            Book Description

Frances lives in a beach town on Lake Winnipeg - the center of Manitoba's Icelandic community - with her mother and grandmother. The family has lived there for generations, ever since Icelandic immigrants settled the area in the late 1800s. One day Frances finds an old journal. The entries are written in Icelandic, and the pages are torn, moldy, and blurred, many of them missing. Yet Frances can't bring herself to throw it away. At the local old folks' home, Frances finds a cranky, ailing man who agrees to help her read the journal. A friendship grows between them as the story of the journal unfolds. It is the story of Frances's great-great-grandparents - a tale of love, hardship, scandal, and a group of mysterious stowaways. Frances finds herself digging into her own past and uncovering more than one family secret. This novel brings out all of the author's strengths as eccentric but engaging characters come to terms with their differences. In the end, Frances learns to use the past to navigate a future that will take her full circle, back to the land of her ancestors.

5 out of 5 stars More excellent short stories by one of the best.......2002-08-02

In the tradition of GOD IS NOT A FISH INSPECTOR and BLOODFLOWERS, this is another excellent collection. I discovered Mr. Valgardson's work years ago while doing grad studies in Canada, and would have to directly contact his Canadian publisher so that I could get copies of his work delivered to me south of the border. While these are effective and captivating stories, as I am used to, they do seem to also represent a maturing of the author - some of the pieces are more personal, and have a different kind of passion, more focused and sage-ful. There was only one story that seemed a little tossed off, regarding a man of colour being mistaken for a threat by a police officer... IDENTITIES. Not a poor story, and admittedly very well-crafted, but IMHO not of the story-telling calibre of the rest. Plenty of other stories with memorable images, and telling insights. The author really takes a chance with his protagonists, not afraid to have them be less than 100% sympathetic. In particular, I thought WRINKLES and THE CAVE were powerful, leaving long-lasting impressions. And the author also ventures beyond the shores of Canada to Iceland, which is a very interesting development in his writing. I usually prefer to savor his stories only one or two at a time with some nice coffee, allowing me to stretch the collection out for over a week. If you haven't read any of Mr. Valgardson's short stories before, I'd recommend reading one of his earlier collections, as I think you'd then appreciate this collection more. Take a break from full-length novels, and try W.D. Valgardson's short stories.

                Book Description

Sam's parents ban him from using the Internet, forcing him to get out of the house and "surf" reality. Tracy's parents are old hippies, yet all she wants is to make enough money to have a nice apartment, leather furniture, and a little red car. Annie is stranded in her parents' remote cabin and must decide for herself whether to accept rescue from a handsome stranger on horseback. And Jeremy finds himself cleaning chickens in a country village. The kids in these stories draw on their considerable inner resources to survive and adapt in a confusing world. To each of these tales, W. D. Valgardson brings the wit, humor, and originality that characterize his fiction. The characters' triumphs are sometimes small (being there for a friend) and at other times big (discovering that it is better to be alive than dead, even if your parents aren't perfect), but instantly recognizable and engaging to today's young teens.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for Kids Who Feel a Little Different.......2000-04-18

The Divorced Kids Club features stories about kids who feel like they don't belong. The stories are similar to real life situations kids may encounter. As a future middle school English teacher, I would recommend this book for the bookcase or library. The stories do not sugar coat life as a teenager; but they do show that being different doesn't have to be negative. The stories show kids using their own resources both external and internal to survive what life throws at them. I think this book sends positive messages to kids about the jobs of growing up and being true to yourself.
