Book Description
Following their bestsellers Vulcan's Forge and Vulcan's Heart, Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz conclude their new trilogy chronicling the latter-day adventures of one of Star Trek's most beloved characters, shedding new light on his world's shocking history.
The distant past: The great ships have left war-torn Vulcan behind and, after a most arduous journey, have arrived at their destination. Two worlds become the new home of the exiles: Romulus is a verdant paradise, one much different from their desert home, while Remus is a barren wasteland, albeit one that is laden with natural resources. When Karatek and his family find themselves trapped on Remus with no hope of joining their brothers and sisters on Romulus, it sparks a conflict that leads the exiles into vicious civil war.
One year after the Dominion War: The Watraii are determined to destroy the Romulan Star Empire. Ambassador Spock is equally determined to learn their secret. With the aid of his wife Captain Saavik and the U.S.S. Alliance, his old comrades Scotty, Uhura, and Chekov, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise, Spock executes a daring plan to bring about peace before the Alpha Quadrant is once again plunged into war....
The stunning conclusion to the trilogy that changes everything you thought you knew about the Vulcans and the Romulans!

Did you guess what the end would be?.......2007-05-10
The first two books got me. Read them non-stop. Imagine the origins of not only Romulans but of Remans with a hint to the Watraii! But you can guess where this book goes immediately (I won't spoil it here) and not much else gets developed. Still worth it to complete the picture but not as good as #1 & 2. This three book series could have been done in two. Guess it was a money thing to get three books worth of cash out of us. It worked.

Book Description
Tensions remain high as the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire attempt to maintain their fragile post-Dominion War peace in the wake of the brutal attack by the mysterious Watraii, which ended with the loss of Admiral Pavel Chekov. When Admiral Uhura receives intelligence regarding a Watraii base that may contain more than one surprise, she sends Ambassador Spock, Captain Saavik, Ruanek, Captain Montgomery Scott, and Lieutenant Commander Data on a covert mission to learn its secrets....
But the truth of the Watraii has its basis millennia in the past. In the time of Surak, Vulcans were at a crossroads, on the cusp of either embracing logic or succumbing to their passions and thereby destroying themselves. With Surak's blessing, a group of Vulcans left their turbulent homeworld to find their destiny in the unknown reaches of space. But the stars prove even more unforgiving than the desert sands of Vulcan, as Karatek, the reluctant leader of the exiles, struggles to hold his people together.
Customer Reviews:
Vulcan's Soul Trilogy.......2007-05-13
Sherman is an excellent writer. It is too bad that she tried to fit the last movie into the ST Universe - we all know the movie was an abomination and the director should be taken out and shot - but she is actually successful at explaining all of the details. If only she had read the rest of the series before writing these books! While the trilogy is engrossing, and well worth reading, you will probably find yourself annoyed at the sharp differences between this work and all the rest of the histories and stories of Star Trek.
It might be best for the reader to believe that all of the action takes place in an alternate universe, that way the inaccuracies can be overlooked. She does have the political and social messages for which ST is famous, and she is dead on accurate with these.
While her characters and story are not as deeply insighful as Diane Duane's, they are certainly deeper and more detailed than most. Her works are highly recommended. Now, if only she would read the rest of the books in the ST series, she could inherit position of favored story-teller in the ST universe.
Exciting! Surpise after surprise!.......2007-05-10
Wow! Twists, turns, surprises and excitement! No plot spoilers, but I love origin stories and this is one of the best! A great followup to #1 but alas #3 can be guessed at and appears to be an attempt by the publisher to stretch a two book story into three for the sake of profits. That being said, this book is a must!
vulcan snoring.......2006-08-14
these writers have done so much better than this. granted this was a book that had to tie together two spots in vulcan/romulan history, but it was so dull, it was hard to keep reading until the end.
If you read the first , you'll read this.......2006-08-04
Chekov's rescue (of course you knew he isn't dead!) is too easy. The backstory of the long trek across space of the exiles is tedious. I did like the explanation that surfaces as to how some exiles end up on Remus instead of Romulus, but that's about the best thing in this story. Still, it is new Trek lore, and it's nice new stories continue to be written.
Incredible!.......2006-07-26
In the first book of their Vulcan's Soul trilogy, "Exodus" (Aug. 2004), Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz extrapolated from what little is known of Vulcan history to depict the Sundering. In their newest novel, "Vulcan's Soul, Book Two: Exiles", Sherman and Shwartz portray the long and perilous journey that the exiles undertook and the story is nothing short of remarkable.
Just as in "Exodus", the authors employ dual storylines in Exiles: one that illuminates the past and one the present. Almost two months have passed since Admiral Pavel Chekov was presumed dead in an encounter with the Watraii, the mysterious race who claim that the Romulans seized Romulus and Remus from them. When the head of Starfleet Security Admiral Uhura receives word that Chekov is still alive and is being held by the Watraii, who also have in their possession a rare artifact that could hold the truth about the Watraii claims, Uhura calls upon Spock, Saavik, Scotty, Data and Ruanek for a covert mission to recover Chekov and the artifact.
Meanwhile Karatek, reluctant leader of the exiles and the keeper of memories, provides the account of the long journey undertaken by those who fled Vulcan, some voluntarily, some not. Along the way many ships and lives are lost and the various factions who boarded the ships become more and more fragmented as time and hardship takes its toil on the survivors.
Although the Sundering of the Vulcans and Romulans has been touched on before in a few of the novels, "Exiles" will set what you previously might have imagined on its ear and leaves you anxious to find out where the story goes from here.

Extraordinarily good anthology.......2006-09-07
It is very rare that I am able to say that I enjoyed every story in an anthology, but that is the case for this volume. Many of the stories have a humorous quality, not so much laugh out loud as being pastiches of various mundane mystery and other genres.
There is a great diversity in the types of stories. The characterizations and story-telling are uniformly good to outstanding. The works tend to be set in somewhat feudal cultures, as fantasy usually is, but others are quite modern or otherwise set in familiar times and places (if you credit the existence of magic.)
Worth reading both for fantasy aficionados and mystery fans.
one of the best consistent compilations of the year.......2004-11-14
This superb twenty collection anthology runs the mystery gamut but has the common thread as stated by Rosemary Edghill in her introduction that "a crime (preferably by murder), and magic and the supernatural had to be somehow involved". Each tale does that and though the format is short story, readers will believe in the use of magic albeit whether to commit a crime, solve a crime, or both. The contributions run the gamut from historical to modern with varying sub-genres in each. Fans of fantasy who-done-it stories will want to read MURDER BY MAGIC as a virtual who's who of authors have contributed strong works in one of the best consistent compilations of the year.

If I was him I would be scared?.......2001-08-11
The book Bull Riding by author Josepha Sherman is about Bull Riding at a rodeo and it is the dangerous sport.
I think Alex Grant would be a bull rider.
If I was him I would be scared becuase Alex Grant might have been to Las, Vegas at The National Finals Rodeo but, not really.
Michael Sponigol would be an NFR qualifier and he's been there at The National Finals 4 times in Las, Vegas at that rodeo.
Just make believe!

Book Description
One year after the end of the Dominion War, the Romulan Star Empire comes under attack by a mysterious and alarmingly powerful enemy calling itself the Watraii, a species with a long-standing vendetta against the Romulans. Yet though they remain tenuously allied, the Federation, the Romulans, and the Klingons are unready to become embroiled in another sustained conflict, forcing Ambassador Spock, Admiral Uhura, Admiral Chekov, Captain Saavik, and some unexpected allies to defy their governments in order to meet the new threat head-on. But the first blood drawn may prove to be among the dearest of all.
Unknown to the defenders, the secret behind the Watraii's attack is buried in Vulcan's violent ancient past, during the time of Surak himself, when the proto-Romulans -- staunch opponents of Surak's reforms -- were compelled to take their chances among the cold and distant stars. Now Spock must begin the first leg of a long and dangerous road to learn the truth...before his hopes for the future become ashes.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book but not conistent with Star Trek History.......2006-04-19
It's a great read on it's own. My major nitpick is that the book is not consistant with the established history of the Star Trek Universe. Sarek is alive in the book while in Star Trek: The Next Generation he died in 2368 in the episode Unification of Bendii syndrome.
If you ar elooking for a great read, buy the book. If you are a stickler for internal consistancy with the series, you will be unhappy.
Wow.......2006-01-31
This was easily one of my favorite books. It jumped back & forth between the "past" (in the days of Surak, the father of Vulcan enlightenment).. telling the story of how the Romulans broke away from the Vulcans.. very interesting, if not a little confusing.. and the "present," where a race called the Waatari claim that the Romulans are murderers that kicked them out of planets that supposedly belonged to the Waatari (Romulus & Remus).. and plan on romulan genocide because of it. The federation is torn, because of an uneasy truce with the Romulans and not knowing exactly what happened when the Romulans found their now-homeworlds... the Romulans' history is sketchy and filled with myths, so that not even most Romulans know what happened in their early history. This first book tells the tale of one Vulcan man's journey.. meeting and befriending Surak and eventually being forced off-planet because of the civil wars. At the end of the book he ends up leading this "wagon-train" ship to the stars, full of Vulcan refugees, never to return home again. The "present-day" story involves a few of the original star trek cast: Ambassador Spock, Captain Saavik (Spock's wife now), Admiral Uhura, and Admiral Chekov. These lead a fleet of non-sanctioned Federation ships, a few Klingon, as well as some Vulcan ships all to the Neutral Zone to meet up with the Waatari (as well as the Romulans) to try to find out the truth, in hopefully the most peaceful way.
Good, But Won't Stand On Its Own.......2005-09-29
Kicking off a trilogy of novels, Vulcan's Soul: Exodus documents a new conflict in the post-Dominion War years between the Romulans and a mysterious species called the Watraii. At the same time, it delves into the past to tell about an exodus of Vulcans from the war-torn planet during the time of Surak.
On the whole, the novel was a pleasant diversion, but acted more as a teaser for the next two books telling two separate stories instead of really standing on its own. Right off the top, something felt odd. I couldn't really put my finger on it. It might have been expectations, but then again I can't say that I really had any. All I had known beforehand was that it involved some new race attacking the Romulans, so I was got increasingly confused by the amount of time was spent in Vulcan's past.
It got to the point that it started to overshadow the present day story and of the two, I preferred the more modern story. I started to figure that this Exodus either became the Watraii or the Romulans, although if it were the latter, it wasn't at all as I had imagined or thought had been established about how they left. Something tells me this was some previously unknown and earlier migration of Vulcans into space.
The most developed character ends up being Karatek, the Vulcan scientist in the past who takes in Surak as a guest and ends up getting way more than he bargained for. He hardens up during his ordeal going through the Forge and will only be tested with his new mission. No one else really gets as much attention, although Spock and Saavik are at the center of the 24th century storyline. Other characters from Sherman/Schwartz novels also appear and we get some nice updates about what they're doing. The use of Chekov is dubious. Of the original crew, he was certainly the youngest, but I also wish they'd just let the whole TOS bunch fade away instead of dragging them out and dusting them off for one more adventure. The needless jokes referencing "nuclear wessels" were just groan-inducing.
There are however several little details that do work well, especially the opening setting of a hidden meeting place deep in the Neutral Zone where the super-powers can get together. That is a place that I really hope gets used again in a future novel. The amassing of Saavik's fleet and its confrontation with the Watraii was decent. More about the other Federation starships would be nice. It did seem that several Starfleet vessels were willing to go against orders at the drop of a hat. Rebellion against orders is pretty run-of-the-mill anymore, so maybe it's just as well that they didn't go too indepth about it anyway.
Other things don't work so well. The plot relies on a couple of contrivances that just didn't feel necessary, such as a memorial service being interrupted by a broadcast of a Watraii attack that never really established who sent it or how. I was also a bit bewildered at how Saavik's fleet just happened upon the Watraii fleet in the middle of nowhere. I think a few more scenes, especially in the 24th century storyline, could have avoided those contrivances and only added more weight to the novel.
The book ends on a cliffhanger that didn't ring true. I really couldn't believe that Spock would proclaim someone dead on so little evidence. I really don't get much of a sense of how the Vulcan's Soul trilogy will all play out with Exodus. I hear that this trilogy will also get into the origins of the Remans, but at this point I'm not seeing it (or why it didn't play more into all the Romulan stories post-Nemesis). This is a light and entertaining first entry. Here's hoping the next installment gives us more depth.

At the ages of 7-9, I was a very sick little girl. After coming home from getting stuck by needles at the doctor's office, my mom bought me this book. I think I finished the book in just under 2 days. I just couldn't put it down! It has everything; adventure, romance, drama, magic, and of course... unicorns! What an escape for anyone with an active imagination! This was a dose of girl-power and courage I really needed. As an adult, there are still lessons I can use in my grown up life. In a way I STILL want to be Sheila! I was lucky enough to obtain all 6 books. I urge everyone to do the same... it's worth every penny!

These books are filled with adventure, mystery, magic, love, strength, and beauty. You can't help but be swept away by your imagination as you read these books. While reading about all that these characters endure, attempt, fail, and accomplish you can't help but share their adventures. This series is one that people of any age can enjoy.

Book Description
Following their bestsellers Vulcan's Forge and Vulcan's Heart, Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz embark on a new trilogy chronicling the latter-day adventures of one of Star Trek's most beloved characters, shedding new light on his world's shocking history.
<BR> One year after the end of the Dominion War, the Romulan Star Empire comes under attack by a mysterious and alarmingly powerful enemy calling itself the Watraii, a species with a long-standing vendetta against the Romulans. Customer Reviews:
Revising History.......2007-01-22
While the book can be quite enjoyable in its own right, the authors don't seem to be familiar with the much better series of books written by Diane Duane. Her history of the Sundering and the creation of the Romulan (Rihannsu) culture is better established in five previous books, and quite frankly makes better sense considering the way the Vulcan people turned out in the canon shows.
Books are never completely canon when the shows and movies can change details at any moment, but the books could at least be a part of the time line. Based on [...] information Chekov would be 132 and Uhura 138 years old in this trilogy. And I've never seen a hint of Saavik being married to Spock in the shows- that is sort of incestuous considering their early history. It seems a little too pat to have some of these details in the book and feels more like fannish wish fulfillment than good story-telling.
The writers should watch the show before writing.......2006-12-08
Major chronology/continuity issues with this one. Dissappointing, as I liked Shwartz & Sherman's other work.
1. Saavik had to wait 75 years to make Captain? Heck, if that were me, I would've resigned long before...
2. Uhura and Chekov are still alive?? Excuse me?
3. Authors treat the Dominion War as if it happened what, a year, after the movies, forgetting there is a 75 year period of time in between.
This novel just doesn't live up to the excellence of the authors' previous work. Star Trek authors should really watch all of the shows before attempting to write anything.
good idea / poor and clumsy style.......2006-02-14
The idea behind this book is quite interesting and could be catchy for many readers. With it's style of 'one chapter in present times, one chapter in the past etc.' it resembles a little "Spock's World", which is a really good book.
BUT...
The authors's style itself is rather clumsy and seems forced.
Some examples:
1) Admiral Chekov? Admiral Uhura?
Using those ST:Classic characters who might still be available, however old they may be, to nourish a story about Vulcans and Romulans is dull at best.
Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz are most likely satisfying their own sentimentalities in unnecessarily "reviving" these characters for their book...or is it just a desperate attempt to attract more ST:Classic fans?!
2) Vulcanoids have green blood - common knowledge among Star Trek fans.
Nonetheless we are being informed about this fact almost every other page. Something/one has always a blood-green tone, shines in the brightest blood-green, resembles the green of healthy blood, has a streak of green blood upon his face etc...
After about 50 pages it made me wanna scream: "YES, I GOT IT! PLEASE STOP, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!"
I highly doubt, that Vulcanoids are running around constantly judging the tone of everything green and reminding themselves, and thus also the reader, that THIS is the color of their blood, not red. Fascinating, that these Vulcanoids almost never see any other color worth mentioning in this book, just green.
Did Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz try to underline the exoticism/alienism of Vulcanoids this way? If so, it's a primitive and seriously unnerving attempt.
3) Vulcans are a very intelligent, precise species and know how to calculate without a computer. Nothing new!
Nonetheless Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz feel the need to remind the reader of this fact almost every other page (again!). Their Vulcans make comments about the PRECISE chances for whatever situation (however ridiculously uncalculable it may be) all the time.
Here just ONE example out of SO MANY: "Wouldn't it be wonderful, if the moment could last?" Saavik asked. "If we could all stay so amazingly unified. Of course," she added, "that is logically not possible." There was less than a .00035563 chance of such an intense feeling of unity lasting any longer...(Spock's thinking)
Where did he get all the necessary data to calculate such an amazingly precise number...for something as variable as humanoid behaviour? And why does he do it every other page, whether it's necessary/useful or not? Is it logical to constantly waste part of your concentration on something absolutely useless (and impossible)? Does that properly support the image of an intelligent and logical man/race?
4) Surprise, surprise - did you know, that Vulcans follow a philosophy that revolves around logic? If not, this book makes sure you will notice and never ever forget it!!!
Perhaps Vulcans (or just the authors?) don't have such good a memory and don't exactly know what logic actually is, cause it seems they have to remind themselves and others of the logic in this and that every now and then. If the situation, action, case has something to do with logic or not is rather irrelevant.
If you're just looking for a story and further background information about Vulcans and Romulans, this book will be quite interesting for you. Should you be the kind who likes good writing too, your money would be wasted.
PS: Please forgive my grammar and spelling, but english is not my mother tongue.
Splendid Star Trek Fiction on Vulcan's past and present.......2005-05-02
Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz have crafted one of the finest examples of "Star Trek" fiction that I've come across in "Star Trek Vulcan's Soul Book 1 Exodus", which is a thoroughly engaging look at Vulcan at the time of "The Sundering" coupled with the mysterious appearance of the Watraii, an alien race dedicated to the total destruction of the Romulan Star Empire's homeworlds of Romulus and Remus. I am surprised that Admiral Pavel Chekhov can be as spry as he is, given his advanced age, but nonetheless, I did welcome his appearance as well as Admiral Uhura's, in this well conceived story involving Star Trek: The Original Series characters set a year after the Dominion War. However, the most engaging characters are those from "The Sundering", most notably the engineer Karatek, who eventually becomes a disciple of Surak's, and flees Vulcan in one of the Exodus starships leaving a nuclear war-ravaged planet. The literary quality of the authors' prose is much better than what I have read from virtually most of the recent Star Trek fiction I've come across. I am looking forward to reading the sequel, which will be the second book in a trilogy devoted to Spock and Vulcan's history circa "The Sundering" and its repercussions for the United Federation of Planets, Klingon Empire and especially, Romulan Star Empire.
Illogical.......2005-01-14
Apart from the plot of the book, I'm curious as to how Uhura and Chekhov can still be active Starfleet officers at well over 140 years old. They're only human! Dr. McCoy showed up on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 2363 or so, and he was obviously not in any shape to be on active duty. I find it hard to believe that Uhura and Chekhov are in much better shape, being only a few years younger. Obviously, there would be medical advances in the almost 400 years between now and then, but if medicine has advanced so much that humans are living a couple hundred years, why was Dr. McCoy in such decrepit condition? In "Generations", Picard remarks that there are more days behind him than before him, and I've never heard anything indicating he is over 100. It's nice to have the old characters around, I know, but it just doesn't make sense. Of course, none of the books are "canon", so I suppose that allows for some leeway, but some sort of rationality would be nice.

Book Description
<BLOCKQUOTE>In a time of ancient gods,
warlords and kings,
a Land in turmoil
cried out for a hero.
She was XENA,
a mighty princess
forged in the heat of battle.</BLOCKQUOTE>
Xena: Warrior Princess. Gabrielle: Bard of Poteidaia. Theirs was a life of adventure. A life of romance. A life of great deeds and great battles against the forces of evil. A life of good and bad gods, of deep and lasting friendships.
In their travels, Gabrielle, Xena's bosom companion, learned much from the princess. When to keep your sword sharp and your wit sharper. When the size of Your staff <U>does</U> make a difference. In return, Gabrielle taught Xena the secrets of warmth, kindness, and joy.
Now, in her own recently discovered words, the Bard of Poteidaia talks of what she got from Xena and what Xena gave her, lessons about life that will ease the path for those of us battling on through the modern world.

If I was a bard, this would be my bible!.......2003-05-20
A great edition for any true Xena fan. Read through the list of things Gabrielle has learned from her friend Xena as well as the ins and outs of living life on the road, (or the dirt track as they would say) A great read, full of good laughs and informative too.
pretty good.......2001-09-27
This was a real cute book..a must for any "hardcore nutball" Xena fan. I like the pictures and Renee O'Connor's small top ten list in the front was a big bonus...It was not a real introduction, but good nonetheless. I wouldn't spend a huge amount of money on it..but good for the price here.
Gabrielle's scrolls.............2000-01-19
Hmmmm, this book is quite good - but I believe that there are better ones out there. If you're a complete xena freak like me then, then you'll want to have it - it is amusing, especially as it is from gabby's point of view, and sometimes the author manages to nail it and you can hear gabby's voice saying the words. It's not for someone who doesn't know the programme too well. It often makes brief references to episodes and I'm not really sure how much sense it would make if you hadn't seen them. It is quite a short book, but you'll not want to put it down until you've read it. Don't buy this if you're looking for something really informative about the show. This book is a bit of fun and nothing more - like I said before - something for the die-hard fans rather than anyone else....
Gabrielle's life line story in one book!.......1999-07-29
If you want to learn everything about Gabrielle's life this is the book for you! Her stories and journeys with Xena will thrill and take you beyond the pages of her book. Every chapter has something new, and you learn many things about the way she lives with Xena, and Joxer too. Pick this book to learn more then even Xena knows about Gabrielle's life.
This book will not let any Xena fan put it down!.......1999-07-23
This book is a creative way of putting any xena fan on the journeys. It comes from Gabrielle's perspective of lessons, discoveries, friendship, and many things well taught, that she's learned on the journeys. As a Xena fan I recommend it. Though it's fairly short, It will keep you turning the pages all night long! Complete with a Introduction by Renee 'O Connor, I find it a very believable book.

Customer Reviews:
Hmm...not the best but still very good........2007-04-04
I admit I had higher expectations when I started to read this book. I'd heard that it rocked and I was happy to know that Tamora Pierce and Josepha Sherman were the editors. Some of these stories are excellent and fun like THUNDERBOLT and SWORDS THAT TALK. No, no I liked more than two. Infact many others were great too. But some were just not good stories or not written to well. I do highly recomend this book to anybody that enjoys male and female hero's, fantasy, action and some romance. It was still very, very enjoyable.
Why only 4 stars???.......2007-01-26
Many of you Tamora Pierce fans or people that have already read this book or even if you haven't even heard of this book are wondering 'Why only 4 stars?' Many, many of these stories are wonderful and exciting. I enjoyed Heartless, Student of the Ostriges and especially Thunderbolt. But in some points to the book I found myself thinking of stupid reasons to stop reading and do something more...exciting. I'm not saying that this isn't a wonderful book because it is and the authors like Tamora Pierce and Esther Friesner were especially good. But the stories like 'The Gift of Rain Mountain' and 'The magestone' were unappealing. But by all means try this book because there are some wonderful stories in here!

A.K.A Book Worm
excellent.......2006-12-22
This collection of stories is filled with a wide variety of different ethnic groups, and includes both humor and seriousness. While some of the stories you truly warm to, and others you become bored with, the meaning of the word "warrior" is conveyed in such a way that by the last page you have your own definition.
Fans of Tamora Pierce, while not, prehaps, finding an all-time favorite, will be satisfied, and find several authors worth persuing as well. The ratio of hum-drum to spectacular stories is about 2 to 1, which is a good bet for buying compared to most short story collections.
Awesome!.......2006-01-11
These stories are very good in different ways. The thing the reader needs to keep in mind is that the stories aren't supposed to flow or fit together-that's the whole point of the book. So yes, if you try to read them in a row it will seem weird, since every story has a different feel to it. I loved some of the stories, particularly "Eli and the Dybbuk" and Pierce's "Student of Ostriches". I can't guarentee anyone liking it, but if you like that genre and keep an open mind you should like some of the stories, at least. I love it!
Entertaining, but lacking in certain aspects.......2005-12-04
This one is more of a 3 1/2 for me, but I rounded it up to 4 because I'm just too picky when it comes to the excitement of a story.
This book is basically a collection of stories about warriors in some way, shape, or form. Some stories stand out as thoroughly captivating in some way or another--i.e., the dark 'Heartless', the action-packed intrigue story 'Devil Wind', and the funny 'The Boy Who Cried "Dragon!"' Others were boring or with a not-so-great plot--i.e., 'Serpent's Rock' and 'Lioness'(<--this would have been good if it had been written by a different, or better, author). Fans of Tamora Pierce who leap at this book, prepare to be at least a bit disappointed; only one story is written by Her Fantasy Highness herself, and even that one 'Student of Ostriches' was surely not her best.
I enjoyed this book for the first couple stories, and then after a while I started realizing that this book was getting mediocre fast. I barely read the last two stories--whether that was a mistake, I don't know, but sincerely doubt. 'Young Warriors' is for fantasy lovers who have long zipped through Tamora's new book, 'The Will of the Empress', as well as all the other new fantasy reads, and are in desperate need of a good book of magic and strength. However, I would recommend getting this one at the library, depending on how high your endurance level is and how much you love fantasy.

Customer Reviews:
Beloved fantasy stories.......2007-01-13
I first read these books as a 7-year-old second grader. I still have the entire series lying around somewhere. Reading them as a child, I was absolutely enchanted. I re-read them as an adult, and they are still captivating.
These stories are absolutely excellent for young readers, particularly young girls, who want a great role model. Sheila is courageous, strong, and innovative; I love her creative mind. (Wait until you see how she fends off the first perceived enemies in the "other world"!)
Whether you're a parent looking for something to read to/with a child, or an adult fantasy lover, you will enjoy these tales. You can probably find the original six novels for sale used, too. (I was always hoping they would come out with more :)
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-10
I absolutely love these books. I only found the firt two at a clearence book store in the mall, and I truly fell in love with the books. Granted, they are more for young preteens than teenagers, but those of you who love a great fantasy story, this is a series for you. They should really put these books back into print, it would really be worth it if they would. So many people would love them, and I really hope publishers make them available again soon. I only have the first three, but have been going through pains to get the rest, seeing as how they are all so expensive these days. Keep looking though, it would really be worth your while if you could bye the books.
About Time!.......2006-06-04
It's about time that they got around to print Secret of the Unicorn queen again. I love these books. They are the perfect adventure fantasy books for young adults. A little romance, some fighting and good triumphs over evil like any good tale. While they were printed over 10 years ago, they have never gone out of fad. Now all we have to do is wait till the other books come out in print too.
An underrated series.......2005-09-30
I read the 'Secret of the Unicorn Queen' many years ago when they were first released, I adored them then and I'm glad to see that things that I loved then are still present now.
The series follows a young teenage girl name Sheila who has a pretty normal life, the only thing out of the ordinary is her relationship with Dr. Rite an eccentric scientist.
When a accident happens involving his affectionate cat and a untested invention Sheila finds herself in the world of Arren, where unicorns are real, magic exists. She meets a group of women determined to free the land from a tyrant. Sheila joins them and can't help but get caught up in the fight.
While the book doesn't break any barriers and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's still a solidly written story with likable characters, and engaging plot and even a few laughs.
Though intended for younger readers I think this series has appeal for older ones as well and not just as nostalgia.
Unicorn Lover.......2005-08-02
I started collecting unicorns when I was very young. My mother bought me the first 3 volume. I loved it. Then I found out there was a second 3 volume set I had to get it.
