Elves are jolly grand fun!.......2003-04-09
Mercedes Lackey handles elves like no one else. She's always fun and entertaining. The SERRAted edge books are some of my favorites (though the first one was slightly inferior). Wheels of Fire is anothe prime crazy-elves book--but it was unfinished. Though one of the character's lives is traced into Chrome Circle, which I actually read before this one, the rest seem to be dropped. I expect a sequel. It's always a sequel...but all the character build up led to a disappointing flop in the end. I wanted to see more from Cindy, more from Jamie, more from Bob, more from Al, more from Frank, more from Joe! The ending felt hurried, as if Misty was on a tight deadline and realized it a chapter away from the book's conclusion. The only character I was even partially satisfied with in the end was Sarah, a ghost.
So, I would say that this book is good, and definitely worth a read (or five), but not Lackey's best, and requires a sequel.
Not heavy fare, but worth a read.......2000-07-09
I found this book to be an entertaining example of its kind, and worth reading, especially if you are a Lackey fan. I did, however, find fault with some of the character developement. While the cases of Joe and especially Cindy are poignant, many of the other characters are less multi-faceted than one would expect. Good and evil are absolutes, with little room to explore the gray area of the different characters' consciences. However, these faults are far from dire, and I would not want to discourage a potential reader from enjoying this book for what it is; a side trip, as opposed to a journey, through an imaginary landscape.
Yuck!.......1999-05-26
I love all of the other Serrated Edge books, but this one is a definate flop. It featured a young boy being slowly starved and tortured to death by a Koreshian/NeoNazi cult. That made me sick. Most of the characters were very flat also. In short, a dull, depressing book.
What happens when elves meet a dangerous cult?.......1999-01-22
I just finished reading this only yesterday. I was pleased that it was so long, but I still thought it ended kind of abruptly, I know Joe's story continues in Chrome Circle, but I was still going "but, but, but, uh, uh....". I liked the characters (although Alinor got a bit annoying at the end) and the descriptions of the cult compound freaked me out. All in all, not perfect but awfully darn close!

Very tough to read but worth it.......2007-02-25
This volume contains 2 novels, both about horrifying child abuse. Most of Wheels of Fire takes place in the cesspool world of racist militants. I enjoyed the books although racing and Oklahoma are about as alien to me as Underhill.
Welcome to the world of Hot Rods and Magic!.......2001-12-06
Luckily, I had read the reviews before purchasing this title along with "When the Bough Breaks" and "Wheels of Fire." I like having two books in one! (I also own "The Chrome Borne") I've read many of M. Lackey's novels and these were most enjoyable especially because they were so DIFFERENT from the Valdemar series.
I especially like how M. Lackey and her co authors deal with modern day social grievances - in this case, severe child abuse and cult tendencies.
I used to teach emotionally disturbed adolescent females and I feel that more books like these are needed in order for society at large to understand what non-intervention does to exacerbate the problems. This is a wonderful tale of Elves, Magic, and human emotion. If only we could find the Seleighe court to help us with our society's problems! But since we can't, Lackey and her coauthors provide contact numbers and associations that can help stop the abuse in the back.
Not only a wonderful read, but also a great social commentary and it even gives you the tools to take some action!
For those of you who want to know what the books are about-.......2001-01-27
Yes, I know these books are a reprint. That's because I read the back and it says in not so tiny letters: Publisher's Note: Formerly published in parts as Wheels of Fire and When the Bough Breaks.
The books are some of the best I've ever read. When you can't put the books down, when they make you cry, when they make you feel sick, that means that you are reading some darn-fine material. Both of the books deal with the matter of child abuse and torture, a subject most people don't even think about on their own time. Mercedes Lackey deftly combines Urban Fantasy with a real social issue, something I admire greatly.
Wheels of Fire is the story of the kidnapping of a young boy, a medium, and his rescue. He has been kidnapped by a fanatical cult but with the help of the elf Alinor (a race car driver) and his human mechanic/mage friend Bob, they try to save the day. It's a pretty fast-paced book and the characters are absolutely amazing. It's not a book you can put down with ease. You HAVE to know: does Jamie get out? It's postively gripping.
As for When the Bough Breaks, this book is even tougher to read than Wheels. It's a story about child abuse and the results. It deals with several young girls and a gaelic witch trapped together in one body, multiple facets of her personality. It's up to Maclyn, an elf, and Amanda's schoolteacher Lianne to save her from destroying herself and the elfhame with her out of control magic and fury.
If you like urban fantasy, stories that deal with elves and whatnot in the present day, you'll like these books a lot. They are gripping and the characterization is astounding. If you like urban fantasy but can't stomach the sometimes horrifying child abuse, read her other reprint: The Chrome Born. Chrome stars the powerful human mage Tannim and a cast of elves, kids, and kitsune.
These are my favorites of Mercedes lackey's books, even surpassing her Valdemar series. They are excellent
Enjoy!
Other World.......2000-06-02
This book has not changed since the first time I read it under it's previous titles. Everytime I buy a book and discover it is a reprint with a new title I become very angry. The story(s) are excellent and something everyone should be very aware of. As usual Mercedes Lackey does a marvelous job. I only wish her publishers were more ethical in their business practices.
Get a grip!.......2000-03-21
Like I said for "Chrome Borne," I for one am glad of the reprints, since a few of the original titles were taken out of print before I could buy them. If you ask me, two stories for the price of one is not something to complain about!

Book Description
Here is the story of Tom, Huck, Becky, and Aunt Polly; a tale of adventures, pranks, playing hookey, and summertime fun. Written by the author sometimes called "the Lincoln of literature," The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was surprisingly neither a critical nor a financial success when it was first published in 1876. It was Mark Twain's first novel. However, since then Tom Sawyer has become his most popular work, enjoying dramatic, film, and even Broadway musical interpretations.

Today's Tom Sawyer..........2007-04-27
This is my favorite book.
It reminds me of being younger and experiencing the world in an innocent and carefree way. I think this is the ultimate "boy story." I gave this book to my girlfriend and she said it was too boyish for her...so there ya have it.
I read a version of it when I was younger, maybe Tom's age, and I did everything I could to live like Tom and Huck. Awesome story with great writing...good prelude to Huck Finn's more morally driven story. But thats what I like about this book, there aren't very many obvious morals. It seems to be just an adventure/murder story for the sake of a good book. Awesome.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.......2007-04-24
Have you ever been bored out of your mind and just wished someone would come and make life exciting? Well that is what Tom Sawyer does to one little town in the realistic fiction novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom just can't stand not being on an adventure, so he always finds a way to start one.
Tom lives in the boring old town of St. Petersburg, where he'll do anything to have a little fun. From fighting the new kid to running away with his pal, Huck Finn, Tom always brings some excitement to his life. Now, with a new girl in town and mysterious business going on, Tom and Huck find that there are more adventures than ever, some even fraught with danger.
One truly gets caught in this amazing tale of adventures. It is a great book for kids and even adults who like fun adventures and the classics. They'll be right there with Tom, enjoying every bit of it.
Chapter1 continued.......2006-11-27
"You really can work when you put your mind to it."
She was so pleased with Tom's work that she presented him with a big juicy apple and told him he could go out, but to be home in time for dinner. Tom smiled, and when she turned her back, he slipped a sugar-coated doughnut into his left pocket.
Whithin minutes, Tom was out on the street free as a bird. As he passed the house where Jeff Thatcher lived, he saw a girl in the garden-a new girl he had never seen before. She was lovely. Her blonde hair fell in two long braids almost to her waist. Tom fell in love instantly!
He tried to attract her attention by standing on his head and showing off in all sort of silly ways, but she ignored him. Tom vowed that before the week was up he would win her love. He skipped down the street, his head full of romantic plans and adventures.
The Ultimate Troublemaker (ADULTS WATCH OUT!): Tom Sawyer.......2006-11-15
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the story of a mischievous boy of the 1800's who goes through many adventures and represents the spirit of a true boy. Tom Sawyer is the classic troublemaker. He tricks other kids into doing his chores and plays hooky with his friends. At home, he steals sugar, he plays tricks on his Aunt Polly, and he even feeds Painkiller to the cat, making it livelier than usual.
Tom Sawyer has many mischievous acts, but one of his most famous is when he tricks other kids into whitewashing his fence. Tom hates whitewashing the front fence so when a boy walks by, bragging that he has no work to do, Tom says, "What do you call work?" and pretends he likes whitewashing the fence. Eventually, the boy wants to whitewash the fence so badly that he even pays Tom in fishing hooks, marbles, etc. to do it. Soon, almost every boy in town comes to pay Tom so that they can whitewash the fence. After a while, the fence has three coats of whitewash, there is no more whitewash left, and Tom is literally rolling in his riches.
Tom also has a time of puppy love and he follows Amy, a girl from school, around. But Tom's obsession with Amy soon stops and awhile later, Tom meets Becky, another girl at school, and falls in love again. Tom and Becky go through fights, but they make up each time. They even get lost in a cave together.
There's a time in every boy's life when they get mad at everybody in the world and they wonder how it would be if they were dead. Then everybody would weep and cry and compliment them. Although most people don't actually go ahead and pretend that they're dead, Tom goes ahead and runs away with Sid and Huckleberry Finn, son of the town's drunk who lives by his own rules. They pretend to be pirates and roam around on a nearby island. The town thinks they're dead and they grieve over the "lost" lives. From all of this hubbub, Tom gets a great idea. Tom, Sid, and Huck come back to town on the day of their funeral and shock everybody at the funeral.
Tom and Huck also have another adventure. They start looking for treasure, but they get tied up in the scheme of two men who have an actual treasure. Tom and Huck go looking for it and after plenty of hard work, the two get the treasure; thousands of dollars in gold and silver. Huck is then taken in by a widow in town with a share of the fortune and Tom has a share of the treasure, too.
Many people might think that Tom Sawyer is just an boring, old character, but they don't know the half of it. Mark Twain truly captures the spirit of a true boy. But not any old goody-goody boy. Tom is the ultimate troublemaker. This book will make you laugh. Tom Sawyer will forever be revered as the classic troublemaker and a legend.
America's first great work of children's literature.......2006-10-25
Outside of slavery and the plantation economy, no other images of the South so predominates American culture as those from this book; sundays sitting in a hot church in over-starched clothes, lazy weekdays fishing at the local pond, the town drunk rambling thru the streets, one-room schoolhouses, and extended families who share gossip and responsibilities. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is probably one of America's greatest books, and is probably the first work of Twain's that many Americans encounter at school. Coming in at under 300 pages, this book focuses on the live of one Tom Sawyer, as he navigates school, family, romance, church and the other important issues of a boy's life. Rife with comedy and commentary on life, this story also foreshadows other books by Twain's. Tom's adventures with Huck alludes to the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The troubles Tom gets in is a good lead-in to the Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The comedic social commentary about life and society foreshadows The Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Most impressive about this book to me is the recreation of the language and dialogue. All in all, this is one of the best books out there.

There be gods here!.......2003-09-05
Mark Shepherd offers what appears to be the conclusion of his urban-fantasy trilogy (read "Elvendude" and "Spiritride" first) and ties up his loose ends with a bang--or several. Set in Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge Universe, the book has, as usual, several subplots skilfully woven together and even a wild left turn or two. In Tulsa, OK, FBI agent Samantha McDaris--who is actually an elf in disguise, and the sister of Avalon's King Aedhan--is investigating the disappearances of over 200 young players from a nationwide chain of indoor wargaming arenas called Lazerwarz, of which a new facility is slated to open momentarily. When she arrives, she discovers that part of Stonehenge--yes, *that* Stonehenge--has inexplicably (to most people--Sammi immediately realizes that a magical Gate has been used, but whose and why?) has appeared in the facility's parking lot. Meanwhile, a teenage fast-food worker named Dobie discovers in the arena a warrior personality he'd never suspected--and gets picked up and seduced by what turns out to be The Morrigan, an ancient Irish goddess. But she's not the only Celtic survivor from The Upperworld still hanging on, as Lugh, the god of light, contacts Sammi and her brother with the news that his demimortal son, Cuchulain, has been reincarnated in modern guise and has no idea of his past. A British druid (probably likewise a reincarnation) and our old friend Mort, the demonic hanger-on from the previous books promoted to major villainy and with his true nature revealed, add further complications. Shepherd somehow manages to keep everything straight and maintain momentum right through an updated techie single combat intended to settle, once and for all, the quarrel between Mort and the Seileighe (Light Elf) court. He also originates a splendid laserized version of paintball and describes it so well that you find yourself wondering when it's going to open near you. This is urban fantasy at its best.
Great ! - More urban elves in the Mercedes Lackey Universe.......1999-09-14
Urban Elf magic fantasy. Laser tag meets magic and Dream Park. Some evil characters who weren't eliminated in Spirit Ride (also recommended) turn up as the elves of Avalon look for allies against the Unseleighe.

Amazing book, full of brilliant diagrams and visual demonstrations, includes practical applications........2007-01-29
Despite having been released in 1987, this book relays the fundamentals far better than those of any modern "for dummies" or "complete idiot's" series. The book is packed with carefully-done charts and illustrations. Glancing at the back credits will allow one to see that the co-authors must have consulted at least 100 different institutions to gather the illustrations present in this book.
Although it is considered to as an encyclopedia, the topics are actually organized in the form of a physics text so that one may read it cover to cover, and learn a great deal in the process.
This book revealed some amazing information that I had never learned in science classes:
(E.G.'s) Mass and energy are actually interconvertible, police radar guns work by firing microwaves (not radio waves) at moving cars and measuring how long it takes for the waves to return, the equations for force exerted by gravitational field, electrical field and magnetic field are nearly the same, every single object gives off radiation at all times, the "sea of electrons" within metals is responsible not only for their exceptional electrical conductivity but also for their great heat conductivity, Ultra wave sounds may be used to weld metal without melting it, etc.!!!!
plus at the price, you can't go wrong even if you find you disagree with my excellent review. I am going to get the chemistry volume from this series as well.

Not up to par.......2006-07-26
Taken on its own, this might be a decent "young adult" novel, but as an offshoot of Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge and Bedlam's Bard books, this and the sequel are not even close to where they should be. Considering the author collaborated with Misty on some of the earlier books, he really should have done his research when writing these. Things that are simple facts in Lackey's world are not even present here. For example, humans are NOT cross-fertile with elves without drastic measures. This is a point of tension in some of her later books, in fact. Also, elves do NOT have children easily, which is why they get involved in child abuse cases in Lackey's books! In Spiritride, the sequel to Elvendude, Shepherd has elves cross-breeding into an ancient Indian tribe, and states a bit later that elves could control when they conceived. Obviously, both of these elements are direct contradictions of Lackey's stories. And those are only two of the most flagrant errors; I won't belabor the facts any more.
Quite simply, if the author can't get his story straight, don't have a note on the cover of the books saying "Straight from Mercedes Lackey's world to ours!" If you like her books, don't bother with this cheap imitation.
Thinly Veiled Cautionary tale...........2004-04-24
I was impressed with Mark Shepherd's writing but had difficulty relating to the characters in the book. (Being well-past my teen years, and never been particularly tempted by drugs or peer pressure).
Part of me was more interested in the elves such as Marbann and Samantha than in the teen angst of Prince Adam and his friends. LOL. still if you are a teen in need of guidance you might enjoy this book.
Peeves? Like most of the books in this series it deals with drug abuse, alcoholism, and how to seek treatment. While youngsters might appreciate the message, oldsters or might find the 'message' a little heavy handed.
A new twist on a popular series.......1999-02-21
Mark Shepherd's Elvendude introduces the Lackey/Shepherd readership to a new, exciting family of elves. A spin-off from the SERRAted Edge series, we meet the "elvendude," Adam McDaris, a teenaged kid in Dallas who doesn't know he's an elf. Good take on the trauma of adolescence, and of drug addiction, which he deals with here with sensitivity and (maybe?) from experience. Despite the dark aspects of the subject matter, Shepherd brings humor and life to the story, and handles the characterization and plotting like a champ. I believe this is his first solo book, but it reads like the fruits of an experienced, seasoned novelist. I look forward to more from him; he shows tremendous potential.
Hilarious!.......1998-07-29
The book in and of itself isn't as good as the general Serrated Edge series, IMO, but I have to admit, the ideas presented inside ... some of them are too funny. If you're a fan of the series, you should definitely read it -- and if not, it's a good bit of humor!

Elves, Shamans, Satanists, Bikers, and Wingless Angels..........2003-08-08
If that sounds complicated, it's supposed to be. There's little future in trying to offer a synopsis of this urban (well, sort of) fantasy romp, which takes place in the same world invented by Mercedes Lackey for her SERRAted Edge Series, and is a direct sequel to Shepherd's "Elvendude" (it helps if you've read that first). The battle between Seleighe (Light Elf) King Aedhan's clan and its Unseleighe (Dark Elf) rival led by Japhet Dhu spills over into the human world, where it sweeps up 15-year-old Lucas Trask, a confused teen wavering between suicide and Satanism, and Wolf, a Native American Gulf War vet who is the last member of his tribe and the grandson of a shaman. Wolf's presence, in turn, involves Thorn Wilson, a Rider Guardian--a sort of angel who's been dead since 1922 and serves the Lord of the Land of Shadows as the helper of motorbikers everywhere. From Faerie to the Real World to the half-formed limbo that lies between all realities, the characters pursue each other through the interdimensional Gates, with abductions, human sacrifice, and assorted deceptions along the way. Though fast-moving, I found the story easy to follow, and there's action enough to suit any gaming enthusiast. I especially liked Thorn and would love to see him make a reappearance somewhere; he doesn't seem to have a lot to do here.
I have yet to be disapponted by any book written by Lackey or any of her co-worlders, and this novel maintains the qualitu of its predecessors.
The good gets better with this book.......1999-02-27
I have noticed a spate of "Native American" themes in fiction in the last five years, so it was with suspicion that I undertook Shepherd's Spiritride. Fortunatlely, he creates his own indian tribe with an interesting twist: It has Elven blood! (Maybe that's why it bears slight resblence to existing Indian tribes. It's fiction!) Forest Tribes may have started in the East, but how many still live there? We have Andy Jackson to thank for that. (see other review) Anyway, the plot quickly becomes complicated, with all the gating here and there. I couldn't figure out what was happening next. . . which is sort of the point, In my Humble Opinion. (The reference to Rocky Horror wasn't lost on me, either) The slow, insidious way in which Lucas is sucked into the Satanic cult was creepy, bringing to mind the Rad Right Fundamentalists in Wheels of Fire (which, in some ways, predicted the Waco cult/fire) and their methods for indoctrination. It appears to be well researched, making you stop an wonder about the Real cults that are out there. A big plus in my book, particularly when Shepherd refrains from being overly preachy on the matter. The evil speaks for itself. Mort is the villian you love to hate, and he returns in this story (And, ahem, is not. . .well, I won't spoil it) . I just wish there was more background on where he came from. I'd like to know where this little **** hails from. I loved this book, and could easily have read it if it were a third longer, even. I hope there is more on the way.
The elves are BACK!.......1998-07-15
Okay, okay...yeah, I didn't like this as much as the first novel. Who could? The plot was every bit as good, don't get me wrong...but I sometimes hated the way that things were done. Yes, it's a great read. It's fast-paced, and if you don't get TOO annoyed with the dark elves, then it's pretty good. I just wish that they would get a new villian. In other words, YES, I AM ANNOYED BY THE DARK ELVES!!! Anybody wonder what ever happened to Mort?
Handles landscape better than characters.......1997-09-16
SPIRITRIDE is one of the "Elves on the Road" series Mercedes Lackey began. The plot is classic Good Guys vs. Bad Guys; the part set in Elfhame Avalon is a sword & sorcery Western, which is actually quite fitting, considering the setting.
SPIRITRIDE takes place in Albuquerque and the flat country south of the city around the road to Mountainair. Shepherd's best comment in the entire book is that the energy in these parts is scattered all over the landscape, as much in the air as in the earth. I live there. He's right. It is. He's caught the flat dry flavor of the country, the scratchy scrub vegetation, the heat and the dust, perfectly. Pity he didn't do the same for his people.
SPIRITRIDE's best character is the ghost of the motorcycle racer from the 20s, now watching over all bikers. His next best is Wolf, part-Indian veteran of Desert Shield, coping with Gulf War Syndrome and a grandfather who insists on teaching him tribal legends before it is too late. Unfortunately, those legends and the tribal history bear no resemblance to any Southwestern cultures I ever heard of - and given their history as a forest culture, what's the old man doing living in a trailer in the middle of New Mexico? And if they are descended from a lost explorer from the Viking period, why does the first expedition's wisewoman bear the remarkably modern name of "Margot Jameson"? Why do the details of her faith and practice bear more resemblance to a book written in 1952 than to any of the rather well documented practices of the 10th Century? Time travel?
But the most disappointing part of the book is his handling of the sixteen-year-old boy caught in the war between the bad elves and the good elves. The boy has seen his best friend commit suicide. He has tried it himself, and been hospitalized. He has a stepfather who refuses to discuss any of this, but instead greets the most appalling events with cheerful denial. (Why?) The boy gets involved with a pack of melodramatically drawn Satanist/druggies, then as far as his family is concerned, vanishes for however long the events of the book take. And there the author leaves him, personal problems totally unsolved and a whole new set waiting for him when he returns home - if he does. Shepherd never says. But he's sixteen. If he doesn't go home, he has even more problems ahead. Is Shepherd planning a sequel? If not, he's dropped the ball and dropped it badly.
And, excuse me, "Avalon" as our local Elfhame? That's outlandish!
Read it for the local flavor.
