better off going to the source, John Dewey.

4 out of 5 stars The Constructivist Leader.......2000-07-14

Constructivism has a myriad of definitions, or so it seems in education today. In this book, the general principals of constructivist leadership are defined and "fleshed out" through the contributing authors. Excellent book for administrators that are trying to find theory based rationale for site based management in school. A book that should be kept on your office bookshelf because you will refer to it often. The listing and comparisons of past educational methods is nicely done and easy to reference.

With Adam at her side, Eden hopes that life on new Earth will be a lush garden of sensual pleasures. But Adam's not telling her everything, and his secret may end up destroying them both.
